When I was in Middle School it was still called a Junior High School - Ramsey Junior High in Minneapolis, MN - Aretha Franklin, queen of soul, was one of my favorites! "I Say A Little Prayer for You" https://t.co/ikE2Xik4z4#BookCampPD
Hello All, Steph Dill, elementary SPED T in Colorado. Favorite song in middle school - I cannot remember. I barely remember song names now. #bookcamppd

Douglas Reeves @DouglasReeves mentioned that when we approach professional learning we should focus on “action outcomes.” It can begin with one idea that you want to implement. You will be asked to share it at the end of the chat. #BookCampPD
Missed my #BookCampPD -ers! I'm a Reading Specialist currently working with HS Ss in RI. I loved all music in HS! Words, words, words. Always so powerful! Love!
A1 My JH experience was filled w/ connecting w/ my friends the "old school" way as we didn't use the Internet. I folded notes like these and handed them off to friends all day long. Friends were key. I adored my Geography and homemaking classes. This was 50 years ago. #BookCampPD
A1: In middle school I was painfully shy, kept to myself. I moved 2 weeks before the end of 7th grade and went to a new school for 8th grade. I was an awkward child. #bookcamppd
A1. My family moved during my junior high years and I took the next 30 years trying to adapt. Moving away from my friends proved devastating. I even ran away at 15 and went back to Minneapolis as I loved my life there. #BookCampPD
A1 Middle school was good. Found my self and found the Trombone. But, I remember lots of heartache and family things. Grew up in a loving family, just a difficult time. School was a place to be me. #bookcamppd
A1: It was a mixture of positive & negative experiences in school and out. As an athlete and a student I was excelling, but socially I was awkward, self-conscious, and sometimes isolated. I liked learning in the classroom, but not other aspects of school at the time. #BookCampPD
A1: MS was not happy time for me. Awkward, bus bully, open-air classrooms, like going to school in an airport, homework was too excessive & was meaningless. Only class I liked was Spanish. Was so glad to be back in a class"room" when I got to HS. #bookcamppd
A1 MS -started a new school, made new friends. Catholic HS with lots of supportive teachers. Heavy focus on reading but reading in isolation back then. I loved learning. #BookCampPD
A1: School seemed easy during middle school, in terms of academics. I was busy with hockey, soccer, and music; I don’t remember having lots of homework. Socially boys and girls were becoming aware of each other, but I wasn’t really interested in social drama. #BookCampPD
A2. "Values describe the function of behavior, while goals describe the form. Values are ongoing where goals can be accomplished and finished. Working persistently is a value." page 7 #BookCampPD
A1: First steps towards becoming myself - lots of note passing, first dances, first boyfriend, lots of great books read, first time to fall in love with listening to my OWN music (tapes and the occasional CD)... #BookCampPD
A2. "Values are qualities of action that make like meaningful." page 6 I always had long term goals in my life and my values served me well in working toward those goals. Without sound values would the goals have been accomplished? I doubt it. #BookCampPD
Gotcha. Junior high (as it was then), frankly, was among my worst years in school. Early adolescence was difficult and I didn’t connect much with adults or peers at that age. #BookCampPD A1
A2: According to Empower, goals are finite (e.g. studying to get an 80% on a math test), but values are how we define ourselves and what is important. Connecting one’s belief system to what they do at school and at work could lead to empowerment and self-fulfillment. #BookCampPD
A2: Interesting to have students articulate their values at the start of a school year, make connections to their behavior, identify disconnects, and evaluate later. It would be a great to have students construct their personal codes to begin and see them evolve. #BookCampPD
A2 Values are those core, raw emotion things that guide your actions toward everything. The yardstick for measuring response and behavior. The spotlight on decisions and choices. #bookcamppd
Q3. The elements of Empower are: exploration, motivation, participation, openness, willingness, empathy and resilience.
Which element do you feel is going well in your school and which could be improved the most? #BookCampPD
A2 Values are those core, raw emotion things that guide your actions toward everything. The yardstick for measuring response and behavior. The spotlight on decisions and choices. #bookcamppd
A2 Values help you achieve your goals. Goal setting fr Ss so important. Who they are & what they believe helps them to make goals a reality. Helping them foster healthy relationships w Ss & Ts will strenghten core values & personal ethics = achieve their goals. #sel#BookCampPD
A2: Values are defined in Empower as something a person has control over in terms of shaping and selecting. In striving for goals there may be external factors that impact whether a #BookCampPD#booklove
A3. After spending most of my career working with at-risk students, I believe empathy (pg 97) is the most challenging. Students often have a "knee jerk" reaction to situations around them and lack the ability to view the situation from the eyes of another. #BookCampPD
A3. Perhaps the most concrete of the seven is participation. During the last decade we have made great strides in giving even the quietest voice opportunities to be heard utilizing technology. #BookCampPD
A1: I had a lot of preteen issues but at least we had recess and no cellphones in school! I can’t imagine dealing with social media and being a teen! #BookCampPD
No, I mean there were no interior walls in the building. Classes were "areas." It was just like being in an airport. Only a few book shelves here and there separated the classes. You could see what was going on in all the classes around you. #BookCampPD
A3: As a staff we read Mindset for Learning and are using the 5 stances. I'd say we are doing well within the building and our Ss with resiliency we need to work more on exploration. #bookcamppd
A3: Participation&willingness are 2 strengths of students at my school, including in my grade 9 & grade 12 classes. Younger students often demonstrate a desire to explore, a willingness to take risks, and are more open about their lives in and out of the class #BookCampPD
Q4. Chapter 9 focuses on student and adult behaviors.
How can you connect with parents to form a partnership and involve parents in this important process? #BookCampPD
A2: Off the top of my head, I would say my values are at the core of who I am - they are unchanging. But my preferences and goals change with my season of life/circumstances. #BookCampPD
A3: As a staff we read Mindset for Learning and are using the 5 stances. I'd say we are doing well within the building and our Ss with resiliency we need to work more on exploration. #bookcamppd
A3: The big challenge many students face is resilience. Is it related to social media, how kids are being raised, or who holds the power in family & academic settings? Ss find it challenging to be resilient in an interconnected world where feedback is instantaneous.
#BookCampPD
A4. Thought it was interesting that often parents have two agendas - the happiness or achievement agenda when they speak with educators. Validating the parents feelings and keep turning the conversation back to the student's values. #BookCampPD
Well, I really dislike the term "buy-in" I perfer to think they have excitment, understanding and desire. However, with that said, yes I do believe I am noticing a difference with the staff - which is coming through with our Ss also. #bookcamppd
A3: As an e-learning (online) T, with most of my Ss never seeing myself or their peers, I see Ss playing the game of school without seeing opportunity to be creative and demonstrate learning outside of the box. This may be a fault of design rather than the students. #BookCampPD
Remember that we parents are going through much of the same thing. Reach out and build relationships early, regardless of the level at school. #ptchat#BookCampPD A4

A4. Are you part of the 66% that feel stressed or anxious when a difficult conversation is upcoming? Chapter 9 is for you! Sharing and discussing chapter 9 with your team would be fantastic! SO many great resources in this chapter!! #BookCampPD
A4 Communicate... often. Meet discuss and show your care for the student. Share ideas and make sure to share the #WINS Parents love to hear the great things when the phone rings.

A4. Any principals in tonight's chat? This quote from "The Principled Principal" about communication is spot on. As mentioned in "Empower your Students," allow the parent to share their values .." and offers key questions you can ask (p. 154) #BookCampPD
A4: The first step is to communicate with parents at the beginning of the school year, to make a positive connection without discussing an individual student’s academic progress, strengths, or weaknesses. #BookCampPD
A4: Ts need to find ways of opening their classroom to allow parents to “see” what is happening. This can be done digitally, with websites, using social media, providing a recurring newsletter, etc. Ts need to be careful about how they cultivate these connections. #BookCampPD

A4: getting parents engaged in the true nitty gritty of academics has been a struggle for us. I will be reading other peoples thoughts and ideas to take back. #bookcamppd
Many thanks to @PlayYay - a shooting star in the field of education - for being our guest moderator! Isn't it amazing how many lead learners we have in our #BookCampPD#PLN who jump forward and guide our learning?
A4: Communicate early. 1st comm must be positive. Remember Ps experiences in schl may not have been pos. Give Ss voice to comm all the great things happening in schl. Give Ps opps to see these great things 1st hand. Events, soc media, invite them, call them, email. #bookcamppd
A4 Have district plans that unite families in learning #familyengagement Constant communication w Ps at building level creates a home/school collaboration tht is always a WIN. Partnerhsips create new opps fr Ss to openly explore, be motivated to do so = EDU resiliance #BookCampPD
And when I saw that question ahead of time it drew me to the chat. 😉 (sorry, haven’t read the book but definitely want to know what’s out there that covers this). #BookCampPD
Many thanks for joining #BookCampPD this evening as you continue your professional learning journey! Your willingness to spend your own valuable time learning about new ideas for students is commendable! You are appreciated!!
A4: Connecting home is an opportunity to empower Ss with responsibility to communicate, (digital, paper, oral, etc.) including curating&sharing S work, engaging in dialogue with the family in the learning, & designing curriculum re:culture, community, & family. #BookCampPD

Even in graduate work we are answering questions in discussions boards because it is a requirement. This is why I love Twitter, I choose my professional learning community! #bookcamppd
It is TRUE!
Conversations about this fabulous book continue next Sun evening when the book's authors join us!
This week, grab a copy of the book from Amazon https://t.co/8n3afrRYXc or forward this tweet to your principal and have them order it so your team is ready! #BookCampPD
In literal sense, really doesn't work! They're now tearing down this MS to build a schl that makes more sense! This schl was throwback from '70's w/more problems! Had NO windows or natural light, poor air quality, gross! Plus, no way to have a safe lockdown. Scary! #bookcamppd
