I’m Jennifer D. Klein, author of @globaledguide and Head of School at Gimnasio Los Caobos in Bogotá, Colombia. I asked a couple of students to join if they could, as they’re working on some amazing #climatechange projects. Fingers crossed they come! #globaledchat

A1: Near #Seattle: More fires, hotter temps, water shortages in the summer; more extreme storms rather than the perpetual drizzle in the winter. #GlobalEdChat
A1: This is hard for me to comment on in terms of Bogotá, since I don’t have the history here to be able to say how it’s changed. Folks say there’s a lot more rain and landslides last year were devastating in several parts of the country. #globaledchat
A1. #globaledchat, earthquakes via fracking. Oklahoma had the most in the world at one point recently.
Andre Daughty (pronounced Daugh like how) from Oklahoma City joining in again tonight.

A2: Everything! Jobs for instance: I saw an article today saying that in 30 states, clean energy jobs are outpacing fossil fuel jobs in the US. China is focusing on creating 13 million clean energy jobs by 2020: https://t.co/IBLRlNr0Ow#Globaledchat

A2: I’d say almost all of them. In particular, climate change exacerbates poverty by hurting local livelihoods like traditional farming or hunting practices. I loved @goproject ’s piece on the impact low salmon population was having on indigenous peoples up north. #GlobalEdChat
A2 Continued: I also think climate change impacts regional conflict because it creates the fight for resources and land. Politics in Israel/Palestine and water scarcity issues are politically entwined, for example, and with them agricultural (in)dependence. #GlobalEdChat
A2 We talk about food security issues driving conflict around the globe. #drought conditions have led to many of the conflicts in the middle east and North Africa. #Globaledchat
I’m going to #Ghana in April with @ablfk_ghana and will see first hand some of these effects. I’m also amazed that more isn’t being talked about with Cape Town running out of water! #GlobalEdChathttps://t.co/oIqAaYSPRa
“I declare the global social space we are building to be naturally independent of the tyrannies you seek to impose on us. You have no moral right to rule...”
— John Perry Barlow, 1947-2018
Our comrade has died.
His vision lives on!

Absolutely. When I taught Social Studies I taught about children’s rights and I have a 10 year old daughter so this really struck me. It’s amazing how many of these issues are tied together. #GlobalEdChat
A3 Changes in the Arctic are the most notable and easy to visualize. Melting permafrost and disappearing coastlines! @goproject has great lesson on Native Cultures and climate change. #GlobalEdChat

Q4: SDG#13 is to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. What projects have you implemented in the classroom? Any research or solutions-based examples to share? #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
This is terrifying, Ken. The amount of uninhabitable desert is incredible. I’ve seen Peruvian elders and scientists talk about what this map shows, that the end of the glaciers will be the end of human existence in much of the Andean region. #globaledchat
That's a good one. A lot of African countries appear to be experiencing extreme levels of drought and other climate-related events. It's interesting to consider the links between environmental + social + economic #globaledchat
“The time is past when humankind thought it could selfishly draw on exhaustible resources. We know now the world is not a commodity.” - Francois Holland #GlobalEdChat
A4 I'm not in K12 classroom anymore, but our organization (C-GEO) has this free Atlas of Oregon Climate & Climate Change for Ts to use towards taking action on the topic https://t.co/3Lch0Bcpot#globaledchat
A4. Many of the projects are to just expose Ss to a world outside of USA. Help them see the light. Many aren't exposed to anything outside of their neighborhoods. #globaledchat
A4: @cgeducation invited Gimnasio Los Caobos to join the #IPCC#globalencounters! Students are collaborating online (live and asynchronously) to share #globaled perspectives on climate change. Two students and one teacher will represent Colombia in Edmonton soon. #globaledchat

I know. So sad! Speaking of that part of world, I was in Atacama Desert last summer & locals were talking about the devastating impacts climate change is already having there #globaledchat
My daughter is just happy because now she won’t miss the last day of school for her uncle’s wedding! Positive of adding a day at the end? #globaledchat
A5: Teaching my son about conservation through actions at home and talking about global issues (like Cape Town right now). We also volunteer at a place that takes food from stores/restaurants that would be wasted and distributes it to families in need. #globaledchat

A5 recyclye, use hydroflask to cut down on using plastic bottles for water, support community organizations, educate child about these issues & share why important #globaledchat
Jumping in super late from NYC where I am recruiting Ts to come to Mexico City next year. Couldn’t miss the chance to spend a few w/ the good folks of #Globaledchat

A5: Our 2nd grade students in Colombia are developing a nature reserve on campus to help local and migrating wildlife get what they need—all inspired by finding dead birds on campus who had found no food in flight during their migrations. #GlobalEdChat
A5: starting to work with @GlobalIssuesNet to focus Ss attention on a variety of issues that impact the future of our planet. Check out the work they are doing all over the globe! #Globaledchat
A6 For K12 classrooms the greatest challenges I frequently hear (& remember from when was in classroom) are time, testing, & lack of resources #globaledchat
So so so much learning today...need to re look and review a lot of things that we do. Must begin with creating awareness first of all . happy I joined in #Globaledchat
A5: The students from Bogota we are applying the system of recycling in our homes and so we are looking forward to building moss walls in our homes. @jdeborahklein
I think as long as you are presenting facts and sharing what is happening in places around the world, then you can allow kids to come to their own conclusions without seeming biased? #GlobalEdChat
one thing can do is start small & incorporate data & make it visual through primary sources, using photographs, of places that show how environment in a locale is changing over years (i.e. glaciers, how certain flora has migrated northward/southward over years) #globaledchat

A7: I love to see what the students come up with when given a question about the impacts of climate change. No specific resources but giving them the power to research and share. #Globaledchat
I agree. We can help pepper in a few here and there, but inquiry is most powerful in any subject—and learning more engaging—when students own the research and share what they learn with their peers, collaborate toward solutions, and provide a meaningful audience. #GlobalEdChat
