Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
The #Hourofcode is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries to help promote computer science week. (Dec 4th-8th, 2018) Learn more here: https://t.co/abmiTVo9UB#21stedchat
A1: The skills of resilience and attention to detail really are those that rise to the surface when students begin to code. The need to be systematic and thoughtful about each line makes those imperative. #21stedchat
A1. I believe that we should include coding to have students understand technology since our lives in this day and age are more technology focused which would open up more programs for students to learn on! #21stedchat
A1. We should be teaching coding as coding is becoming the most in-demand skill across industries. Students learn to critically think and learn from failing from mistakes #21stedchat
A1: IMO coding is a language that it going to be requierd when our Ss grow up. We have to prepare them for an unkown future. @karlfisch@mcleod#21stedchat
A1 students need a wide variety of problem solving experiences. We don’t need to focus on coding but have students be able to good questions when they run into technical problems #21stedchat
A1: Coding is just another form of language development and applied mathematics. It gives the the user instant feedback on their efforts, and builds perseverance while engaging the mind. #21stedchat
A1: I think coding engages Ss in ways other subjects don't. The syntax of coding has to be correct or it won't work. Being focused and paying attention to lower/uppercase letters and punctuation is essential. Also, gives Ss immediate feedback is code worked or not. #21stedchat
A1: I taught a sphero club and coached a raspberry pi team for science Olympiad the took 1st place at state and regionals. Ss love the response and joy that come from the creation process #21stedchat
Hmmm... Great point. Even if the language itself won't be needed - the high order thinking skills and grit and #growthmindset are essential. #21stedchat
A1: For me, this one is easy. Why teach coding? The very first reason would be, so I could learn coding! And certainly, students will need this skill as more technology automation reshapes the work force, more coding jobs will be replacing service ones.
#21stedchat
A2: I haven't due to time constraints put on by trying to cover content for std testing AND not finding a way or resource to add to a Chemistry or Forensic Science class. #21stedchat
A1. I personally just learned about the hour of code and am very interested in ways to bring it into the classroom since my field placements both haven’t indulged in using technology. #21stedchat
A2 students need to understand what happens in the physical world. What does it mean to move something at 25% power or 15 degree angle? I also like to tie art into the coding #21stedchat
A2: I try to spend about 45 min on Thursday or Friday doing Comp. Prog on Kahn Academy. Also spend some of that time letting students do free time coding on sites they like. #21stedchat
A2: As a former Computer Scientist, I have used my background to connect mathematics to real world, and used Spheros to teach function tables and graphing. Using a B.B.-8 always helps with engagement too! #21stedchat
A2: We have a stand alone CompSci class once per week for grades K-8, but integrate it in science and math specifically for formulas and data analysis. #21stedchat
The thing I like about teaching students to code is that it teaches them that the computer will do what you tell it and not what you want it to. They have to reconcile both. #21stedchat
Many students with autism and ADHD seem to enjoy code. This video shows #pairprogramming, which I think can help students work with their peers using appropriate social skills, too! #21stedchat
A3: I know a resource was the iPads in the one classroom I observed, then the app Kodable. I believe the school gained the iPads through a grant. #21stedchat
A3: I like to use Kahn Academy and the Intro to JavaScript and HTML/CSS classes they have on there. Some Ss find it frustrating and just want to do block coding. I think writing the code is important and Kahn makes this very accessible for all Ss. #21stedchat
A3: In grades 3-5 we use @arduino and @LEGO_Group robotics kits for more click and drag options, but I create my own lesson in #python for 6-8, made based on #MOOC courses I take on my own. #21stedchat
Q2: I have not gotten to explore this because I don’t have my own classroom yet but I look forward to seeing what works best for my students. #EDCI365#21stedchat
A4: I used @coursera and found courses in the languages I wanted to learn. Had to try a few until I found a structure that worked for me, but there are a ton of options! #21stedchat
A3. Scratch @scratch was easy enough for ME, which is saying a lot! Was recently inspired by @teachertechccs at #NCCAT to combine it w/ @makeymakey. So many possibilities! Haven’t tried w/Ss yet.
Has worked well so far. We actually circle back to @arduino in our high school computer science course where students write their own code for the hardware. #21stedchat
In reply to
@MrNasife, @arduino, @LEGO_Group, @arduino
A4: I think I would refer back to the hour of code site to be able to find good resources to teach myself to code! To model learning for my students #21stedchat
A4: Scratch is great beginner space for teachers and students, it not intimidating and contains lots of examples that you can tinker with to learn by doing. #21stedchat
A4: Kahn Academy Intro to JavaScript is easy to use and learn the basics of this language. I really like it. Has videos and projects. You can also submit the projects and questions you might have and get feedback from others on the site. #21stedchat
A1 Including coding into our classrooms is an amazing skill all students should be able todo. It is a transferable skill that can be used to teach patients and to allow students to gain additional skills and knowledge. #21stedchat
I only used it with my 6th graders. But they're a high achievers group, so I don't know if it's the best example. In Israel we teach @scratch at 4th grade even... #21stedchat
We begin with scratch style programming in 3rd, so I am thinking this could be an awesome addition to our 5th grade (last grade in elementary) experience. #21stedchat
A5. I believe that funding is a definite barrier. Because if teachers and schools cannot afford the technology for the classroom then it would be impossible to integrate. We can over come this by collaboration with other teachers to share. #21stedchat
A5. Many say lack of resources but I think it is more fear of the unknown. Helping teachers to teach coding without technology can help them feel more comfortable. Then you can add in coding tools. #21stedchat
A2. Wile I have not had the opportunity to include coding in the classroom yet, however I eagerly look forward to being able to in the near future. #21stedchat
A5: #personalizedlearning. It's difficult to reach every S, each working at their ow pace. It's very hands-on. Still struggling to find a system. #21stedchat
A5: I would say lack of resources and maybe support from admin. Definitely showing the positives of coding in the classroom and looking into grants or other outlets for the resources may help #21stedchat
A5: Time, time, time, and time. HOWEVER, there are applications of coding that would make experiences more empowering AND efficient once integrated! #21stedchat
A3. One of the most prevalent resources is the internet. We as teachers can look to each other worldwide when it comes to teaching on new frontiers in things such as coding. It is crucial that we look into keeping these things open discussions within our community. #21stedchat
A5: Time and fear of taking away from core/EOG tested subjects. Also, classroom management with devices like Chromebooks and Ipads can an issue. #21stedchat
A5: While access to resources is improving, it can be difficult to obtain access to robotics, and support to hold these classes. In reality, coding classes should replace some higher level math classes, bc it is applied and transferable to career opportunities #21stedchat
A5: Biggest barrier I can think of is teachers not being as tech savvy as our students. I'd be afraid to start a lesson on coding and not fully knowing what I'm doing and the Ss getting bored. #21stedchat
A6: We can (and have) all agreed that coding is a necessary addition to the skills of today’s learners. We MUST make a conscious effort to support students in pursuing the skill. #21stedchat
A1 Coding teaches invaluable tech career skills not only for general education students but also special education students. https://t.co/WgllkOUifa#21stedchat
I’ve learned so many resources and ideas of how to use and teach coding! I am excited to look at these websites. Coding teaches so many concepts and is something we should integrate into our teaching! #21stedchat#EDCI365
A6: I learned all about coding from this chat. I came I to this chat not knowing anything about coding and now I have resources to help me learn more about it and how to use it! #21stedchat
Coding is important in the classroom - now we just have to learn how to use it and become confident enough to share this skill with our students! #21stedchat
A6: I have learned so much about how we can use coding in the classroom and what resources can help accomplish that. Coding teaches key mathematical concepts to students. I look forward to using coding in my future classroom. #EDCI365#21stedchat
A6: It was great to hear all the different resources and how others are using them. Biggest take-away for me was getting some tips on using @arduino with students. Thanks @andrewjjulian juliian #21stedchat
A4. While I do not have a lot of experience in teaching myself coding, however I would do ample research before bringing it into my classroom. While it is proper to know everything possible about a subject before teaching it, it doesn't mean that you know every detail #21stedchat
I believe that first we need to educate ourselves but then we would need to research all the different types of resources to help our students before incorporate it into our classrooms #21stedchat
