I hope you were able to watch the Rick Defour video. I have shown that in trainings for PLC work and with my current staff @DixieHeightsHS . very powerful when thinking about groups and teams. #admin2b
Hi everyone,
Ben Lamp from Pewaukee, WI, Art teacher and in an Ed. Leadership program
Favorite ice cream would be rainbow sherbet if I'm allowed to cheat like that

A1: I really like the way it was described in the video. Interdependent, goals and accountable. Interesting that we often strive for independence rather than interdependence. #admin2b
When I think of high functioning teams they have a common goal and trust each other to accomplish this goal. They work hard and hold each other accountable to the goal. They are not afraid to have different opinions but will compromise self for benefit of team #admin2b
A1: A team feels committed to a common purpose and they develop a sense of team ownership and belonging. A group has to be given more direction on what to do and every group member tends to focus more on themselves than on the group's effort. #admin2b
A1: I liked the Jordan and Tiger analogy, everyone with Jordan had to buy in, gel, and be accountable for the same goal to become a great team.
#admin2b
A2: Our district works hard on creating common planning time for all the PLCs so weekly meetings can occur. The master schedule has to be created with intention. Subs have been provided as well to allow for team planning. #admin2b
A2: My experience is that teams that are functioning at a high level meet more than once a week. Even on their own time. They are committed. Low functioning teams are together once a week. They are compliant #admin2b
Before i left my last school we created a master schedule where content teams were on same planning. Like all your Alg 1 teachers would have same planning and then they would have 50 minutes a week to work on the work #admin2b
A2: We always have 45 minutes on Wednesday mornings to work together with teams before school starts, once a month that time will be a dedicated staff meeting. We also have team meetings during PD days.
#admin2b
A3: Planning, delivery strategies (PL/Differentiation), how to best remediate/reteach/challenge students, data analysis, celebrations,... Our teams develop group norms & goals, establish roles, take meeting notes to help them with accountability, & are student-centered. #admin2b
I think they find value, real value in the meeting together. I think the amount of meeting time does not cause collaboration but the quality. Why do we meet is critical to answer up front. #admin2b
We try to focus the efforts of the 4 essential questions of PLC work
1. What do we want students to know
2. How will we know the know it
3. what do we do if they don't
4. what do we do if they do #admin2b
Agree. Do we model that in our admin meetings from a district point if view OR do we talk the talk but only do management in those meetings. We have to model, model, model. #admin2b
A4: Most school's admin in our district take turns visiting their different "PLCs". Meeting notes on the School drive allows for admin to monitor the effectiveness of their weekly PLC discussions. It's vital for the school leader to provide feedback after their visits. #admin2b
A4: talk to teachers about their discussion. Be in classrooms. Step in when possible to collaboration. Be an active member of the learning process. Not a bystander. #admin2b
A4: at my last school, we switched to planning period meetings so admin could be involved in the discussion and to answer questions. I think it is important to guide the work but teams have to own it themselves. with no oversight, poor teams flounder #admin2b
Time flies when your having fun. I told myself last time I would only do 3 questions, but liked all four. I hope you enjoyed the discussion. I am very passionate about PLC work and creating good teams to do what is best for students. Always looking for ideas! #admin2b
Thanks everyone for their input. There are many chats out there that talk about groups and teams and PLC work. Join those discussions and improve your current situation. I hope everyone has a great night! #admin2b
Thanks @Dixie_Principal for facilitating tonight. Thanks for sharing the video up front. Great reminder of the difference between team and group. #admin2b

I wrestled with that a lot and cane to conclusion that just like in classrooms do@e students need more structure and support. I think teams are the same way. How can we be sure we are supporting and not getting in the way? #admin2b
