There's still plenty of time to get our brilliant homework add-on added to your epraise subscription! Ready, Set, Go! 📒
Welcome to - This week talking,"Modern & Effective Homework Strategies" - SIX questions to follow. Answer A1, A2, A3 etc. 😀
- Question 1:
What are the greatest issues for teachers in setting homework?
- Question 1:
What are the greatest issues for teachers in setting homework?
Quality of the work? Non completion?
That the research shows it has a low impact yet parents want it? https://t.co/2ey1rPyKCZ
- Question 1:
What are the greatest issues for teachers in setting homework?
New year. New term. New job. New school. New priorities...what are yours for 2016-17?
A1: making sure that is adds value to learning and isn't just to appease SLT, Ps etc...
Agree Am often amazed when parents complain that not enough is being set!
making the homework mean something and not just setting for the sake of it
The fact that research says it's ineffective but parents either hate or demand it
That's a challenge within itself
A1: making the homework mean something and not just setting for the sake of it
pupils need to see relevance of homework - you get some great work when they are engaged in what they're doing
Many: Ensuring it is useful & still within sch HW policy, completed to appropriate standard & not just parents doing it!
You say that, but some pupils just get on with it, whereas others don't, despite pressure from parents!
...and that's assuming that the parents know that some has been set
A1: checking it's been done and keeping on top of it. I'm terrible for remembering to check up on who hasn't done it!
Making it meaningful and chasing up when it's not done
That's difficult, when pressure from people means you HAVE to set some :-/
I think there's still a place for it, flipped learning has a real impact
What age we talking about homework for?
Yes - we ask that in Q5 re Hattie - How do we spread the word?
Improving A level results
I think kids could be doing more useful things with their time than homework... partic homework that is set for the sake of it
Spotting a pattern here Inconsistent requirements from parents. Perhaps all homework should be personalised!
I should probably do that! I always have grand plans of recording it as I do the register but forget
"We simply couldn't do without CPOMS, it is the glue that pulls everything together." Another glowing testimonial
There defiantly needs to be a purpose to it and that Ss know it's purpose
Agree. Some of the best homework I've had back has been project based work when pupils really engaged with their family
I try and use lots of practical activities to try and engage parents as well - science is a favourite with my class
Teachers, careers advisors, parents! You can set an RSS feed for all apprenticeship vacancies in your area https://t.co/tPyLrhc0q9
- Agree, but some still hold the belief that children NEED homework. They do. Honest ;-) https://t.co/xJTZFneHZN
There are far better ways to enrich a child's educational and cultural perspective: go for a walk; theatre; play; hobbies...
that's the key - making it relevant, not time consuming and getting kids to see the point of it
:
Fitting it to a policy instead of it being meaningful, creative and a continuation of learning
https://t.co/v91WgbAyjH
Agree, and think that is where the opinion of primary teachers may differ to secondary colleagues
ALL ages It's great to see the different opinions
https://t.co/wazLEuib6q
fitting it to a policy instead of it being meaningful, creative and a continuation of learning
A1 rigid homework timetables meaning too much "keeping kids busy" work is set rather than useful homework
Question 2:
How do you communicate to parents your expectations of pupils completing homework?
A1: You don't really know how it's been completed and by who...makes more pointless work for teachers, checking who has done it
Great responses with this evening, but please remember to use the # tag in your responses ... PLEASE ;0)
Well, ... There's 1 solution in which I truly believe ... means is definitely useful!
personally KS4 & 5 as that's all I teach but Ss need to get into the habit of doing a bit every night earlier
I working on a series of practical science based homework activities for all stages, kids take photos or videos of work
https://t.co/ii1CWpKIWC
it's really hard when there is so much else to do in class - I get kids to tick off a laminated list when done
https://t.co/lG4CHH9KDK
The greatest challenge for teachers, when setting homework, is to ensure that parents, and children, see the relevance and need! ()
It's a no-win situation, for everyone then!
I think kids shld be encouraged to get outdoors, exercise, do a good deed for someone, unwind, think, read...not 1 more worksheet
agree, primary homework should not look like what I may set for exam groups
A1:Much better setting tasks online. Some may not touch it, but some will repeat and repeat tasks for depth https://t.co/0RRxixHTFM
A1: You don't really know how it's been completed and by who...makes more pointless work for teachers, checking who has done it
Including at secondary, when GCSE's are looming, for example?
depends what you set, how motivated kids are and whether they see the relevance of it - all about creating a culture
Brilliant. Any fantastic examples that spring to mind that you can share with ?
Encouraging self study, self directed learning, following a passion YES, not hmwk for hmwk's sake https://t.co/YC3oqUnQKs
personally KS4 & 5 as that's all I teach but Ss need to get into the habit of doing a bit every night earlier
I'm not sure I agree with primary over exam training as I need them to do things not pass an exam
:
Rigid HW timetables meaning too much "keeping kids busy" work is set rather than useful HW.
https://t.co/DAFzUiCtmo
Great answer! https://t.co/PebrvPJQyH
I think kids shld be encouraged to get outdoors, exercise, do a good deed for someone, unwind, think, read...not 1 more worksheet
A2: for younger Ss works well, for older Ss expect the communication to come from them - self -management!
Hmm It's usually the same suspects each time?
what ages do you do flip learning with? I've struggled with KS3 and KS4 is it just persistence?
I've trained my ks4 & 5 students to do a bit every night and they see the progress the make
https://t.co/XLy8SyFd7f
personal exp has been lack of support in terms of parents not caring thus child doesnt or scribble on paper, Ps don't check S redo
Yeah, I reckon so https://t.co/kV7QbN7CWo
so why not set that as a task for them to do - get them to feedback in class or bring in photos/video of what they've done
True - much prefer optional online homework or open ended stuff where they contribute, rather than we check it's done.
the point is homework doesn't have to be a slog - can be highly motivating and engaging if it's practical
I did this last year - National Trust 50 things for Summer h'work. Takeaway h'work with outdoor options
Wow, indeed, there's a challenge...but an interesting one. Perhaps need to look at it from a different angle?
it was brilliant - as was 50 summer projects - so motivational for kids
I only teach KS4 & 5 but persist, even getting them to use directed youtube videos works well
Use of class newsletters, or letters, ensure that parents understand the importance of homework and how it has an impact.
Unfortunately, I'll have to leave ... although I have a particular interest in this evening's topic ... See you!
We have to be careful what we mean by progress.. twrds a narrow standardised test, or something > 21st C https://t.co/rjVYoehQHc
I've trained my ks4 & 5 students to do a bit every night and they see the progress the make
Suppose communicating the expectations to primary parents is different (less challenging) than secondary? https://t.co/VdG11gpSko
start of KS4 as I don't teach any lower but probably from the start of KS3
But I think a lot of it is perceived as a slog to students.. due to time/effort reqd in setting GOOD homework
Again, A2: it's all a matter of perception - implementing the approach means comm w/ parts = okay!
it's a narrow view but I judge it against targets
Ah, year 6! - Dare I ask, does H/w reflect preparations for SATs?
fair enough and I agree it can be but with a little bit of creativity it doesn't need to be
I found homework time tables really useful for year. It remind you to set it and plan along with your lessons
Joining the discussion about homework? Don't forget to use the hashtag!
a1- that kids get varying levels of support at home and it's often not done + little evidence it is of benefit.
I bet it feels like that sometimes ;0) Was thinking in terms of how students now access digital media and music?
leaf/bark rubbings, making bubble mix, plastic bag kites, flower pressing, making ice, bug hunt, making paper aeroplanes
Question 3
Does you school have a homework policy? How often is it updated?
I have seen it a lot in the time I have been teaching... I don't mind setting/marking meaningful stuff
Excellent Did the students connect the homework with the classroom learning?
Genuinely? The opportunity to practice, and consolidate, knowledge and skills builds confidence and reassurance.
In terms of primary aged pupils?
A1: It is important to create relevant homework that will further the learning, not just worksheets.
How did they evidence that, and did you have a tick sheet to complete for school managers ;0)
https://t.co/THUaGESMi0
HW can become yet another stick to beat students and teachers with. It is often onerous for both parties and thus lacks value.
Indeed And then there are those who complain when you do!
Don't forget the hashtag! 😊
https://t.co/PyxrohCLC3
Q2. & have been excellent as can provide examples of expected outcomes for h/w or compile activities
A record number of have gone live on over the holidays. As they go back we're helping them transform
evidence through bringing in made objects, discussion, photos, video - there's a booklet for kids & they tick when done
By creating and justifying play lists, reflecting on different genres which are being focused on?
It has to be meaningful. Something that makes a genuine impact. ()
Agree, but that can take time and skill to master, for the teacher?
https://t.co/B4GwvGiJox
Lack of basic equipment in poverty stricken areas (i.e. pencils & paper), and some may have responsibilities such as being carers.
A3:We don't ,but there is expectation it happens.Am going to trail online tasks for those who opt-in https://t.co/0jfMVTedB7
Question 3
Does you school have a homework policy? How often is it updated?
Yes, but worth it. Ss need authentic learning experiences, not just busywork.
That was thinking from the top of my head, and may not relate to the curriculum you need to follow
Get them to put together little documentaries
Reading is expected but no official homework
Is that workable and manageable for teachers? Should time be allowed to create this?
So far I've found that almost all kids engage - sometimes need to provide a few resources for some but they love it
we have learning evenings so parents can come in and see what's hapening
Fantastic It sounds like something that our friends at might like to hear about ;0)
The purpose of hw also must be to build skills... independent learning, working to deadlines etc...
great idea - we do video editing in ICT and some of them are excellent
I love bouncing ideas around like that, especially when it's not my responsibility LOL ;0)
A3 yes and every year it's tweaked based on the previous year
Welcome to This itself can be a challenge. All about the culture at home as well?
I do like to give them as much choice as possible - you get a real range of evidence
Give us a shout if you'd like any support or further thinking ;0)
giving them a choice of tasks can work well
Best type of homework is when children bring in things they have done WITHOUT being asked/set. Praise that! Other follow suit!
we just updated our homework policy! It was long overdue!
Do you find attitudes to homework (from pupils) need time to develop?
Question 4:
Homework and technology – How can we ensure all pupils have access to resources?
I'd like to know what others do. This is something we struggle with!
Brilliant Is that workable for you?
If you are joining the discussion, you may wish to use the hashtag so other can see your points. 😊
oh yup! That's a big one! Chn are often too embarrassed to say they don't have equip so don't do the hwk
Has it reflected a shift in attitudes?
UKEdChat Session 318: Modern & Effective Homework Strategies https://t.co/LLN8CN7yeA Following on from the result of the …
it was just rewritten at the end of the year to tie in with a home/school agreement, so it wasn't rolled out in time.
My bad! Returned home after a twenty-two hour travel! ( )
John Hattie's work puts homework at a nearly zero effect on learning outcomes.
As long as Ss see that there is a purpose they usually get on-board
https://t.co/XYxzKfXPx4
A1... Non completion and having to chase it up then when it's completed its done to a poor standard. Ineffective use of time IMHO
Try the menu approach. All choices are preselected by the teacher.
Time is flying by with this evening. It's even gone dark outside now!
very much so - pupils know what is expected and the staff work well as a whole to enforce the policy
A1. Setting homework that challenges all pupils at a suitable level, but also supports & broadens their understanding
A2) I have found that from a parent's point of view, my son's app has been fab. Highly recommended!
Ok, technology. Is one of the key positive homework strategies used?
based on the results and by middle leaders
Consistency among all is essential
q3 we have just updated ours (last updated 2 yrs ago) too many issues meant we had to evaluate and rethink
Certainly but choice is still limited. They will choose but end up doing what you require. ( )
it also means that pupils are adaptable and tend to need less support in later years with peer or self assessment.
Certainly but choice is still limited. They will choose but end up doing what you require. ( )
Oh YEAH – summer break is over (almost) and my column is back in action tomorrow. 😊 https://t.co/cRpc0pffGH
... on why leaders need to be coaches, on parent attacks online, on changing his mind about homework...
My go-to evidence when people discuss stuff like this! https://t.co/Ua1PLh9d30
John Hattie's work puts homework at a nearly zero effect on learning outcomes.
OOOhhhh What were the 'issues'?
run a lunchtime club, have a couple of PCs available in each classroom, loan out tablets, loads of ways!
we run homework club after school 1 a week for support and morning groups for chn who don't have Internet access.
Sounds like a well-rounded and considered policy
Q2 we have an intranet system which means all parents get notified and pupils can submit their homework on there too
Yes, that's the next question. And he specifically refers to homework in primary schools
too many students not doing it and always in DT which became unmanageable in the end. Lots of teachers not on board too
A4: Can offer use of tech in a homework club but it's less open ended them. Can offer alternative work if no tech access...:-(
(Paying Devils Advocate here) Does that not highlight people who are poor? How do you manage this?
we aim for pupils to value their homework and for staff to show that they value the work the pupil has done
Google Classroom is a great LMS for students to submit homework.
I also ask you (playing devils advocate), but does this highlight pupils who come from poor backgrounds?
Ah, everyone has to 'buy' into the policy. Everyone!
Question 5:
Research about homework – John Hattie argues that homework in primary has zero effect - Do you agree / disagree?
In my experience lack of Internet access is more related to parental control than poverty.
No matter how old they are, they still have a sense of pride in their work being displayed?
https://t.co/7GUt1CNYGb
as a teacher I set hwk to develop learning but as a parent whose child spends 40+ plus a week on hwk I think it's so wrong
I work in a "high deprivation area". I don't think it does highlight those chn, there's things going on all the time.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Fair point, but can a discussion take place with the parents about the relevance of the homework online?
Ideally this would be an amazing way to strengthen school-home relationship but do the same people just attend? ()
so true! We have updated it with lots of input from staff and students so fingers crossed it works!
I don't think 0 effect. I think if you want homework to have an effect it has to be something worthwhile.
Totally. Some students have HUGE challenges outside school. We need to remember that at times. All of us
disagree. Consolidation of learning without being in the classroom environment. From my teacher POV and as a parent
Q4, so many obstacles, having a library or work place open late helps, 1/2
might be an idea for the school to canvass parents' opinions? . Maybe train parents to help their kids with hw e.g Maths
Tend to agree A well developed and engaging project homework will have a positive impact.
yes, but I also think you should respect parents' views.
Although, I suspect Hattie was referring to worksheets. Perhaps?
Q5:
Research about homework – John Hattie argues that homework in primary has zero effect - Do you agree?
https://t.co/IcFClo0OCn
I also find that KS4 has a greater emphasis on assessment prep, this becomes more stale sadly.. :( more variation needed
A2. Both my sisters have a planner, which has written in their homework, due dates and sometimes tips to support them
oh yeah, I'm inclined to agree there. Sometimes they're worthwhile but sometimes they're homework for homework's sake.
If they have any. Don't mean to be rude, but some parents show less interest than others
2/2 kids sometimes have no quiet place to work at home, but aren't able to stay at sch. Make tasks short and resource free
heck I remember having a planner & having like a list of useful websites, vocab, etc. to support my learning
Aye, them were the days ;0) Can this be replaced by tech, perhaps?
Such as? Should schools, where appropriate, use Pupil Premium funding to provide incentives? £50 Argos vouchers? ()
bit late to the party...sorry! A5 I wouldn't say 0 effect, but I imagine short and sharp is key
You rock tonight Great to see your passion coming through :-)
maybe, but where internet access is restricted at home I think it's a conscious decision....
homework clubs, having iPads and laptops available. Set homework tasks that do not require tech
PP has to be clearly shown to be spent on PP children.
of their child and provide any support and advice to help them broaden their learning and knowledge
Therefore, primary school really need to consider how this is managed?
... Parents very rarely don't give permission for ict use in school which suggests fear of unknown
Please don't name and shame that school They should hang their heads in shame!
Question 6:
What is the most effective (and positive) homework strategy that you have experienced?
If its PP children that PP is being spent on its fine. PP is not general funding.
Excellent point Many could do with remembering this.
a4 Big tech fan, but isn't homework a chance to work on skills like hand writing and spelling? Not everything needs tech
Hmm, they're usually cumbersome for teachers and parents. There has to be a better way. Pigeons?
There's no accounting for that
and parents can see how their child is doing and what can be used to support their learning.
very... This has been a good chance to reflect, many thanks
I once set a short story competition to year 6. Choice of 5 visual stimulus - amazing feedback from chn and parents!
Will they need handwriting in their adult years? We should be teaching how to type on small devices effectively ;0)
good piece Caroline. A read worth sharing I would say.
Let us know when you send the pillowcase. Sounds like a story eligible for ;0)
Outcomes for test script reviews are on NCA Tools folks...
OMG, look at the time Last five minutes.....
maybe owls. It's a difficult one. Particularly for those who still don't have much, if any, access to tech and Internet
SShh We're talking about homework on tonight. Don't spoil the fun ;0)
Tech proficiency very important, but handwriting will never go and must be practised.
Giving the children games to play with their family with simple recording sheet to show who wins - they love it!
you can respect views and challenge them at the same time
I used , I chose 5 and they chose one to use as stimulus for their story. Some incredible writing happened!
I've never met a student who said "I wish I could use Facebook but I can't type on a smartphone!"
Some great discussion on tonight! People's passions coming through. Hope some can join us on now at 9pm. All welcome!
Q6 set great h/w researching local area, but it reflected on the research, how useful it was etc. Kids loved it
Ah, they learn from experience. A lot to be said for that ;0)
give that man a clap. Absolutely correct.
it's really hard for us parents if we don't know the methods (Maths) or policy
to understand and get to grips with it better
Need to give out some serious rewards for great handwriting homework.Usually unravelled from their pocket! https://t.co/06omikJsLB
Tech proficiency very important, but handwriting will never go and must be practised.
If had a star of the week, this week it would be :-)
