The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
I'm Kathy one of the moderators of #educoach. I work with teacher leaders, coaches and administrators so they can SHINE. This week I've been working on new offerings. Watch https://t.co/qEvAPxtCYL for details later this summer.
I've also been doing some home project this week while I had some time off. Today - painting and weeding. Sitting on the deck enjoying the evening - my self-care. #educoach
Good evening! Kristi from MO, K-4 Instructional Facilitator. My #eduwin was delivering our new ELA curr to T. We created thinking strategy UOS and de-prioritized standards so we could spend time on what's most important AND wrote a solid front matter. They loved it! #educoach
Hopeing more #educoach friends find us tonight...
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: YOU! Let’s dive into our own self-care! We can’t pour from an empty cup! We need to take care of ourselves first! #educoach
A1: Agree- we have to be able to take care of ourselves before we can care for and support those around us. @teachergoals shared this tweet the other day and speaks truth! #educoach
If we try to be everything to everyone, and try to make things better for everyone to the neglect of ourselves, we aren't using our time and energy wisely. #educoach
A1: I think it all comes back to the saying that we cannot pour from an empty cup. It is not selfish, because we cannot be our best for T and S if we are not our best self, and being our best self requires making time to sharpen the saw. #educoach
A1: @jpkillion would say that every time you say yes to something, you’re saying no to something else. Making sure you always keep in mind your bigger goals so you can feel accomplished and fulfilled #educoach

A2: I work at a #LeaderInMe school and an expectation is that staff live the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Habit 7 is Sharpen the Saw "Balance is best". Taking care of mind, body and soul. This is self care, and a necessary habit for a happy and effective life. #educoach
I love the #LeaderInMe. It was something I always wanted to do in a school. I work for an outside education agency - so harder to implement. Loved the book. #educoach
A3: I try to stay active by getting exercise at the Y or doing chair yoga at the local senior center. Yoga really helps us to relax, and to keep moving. #educoach
A3: I've been trying to make a more conscious effort of going out with my friends. Trying to keep a balance. We're going to Sedona this summer. #educoach
A3 One thing I do is keep a gratitude journal. It helps clear my mind. I think I'm going to start Morning Pages (found an app the other day) - another writing technique #educoach
A3: I also think it is important to LEAVE school at a decent hour to have time away from the work. Get refreshed in the evening. Start again in the morning! #educoach
Being able to watch kids live out the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a joy! We are building leaders for life! I also love that we take time to teach about self-care of the mind, body and soul via Habit #7 and that adults practice it as well. #educoach
This is so true, Nancy! There is rarely something that can't wait until tomorrow and there is always more to do, so we need to limit ourselves, and devote time to personal lives as well. #educoach
Self care can be challenging when you feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that you have on your plate. However, especially with children- self care is one the most important lessons they can learn!! #educoach#cep416
A4 Self-care can be challenging when work piles up. I also work full time and have my own consulting business - I work many evenings on my biz. I'm working on setting more self-care time - especially exercise. #educoach
I couldn’t agree more with this quote! I think that self care should be your biggest prirority! It is not selfish to care about yourself and do what is best for you! #educoach#cep416
A4: Self-care can be challenging when it isn’t made a priority and time takes over in other ways. Something that I’ve always appreciated from @jdw2679 is if time is all we have, how are we using it? Self- care needs to be part of our time. #educoach
I think the biggest way to make self care a priority is by starting to implement it in the education system as early as possible! Let the children know that taking care of themselves is their biggest responsibility! #educoach#cep416
A5. I think you have to treat self care like it’s part of your job. In my calendar I schedule going to the gym, dinner dates with my wife, and weekend plans. You can’t be your best self for Ts and Ss without maintaining balance in your life #educoach

A3: Spending time with my husband and kids, being outside, happy hour with friends reading, at-home spa nights, participating in small group and singing on worship team at church, studying my bible/devotions, unwinding with some wine and a new movie or TV series. #educoach

A5: Be aware that most of what someone learns from us comes from our actions and expressions. We need to *be* grounded, not just preach it or it’s all for naught. #educoach
A5: Figure our what works for you. Even if it means starting with small chunks of time or scheduling it as a calendar event, make it happen. Hold yourself accountable or find an accountability partner to support your self-care. #educoach
Yes - what gets scheduled gets done - both in our professional and personal lives. We wouldn't skip an important meeting at work. We owe ourselves the same respect. (Giving myself a pep talk to make this happen) #educoach
I’m mindful of being fully present while at home, especially when littles are up; however, I can be guilty of the nightly working after bedtime. I aim for no laptop nights at least a couple times a week. Have to find that balance. #educoach
A4: Everything else! I find even when I am not working, our social obligations, taking care of kids and family, errands, meal prep, being a home owner, etc. can easily monopolize my time. Self-care has to be scheduled as a big rock. #educoach
A6. Just like as teachers we invested in Ss, as coaches we need to invest in Ts. Take the time to take a teacher out for coffee outside the building. Both model and encourage healthy work/life. #educoach
A6: Lead by example! Support colleagues in finding balance and help them to recognize within themselves when they need to take a step back. We talk about looking at the whole child with students, yet self-care is part of looking at the whole adult learner as well. #educoach
Exactly. Our job isn't to stress teachers out with more work. Coaches can be the eyes and ears of a building. They see when teachers are stressed. We can't forget what it is like to be in the classroom! #educoach
A5: We have to #PutFirstThingsFirst and schedule our big rocks. Self-care is a big rock. If we plan our our most important things, everything else can fall in around it. Watch Stephen Covey demonstrate it in this video- worth your 10 minutes! #educoachhttps://t.co/luvYUf04KK
A6: I also like to taken”field trips” when possible. Walk and talk outside, do something different. Connect about our common (and beautifully flawed) humanity. #educoach
This is #LeaderInMe ! Check it out- The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, which is based off of Dr. Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. #educoach
Accountability partners are so important. That is one of the reasons I love coaching coaches. Virtual check in provide a layer of accountability with support. #educoach

A7: That’s tricky. I think as a start, we want them to know that they are deserving of care. This is a thread not an instance. Sadly, sometimes it takes quite a lot of convincing and positive examples to get this point across. Every angry thought threatens progress. #educoach
I’m going to practice self care right now by signing off, leaving my cell phone downstairs, and getting to bed before 10:00. Be well coaches! #educoach
