#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
From @edutopia: Whether Ss use audio and video or pen and paper, encouraging them to take a few minutes to capture not only what they learned, but also how and why, may ultimately allow them to make deeper connections to the content https://t.co/3upjF7uXpu#EdChat#IdeaShare#K12
Please refrain from using the #Edchat hashtag during the hour of 7 - 8 PM eastern it slows down the chat. If you are in the chat you need to use it on every tweet. Thanks!
“The reality, he said, is that many schools purchase off-the-shelf software and call it "personalized learning," without being able to say what is supposed to change in the classroom." https://t.co/0XhieSol9L#edchat via @EducationWeek
Hi! Yes! Here is tonight's topic: Is the coaching model for professional development an effective model? Is there a groundswell movement to support it? #Edchat
Also, I would say it requires the coach to know exactly what coaching involves. Just taking a veteran teacher and sticking him/her in that position does not a coach make. #edchat
IDK if the whole school does. We have a retired teacher who works with all of the people in our teaching cohort. I know her coaching of me has been absolutely invaluable. #edchat
Yes we have a math coach and lit coach, neither of which have students. They deliver us with PD and PLCs. Are they effective, though? It depends on your definition of effective. #edchat
Lit coach - she has helped me effectively regroup my kids for their personal needs. However, I do think that coaches are so distanced from the classroom that they don’t understand that not all “research based” practices are actually effective for all students. #edchat
However my lit coach has been a huge help to me in my teaching & has been a motivator. My lit scores show that her guidance and my teaching are effective. #edchat
I would almost say that if someone just is familiar with research, they are not a coach. You cannot learn how to ski or swim by researching it, you have to actually DO it. #edchat
Math coach has been effective in providing me with opportunities to observe other teachers. I do feel like my concerns aren’t used to make any kind of change. It feels like the coaches keep us even further from admin, even less able to make change in the district. #edchat
Kia from MO here while supervising 3rd grade homework lol I think there is DEFINITE merit to coaching for PD...and not just because I am a teacher coach with @KCTRes I believe in it as a practice when it is done correctly it can lead to TREMENDOUS teacher growth #edchat
we have a reading and math coach, they are handled different than tech coaches ... they attend a lot of district meetings and have created a pretty cool data wall ... good source of information, but stretched in many directions
#edchat
Colleges and universities compete for top rankings and top students. What makes a school stand out? Dr. Robert Massa of Drew University attributes his school's success to strong on-campus support systems: https://t.co/kVvq2nQS2o@bobmassa#HigherEd#EdChat#Education
Keen insight about proximity of coaches to classrooms realities... @kaitannettep@teachermike72 and @sgthomas1973 In such cases I wonder if the 'commitment' to coaching model is sufficient for it to have much impact. Thoughts? #edchat

My official role does not include 'coaching' but teachers come daily for 'support, professional discussion brainstorming advice ...etc' so that is 'coaching from the classroom' #buildingconfidenceinothers#edchat
I taught in SEVERAL districts like this and did not realize how ineffective mass sit& get PD was until I became a coach one would think we would double down on teacher coaching but too few know to do it so admin sees it as a nice to have not need to have #edchat
I need guidance and support with an often-changing curriculum, as I support 5 grade levels of EL Ss, and it can be impossible for me to keep up w/changes. #Edchat
Update #edchat Why Teens Find Stories About The End Of The World So Appealing - Dystopian novels are all about consequences, choices and grey areas. And psychologists say that plays right into the sweet spot of the developing teenage brain. [[ This is... https://t.co/dU4NcGBBZH
everyone gets access ... they just get a different laptop or tablet ... it wasn't worth my time to jump through their hoops ... I coach anyway. #edchat
I think that the current model of professional development that uses a 'coaching approach'... is too losey goosey to have much impact on overall performance of teachers, students, schools etc.. Fortunately this is an alterable circumstance. Your thoughts please? #edchat
I would say it's too vaguely defined and either malstaffed or understaffed. Someone who is just familiar with educational research and is not a teaching veteran is worse than no coach at all. #edchat

#k12 complicated - “coaches” promoted by ambitions to get out of the classroom create hierarchies of “positional authority” while deep rooted “pedagogical authority” gets diminished - we should learn from from #newliteracies distributed cognition & collective intelligence #edchat

That must be tough! We have county/district coaches, but we also have in-house math and instructional coaches. Can't imagine only having Cs who support multiple schools. #Edchat
Teachers who want to get out of the classroom should get out of both the classroom and the profession. Sorry, but teachers should TEACH, not be academics about educational theory. Just my $0.02. $#edchat
It's my turn to host #masterychat this Thursday at 8pm est! If you survive these last few days with students, we'd love to have you join us. Lots of ideas and discussion of great #edtech integration coming your way. #pln#edchat#teachbetter
It is ok. My Principal doesn't care that I don't have the "coach" title ... i am able to preach the edtech gospel from any corner at my school ... and sometimes I get to hold edtech revivals #edchat
Coaching model of delivering professional development... has lots of potential seldom applied with sufficient fidelity and resources to make much of a difference. What to do? @teachermike72@engagestudents#edchat
Sometimes coaches arent good at guiding and helping adults..may be great Ts but not great adult Ts..other times Ts are resistant to change and feel threatened by coach or anyone. #edchat
Our PD is nothing like what I have been reading here. We have an agenda set the 1st day of in-service to start the year on what will happen every week in PD. We are all coaches visiting other classrooms all year & more! #edchat
yeah, and I think it diminishes the profession of teaching where status of “getting out of the classroom” is a goal, teacher learning teams with authentic collaborative time, not meetings to run through the logistics of school, create teachers as researchers, designers #edchat

Commit to the model or don't. If you want good coaches, pick the right people and she that you value their time. Or don't have the model and support Ts some other way. #edchat
My thought here would be what about teachers who are great classroom teachers and want to help others be great as well? I have met several who do not want to be a principal but still have a passion for school leadership. Coaching for them imho #edchat now if the T is terrible...
Teachers who want to get out of the classroom should get out of both the classroom and the profession. Sorry, but teachers should TEACH, not be academics about educational theory. Just my $0.02. $#edchat
When you phrase it that way, then yes, they should indeed move to where they can help others. Just "getting out of the classroom" sounded like escapism :) #edchat
honestly ... i think when something hits the mainstream it is no longer innovative. Remember when Smartboards were revolutionary ... until everyone had one and they had a large library of lessons. lost innovation #edchat

You will never convince me that process is more important than people. Without the investment, trust, and belief in the people, even the greatest processes are doomed to fail. #edchat
IDK if you can compare coaching models of teaching with something as static as a smartboard...one can have all the creativity in the world, the other is only as good as what people put into (onto?) it. #edchat

maybe, but i question its effectiveness ... just like me learning to play the banjo from a book or YouTube ... is that as effective as me jamming with a real person? #edchat
what if no one ever stopped teaching? - meaning that in any given institution of learning everyone from admin, coaching specialists, staff, parents -> all wear the hat of teacher - everyone observes everyone, everyone teaches #edchat

So if coaching model not being accepted... is it time to reject the approach, refine it, continue as is? Perhaps the problem isn't the model, but the packaging, imlememhtation, etc. #edchat@teachermike72@innejf
When I began teaching, a professor from another discipline began mentoring me -- how to be an effective professional, how to manage my career, how to navigate higher ed. Wasn't part of an official program but a coach nonetheless. Was invaluable for me! #Edchat

Ts that want to get out of the classroom want that for a myriad of reasons. We need to think of Ed as a continuum of roles that contribute to student learning boxing Ts into T or admin alone instead of creating opportunities for growth into MANY roles is how we lose ppl #edchat

Who better to "coach" than the staff you work with. We are starting to move from the formal evaluation system because it doesn't provide a real assessment of teaching abilities! #EdChat
Our instructional coach is pulled in so many different directions, I don't think she can be in classrooms every day: "You don't have a classroom--go do this" "cover that" "do this thing" #Edchat

I love the idea, but then the question becomes more about time. In my school we don't even have time to drop what we're doing to go observe one another. Too many kids, too little time. #edchat

not saying it is bad ... just saying when you have a district with 9000 teachers and you standardize the coaching from above you lose all sense of innovation. Follow the policy using these tools district bought #edchat
teacher learning teams, EdCamps, portfolios, a system of critique and reflection that would make same ol’ same ol’ every year glaringly obvious, & continued PD, masters and extended studies FREE OF CHARGE! Teachers are underpaid, the benefit should be lifelong study #edchat
truth ... I am big on the power of teacher conversation/sharing as an integral part of Professional Development. We are doing a #TLAP book study, but is geared more as a primer for teachers to do and then share with the group. #edchat
At my institution we have a coaching program called Step Up where professors are paired with Ss for a semester. Regular meetings where Ss talk about everything and anything. The coach is there to help student be successful! Data shows that Ss perform better when coached. #Edchat
Unfortunately you are right, Mike! I work in a small IA district the gives us the opportunity to do it but it can be done on a smaller scale in large districts. #EdChat

hence the basic problem in the industrialized Prussian model we still maintain, way too much emphasis put on admin, turn schools upside down, students - teachers - admin in that order. Our whole criteria of accountability is based on a strict hierarchies #edchat

I would like BOTH! It would truly be 360 observation. It should be continuous feedback on performance from Ss, admin, fellow Ts, and parents too! #edchat
I have to say — coaching has been the MOST impactful professional learning I have ever offered. Meaningful coaching is about relationships, about growth, about professional honesty and personal motivation. It’s about the coach helping a professional to grow! #edchat
