#ALedchat Archive
#ALedchat is a weekly chat on Twitter about education topics. It is held each Monday from 9-10pmCST. While the discussion on #ALedchat continues on Twitter well beyond our weekly one-hour chat session, this platform affords us the opportunity to extend, expand and share the conversation with an even greater audience. Educators from across the state of Alabama, and the world, can come here to find encouragement, support, resources, professional growth opportunities and advice, while providing the same to their colleagues.

Sometimes it's harder to give up things we know than it is to add things that are new.
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
Ashley- Science & Drama Excited to participate in
Welcome, Matt! Glad you joined us tonight!
Welcome Ashley! Glad you are here!
Hello to the awesome team members - & !
Jornea Erwin, Alabama Technology in Motion- Region 3
Suzanne Crist. Principal. Dodge Elem, Mobile, Al
A1: Provide models. A picture is a worth 1,000 words. Let teachers see the type of instruction you are after.
A1: We have to model different ways to facilitate learning and allow Ts to observe good facilitators to see change.
We have to show them, literally, the way.
I think it starts with How? " How do we solve this problem?" How did you get your answer? https://t.co/2R38eekLdG
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
A1: plan out meaningful essential questions
Glad yall are here tonight!
Glad you are here Jornea.
A1: I try to encourage my teachers to tape (video/audio)a lesson to see who's talking
Summer Richardson, US/Global history, Queens, NY
Judy Cornelius Tech Director Prince of Peace Catholic Hoover AL
A1: First thing to do is release control to students..PBL…allow for student voice and choice. https://t.co/q1pN4tUAMY
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
A1: as Ts we have to understand it's not about us. It's about the Ss and their voice.
A1: You must model that type of teaching in PD! Noone wants a lecture as their PD!
A1 By being encouraging and motivating them in a positive way, and not to put extreme pressure.
Welcome, Judy! Glad you're here tonight!
A1: follow our students lead, ask good questions
This is so powerful! https://t.co/kw1upu18C0
A1: I try to encourage my teachers to tape (video/audio)a lesson to see who's talking
A1: We have to model the power of really listening!
Just had this conversation with a teacher earlier today... sometimes we are our own worst enemies. https://t.co/fXOxogZ358
Sometimes it's harder to give up things we know than it is to add things that are new.
A1: Practice and see what Ss are capable of, which is a lot! You don't have to give the knowledge!
A1 we have to intentionally plan what the walk lookalike and why the walk is important and model it (why, what, and how)
Deidra W.Crain ELA, Broadcast, Journalism at Pelham High School
A1: Stop, Collaborate, & LISTEN! https://t.co/PC5j38qS3K
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
This is new for me as well. Glad someone else is stepping out of there comfort zone.
Hope the conversation went well!
A1) Visit other classrooms in all subject areas where Ts are facilitating learning https://t.co/dziPAl5R0C
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
A1: Encourage teachers to allow students to "do" in class, not just "be" in class. They learn by doing, after all.
A1 As Admin. we must model this 1st by placing learning at the center of all meetings, interactions, etc. https://t.co/nuhB1dlQSR
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
A1: It's the fear of letting go of control! Preplanning & engagement strategies help take a step in the right direction.
A1: Consider you don't have all the answers
Hey Friend! Glad you're here! Kudos for taking a risk!
A1: actually show them how. Model in all meetings and Pd
A1: We're currently working on PBL. St voice and choice is critical.
through modeling and PBLs. Constant discussion with my Ts and then seeing me in their classrooms.
It begins with relationship; getting to know your folks and them you; finding their interest and need https://t.co/ev0PVw68bR
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
A1: have to get Ts to improve management and learn to let go of power to give Ss ownership
A2. You to show you trust them. Allow the room to look different every time you enter so they dont panic about what youre thinking
Almost all teachers do their best, so it's important to allow them to observe others, video clips, etc. Replicate the best
A1: Encourage risk taking with our Ts, have them step out of their comfort zones.
A1) Say it over and over again - "The one doing the most talking is the one doing the most learning!!!!"
A1: Administrators should be more strategic about what they validate when they visit classrooms.
Glad you're here, Sandi! Kudos for modeling risk-taking!
Encourage teachers to participate in instructional rounds.
A1: silence is okay, encourage Ss to participate when there are Qs. I encourage Ss to answer confidently and being wrong is ok.
A1: Know good question stems and have them ready!
Developing Grit in Emerging Learners: How to make these invisible thought processes visible? https://t.co/TZMrG3OsTv
A1.. As Ts utilize fellow teachers strengths and collaborate to make sure Ss are reaching their potential .
Lee Frix, Health & PE, Haleyville High
It always goes back to relationship, huh?!
A1: Without Ss, we would have no one to teach. We have to stop, listen, and learn. Not just to Ss, but other Ts too
yes! Can't be afraid to fail!
Glad you are here Coach! Jump right in!
A1 They are not going to change unless the culture of the school, led by administration, encourages and facilitates change
A1 Also important to know how to train kids to take more ownership. They don't know how unless we show them
*******Q2 coming up in 1 minute*******
Listening is a skill. Listen to hear, not to answer Back
A1: No powerpoints or demos! - Ss should be discussing content. Anything I would demo to show a concept, the Ss should be doing.
A1: also allow student choice/freedom on projects
How do you teach management without using a sage on the stage as a control/management method?
A1: We have to trust that students have the ability to learn without us controlling. Show them we have faith in them to learn.
A1 foster more collaboration and cooperative group work so the teacher can be a guide versus the "sage on the stage"
A1: Encouraging the use of PBLs, the results are amazing when you let the Ss show you what they can do.
Ed Psych Professor at AUM- Joining a little late (grading)
do you have a recommendation for a good walk through tool?
Hello ! Todd, elem principal in CA...first time here, but already impressed with the conversation!
Q2: It’s time to clean out one-size-fits-all PD! What are some of your fave PD experiences you want added to toolboxes everywhere?
A1-Remind them pilots don't learn to fly by completing worksheets; it requires doing not just being; great line
Glad you are here Todd! Jump right in!
Student voice and choice shows trust, which equates to less need to do all the talking.
A1: Embracing gradual release of responsibility - I do, we do, you do together, you do alone!
A1: I've used time cards when observing. Ts can only speak for the amount of time on card. Each time is less than time before.
It has been our experience that group contracts work really well. These contracts Ss create. https://t.co/gLIrCEmei8
How do you teach management without using a sage on the stage as a control/management method?
A2: Teacher choice is as important as student choice. We need to allow Ts to grow based on interest and passion with PD!
When students are engaged, then management is not an issue.
A2: We do Teacher Academy at Winterboro. Differentiated PD & Small Group Instruction-Haven’t had Monday faculty meeting in YEARS!
This group is ON FIRE tonight!! Spring Cleaning the Educators' Toolbox!
A2: I like to have choice in my PD
- Craig Henson - Principal in Lamar Co., but live in Northport/Tusc area.
A2: PD is hard for specialty areas, especially if the school system is small. Allow ts to go and spend the day with a master t.
A2 was really good this weekend. I live that model for PD
A2. Just sent out part of our plan. Investing a lot in UDL and understanding the why in our planning
A2: I like action/movement oriented PD...like our scavenger hunt at the beginning of the year!
Share so we can all grow! https://t.co/YUXXIrR2ML
Q2: It’s time to clean out one-size-fits-all PD! What are some of your fave PD experiences you want added to toolboxes everywhere?
A:2 PVHS and Jefcoed are using SREB and it is powerful. Everything is student focused and easy 4 Ts to apply.
A2: I love time to collaborate with other Ts teaching my grade and subject in a "safe zone"- no district staff!
Differentiated PD Bites... 15 minutes before school once a week. Technology, apps, Social & Emotional Learning, etc.....
A2: I love the Edcamp model! Automatically differentiated. Our instruction is, so why can't our PD be too?
A2: Twitter chats, Educator Choice, Expert Blogs
Ideas: mini-edcamps, let Ts choose themes for year and work with group for yr, allow singleton teachers to go outside building
A2: simply ask interest or base pd on teachers personal goals- choice & voice make PD meaningful and relevant
Andrew: wonderer, hoper, maker. Popping in on to get in on the intervention.
A2: Freedom to focus on PD that Ts are passionate about, and will benefit Ss and broader school community.
I loved the "Experts Down the Hall" PD we had at HHS. Loved learning from my colleagues, in their classrooms and their content.
Tell us more about the nuts and bolts structure of it https://t.co/j0YOrsgdj2
A2: We do Teacher Academy at Winterboro. Differentiated PD & Small Group Instruction-Haven’t had Monday faculty meeting in YEARS!
Yes! Our student teacher learned this!
A2: PD that is intentional and in a SG setting. PD differentiated to specific content is always best! https://t.co/JUi0YzrnPv
Q2: It’s time to clean out one-size-fits-all PD! What are some of your fave PD experiences you want added to toolboxes everywhere?
A2- Love our Genius Hour CPT-
No More Paper Chace: Unleashing Our Collective Genius (Part 2) https://t.co/C6wfPO2UzR
R. Payne Understanding Poverty- we have to understand where Ss come from before we can fully know them. Begins with relationships.
Teachers give up their planning pd on Fridays- Job Embedded PD geared to what they want and need- lead teachers lead!
A2: District-wide edcamps...let teachers/admin take ownership of their own learning!
A2: I really enjoyed a PD where we did a lesson from the students perspectives to understand the role of a career coach
A2 An edcamp model were the contributors create the break-out session topics and partipants lead the duscussion w/best practices
A2.. My fav PD is when it helps me grow as teacher based on my interests. I love when I can see it work for MY Ss.
A2-Just like Ss, we must scaffold & differentiate PD for Ts. It should also be data-driven & modeled like we expect their lessons.
A2: So many great answers, I don't know what to say except I agree on all of them. PD is more than mtg in a room all day
I remain firmly convinced that peer observation and peer collaboration is the most meaningful PD.
Sorry to come in late - Adrian from Bozeman, MT. Looking forward to my first ALedchat!
we have also had students lead from time to time. https://t.co/EDm1NEwWMW
Teachers give up their planning pd on Fridays- Job Embedded PD geared to what they want and need- lead teachers lead!
Very true! Not always easy, but as we know, the things that are most impt are rarely the easiest to accomplish
We all do! Why do we make it so difficult?
I love edcamp as well and it def has its place but is there not also a place for a focused PD https://t.co/scBWUGlEsa
A2: I love the Edcamp model! Automatically differentiated. Our instruction is, so why can't our PD be too?
Welcome! Glad you are here!
I want to do mini-edcamps & rocks/stinks with our staff.
A2: I thoroughly enjoy interactive PD. Much more significant when engulfed in PD process.
A2: Middle level education built on understanding young adolescents
Why do you think more teachers don't seek out their own learning?
A2 Practical PD. If I can use it by next week, I don't need it.
Agree. Even if they observe something "not great" you're bound to learn from it...Different perspective
Welcome friend! Glad you are here!
We give PD credit for participation.
We give PD credit for participation.
A2: Best PD opportunities..engagement strategies, project based learning, book studies/collaboration, tech, interactive notebooks.
A2: Job embedded PD. Create a flexible learning sched for Ss so Ts can learn during their school day. Relevant and living!
A2a - I've done several flipped PD sessions, esp the "how-to" sessions so they are rewindable & convenient.
A2 With tech PD- like having "playgrounds" for newbies to exploreand "show and tells" for techies to connect
*******Q3 coming up in 1 minute*******
A2: Get rid of staff meetings...replace w/ teacher-led PD...cohorts, Google Certified Educator, or Genius Hour...
Thanks! https://t.co/f4AKRrRCHp
Teachers give up their planning pd on Fridays- Job Embedded PD geared to what they want and need- lead teachers lead!
Q2- is a great example! https://t.co/RDCl3gqn5S
Q2: : the best free, relevant, timely, PD out there. Ain't that right He called me a genius yesterday :)
A2: MODEL! I want to see it happening in a classroom.. Not someone telling me about it who doesn't even have a classroom
Yes! We have used this method with EL! It will certainly open your eyes!
Agree! An alarming % of Ts have never seen another teacher teach!
Q3: Remove immediately --> Grades without feedback. What advice do you give to teachers on making this shift?
Do yall do peer observations at your school? https://t.co/U4j2fnp23j
A2: MODEL! I want to see it happening in a classroom.. Not someone telling me about it who doesn't even have a classroom
Our system-wide PD is called iShowcase.Ts present. 4 rotations. Ts select PD that fits their needs.
Would definitely like for you to tell the family about that https://t.co/5JjhO4VeXu
we have also had students lead from time to time. https://t.co/EDm1NEwWMW
Teachers give up their planning pd on Fridays- Job Embedded PD geared to what they want and need- lead teachers lead!
A2: like to do "door2door" visits to T by grade level to find, facilitate & followup with T ideas and offer 1:1 support
A2: Too much PD scratches teachers where they don't itch. The best leaders figure out where the teachers itch or create an itch.
We do something like that in our district, too. Teacher-led, teacher choice.
dude, did you just quote yourself? That's some high-level reflective thinking there
A3: Set up the rubric ahead of time...so much out there to help in this process!
A3: For some it is a process. We have to find a starting place and just START. When we see positive results, we change practice.
LOVE the input that is being shared tonight! I will definitely have to archive this chat!
Grading practices that move learning forward ... instead of just being a tool to rank/sort kids
A1: (late) but is the best facilitator I've seen. Learned from him at
The unaware will remain unaware until we make them aware of their mistakes - this is why we need feedback!
ICTR-In-Class Tech Resource. T's volunteer not to watch a hallway of do cafeteria duty. Instead, they Get in the classrooms
It does! It makes you think about what really engages students. Am I engaged? If so, how can I recreate this in my CR?
A3: It's like a doctor telling me I have a broken arm, then doing nothing to fix it or help me understand how to get well.
A3: grades w/out feedback and timely grades. Ss need to hear why the grade is what it is and see what they made.
Tell us more! https://t.co/ZsccnvceQa
ICTR-In-Class Tech Resource. T's volunteer not to watch a hallway of do cafeteria duty. Instead, they Get in the classrooms
A3 If you leave just a low grade the student will be left feeling discouraged. What can they do better?
A3: Have to dig deeper here. For ex: Does the Tr feel everything needs to be grade? Not enough time to provide feedback
A3 - To me feedback is far more crucial than a grade & much less subjective. Feedback inspires Ss to dig deeper/heighten learning!
Exactly! A great way to grow teacher leaders! Find the ones doing great things and help them share! https://t.co/A7fqkUF2dy
I rarely do whole group meetings anymore. Almost all meetings are break out by topic or content and led by Ts
Can you flesh that out in more detail? https://t.co/06dIINsq6o
ICTR-In-Class Tech Resource. T's volunteer not to watch a hallway of do cafeteria duty. Instead, they Get in the classrooms
A3: Beginning the conversation of what grades communicate is a great start. Why do we give grades? Why do they matter for Ss?
They would much rather volunteer their expertise for T's & S's instead..... ICTR......
A3: we talk about it on how we do their evaluation. I will mark there ever where they want but we will have the convo we need
A3: Learning stops once a grade is given- Opens doors for continuous learning!
I want to hire teachers who are itching to learn, and seek out their own PD!
A3 Flip it! Give feedback & no grade! If you must give grade, not until changes in feedback are complete https://t.co/I0vagaVMA8
Q3: Remove immediately --> Grades without feedback. What advice do you give to teachers on making this shift?
Grades without feedback is like https://t.co/cHGu94DIb0
A3: It's like a doctor telling me I have a broken arm, then doing nothing to fix it or help me understand how to get well.
A3: Ss don't grow without feedback. Let them see results and why where they can meet the goals they have set!
A3: Consider not giving a “grade,” just feedback at first. Students want the grade, we all want them to improve.
A3:You can't fix something if you don't know what is wrong with it. Plain & simple! Ss are the same way.Model and set expectations.
Sometimes we do have to create the itch. BC sometimes, we don't know that we don't know what we need to know! :)
The point is to learn. We learn best from understanding our mistakes and facing our misconceptions. Feedback releases the wonder
A3: Should be undertaken in the context of a thorough examination of one's own grading practices. More feedback, less numbers
Only teacher they may have watched was while student-teaching. Many things change.
A3: I mix written cues with discussion on most graded material, especially assessments. Try to get Ss to bridge process/outcome
I shared this idea with a teacher & she did it on her Ss' essays. Said it was awesome!
yes and quick video meetings are effective too
Why, why, why..students deserve to know why…learning should continue from receiving a grade https://t.co/O8TQtYGzeM
Q3: Remove immediately --> Grades without feedback. What advice do you give to teachers on making this shift?
Q3: are we as district leaders modeling purposeful feedback to our teachers?
A3- Ss and Ts alike need/deserve affirmation, validation, and feedback
Love use of rubrics. Allows Ss and Ts to focus on targeted skills without getting hung up on the fluff.
I agree but as I think back on some things from I wonder what could I have done to make it better? https://t.co/JPzvttbAf4
A3 If you leave just a low grade the student will be left feeling discouraged. What can they do better?
Not enough and my excuse is the same as teachers- time. :(
Teachers enjoy being facilitators for each other... Team work, peer leadership, better use of time-on-task....
I LOVE flipping meetings...give the other stuff in an email & then focus on building teachers' toolboxes! https://t.co/BkkXJi75Rp
yes and quick video meetings are effective too
A3: If we must have grades they need to be more of a product derived from a reflective process for both Ss and Ts.
A3: also continually let Ss know they are more than a letter or number...that a grade on a test does not define them.
Awesome question! Starts at the top!
A3: Should be meaning behind the grade;rubrics are helpful and can show/guide Ss. With rubric Ss can almost decide their own grade
*******Q4 coming up in 1 minute*******
A3: Just like with our Ss, we have to share the Ws with our Ts - Why did I earn this? What do I need to do to grow? etc...
A3: What about no grades- just standards? Conferences with Ss for feedback and learning targets to track progress?
Changing grading practices w/out thinking deeply abt the very purpose of grades is unlikely to have significant impact on learning
Very late. . . .Keith George, ALSDE/AMSTI
always hear, "Due to time constraints......." Make the time!
Glad you are here! Jump in!
YES!! Guides the process and focuses everyone on what matters most! https://t.co/iBhAcDI5wR
Love use of rubrics. Allows Ss and Ts to focus on targeted skills without getting hung up on the fluff.
Welcome, Keith! Glad you're jumping in!
Q4: Stop allowing Ts to work in isolation. Learning is a social endeavor! What does this look like in a school where it works?
A3: "Real learning is in the revision; real teaching is in the feedback."
A3 (pt2) For Ts - Why is this important for our Ss? What more can we do to improve student outcomes? Why does this need a grade?
A4: You need to find common planning time in the course of the school day..early-outs and late starts are not enough!
Yes! Before we throw something out, we better be very careful that we have thought through its replacement.
A3 Many don't know what feedback is. Grades w/o an explanation & opportunity for improvement aren't formative & don't allow growth
A4: At the middle level - teaming! That's what teams are for. No more independent contractors
The student has no idea what they could have done better - a low grade says nothing on how to get better.
A4: Common planning, book studies, PLCs, instructional rounds, peer coaching... are ways to learn together.
A4: Common preps for teams, varied preps so grade level and content areas can meet regularly
A4 design time during the day is a must.
A4: pair LP cross curriculum helps get Ts out and about. Works well. Builds uncommon groups
A4: We as teachers need to come out of isolation- so , make time to chat,
A3: it's like Auburn coach yelling "play harder" against Alabama...😳
A4: Teachers lead Power PD Bites. Empower them. Administration are generalists, Teachers are the specialists. Trust them
A4: instructional rounds are by far the most effective. Teachers now feel comfy walking into peers rooms and having peers enter
A4: structures are in place for teachers to collaborate - time, space, resources
"Done is better than perfect when perfect never gets done" I've seen too many things labeled a failure b/c of 1/2 done
A4: Teacher rounds. Twitter chat. Social media for the classroom. My Ss & colleagues love our class Instagram
change without reflection, collaboration, and synergy among stakeholders can be a dicey situation at best https://t.co/RzpTdMxLmx
Yes! Before we throw something out, we better be very careful that we have thought through its replacement.
We could have gone all night without that comment :)
A3: Spontaneous PLC meetings in the hallway ... and in the lunchroom ... and in the parking lot, ...
A4: Ts planning cross-curriculum lessons together. Ex: FACS Ts collab with core Ts.
Q4: looks like a place where we are ok with failing forward together...as a team!!!
A4: encouraging and allowing for cross-curricular interaction. Ex: Worked with Cal Teacher on math side of Rev.War Battles.
A4: In small schools, isolation is tough to overcome. Your learning community may be composed in people in other states.
A4: Ts need to be able to float around and see what's going on. Visit other schools to see what's going on there.
A4 Common planning times for grade levels. Planning, discussion cross grade levels by subjects.
Meaning we shouldn't skip over something in our CR just because, if it's imp, we will fit it in.
A4: Ts participating in instructional rounds and collaborative planning opportunities. https://t.co/q5yvgsD8Ef
Q4: Stop allowing Ts to work in isolation. Learning is a social endeavor! What does this look like in a school where it works?
A4: Schedule common collab times. Provide social PD like EdCamps, Tech Carousels, Eat & Tweets. Allow peer Obs to spark talk.
A4: Why would you row alone when there are other people in the same boat?!
Team teaching. Cross curriculum student writings. Middle schools do this off well. Prime example, HMS's 6th grade
Yes! We need to make sure they know the power of an online PLN! https://t.co/6zyy54f0u9
A4: In small schools, isolation is tough to overcome. Your learning community may be composed in people in other states.
That's the step we skip. Eg: late work shouldn't damage a grade but SHOULD cause (other) consequences https://t.co/08jxg0JcPW
Yes! Before we throw something out, we better be very careful that we have thought through its replacement.
A4 I have an inclusion model where Spec. Ed and Reg. Ed. team teach. Swapping roles and using flexible groupings.
A4: Trust. And Listen to each other. We fight the same battles everyday, we tell or kids to work together, we should, too!
A4: also allowing Ts to voice options without group decision making or group thinking. Allow their voice to be JUST heard
IME Collaboration easily confused w/collegiality
Focus on outcomes, not process/content/department https://t.co/P8k2oRqri4
Q4: Stop allowing Ts to work in isolation. Learning is a social endeavor! What does this look like in a school where it works?
A4: We have to create a culture that is willing to put learning and others first and our egos and pride last. Never easy!
A4: What happens in the class, stays in the class. Not! Collaborate & share, & be open to other Ts who can impact your room and Ss
Tell us about those eat and tweets https://t.co/O0NFjUS8bk
A4: Schedule common collab times. Provide social PD like EdCamps, Tech Carousels, Eat & Tweets. Allow peer Obs to spark talk.
A4 - PLC's that are need-based & data-driven. Fully involved coaching & mentoring programs. Job-embedded & ongoing.
A4: Common planning time has been mentioned, Also common lunch, common duty, common recess, etc. Give Ts a chance to talk.
*******Q5 coming up in 1 minute*******
I'm down with an eat and tweet and I don't even know what it is!! https://t.co/kaQX5GJ9lc
Tell us about those eat and tweets https://t.co/O0NFjUS8bk
A4: Schedule common collab times. Provide social PD like EdCamps, Tech Carousels, Eat & Tweets. Allow peer Obs to spark talk.
A4: The best leaders helps teachers feel secure. Secure teachers become vulnerable. Vulnerable teachers collaborate.
A4: Planning/teaming time for Ts is difficult for small schools to provide. Usually means extra time.
"Eat & Tweets" sounds interesting. Please explain.
A4 work as team by collaborating, using technology. My dept started designated times to communicate, see what working, what's not
A3: We need to get away from sorting and ranking students. Feedback that promotes learning is crucial. Grades sort and rank.
A4: quarterly, SPE gets a sub and we collaborate for a full day. We should do that per dept. https://t.co/jGkWK96PPM
Q4: Stop allowing Ts to work in isolation. Learning is a social endeavor! What does this look like in a school where it works?
A4: Some ideas to find common planning time:
-cross-grade level tutoring

Q5: A tool to add to the toolbox is to find authentic audiences for student work. How do we make this happen?
. common time is key, but it requires a common philosophy, common norms, common vision https://t.co/kUwxEblht7
A4: Common planning time has been mentioned, Also common lunch, common duty, common recess, etc. Give Ts a chance to talk.
Always provide food at a twitter party! Right ? https://t.co/4FTAqfNafi
"Eat & Tweets" sounds interesting. Please explain.
This is an opportunity where our Ts learn how to create PLNs through Twitter and part. in an edchat during lunch!
A4: Focus on teacher leaders in the school. They are great advocates and can nudge others along.
Planning/designing has to be focused and not a venting session
A) together watch video of a stranger teaching & discuss
B) watch each other teach
C) watch/discuss videos of each other teaching
A4: Consistency in meeting time and location are critical, focused agenda, Ts need time to talk
Agree. And Ts setting expectations for their time & a collective commitment to focus on student learning. https://t.co/w9opy71Io1
A4 design time during the day is a must.
This is such a problem sometimes. Ss miss out on great things bc the T doesn't want to share. Ridiculous. https://t.co/1vDHqpiLg7
A4: We have to create a culture that is willing to put learning and others first and our egos and pride last. Never easy!
Creative scheduling.... Forget the past. Move forward as if you are in a newly built school with a new staff.
A5:End-of-unit group project presentations..invite parents, community, district office admin to see critical thinking & creativity
Sometimes CONTRASTING vision, philosophy is good.
A5 plenty of authentic audiences right in school AND in community! And globally online
A5: if the Ss work is a visual such as an art piece or model, show it off at the other district schools. Also, social media.
TY Collaboration is hard work, especially if no agreed upon outcome. IMO many like isolation teaching used to have
Can't wait to catch up on this tomorrow!! Headed to bed- it's been a long day! Great chat!!
A5: Project based learning, student presentations/demonstrations,.. allow for increased opportunities for sharing.
A5: The Gold Standards of PBL change up the audience factor! Hashtags, tweets, any method of Ss making their work public is huge!
I've seen a few examples on great instructional rounds but most don't have the necessary lead up/follow up. How is it done right?
Yes; if we all look at the issue from the same window we will miss the other great vantage points https://t.co/ULhI7grjvO
Sometimes CONTRASTING vision, philosophy is good.
A5: We seek out collaborators and experts. We commonly use experts in the community, especially for our career tech projects.
A4: Common planning, peer observations, team teaching, etc.
A5 if any of you went to training, he gave the most powerful tool for this that I have seen CPT form
I like the idea of room swaps. Ts use other classrooms to change the environment. Ss and Ts see other Ss work.
A5: I ask my kiddoes always, "So what? Who needs to know this? Who would this help?" Then we seek out those people!
A4 (pt2) Eat & Tweet - this also allows Ts a "gracious space" to learn and grow together - all in a social setting!
First time participating in . Wonderful conversation!
A3: I like a grading approach that is S cntrd. takes into account the why? b/c the S isnt turning in work or isnt understanding?
A5: What is “authentic” for the Ss? Who do they want to see their work?
A5: Kidblog (for writing)
A5: Google hangout with another class! Have older students teach younger ones.
A5: Blogs, QR codes, invite members of the community, presentations to other classes.
A5: We use our library frequently to display student projects. Other grades & parents love coming in to see what is going on!
A5: sharing learning through tech/media- use Skype/ hangout - to share with people in the field of study or another classroom
A5 We often showcase art w/performances and shows. I've seen Ts highlight work in the content areas with lit. & math nights etc.
A5…showcase, showcase, showcase…people will come! Students will also enjoy the sharing process. https://t.co/APwRrC94Hz
Q5: A tool to add to the toolbox is to find authentic audiences for student work. How do we make this happen?
On video projects we've done, we've posted on YouTube. Also freely share with other classes that are interested. Ss like the 👍🏻
A5: verbal assignment could be read at a literary event during school hours...peers love to hear others work.
A5: Sharing on Twitter. Sharing with other grade level classes. Skype with an out of state class. Family night to share
Our Ss didn't know they wanted the world to see their debate, but they LOVED it & did great! https://t.co/A4hoyHHDhj
A5 pt2 I really had an ah-ha this year that student work is the mirror. for those serous about
A5-The world of exposure/collab is at our fingertips for broadening our audience. Use every available mode in/out of your circles!
Always up for a share-session with History & Health.
A5: Project anonymous examples using an LCD in a PD session; have a backchannel set up to foster discussion
Q5: Twitter, being responsible for T-ing their peers a piece of the unit, Videos shared with other Ts, Class blogs
A5: Allow Ss to choose & have a choice in how they display their work. My students love the Storymaker app & directed drawings.
A5: Tech can help- tweet, blog, etc, but live presentations can have impact. Few service orgs (Lions, etc) will refuse kids visits
YES! Parents will take ANY chance to come on campus...especially if showcasing their child's awesomeness! https://t.co/t3uUz4yKBX
A5…showcase, showcase, showcase…people will come! Students will also enjoy the sharing process. https://t.co/APwRrC94Hz

*******Q6 coming up in 1 minute*******
"Student work is the mirror" >> POWERFUL. https://t.co/tdA4XKBzuG
A5 pt2 I really had an ah-ha this year that student work is the mirror. for those serous about
A5: Study your students and learn the audiences that they value.
A5: sorry, left that off response. Allergy meds not helping.
All of us are smarter than any one of us but one of us may have a vision that will set all of us free https://t.co/5htFU0Mmaj
First time participating in . Wonderful conversation!
Q6: (Beware; Controversial) Lesson plans only show intentions & not what really happens in a classroom. What is a better option?
I think a combination of both is important. Kids need to learn that social media can be used for learning https://t.co/3P1C2u0hmk
A5: Tech can help- tweet, blog, etc, but live presentations can have impact. Few service orgs (Lions, etc) will refuse kids visits
A5- Every argumentative essay is a letter to the editor in waiting. Ask newspaper to run op-eds from students.
A5: If you show it, they will come.
https://t.co/g7oXyn6I8R
Q5: A tool to add to the toolbox is to find authentic audiences for student work. How do we make this happen?
Technology is the future. Work, college, military.... Teach it well!... JS
Ask mayor/city council for real problems. Student group w/the best solution (cross-curricular learning!) gets to present publicly
Yes, include both! https://t.co/PTxi7SbbgJ
I think a combination of both is important. Kids need to learn that social media can be used for learning https://t.co/3P1C2u0hmk
A5: Tech can help- tweet, blog, etc, but live presentations can have impact. Few service orgs (Lions, etc) will refuse kids visits
Creativity in the mix. Awesome!
A6: we do reflections at our school. Allows us to think about the lesson and not the actual LP.
Students would love being published!
Great idea...and it promotes a love of reading...winner winner, chicken dinner!
A5: Instagram has changed the way my kids see their work! They love looking at pics of our daily activities and what they create
A5: I'm creating learning galleries for our school via . This allows Ss to showcase their process and product!
We do that at HHS. Our speech students will be doing presentations 2 admin in a couple of weeks https://t.co/T8GZ4H01sh
Ask mayor/city council for real problems. Student group w/the best solution (cross-curricular learning!) gets to present publicly
A6: weekly reflections that allow for not only better planning the next week but also the next year
A6: has us do LPs retrospectively; on the back end. That way we document what was actually accomplished/attempted.
LOVE this, and would love to learn more about it!
A6: Our lesson plan reflection is a doc that teachers turn based on the previous week with standards, etc..
A6: Get into the classrooms. Curriculum is what happens when the t's shutthe door. T's are the principals of their classrooms
A6 ever-evolving design plans that admin can see and other Ts can use to collaborate. So much better. The plans are changing hourly
A6-They are plans that guide, not details of end results! Include imp. parts but don't script. Spend that time on improving inst.
We have a school twitter feed () & hashtag for all community to share our story! https://t.co/NDlro5WBio
A5: Instagram has changed the way my kids see their work! They love looking at pics of our daily activities and what they create
A6: We are in trouble if we need a warning label before challenging our traditions, even one as sacred as written lesson plans
Love this idea! https://t.co/IihtTSvYAl
A6: has us do LPs retrospectively; on the back end. That way we document what was actually accomplished/attempted.
A6 who is the lesson plan for shouldn't it be fluid and a working document. Just like learning it isn't a one size fits all is it?
Q6: ALL Ts should use all components of Google Classroom. Your lesson plans, the edits, it's all there. https://t.co/90n0aJbSli
Q6: (Beware; Controversial) Lesson plans only show intentions & not what really happens in a classroom. What is a better option?
WOW! I'm enjoying all of the insightful responses that I forget to respond to the Qs! What a great tribe!
What if we prepared our students to perform on Friday nights like our athletic teams? What kind of assignments would we give?
A6: planning is imperative for a smooth learning process. But, adding daily reflections on the good, and bad, will help next time.
A6: Online lesson plans have value for parents and sick students. Visiting classrooms is what has value for administrators.
A6: LP's without reflection are one step away from a waste
A2 The best $ I've ever provided for teacher PD is to pay for a sub so the tchr can strategically observe their cohorts.
And ask local businesses and community members problems they are trying to solve. Present them to Ss.
A6: weekly reflections that allow for not only better planning the next week but also the next year
A6: The great ones plan and reflect. The others spend planning time making it look like they planned.
A6; Knowing your folks as an admin allows for a greater understanding of how much oversight is needed in regards to LP's
with proper planning. YES!
Definitely! It's truly a working doc to guide the Ts & provide documentation for what's taught. https://t.co/9DoqlJDOhy
A6 who is the lesson plan for shouldn't it be fluid and a working document. Just like learning it isn't a one size fits all is it?
A6.. Love our LP reflections! Reminds me of how I can improve or look for other strategies to meet Ss needs
A6: Use a reflective commentary and data to see what's going on.If learning is happening? The lesson plan doesn't matter.
A6: I believe in the power of planning, but student work samples can also tell what kind of learning/instruction is happening. .
A6 True but good teaching takes planning. Ts have to be purposeful w/ questioning, assignments & assessments.Winging it won't work
Yes! https://t.co/iew9T3ykpl
A2 The best $ I've ever provided for teacher PD is to pay for a sub so the tchr can strategically observe their cohorts.
Like the idea of having reflections
A:Q6 never be ready to fully follow your lesson plans be able to flex with them! https://t.co/Y39VoL6w9N
Q6: (Beware; Controversial) Lesson plans only show intentions & not what really happens in a classroom. What is a better option?
A6a: Even after observations, I don't ever recall an admin asking about my LP and what went well/needed work.
it never ceases to amaze me when that happens!
A6 Lesson Anticipation Guides to "guide" lessons with constant reflection
Agreed; great process regardless of the yrs of experience; seasoned vets can still learn from new guys https://t.co/rjCJ8G1sPs
A2 The best $ I've ever provided for teacher PD is to pay for a sub so the tchr can strategically observe their cohorts.
True but if we are not planning for an intentional target, what will we hit? What is the purpose of LPs? https://t.co/R5U8UDQprn
A6 who is the lesson plan for shouldn't it be fluid and a working document. Just like learning it isn't a one size fits all is it?
How bout 1 "point" for entire written plan; 9 "points" for a clear analysis of why things worked or went wrong? Embrace the why
A6: When I was in the classroom, being required to submit lesson plans made me feel as if my judgement was not trusted.
*******Q7 coming up in 1 minute*******
Of course there has to be planning but should be individualized https://t.co/nfTzF5xyEw
A6 True but good teaching takes planning. Ts have to be purposeful w/ questioning, assignments & assessments.Winging it won't work
TONIGHT I'm reminded of why we love the 1-hour chat! (Although the 30-min powerchat + Blab in March was great, too)
Have you tried JoeZoo add-on for audio feedback in Docs? I'm playing...
Good theory. In practice Ts are evaluated on plans and admin rely on it as a statement about the quality of T.
Phone call from the paterfamilias took me away from . Sorry I missed it.
A6 Maybe instead of putting objectives, you can put down a motivating goal so students won't feel intimidated
which is why with PBL the most important part of the planning process is the reflection piece.
sometimes the seasoned vet needs the new guy! If they think it is their idea, they accept and learn.
Are you grading lesson plans now?
great point. Requiring plans seems more like power trip for admin and lack of trust for Ts competence.
A6- What if we called them "Lesson Aspirations" rather than "Lesson Plans"...just saying
just have to be careful not to allow that to keep you from truly planning. I agree but a fine line
A6: Come to my classroom and see what I'm doing! I also think classroom Twitter/Instagram helps. Photo evidence!
Tailored plan that change based on form asses (film for sports) of Ss performance of previous day https://t.co/FLB2feclzS
What if we prepared our students to perform on Friday nights like our athletic teams? What kind of assignments would we give?
A6: This won't be popular, but I believe Universities need to do a better job preparing young Ts in this area.
We don't use our lockers anymore. We've got teachers who display S work on them.
A1. Practice listening. I mean it. Try being QUIET and an attentive listener. You'll be amazed! https://t.co/pCRrdsWm8H
Q1: How do we help educators STOP doing all the talking & be more of a facilitator of learning than a dispenser of information?
AMEN! MT A6: I believe Universities need to do a better job preparing young Ts in this area.
A6: I would not have minded submitting LPs if I thought something happened to them other than being checked off for completion!
Even "Lesson Planning" is different from "Lesson Plans"
A7: one more time.. "The best part of teaching is it matters. The hardest part is every moment matters, everyday."
A: The purpose of LP's is to have a foundation of a lesson. We cannot stop changing https://t.co/IF8JXyXCyh
True but if we are not planning for an intentional target, what will we hit? What is the purpose of LPs? https://t.co/R5U8UDQprn
A6 who is the lesson plan for shouldn't it be fluid and a working document. Just like learning it isn't a one size fits all is it?
A6: Most of my best teaching was not planned. Not sure what that says about me. I write "fantasy plans. :)
A2 Edcamps that T's and admin willingly participate in, book study on Twitter with unique hashtag. https://t.co/dtsaizgUVT
Q2: It’s time to clean out one-size-fits-all PD! What are some of your fave PD experiences you want added to toolboxes everywhere?
Brining Out the Best in Teacher talked about not having Ts turn in lesson plans and sign in each morning.
certainly not! That was meant as a metaphor for recommended the weight of importance of each
A7) I would add what are we doing to prepare students for jobs/ careers that do not exist yet? https://t.co/AxUUkB6klE
A7 - As leaders we constantly frame the mindset of importance & value of Ts. Never allow, "I'm just a teacher!" Culture drives it!
Sharing Ss work is powerful when having discussions with admin or other Ts in the same grade/content area.
Mrs.Ann Miller, my 5th grade teacher from Berkshire Elem. was my caring adult.
Why turn in lessons if no one sees them? It's like turning in homework and getting no feedback. https://t.co/maCoTTQq7F
great point. Requiring plans seems more like power trip for admin and lack of trust for Ts competence.
A6: PLCs creating artifacts/notes/slides beneficial to them. or old school tech -whatever to focus on S growth
LOL! https://t.co/kaR5XhK9rG
certainly not! That was meant as a metaphor for recommended the weight of importance of each
A7: must be authentic and intentional.
A7: Totally love it. You could also replace "kid" with "Teacher" and give it to admins. Ts need to hear positives too
A7: that's why planning is important! It's like goal setting. You feel great once you've met the goal. Now it's a part of you.
A7- after hearing yesterday, I am CONVINCED of the power we have on Ss success;
A7: Nobody can judge you for something they refuse to take on.
I call mine "Fantasy Plans" as I'd be living in a fantasy if they happened like I wrote them.
A7: You make an impact with everything you say and do. It's your choice if it's a positive or negative impact.
probably true as far as your best moment but what about your worst ones. Sometimes consistency out ways those few
Fluid means content may float from day to day or more based on form assess data. Standards are required. https://t.co/vkjfHllFTD
just have to be careful not to allow that to keep you from truly planning. I agree but a fine line
BOOM! Quote of the night! https://t.co/WgB2gOy5PR

great point. Requiring plans seems more like power trip for admin and lack of trust for Ts competence.
"...innovation in schools today is far too focused on improving teaching, not amplifying learning." https://t.co/hGjBNLjd1Y
A7: Ts must obsrv and listen to Ss and C how their wrds, attitudes and actions affect the S. I have seen + & - in placements
A7 The best way to receive that power is instead of thinking like a teacher, also think like a student, too
don't have to turn in our plans. Trusted to do our jobs. Observed enough to show it. Data reflects it too.
I always wanted to purposefully hide messages to admins in my LPs just to see if they would find them. https://t.co/qpCQB3UFax
I used to collect them and write each teacher a note providing feedback. They seemed to like the process.
A6 perhaps goal setting. The analysis or evaluation of what was taught/learned matters more than the plans https://t.co/AOzvm4hlG1
Q6: ALL Ts should use all components of Google Classroom. Your lesson plans, the edits, it's all there. https://t.co/90n0aJbSli
Q6: (Beware; Controversial) Lesson plans only show intentions & not what really happens in a classroom. What is a better option?
Simultaneous great minds...
As teachers we hold a large amount of tools at our disposal. Lesson plans barely skim what we can do https://t.co/biE0lu9Ht3
*******FInal Question coming up in 1 minute*******
I disagree. They write them well but don't know how to implement or react when the plan doesn't go as written.
And why should we as administrators expect them if we do nothing with them? Perfect quote of the night. https://t.co/In82F27l4I
BOOM! Quote of the night! https://t.co/WgB2gOy5PR

Young Ts ARE prepared in this area, but no one looks at detailed plans, so they do what they see others do.
A7: building individual relationships is huge, each Ss is a little different, learn what makes them each special
Yes! This is how it should be (and was during my first half dozen or so years as a teacher).
a7: Leaders have to be willing to share their personal failures in regards to connecting w/ Ss and the consequences. Learn from it
A7.. Look for the positives in a day. I will Fail but do what is best for a Student and I can focus on being a better Teacher
A7: building individual relationships is huge, each Ss is a little different, learn what makes them each special
FQ: What one change will you make NOW instead of waiting for the start of the next school year?
Love this, but we not only need to provide encouragement & love, but skills and strategies if we have them https://t.co/WQe9Xw2Uo7
