Please take a minute and introduce yourself! And don't forget to use the #gcisdchat in your tweets!
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:34 PM EDT
CAVEAT: Today’s chat centers around how Ss use MIs to demonstrate what they have learned, not the LS they use to process new info #gcisdchat
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Sarah Thompson, teacher at CHHS 🐾❤️ #gcisdchat
  • JackLeonardEdu Nov 2 @ 9:34 PM EDT
    Hi! I’m Jack 😊 #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Hi Jack and Sarah! :) #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Q1: Which MIs do you gravitate towards and give an example of how you have demonstrated your learning through them? #gcisdchat
  • RichRichCHHS Nov 2 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Holaaaa 👋🏽 Melissa Richards teacher at CHHS! #gcisdchat
  • amyleitner06 Nov 2 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Hi, Amy Leitner, Ins. Tech Coach #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A1 I trend towards logical and visual. I struggle w new content until I can 'draw' it out, find the pattern between the parts #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:39 PM EDT
I show my learning best through verbal/linguistic and interpersonal intelligences #gcisdchat
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Visual & interpersonal --I need to see it, draw it out, and talk or connect about it to best understand or grasp ideas #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 2 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Hi #gcisdchat friends! Bridget Visser, 7th grade ELA teacher at CMS jumping in.
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Def get the having to talk about it. MEEE too. #gcisdchat
    In reply to @ThompsonPanther
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:40 PM EDT
Q2: To what extent are our own intelligences guiding our lessons and planning? #gcisdchat
  • JackLeonardEdu Nov 2 @ 9:40 PM EDT
A1: def NOT bodily/kinesthetic 🙈I lean towards verbal/linguistic. Have 2 talk things out & say things out loud. Love words. #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:40 PM EDT
Being aware of the 8 MIs allows us to give our Ss opportunities to convey their learning in more organic and unique ways. #gcisdchat
  • RichRichCHHS Nov 2 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A1: Without a doubt I gravitate towards bodily kinesthetic. I learn best when I can interact and engage with the content. #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:41 PM EDT
While LSs focus more on the WAY a S learns best, MIs address the most natural way a S SHOWS that learning. Process vs Product #gcisdchat
    • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:34 PM EDT
CAVEAT: Today’s chat centers around how Ss use MIs to demonstrate what they have learned, not the LS they use to process new info #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 2 @ 9:42 PM EDT
A2: My initial tendency is to plan like I learn, bodily/kinesthetic/visual/musical! I have to remember outside MY comfort zone. #gcisdchat
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 9:42 PM EDT
I think that's why choice is so important! It allows for those Teacher bias to be dispelled. S's can choose based on strengths #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:42 PM EDT
As a teacher, I sometimes assumed the way I show learning best was the same for my students. So not true. #gcisdchat
    In reply to @CHHSLiaison
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:43 PM EDT
YES! I think differentiation and choice are essential in honing in on Ss MIs. #gcisdchat
    In reply to @ThompsonPanther
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:44 PM EDT
Q3: How could providing Ss the opportunity 2 demonstrate learning in their MIs increase their creativity & even self esteem? #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 2 @ 9:44 PM EDT
YES! This is precisely why I incorporate so much student voice. I ask each class period their input to give choice & meet needs. #gcisdchat
    • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:43 PM EDT
It is so hard isn't it??? You have to be intentional not to fall into patterns!
      In reply to @CMSVisser
  • JackLeonardEdu Nov 2 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A2: we def have a bias towards our own MIs. Gotta make sure we are keeping those biases in check! #gcisdchat
  • LeslieSingles Nov 2 @ 9:45 PM EDT
A2: Our own LSs and MIs definitely affect, but asking for student feedback can really help gear lessons. #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:46 PM EDT
When Ss convey their learning through a chosen MI they can demonstrate a skill classmates and T weren't aware of! Very cool!#gcisdchat
    In reply to @CHHSLiaison
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
I think it validates their MI & showcases the many, unique talents students have. Validation is important! #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Having Ss help design their own learning and how they can best show that learning is on point! #gcisdchat
    In reply to @LeslieSingles
  • JessicaRamos810 Nov 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Hi! My name is Jessica Ramos and I am the Associate Principal at CHHS. I'm so excited for my first twitter chat! #gcisdchat #CHpantherpride
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Do we have underperforming Ss who would perform better if we DID allow them to express their learning in their own unique ways? #gcisdchat
  • LeslieSingles Nov 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A3: Showing that we value them as a unique person helps build strong relationships and trust. #gcisdchat
  • TheMrsMagana Nov 2 @ 9:48 PM EDT
Hi! Mia here from GMS! #gcisdchat
  • jhylemon Nov 2 @ 9:48 PM EDT
A3: Self-esteem: Gives every student opportunity to "be smart"... not just some. #gcisdchat
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
Kids are MORE than just a TEST #gcisdchat
    • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Do we have underperforming Ss who would perform better if we DID allow them to express their learning in their own unique ways? #gcisdchat
  • amyleitner06 Nov 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A1: I tend to be verbal-linguistic and like to put my thoughts into writing to truly process the information. #gcisdchat
  • RichRichCHHS Nov 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A2: I am high energy and translate that into my lessons. Each class is diff. I survey Ss to find out their learning preferences! #gcisdchat
  • osunewell Nov 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A3 Starting from a place of strength is the best way to both grow strengths and weaknesses! #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
  • jhylemon Nov 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A3: Creativity: e.g. Forced analogies require students to think of concepts in ways that don't come naturally. #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Q4: These types of assessments are obviously not always appropriate, so when do we know that they are and when they are not? #gcisdchat
  • osunewell Nov 2 @ 9:50 PM EDT
A2 This is so imp to know and be aware of. If we’re not, we blatantly miss the opportunity to reach many of our Ss. #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:51 PM EDT
    Most DEF! #gcisdchat
    In reply to @osunewell
  • CMSVisser Nov 2 @ 9:51 PM EDT
I often think this as well. The perfect balance is found by giving choice, but also modeling methods bc Ss may not always know. #gcisdchat
    • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:47 PM EDT
Do we have underperforming Ss who would perform better if we DID allow them to express their learning in their own unique ways? #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:51 PM EDT
How do you Ts know when student choice with MIs is okay and when it may not be? #gcisdchat
    In reply to @CHHSLiaison
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 9:52 PM EDT
I like to pair creative formative assessments w/ a traditional summative or traditional formatives with a creative summative #gcisdchat
    • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Q4: These types of assessments are obviously not always appropriate, so when do we know that they are and when they are not? #gcisdchat
  • LeslieSingles Nov 2 @ 9:52 PM EDT
A4: Timeliness is important to our Ss. They care that the other student didn't have more time to prepare, not that test was same #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:54 PM EDT
Have you experienced Ss being 'not okay' with different turning in different products for the same 'grade'? #gcisdchat
    In reply to @LeslieSingles
  • CMSVisser Nov 2 @ 9:54 PM EDT
This is why I am SUPER excited about CMS using StrengthsFinder data from our kids to really take it to the next level! #gcisdchat
    • osunewell Nov 2 @ 9:49 PM EDT
A3 Starting from a place of strength is the best way to both grow strengths and weaknesses! #gcisdchat
  • amyleitner06 Nov 2 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A1: I tend to be verbal-linguistic, it helps me to write things down to truly process and learn. #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:57 PM EDT
Q5: Should student choice through MIs be ‘reserved’ for summative assessments only, why or why not? #gcisdchat
  • RichRichCHHS Nov 2 @ 9:58 PM EDT
A3: If we provide opp for Ss to mix their passions & learning, they learn to become innovative. A skill that colleges/jobs seek. #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 9:58 PM EDT
Having our Ss write things down can also engage their tactile senses and deepen comprehension and retention. #gcisdchat
  • jhylemon Nov 2 @ 9:59 PM EDT
A5: No--I think the SA only approach would make implementation too intimidating when grades are highly valued. #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 10:00 PM EDT
I think MI ignition could be used for any type of assessment, as long as it is an authentic measurement of their learning. #gcisdchat
    In reply to @CHHSLiaison
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 10:00 PM EDT
NO! Practice is important! Also, mastery is mastery regardless of MI or format. #gcisdchat
    • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 9:57 PM EDT
Q5: Should student choice through MIs be ‘reserved’ for summative assessments only, why or why not? #gcisdchat
  • TheMrsMagana Nov 2 @ 10:01 PM EDT
@jhylemon: A5: No—I think the SA only approach would make implementation too intimidating when grades are highly valued. #gcisdchat” 👍🏾
  • LeslieSingles Nov 2 @ 10:01 PM EDT
A5: Let those Ss shine in their own way as much as possible! There will always be "system" limitations, but Ts can b creative too #gcisdchat
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 10:03 PM EDT
    YES 🙌🏼 #gcisdchat
    • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 10:00 PM EDT
I think MI ignition could be used for any type of assessment, as long as it is an authentic measurement of their learning. #gcisdchat
      In reply to @CHHSLiaison
  • RichRichCHHS Nov 2 @ 10:03 PM EDT
A4: I deliberately avoid sticking to one type of MI bc a. Not all Ss benefit from 1 type b. you need to keep things novel & fresh #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 10:04 PM EDT
I wonder if letting them shine inadvertently produces better attitudes towards those times they do have to work with the "system."#gcisdchat
    In reply to @LeslieSingles
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 10:05 PM EDT
Q6: In what ways can MIs for an individual change with time and experience? #gcisdchat
  • amyleitner06 Nov 2 @ 10:05 PM EDT
Yes! I like that you said validation, each student should know their skill set is valued by their teacher and peers. #gcisdchat
    In reply to @ThompsonPanther
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 10:06 PM EDT
A6: As they gain confidence they may be more willing to demonstrate a MI that was always there, but they didn't realize was. #gcisdchat
    In reply to @CHHSLiaison
  • CMSVisser Nov 2 @ 10:08 PM EDT
A6: I absolutely feel MIs can strengthen depending on how much time they are given to use them successfully in various settings. #gcisdchat
  • RichRichCHHS Nov 2 @ 10:08 PM EDT
A5: HECK NO! The check points along the way are just as valuable as the end point. MI strategies help foster the mastery process! #gcisdchat
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 10:08 PM EDT
The more opportunity&exposure to MI, the more a person understands. I also think they can adapt a bit as we go through situations #gcisdchat
  • LeslieSingles Nov 2 @ 10:08 PM EDT
A6: OMG we change SO MUCH w/ age. Ss that say they can't math- I always tell them to give their brains TIME! It is easier in 20s #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 10:09 PM EDT
A6 in GCISD we value investing in yourself, pushing yourself outside comfort zone from time to time to see what u are made of #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 10:10 PM EDT
Great point! If they aren't practicing a particular MI then how will they ever get better at it? #gcisdchat
    In reply to @CMSVisser
  • RichRichCHHS Nov 2 @ 10:11 PM EDT
A6: Just like anything in life your passions, interests, and preferences change over time. Learning is no different! #gcisdchat
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 10:12 PM EDT
Q7: In what ways have you had students demonstrate their learning through their unique MIs? #gcisdchat
  • CMSVisser Nov 2 @ 10:12 PM EDT
You are so spot on!! It's definitely moving thru GCISD! Coming from Elementary to Secondary I get to take part in this shift! :) #gcisdchat

A6: if you told 10 yr old Melissa that I would teach Spanish I would laugh in your face. I hated speaking it! Look at me now 💃🏻 #gcisdchat
  • LeslieSingles Nov 2 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A7: Many Ss prefer to verbally explain scientific concepts. 1-on-1 reassessments make them more comfortable sometimes. #gcisdchat
  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 10:14 PM EDT
"Here are the standards...how can you best demonstrate mastery?" #StudentDesignTeam #LastYear #gcisdchat

  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 10:19 PM EDT

The "menu" is 1 of my favs. Each menu is designed to reach all MIs & through #Studentchoice Ss chose a path that leads through 3-5 of them
  • CHHSLiaison Nov 2 @ 10:25 PM EDT

  • ThompsonPanther Nov 2 @ 10:28 PM EDT
Definitely want to explore menus more, and maybe even do a reflective piece where AVID S's think about their MI #gcisdchat
  • CHHS_LC Nov 2 @ 10:30 PM EDT
Big thanks to @GCISD for allowing @CHHSLiaison and @CHHS_LC to moderate & to everyone for your participation. #gcisdchat
