    In reply to @tikaee
  • MrsArnote Aug 30 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A1: I suppose that since I don't really see talks lasting longer than 15 minutes in K, I hadn't thought about what to do when it doesn't end. I would be curious to see how Ss pick it back up the next day #ElemMathChat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:11 PM EDT
The hardest part of a number talk is the teacher's job of NOTATING student thinking! If you have the capability of "showing" your thinking tonight...DO IT! We all have to learn how to write what the kids are thinking! #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Mine too...I need to work on when a student is "wrong" and no one knows...how do I help them think through it? OR How do I help kids when I can't figure out what they did wrong? #elemmathchat
    In reply to @pearse_margie
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Yes, I'm not sure K could technically pick it back up BUT since most of the talks I've tried with K have been dots I'm not sure it matters. And you're right K's don't usually last longer. #elemmathchat

  • jkgibson6 Aug 30 @ 9:12 PM EDT
I have enjoyed a visual one I have done w 3rd/4th. A ten frame with each frame filled with the same number of counters. 8 frames filled with 7 each... #elemmathchat
  • pearse_margie Aug 30 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1. I find it's helpful to share that quiet wait time helps us be able to think and that it may get silent for a bit and that's a good thing. #elemmathchat
  • MissMath_Teach Aug 30 @ 9:12 PM EDT
I love how much I learn every time I do number talks- about my learners and about my assumptions #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @Kelli_McCoy_, @howie_hua
  • AnnEliseRecord Aug 30 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Q2: I would guess most G1/2 students would say the ? is 12 because they haven't developed the understanding of equality yet. Many students see the = sign and think it means to do an action rather than "same as" #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:12 PM EDT
@MissMath_Teach YES, YES...my friend @rousseemath has been creating some of these because we can't "find" them anywhere. Tell me more! #elemmathchat
    In reply to @jkgibson6, @MissMath_Teach, @rousseemath
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:13 PM EDT

  • MissMath_Teach Aug 30 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1 I notice the focus on talking and sharing #ElemMathChat
  • howie_hua Aug 30 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2: I need to balance both sides so since 5 is 1 greater than 4, i need to use 1 less than 8, which is 7. Students might answer 12 because they see 8+4. #elemmathchat
  • AnnEliseRecord Aug 30 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Fav #talk. 4th grade 45x16. One S said he knew it was 720 because there are 8 45 degree angles in a circle for 360 degrees. 2 circles worth, so 720. Pure magic! #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:14 PM EDT
I need to work on this. Can you share any examples???? (visual) I'm decent at notating but I struggle making it visual. #elemmathchat

Here's our 2nd Number Talk! Trying to mix up the grade levels! Q3: What strategies could you use to solve 15 x 9? #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:15 PM EDT
I think we moved right past Q2 and right into Q3 Answer the one most interesting to you! I'll add Q2 again. #elemmathchat
  • tikaee Aug 30 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2 7 is the missing #. 1st and 2nd graders might use mentally base 10 blocks or 10s frames to explain their answer. They might also decompose the first equation. #elemmathchat
  • MissMath_Teach Aug 30 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2 I notice that 5 is more than 4. If the sides have the same value, the missing number has to be less than 8 #ElemMathChat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:16 PM EDT
oooooohhhhh! Love it Lori! What does someone else think? #elemmathchat
    In reply to @MissMath_Teach

Tell me what their decomposing of the first side might look like? #elemmathchat
    In reply to @tikaee
  • howie_hua Aug 30 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A3: Student might do 15x10, then subtract 15. They also might do 30x9 (270) then cut it in half. #elemmathchat
    • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Here's our 2nd Number Talk! Trying to mix up the grade levels! Q3: What strategies could you use to solve 15 x 9? #elemmathchat

    In reply to @MissMath_Teach, @MrsArnote

Ss might decompose the 8 into 4+4 or 5+3 to have the same on each side. #elemmathchat
  • MissMath_Teach Aug 30 @ 9:19 PM EDT
If they are not finished thinking about it in 10-15 min I tell them to write it out or think more & home & report back to me the next day #ElemMathChat

  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:31 PM EDT
    Q6: See below!! #elemmathchat
  • tikaee Aug 30 @ 9:31 PM EDT
That is the beauty of Number Talks. It is all about strategy. The answer is secondary. #elemmathchat

  • MissMath_Teach Aug 30 @ 9:31 PM EDT
More often than not my number talks are related to previously taught skills from both previous years & earlier in that year #ElemMathChat
    In reply to @davidwees
  • AnnEliseRecord Aug 30 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Q5: I love this berry picture to encourage the use of using partial products to figure out the total. Lends itself nicely to that. #elemmathchat
  • professorteds Aug 30 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A5 Love this image. I would use it to focus on relational understanding, where the # of blueberries is always proportional to the # of raspberries. Maybe, if this is what one tray looks like, and I have too pack 10 trays for the fair, how many raspberries do I need? #elemmathchat
  • Kelli_McCoy_ Aug 30 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A5: It reminds me of a problem I saw in Mathematical Mindsets (I think) about estimating and having students reason through how they would estimate the number of berries. I could use that with 4th. #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Ok...so I'm a speed demon...now there is a number string up from Parrish's book Number Talks... #elemmathchat This is for K Amy!!!
  • pearse_margie Aug 30 @ 9:32 PM EDT
    Hi! Welcome to #elemmathchat
    In reply to @professorteds, @OhioState
  • jkgibson6 Aug 30 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A5: You could use for fractions or proportions with older Ss. Or maybe put a price on one pint of blackberries and one pint of raspberries and have them compare the cost for all? #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Sure it is...awesome! #elemmathchat I like it for the distributive property. Kids might add the blackberries and raspberries separately.
    In reply to @pearse_margie
  • tikaee Aug 30 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A6 Each picture has 7 dots. I. ❤️sharing dot cards across grade levels. It is interesting to hear the older Ss answers and much as the little people. You find out so much about their number sense. #elemmathchat
  • MNmMath - Moderator Aug 30 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Hi #elemmathchat friends! I have spotty Connection in the football stadium. I know what number talks are I wonder how are number talks and math talks different? Do they meet the same goals?
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:33 PM EDT
YES....I was thinking the same exact thing!!!!! #elemmathchat Perfect!

    In reply to @jkgibson6
  • jkgibson6 Aug 30 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A6: ON the first two many would subitize the 5 and add 2. On the last one, I think they would see the 6 first and then add on #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:35 PM EDT
    Q7a: Here we go...another number string...chunked up! #elemmathchat
  • themathgirl Aug 30 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Help me understand?? I feel vulnerable. What do you mean the number of blackberries is proportional to the number of raspberries? #elemmathchat
    In reply to @professorteds
  • pearse_margie Aug 30 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A6. I would use this number string to promote part/part/whole thinking and/or counting on #elemmathchat
  • MrsArnote Aug 30 @ 9:35 PM EDT
    Q6: Usually Ss would see the groups of 5 and 2 more easily in A & B. C would like get a variety of responses, like 4 & 3 or 6 & 1. #ElemMathChat
  • MissMath_Teach Aug 30 @ 9:35 PM EDT

Hi Number Talks is specific to mental math strategies. Number Talks and Math talks encourage purposeful discourse and metacognition. Both our Ss centered. Number Talks is a routine #elemmathchat
