Elementary math chat is a weekly math chat where participants come to discuss best practices, examine student work, explore routines for reasoning and research that guides and supports pedagogy centered on problem and student based learning.
Hi! Margie from PA
Math Coach!
I'm here because I LOVE me some #elemmathchat
Feel pretty comfortable with Number Talks; always ready to learn more.
Excited to have @themathgirl leading tonight.
A0: Kelli, 4th math in Texas; I'm maybe a "2"? I saw @howie_hua notifying his Ss about the chat tonight. I'm trying to start number talks this year, and I have a lot to learn! #elemmathchat
Ann Elise - Math Specialist from NH. While I'm very comfortable with number talks, I'm always knowing I can learn more. I look forward to #elemmathchat all week!
A1: I suppose that since I don't really see talks lasting longer than 15 minutes in K, I hadn't thought about what to do when it doesn't end. I would be curious to see how Ss pick it back up the next day #ElemMathChat
The hardest part of a number talk is the teacher's job of NOTATING student thinking! If you have the capability of "showing" your thinking tonight...DO IT! We all have to learn how to write what the kids are thinking! #elemmathchat
Mine too...I need to work on when a student is "wrong" and no one knows...how do I help them think through it? OR How do I help kids when I can't figure out what they did wrong? #elemmathchat
Yes, I'm not sure K could technically pick it back up BUT since most of the talks I've tried with K have been dots I'm not sure it matters. And you're right K's don't usually last longer. #elemmathchat
I have enjoyed a visual one I have done w 3rd/4th. A ten frame with each frame filled with the same number of counters. 8 frames filled with 7 each... #elemmathchat
A1. I find it's helpful to share that quiet wait time helps us be able to think and that it may get silent for a bit and that's a good thing. #elemmathchat
Q2: I would guess most G1/2 students would say the ? is 12 because they haven't developed the understanding of equality yet. Many students see the = sign and think it means to do an action rather than "same as" #elemmathchat
A2: I need to balance both sides so since 5 is 1 greater than 4, i need to use 1 less than 8, which is 7. Students might answer 12 because they see 8+4.
#elemmathchat
Fav #talk. 4th grade 45x16. One S said he knew it was 720 because there are 8 45 degree angles in a circle for 360 degrees. 2 circles worth, so 720. Pure magic! #elemmathchat
A2 7 is the missing #. 1st and 2nd graders might use mentally base 10 blocks or 10s frames to explain their answer. They might also decompose the first equation. #elemmathchat
I do not carrying the same question on the following day. I may start the next day with a related problem in a string or a different problem altogether based on the same strategy #ElemMathChat
If they are not finished thinking about it in 10-15 min I tell them to write it out or think more & home & report back to me the next day #ElemMathChat
I’ve done it with grades 1 through 5 grade for a few years now & always results in enlightening debate. If you try it, I’d love to hear how it turns out for you #ElemMathChat
A0 Hi all, jumping in late tonight. I’m an elem math education professor at @OhioState. I’m a 3 with number talks and love hearing about how others use math talk in their practice. #elemmathchat
A5 Love this image. I would use it to focus on relational understanding, where the # of blueberries is always proportional to the # of raspberries. Maybe, if this is what one tray looks like, and I have too pack 10 trays for the fair, how many raspberries do I need? #elemmathchat
A5: It reminds me of a problem I saw in Mathematical Mindsets (I think) about estimating and having students reason through how they would estimate the number of berries. I could use that with 4th. #elemmathchat
A5: You could use for fractions or proportions with older Ss. Or maybe put a price on one pint of blackberries and one pint of raspberries and have them compare the cost for all? #elemmathchat
A6 Each picture has 7 dots. I. ❤️sharing dot cards across grade levels. It is interesting to hear the older Ss answers and much as the little people. You find out so much about their number sense. #elemmathchat
Hi #elemmathchat friends! I have spotty Connection in the football stadium. I know what number talks are I wonder how are number talks and math talks different? Do they meet the same goals?
Hi Number Talks is specific to mental math strategies. Number Talks and Math talks encourage purposeful discourse and metacognition. Both our Ss centered. Number Talks is a routine #elemmathchat
Hi #elemmathchat friends! I have spotty Connection in the football stadium. I know what number talks are I wonder how are number talks and math talks different? Do they meet the same goals?
I think they are all the same...as long as we treat them like a routine. When our students come to the carpet and I say number talks...their fists go to their chests. It's funny. #elemmathchat Is that fair?
I have done number talks, but this will be my first year using the strings from @numbertalks . I can't wait to see how fast my K Ss can make the connection that each card is the same quantity #elemmathchat
I think Sherry Parrish coined the name number talks...so everything else that has come out is "different" But i think it doesn't matter really... #elemmathchat My opinion!
A7 Whenever I see 9s, I always visualize my hands. 9x7, that’s 6 fingers on th left and 3 fingers in the right. But what I’m really doing is knowing that 9x7 is just 10x7 - 7. So for 8x7, it’s just 10x7 -7 -7. #elemmathchat
Number Talks by Sherry Parrish is good...but I have that PDF in the folder I will share. It's a pretty expensive book. I also like Making Number Talks Matter whom I've quoted a lot tonight on the first slides. #elemmathchat
Me too. There are a couple videos of teachers doing these online. I like how the students see different combinations. Have YOU used actually numbers for number talks yet in K? #elemmathchat
Do number talks revolve around a series if number string problems always, or can they just revolve around number/math concepts? I have mixed and meshed so many pedagogical practices that I don't know what I do!😆 #elemmathchat
I think a lot of the number talks in sherry parrish's book are number strings. They are all connected to one another. You can use each problem to help you with the next. HOWEVER, it's also ok just to do ONE problem. Does that help? #elemmathchat
MOST is a huge word! NO, but the fire is spreading! #elemmathchat I've done 3 this week. AND a new teacher tried one...a NEW teacher. He was brave. He did great!
@pearse_margie We (my colleague @caldwell_callie and I) have scheduled them in for 10-15 minutes every day for the year! That's why we want to make sure we know all the best practices! #elemmathchat
I think 1/3 of my teachers do them regularly (3 or more times a week) I think 1/4 do something once a week. Many are worried about doing it "wrong." I keep pushing that growth mindset. They get easier the more you do them, I tell them.
There are soooooooo many routines you can do. Number Talks are awesome. HOWEVER, so are count arounds or counting collections, or etc.... There are sooo many good number sense routines. #elemmathchat

#elemmathchat I have a mix. Each year more and more teachers are doing either a number talk or math talk of some sort daily! A few do them occasionally and a handful that do not attempt at all. The word is spreading though. As more teachers rave about the NS more try it out!
I just made a commitment to myself to do more than just number talks most days. I have plenty of time in my day to do a talk plus another number sense routine #ElemMathChat

Not a trend yet in our classrooms. When we talk about them at PD, Ts love them but I don’t see them happening. Wonder how to bridge the gap #ElemMathChat
#elemmathchat It does scare them at first. I have found they feel safer if I come and co-teach through the first few and then they gain confidence to keep going.

I think teachers need ideas to start with...so maybe a number talk or lots of choices for lessons/units??? #elemmathchat They don't know...what they don't know.

I start smooshing based on PD I give. Participants use the names interchangeably. I kind of follow suit just to get the routine out there & make it accessible to the most Ts #elemmathchat
If you have some teachers that want to come visit classrooms to see number talks in action in person, you can come visit us in Washington, MO. I think you are close if I remember correctly. #elemmathchat
Last year grades 3-4 did number talks daily. It was a huge success. This school year number talks will be implemented daily k-5. My 4th and 5th grade Ts have already had a great start because Ss are already familiar with them. I'm excited to see continued growth. #ElemMathChat
I am not sure aboutmisconceptions, but I wonder if they will deconstruct the whole into the smallest triangles. They may not know each or piece has to be same size so denominator may be off . #ElemMathChat
This is a link for tonight's google folder. I will add the presentation my questions came from and then a few resources. Just ask if you want anything I forget. :) #elemmathchathttps://t.co/zt8zagcWy4
