Hi Tim! Hope you've had a great Monday! always makes it better.
A1. It puts the learning goals and achievements back into the Ss hands. Giving hem ownership of their learning.
A1: Student invested in their own goals, feel empowered to chase their own goals
What a fabulous group of educators tonight!
A1. Putting students in charge of their learning builds that reflection on what they are learning to further their growth
A1 Ss are accountable for their learning throughout the whole school year
A1: SLC allow for greater S reflection & ownership of the conference itself. Learning goals are in Ss hands!
A1: Students taking ownership in their learning
Helloooo, ! So happy to be here with you tonight talking student led conferences w/! A HUGE reason to !
A1: Ss are able to reflect on learning and participation Majority of students are honest about their academic & social progress
Q1 students are more accountable!
Awesome answer! https://t.co/raXmkIgXXk
A1: Student invested in their own goals, feel empowered to chase their own goals
A1: Ss are proud to show what they have accomplished and where they are headed in their learning journey.
A1 SLC can allow Ss to share their voice to show their goals, their progress & their learning in an authentic environment
A1: Helps them learn to articulate their learning to others
A1: Ss are in charge of showing off their learning and to know what they’ve learned. Makes them responsible for their learning.
A1: I haven't done SLC yet, but love that it helps students self reflect and work on their growth mindset.
A1) Student own their grades in a SLC. They have to explain WHY and HOW... Its on them, not us... (usually)
A1 who better to show their learning and success than the Ss themselves - authentic, relevant & meaningful learning
A1 it helps to create accountability and pride which Spurs learning and success.
A1: SLCs gives the Ss ownership of their learning and a time to showcase their success.
A1: puts students in charge of their learning. Also can provide students confidence with their learning.
SLC give Ss the opp to discover their strengths and areas for improvement through self reflection
Good evening..Tracy PSU/College of Ed
Deb fifth grade teacher in De Soto. Jumping in late.
A1: It holds the S responsible for their work. It allows the S to show leadership skills.
Any mystery Skypers? It would be fun to do a Kansas one
Q1 - ownership of 1's own learning, real 21st skills, creating an individual plan/team of support, critical reflection, & more
A1 also allows families the opportunities to see their Ss in action & gives them a glimpse into the learning at school
Hi!Janie Hachen 2nd Grade Andover,Ks. Coming in late.
A1: Late tonight. Eric from Frontenac Student led conference lets students tell parents up front how they are going to improve!
A1 the students are building a reflective portfolio!
Yes, for sure! This is an important opportunity for Ps and Ss. https://t.co/sE0VLDtxTc
A1 also allows families the opportunities to see their Ss in action & gives them a glimpse into the learning at school
Ss become more invested in their learning and develop a deeper understanding of how to become a life long learner
A1: Accountability for students. They are the ones who must explain the ups and downs of their progress.
A1: I want the students to have ownership in this.
I have started at 6th gr voxer group. may have mentioned it to you?
Shatlyn ellinwood 2nd grade teacher 1:1 iPads! Late, but happy to be here!
A1-When Ss are invested they up their game. When Ss know you trust them w/the responsibility improves self esteem.
A1: Provides Ss opportunities to be courageous learners/leaders!
A1: Haven't done SLC as a T...have on the parent side & it made me proud to see my child explain what she learned...
A1: Hoping to get admin on board to encourage students to advocate for themselves, learn to set & achieve their own goals.
Allows students to show their progress and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
absolutely... SLC allow Ps the opportunity to see what their child is capable of doing at school
Oh, unique experience! Did you love it as a P?? https://t.co/0XeZs2NvXC
A1: Haven't done SLC as a T...have on the parent side & it made me proud to see my child explain what she learned...
A1. SLCs give leader voice to Ss. They lead out the convo and share their "insight".
Teachers benefit from SLC too. We gain insight into Ss thinking; can assist them in a more targeted way.
A1. Students serve as the facilitator.
BOOM! https://t.co/PUJ8WLoU5N
Teachers benefit from SLC too. We gain insight into Ss thinking; can assist them in a more targeted way.
A1: I like SLC because the Ss feel listened to + are more interactive/inspired/energetic than if T or P talking down w/o input
great to have you joining in!
A2 looking forward to seeing the responses to this Q!
.Gina Miller-Andover MS coming in late. A1)Ss gain confidence in being able to be the expert and share with mom/dad about progress
Allows P's to see child in different light. Sometimes hard for P's to let go and encourage more independence... But worth it!
A2 Enjoy seeing SLC where Ss teach the Ps so they are an active part of the conf. Higher level of understanding when one can teach
A1: I love that Ss explain what they've been learning. Opens up great conversations between Ps, Ts, and Ss
I'm the beginning we have to help parents transition to this format and learn to listen!
meet , principal and champion of and Community-Family Engagement. He's awesome!… https://t.co/xfwdmZpLm1
A1. SLCs give leader voice to Ss. They lead out the convo and share their "insight".
A2: Placing the S in charge the Ps get to have a learning conversation directly with the S. Ps get to join in on the goal setting.
Can someone tell me the subject of the chat?
Ss can become the teacher and "teach" parents about topic. Ss feel empowered and take ownership of learning.
Each S creates a reflection slide show to share w/ Ps. Ss and Ps create goals together as well. https://t.co/EkpnRDrDPR
A2: this is interesting question. It can help parents see their kid(s) in new light.
Student led conferences (SLC)
A2: SLC opens the conversation btw parent and child. My Ss share things on iPad and around the room.
A2: students are excited about sharing with their parents and encourage parents to attend. Ss can share a portfolio of work
Thinking of using showbie to help with the sharing this year.
A2. Parents ask the Qs. Parents new to SLCs need info on how to participate so that they are successful.
Didn't even realize the Ps would have to talk directly with the Ss discuss!
A2 when Ss & Ps can set goals for the next few weeks/months together, demonstrates the power of home/school learning
I encourage Ss to attend. Ss write to Ps explaining their glows/grows from the qtr. Ss read letter to P.
A2: I think it's eye opening for Ps to see their Ss in this setting; authentic work, how they interact w classmates, etc.
A1: Tim White, Kanawha County School, WV ... SLC's simply showcases the learning. Enough T talk, let the S's Show their learning
A2: I think it's important to encourage parents to ASK their child questions during SLC!
A2: My Ss read their "script" & ask "Do you have any questions?" at end. GREAT discussion then happens between S, P, & T!!
Love the "glows/grows" through the letter. https://t.co/Au4JRFWOWC
I encourage Ss to attend. Ss write to Ps explaining their glows/grows from the qtr. Ss read letter to P.
A2: SLC help with Ps and Ss conversation about the Ss school experiences. That topic can be hard to get conversations at home.
A2-Ss have a prepared presentation we/work samples & future academic/personal goals. I'm w/them & serve as their assistant.
Do They encourage Parent Involvement? I see that they are more apt to ask questions. We have students create PPT with slides
Definitely! A conference should be interactive, engaging and reflective
A2. Would it be helpful to have prompts or questions printed to aid Ps during SLCs?
A2: Makes parents proud of kids, makes them seem more grown up and like a leader. kid responsible for their behavior not parent
Thanks for welcoming me! I spent some time in KS this summer & really loved it, too! :)
A2. assist Parents in focusing on their Ss conversation and work samples. And support goal setting is their child
A2: This year I will show Ss writing from beginning to end. It shows growth in the S. Everyone ❤️ to see change.
Student flowchart to follow.
A2: I'm interested in hearing more ideas from others.
A2: I love to have one tech project that the Ss show to their Ps. I also have a survey they fill out to talk over about class
Side question.
How long to your SLC's take? At one edcamp I attended the facilitator said it took over an hour for each child.
My students use as their platform for sharing.
Is anyone out there using Seesaw for SLC?
Do you have some strategies/tips to encourage the Ps to start asking the questions? https://t.co/raJQmof62G
A2: I think it's important to encourage parents to ASK their child questions during SLC!
Wowza! About 10-15 minutes for me! https://t.co/5yW7C1rkok
Side question.
How long to your SLC's take? At one edcamp I attended the facilitator said it took over an hour for each child.
I ❤️the making goals together!
A2: P's come see what they do not understand, we have had P's come to the classroom and the S's teach P's as if they were the S's
A2: I don't do SLC, but Ss write letters to Ps explaining glows/grows from the qtr. They also include ways Ps can help them.
A2: I want students to pick what to show Parents and I think it will be fun watching them interact with each other.
A2: SLCs can help get parents in the door. For some, talking to their child is less intimidating than talking to a teacher.
Do you give parents suggestions ahead of time? How do you prep s for answering those questions?
Ive been doing SLC since 2008. Was very skeptical at first, but fell in love! I organize it, but Ss take the lead!
Do you have them make a folder in seesaw or just click on their name to see the feed?
At each station I have a couple of possible ?s Ps might ask Ss to encourage positive, productive conversation.
A2 student flowchart for them to follow. Parent questions going home before conferences.
This is extremely effective, the conversation shows the blended learning https://t.co/VBra8FcLr7
A2: SLC opens the conversation btw parent and child. My Ss share things on iPad and around the room.
I think 15 minutes is sufficient. Students should be prepared before conference. Just my opinion. https://t.co/kYV31vCrtJ
Side question.
How long to your SLC's take? At one edcamp I attended the facilitator said it took over an hour for each child.
1 part of our SLC has S's specifically ask parents to support them by .... And then ask parents for suggestions
A2. When we used SLCs we have grade levels separated. They can last 7 -10 min. Some shorter some longer.
I am planning on using seesaw this year. Haven't yet but resources look great
Awesome perspective! Great talking points!
A2: SLC allows parents to talk with their Ss in a safe environment. Both parent and Ss will only benefit from conversation.
A2...I also love that the convo becomes more between Ps and Ss and less Ts talking behind Ss back to the Ps.
We do 15. 10 w/ kid and 5 w/o https://t.co/PA9LIsWcCh
Side question.
How long to your SLC's take? At one edcamp I attended the facilitator said it took over an hour for each child.
I typically have possible ?s at each station to encourage that conversation for Ps who don't know what to ask.
We usually only do it for the spring conference.
Great convo everyone! Q3 coming soon!
A2: It is about helping everyone to connect as a team. Sharing work samples, self reflection and feeling pride.
in the past mine have taken about twenty minutes.
I really like the idea of Ss asking the parents for support! What great way to hold Ps accountable. https://t.co/BAE77oaSKt
1 part of our SLC has S's specifically ask parents to support them by .... And then ask parents for suggestions
these short conferences are making me jealous
SLC also open up a great opp for Ss to develop speaking skills! love it!
20 min--same here, Rochele. :)
A2: Ps get to see their children's work, from both their Cs and Ts perspective. C are excited + proud to show their P their work
A2: I usually give S an outline that they complete and practice with then they stay on track when sharing with Ps
Whoa! Would definitely need to trim that! Ts would be conferencing for days.
I allow several Ss/Ps at once. Its powerful for Ps to see how their kiddos interact w other Ss.
A3 some Ts use a flowchart for the Ss to follow, other Ts have a checklist. Importance is on the conversations & learning
I tell Ps to plan for at least 30 min but they can stay longer. I have several groups in my room at once.
Ss add items from diff content area to SLC folder in . Ss then share from there. They an choose what to share.
A3. I've used some evaluation sheets before but tonight has inspired me to do a slide presentation! I'm thinking !
Have used SLC in previous MS, but working to implement in current HS. Would love any and all ideas/tips!
A3: I had a form kids filled out before. Also a form I filled out with strengths & weaknesses and had parents fill out the same
YES!! It's the perfect tool for this, isn't it?!
A3 I like the idea of giving students an outline. Encouraging/helping students to create a smart goal should be a key component
A3: Build a S team to prepare, then have each class decide what they would like to share, then share a choice menu for P's
Could you share the flow chart?
A3: we then used teacher and parent feedback to create smart goals for next quarter, illustrated them, & hung for daily viewing
A3: Use a digital portfolio which 6th graders store work samples, have practice math problems to do w parents, & showcase growth.
A3 our Ss "practice" with their buddy classrooms. Provides authentic learning for both Ss
A3: I have some work examples in a folder with check list for students stalpled there. Also we have a writing display in hall.
A3-Ss have had slides, a set of talking points. Looking to make more interactive this year.
A3: At the MS level ours were done w/ seminar T who acted as an advocate for the Ss. Pulled up grades & had Ss explain each class
Absolutely! My experience is in 1st but very do-able with all students!
Ditto, Ericka, 2nd grade https://t.co/sEnOAUNu3F
Ss add items from diff content area to SLC folder in . Ss then share from there. They an choose what to share.
A3: I have a sheet my Ss fill out. How I am doing, how can I do better, etc. Then show examples!
A3: show examples of student work, what Ss needs to improve, goals, how to reach those goals.
Love these!!! Seesaw is a great portfolio too!!
What have you used for your digital portfolio tool?
A3 1st yr doing this, but they have binders with their work. I am still looking for ideas and easy forms for both Ss and Ps.
Love this idea. https://t.co/mcmfBLm0s1
A3 our Ss "practice" with their buddy classrooms. Provides authentic learning for both Ss
15-20 min with core Ts dropping by for 2-3 mins. 3-4 conf going on in 2 rooms. Ss usually cover everything & I just add my views
I like that idea, they pick what to show parents
SLC is organized in a PPT. Has grades for each subject and Ss discuss how they got it, what they want to improve and a goal
A3: little page w/ what S has been doing well, something S needs to work on, something S needs their P's help w/ and a goal
Great idea! Many job interviews are with multiple interviewers. Good practice for Ss. https://t.co/amDiVhGoXk
I allow several Ss/Ps at once. Its powerful for Ps to see how their kiddos interact w other Ss.
Thinglink could be fun! Roll over the pictures and read snippets about the project or item posted.
I give students a checklist of what to add to folder, then they use another checklist of what to discuss at SLC
A3: SLCs have been challenging at HS; usually have advisor/seminar T facilitate w/the S & Ps but then doesn't involve other Ts?
A1,2,3 I have never had a SLC that is formal but from reading these suggestions and the use of It's a go for November
we used your self eval form today!! Thank you!!! Super interesting to see what students thought
A3: Do not do SLCs personally, but have witnessed many (paper based). Love the idea of a digital portfolio and using Seesaw!
Really would like to work on some plans to implement at HS level! https://t.co/bIFWnmDUPK
A3: SLCs have been challenging at HS; usually have advisor/seminar T facilitate w/the S & Ps but then doesn't involve other Ts?
A3: I have a script that I am going to change up and I want them to share goals and ask their parents to share goals.
A3: have students fill out a reflection forum. It depends on the class and example. Have done a few students led IEPs.
A3: ppt template that I revised from https://t.co/tYsoiFEKsd 5 yrs ago after my daughter lead her IEP as a Soph using it
we used to have ours set up that way. We then put the last day for Ps to go to individual Ts for conferences.
I also want them to share how flexible seating has influenced learning.
A3 our 5th Grade Ts send a google form home to their Ps prior to SLC & then use their responses to drive their SLCs using nearpod
A3: The SLC stations are centers we do, then Ss choose writing pieces & books to read to Ps. Don't make it too hard for yourself!
Moving quickly! Q4 coming soon!
We give time in classes to complete ppt & practice. then in spring add reflection slides and changes to fall ones
Brian Quick, Shawnee Mission...sorry I am late!
Here is the forum that I've used in the past. An former coteachers make it for a class we co-taught https://t.co/1WfIaHLO3s
A3 never had SLC's but many students attend. Toying with the idea of conference prep/extra credit, sentence frames
I wonder if school-wide conference format (stu-led) would help--same no matter what T you saw.
I did a SLC today and one challenge to overcome is having Ss speak openly....some get shy. Will try script format to help
Love SLC. Get the student's perspective on their abilities, let them offer plans to continue to improve and move forward.
My brain is getting full tonight! Keep the resources coming everyone! I think I may try SLC's in a few weeks!
Thanks since they do stations do you have multiple families in at one time? https://t.co/oIQcmhtXJl
A3: Here is an ex of the letter Ps & Ss received when they come. Each station has a sign w instructions & Ss lead P… https://t.co/aGkLOMC0PM
kicking off in about 20 minutes. https://t.co/zLTTnAm7Gi
Let's explore digital citizenship strategy tonight @ 9:00.
A3: To start, am thinking about giving a guide sheet to share with Ts, Ss, & parents ahead of time to promote good conversations.
HI Brian! Always great to see you!
A4: Strengths, weaknesses, goals, how the teacher can help, how the parent can help, what they've learned
A4: their perspective of how things our going in class: behavior, attitude, mindset, effort level, etc
A4 they give information from the report they fill out. I let them know I am going to give input as we go through the SLC
Q4: loving having Ss read and explain a writing piece during SLC
A4: All their accomplishments! I try to stay away from neg. unless absolutely necessary.
A4: we share a bit from every subject. Work they are proud of, our blog, reflections, and things on iPad.
A4: S's should discuss learning, to much prep makes it a scripted event, Discuss, Class Culture, Blended Learning, Flex Env.
i like this--kids creating preso for SLC, adding/revising in spring!! https://t.co/ZAZGWasw1G
We give time in classes to complete ppt & practice. then in spring add reflection slides and changes to fall ones
A3 What about having a discussion around what the student is passionate about during the school day? … https://t.co/wfjAcVRDf0
A4: Adding in if they are doing well in class, how can they further their learning. Where do they go next?
A3. Grade level four core content Ts grouped together for content SLCs. electives in cafe/classrooms for add'l conf time.
I think I called it "areas to grow in" something like that, depending on how you word it I think it goes over better
My students will practice scripts with their buddy 4th grade class this year.
Q4--- grades last if at all, reflect on strengths, challenges, study habits, social skills, extra curric goals short & long term
A4: misunderstood question 3. This is my answer for question 4. https://t.co/nGc2qBkcol
A3: show examples of student work, what Ss needs to improve, goals, how to reach those goals.
A4 have loved seeing a choice board where Ss get the opportunity to choose what to share their learning
A4: Ss share testing data, grades, assignment examples, & glows/grow. T shares addl info at the end and helps answer Qs.
Have the S's share the doing with P's. Have the S's put the P's through one of the lessons they have completed in class.
We start the convo of what do u love and what will u do later on and begin talking about the future https://t.co/NfmtA5lX8d
YES! I can just see it. Makes me smile.
A4: What we're learning, personal goals, self-reflection on behavior.
A4: differs for each class but some show tech projects, some demonstrate skills, others teach Ps what they know
A4: Proud moment, learning moment, best part of school moment, something they want to learn, goals, and reflections of learning
For SLC's give the parents a choice board also.. https://t.co/7ACcZyH9GS
A4 have loved seeing a choice board where Ss get the opportunity to choose what to share their learning
... If focus on prev noted things grades will come. Conver much deeper without grade as main focus. Focus is S and future success
Do tell them I was looking at the pictures of their learning. AWESOME!
So I have 320 students, anyone else do SLCs with lots of kids and have tips?
Well I see why!! :) Hi Janie!
A4: Also thinking of having Ss share a writing piece and their Back to School Buddies Buncee.
Yep! I love that Ps see how Ss interact w other Ss & it's a huge time saver. Allows me to back away & let Ss lead
can you do SLC in groups where you have multiple Ss in the room at a time?
A4: More questions arise. Should they share only academic goals or incorporate behavior for littles or career for HS?
A4. Artifacts from their performance portfolio. Some contents have outline for Ss to use.
Great convo at the HS level. We want to work in Ind Plans of Study with the Ss and their future plans. https://t.co/Z2G55N1B1x
A4 Students share their passions. Leads to conversations with parents and teacher about why they love it. Start of… https://t.co/X9vW2f2KkY
A4: A discussion with S can maybe help determine priority list for sharing with P (depending on age)
A4 They'll share strengths, reading and math scores, projects. goals, areas to improve, what they love about learning and yets
I like this idea for reflecting! https://t.co/KsEkL4HfLR
Maybe the students can make a video for their parents that they can share.
I like the idea of incorporating future career ideas for HS students
We include all of it. It's fun to see 5th grade career, academic, and personal goals. https://t.co/hNl0m9FvWl
A4: More questions arise. Should they share only academic goals or incorporate behavior for littles or career for HS?
My Ss also post a kind message in for parents. "Thanks for all you do" etc. https://t.co/fhrxsmaM2z
Maybe the students can make a video for their parents that they can share.
A4: Demonstrate lrng thru centers, , self reflection. It's a mini snapshot of our day w Ss telling what they did & learned.
I frequently have multiple Ss in room at one time. We don’t schedule times. The beauty of SLC!
Last Q happening soon! Where does the hour go?!
A4; As we integrate the KSBE goal of IPS I think academic, employability, and emotional content will surface
Creative work showing mastery of a standard is an awesome share out! https://t.co/tPs1CkZLBk
Maybe the students can make a video for their parents that they can share.
Great idea! Nice to show caring to Ps. Hope it shows a good return to Ss!
could you have the kids do virtual SLC?
Yes... You just go with the flow! https://t.co/n4btTpeVAW
I frequently have multiple Ss in room at one time. We don’t schedule times. The beauty of SLC!
Do you even have them pick the day or just free for all anytime?
You, acting as a connected creator-educator, benefit your kids SO MUCH! Rock on! https://t.co/cdIbWB4cPc
A great example of why I love collaborating and connecting on here! My kiddos get support from so many people… https://t.co/yLKu6AGCiV
A5. Making sure parents and teachers voices are part of the conference.
A5: Have the Ss practice! For many of my Ss, it's the first time they've been asked to come to their conference. They're nervous.
A5: come prepared for the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Yes! I would have to agree! https://t.co/OzxaIw1h41
A5: Have the Ss practice! For many of my Ss, it's the first time they've been asked to come to their conference. They're nervous.
I also have a self evaluation that is helpful. I like to include lots of writing samples.
Agree Agree!! Have a great rest of the week!
A5: Ss make personalized invitation inviting parents to join in an evening of learning. Parents feel welcome, Ss gain ownership
A5 Know that not all PTs & Ss will show up, but there is something to be said for the students reflecting
A5: keep the amount of positives high and keep the amount of negatives low and specific.
A5: The last few yrs, I've called all 12th gr Ps to remind/invite them to their big kids' confs. Helped turnout!
nope they just come at a time convenient. I make rounds for a few minutes to answer questions they have for me.
A5 realize the conf is about the Ss - it might not go exactly as the Ts planned & that is OK. Show Ss strengths & areas for growth
A5-Laugh w/your Ss/families at SLC. Show that you truly enjoy them and what you've all accomplished together.
A5: Don't focus on failures, but look for solutions to encourage growth. Let Ss play a part in that convo.
A5: I love a simple Plus Minus Delta... What do you like, don't like, and what would you change. Simple and to the point!
Be sure to let the S's have voice in every aspect. P's become the learners. T's enjoy trusting your S's to have control
I always set them up for 2 days, open ended time like noon-3:30. They could come whenever.
I think giving the Ss something to guide them. Even though we go over what to do they forget when they get in there with Ps.
A5: Keep it inviting and friendly! This should be more like a celebration of the whole kid and not just numbers and info!
A5 -- hype it up as a celebration w/student as star. Email, text, postcards, robocalls, ... We get @ least 90% show rate
