Ken O’Connor. Happy Leap Day from Central Florida to
A1 We're moving toward PBL--hope that ups the curiosity!!
A1: Sometimes yes and sometimes no - when given some choice the probability is much better.
It is strange! I want Ss to not be worried about NOT being right!
Russ, FL principal joining in. Excited for & to attend this summer in Denver!!!
A1: Start the lesson with the why...let them get to the what through their own journey!
Rannnnnddddddyyyyyyy Looking forward to your thoughts on innovation!
A1: We end each day by setting goals for the next time we're together and talking about how we will get there.
A1 - We empower our Learners to be the ones asking the Questions as it creates inquisitive minds. https://t.co/4eoDL3LtYA

Popping in and out of for a bit! Hi all!
The why is soooo important!! https://t.co/Gd6BSWOTxK
A1: Start the lesson with the why...let them get to the what through their own journey!
We are reading Visible Learning for our leadership team book study. I met Mr. Hattie 2 weeks ago.
A1: I hope so. That's a primary focus for me.Ask open ended questions, help Ss set goals and make plans, connect them to accomplish
A1: No stupid questions, higher order thinking, project learning, taking risks. Explorations, student centered. Let kids be kids.
A1 The more students have choice in what/how they learn, what tools they use, and switching up those tools, increases curiosity.
A1: Provide clear purpose for lessons but allow ample time for student's personal reflection and discovery.
Do you think framing lessons, units, etc. with essential questions also helps?
A1 The most powerful way to inspire curiosity is to NOT build the normal school roadblocks. Keep choice & empowerment alive!
I'm gleaming a wealth of reflective thinking from Hattie's book! https://t.co/hGTkruNgXh
We are reading Visible Learning for our leadership team book study. I met Mr. Hattie 2 weeks ago.
A1: Need to leave the Ss with questions & relate the content to their lives so they WANT to learn more
It is so important to encourage students to ask questions not just of me but among themselves. https://t.co/d0S7VQZF8N
A1 - We empower our Learners to be the ones asking the Questions as it creates inquisitive minds. https://t.co/4eoDL3LtYA
Q1 Do your students leave your school / classroom more curious? If yes, how do you accomplish such curiosity?

Q1 Do your students leave your school / classroom more curious? If yes, how do you accomplish such curiosity?
Good point, and the best Ts I work with do this. The mediocre Ts seem not to encourage S to S dialogue.
How do you guide your students after asking why? How do your methods fit with any standards you have to abide by?
- Really helps me understand my Ss, their priorities, and where their understanding is. and I love Hattie. :)
Allow the students to lead the classroom at times. What is relevant to them? You can ask or let them show you!
A1: Yes, by giving them time to develop their own passions, they will continue to want to learn more after the school day is over

Agreed! When Ss take ownership in their learning they will be motivated to do the work to learn.
Q2 One key to innovation comes in the form of "disrupting your routine". How do you disrupt your routine and your Ss routine?
Would like to hear more about how you do MakerSpaces and GeniusHour.
A1. I think that not only allowing but encouraging questions and exploration is crucial to our students.
Well lookie who joined ! Welcome, friend! https://t.co/5z4MZEypoT
A1. I think that not only allowing but encouraging questions and exploration is crucial to our students.
A1: S curiosity occurs by understanding their interests. Ts allow Ss chances to share own experiences/interpretations.
RT Q2 One key to innovation comes in the form of "disrupting your routine". How do you disrupt your routine and your Ss routine?
BAM! Said my the Man! https://t.co/x7bhuhSbX4
A1. I think that not only allowing but encouraging questions and exploration is crucial to our students.
Just do it! Start with Visible Learning as the first book.
Science inquiry! Integrating LA and Science is a favorite curiosity starter.
Thanks for sharing! We need to remember, the excitement of "learning" things, for the 1st time. https://t.co/RPrRELu5MG
Been reading everything via my Kindle App. https://t.co/yFGtABl0A0
- I have googled tons but have not been able to sink the $ on the books. Need to just do it. On my list for 2 yrs

https://t.co/uQxRxEaLuo
Agreed! When Ss take ownership in their learning they will be motivated to do the work to learn.
yes & we can start by giving staff choice and empowerment. Have Ts lead a staff meeting on topic of their choice.
A1: Build curiosity by providing safe opportunities to exercise it. Kids should be excited to imagine & celebrated for exploring.
A2: You lead by doing...I will be the first to try out new tech like or for students and teachers
A2: Ss create your daily routine, then it will constantly be different. Set them up to be the leaders and they will run the room
We are trying to roll out the same because of how impactful it could be for S ownership & buy in. https://t.co/gmg7omt1aQ
a1: It's a work in progress...rolling out mobile MakerSpaces and introducing Genius Hour to give kids more ownership
Start w a question or two...let them discuss- depends on subject and standards...always room for the why!
A2 My kiddos love dancing during our transitions!
A2: Take risks and try something new. Even if you don't know how it will turn out, try it and build on your successes.
"Encouraging" may even be too mild of a word. Ts should facilitate/ demand/??? questions.
A1: I'm not sure if they're leaving curious...but when they come back...we get another chance
Great point--S discussions that include "wrong" answers but great thinking are authentic and get Ss thinking about why?
- I'm a page flipper, highlighter, book on my night stand kind of guy.
A2: Don't be afraid to deviate from the lesson is you see a "teachable" moment.
A2: Take risks and try something new. Even if you don't know how it will turn out, try it and build on your successes.
A2: Try something new. Push my comfort zone. Encourage & help staff take risks that will engage Ss
So many times this is forgot

That is awesome! Our hope is to set up an Amazon store where parents can help us stock carts!
A2 Do things that lead you to ask for forgiveness not permission.
I agree. This slide was great. The whole conference got me thinking about what I can do different to have a bigger effect.
A2:I like creating a flexible routine.Ask questions, explore answers, set goals, make a plan, make progress, reset goals - repeat.
A2 I expect Ts to use G docs so I use them ALL THE TIME with Ts. https://t.co/dc5WdDTGcr
A2: Teachers need to try and understand from the viewpoint of the learners we serve. https://t.co/xlfyBvHSvQ
RT Q2 One key to innovation comes in the form of "disrupting your routine". How do you disrupt your routine and your Ss routine?
we do this in our 2nd grade classroom all the time!
I was too then realized my iPad is always with me to just read.
A2 Disrupting learning happens when we move learning out of a comfort zone Life is messy Throw curveballs to ensure thinking
That's an amazing idea!!! Thank you. https://t.co/XLS75BpLTV
That is awesome! Our hope is to set up an Amazon store where parents can help us stock carts!

RT Q2 One key to innovation comes in the form of "disrupting your routine". How do you disrupt your routine and your Ss routine?
A2: Disrupt w new room arrangement, seating & dift routine. Ok to simply allow class to move with student-driven learning target
By "demand" I meant that Ss in my classes had no choice but to engage - asking Qs is part of that.
A2: Disruption flips the paradigm into something not normally seen...time to turn the classroom upside down
A2: Must be mindful of the status quo and SQ thinking. Encourage ppl to question opinions, processes, etc.. baby & bathwater!
Love this : throw curve balls.

Way to go! Need to walk the talk. Model what you want to see from staff & students. Share your struggles & successes
Q3 How are you building relationships that lead to innovating experiences for your learners?
Love messy or chaotic Learning! https://t.co/cvHfLyp1B5
A2 Disrupting learning happens when we move learning out of a comfort zone Life is messy Throw curveballs to ensure thinking
Even moving from desks to sit in the floor in a circle can be disruptive in a GOOD way
A2: You can disrupt your routine by bringing something new into your space or letting things come to you in the form of breaks
A2 I have a great supportive administrator who lets me jump out of my box frequently :)
Sorry, former Eng teacher, I often spit out a bunch of synonyms!

RT Q3 How are you building relationships that lead to innovating experiences for your learners?
A3 - We offer our Learners to facilitate the learning and it puts them in the Driver's Seat! https://t.co/p3YGiC06Vz
Q3 How are you building relationships that lead to innovating experiences for your learners?
A2 Ask Our Kids to co-create the learning experience
Sometimes a simple change in the physical arrangement of your room is disruption enough. https://t.co/w47jPR0YGn
A2: Disrupt w new room arrangement, seating & dift routine. Ok to simply allow class to move with student-driven learning target
A2: Disruption for some S's may be creating safe norms and modeling consistent learner-centric behaviors.
A3: The simple, but effective gestures, greet Ss at the door, ask them how they are doing, thank them, and show gratitude.
Time for a paradigm shift?
https://t.co/AFGo0DpI6N
A2: Disruption flips the paradigm into something not normally seen...time to turn the classroom upside down
I have desks at different levels, stools, comfy chairs...kids are all over my room!
A3 Positive relationships build trust. Trust leads to risk. Learners who risk spark innovation!
A3: Know them and what their passions are - that builds trust then they'll go anywhere with you.
A3 By modeling risk-taking those around us will do the same!
A3: Lead by modeling. If you want Ts and Ss to take risks, model what you ask. Build them by including others in your endeavors.

A3 after building trust, making sure Ts can take risks and it is acceptable to fail!
A3: Explicitly giving permission for Ts & Ss to fail. It's ok to make mistakes. Try some new & different. And celebrate growth!!
We like to think outside the content / curriculum! https://t.co/IiRFWlLYGt
A3: Trust and acceptance allows St to want to take risks. Innovation starts from action. Think outside the circle.
A3 Build trust and a safe classroom/school by modeling struggle through messy learning... for principals, teachers & students.
A3: We use to interact with teachers and better understand the people we create programs for
A3: we start our week off on the floor talking to each other and sharing what good things we see happening in our room!
A3: I constantly say "It's not your answer but your evidence that matters, once we hear from everyone we will have the answer"
A3: Creating a classroom climate where failing is encouraged, seen as a positive thing, & celebrated.
A3 Empower learners by challenging them to ask, "What if, why not & so what?" Innovation will follow https://t.co/sB8At763W6
Q3 How are you building relationships that lead to innovating experiences for your learners?
A3 Offering to trust others first; creating opportunities to build trust;
A3: We have innovation/passion project time. Ss who are interested meet in the media center for brainstorming & think/work time.
A3 - Lately, we've been prompting our Learners to "Stand & Deliver" to facilitate and defend learning. https://t.co/p3YGiC06Vz
Q3 How are you building relationships that lead to innovating experiences for your learners?
FAIL=First Attempt In Learning. It's how the kids respond to that failure that is important
Ss need to know it's okay to take risks and make mistakes--risks and mistakes help us grow
Yes! Think outside the Apple Core. AKA CCSS
A3: Give students the opportunity to teach the class, and the T to learn from them.
Absolutely! https://t.co/HKtrv9HDhg
A3: Lead by modeling. If you want Ts and Ss to take risks, model what you ask. Build them by including others in your endeavors.
A3 Ask a lot of inquiry type questions; explore the interests of others
A3 It's important to me to support Ts who are trying something new w Ss by listening, observing, giving feedback, providing resources
A3:Ss understand that every thought is valued, especially divergent thinking and we're a team in search of the deepest understanding
We MUST tap into the passions and interests of our Learners!
https://t.co/g2F1tvYQ0m
A3 Ask a lot of inquiry type questions; explore the interests of others
A3 Build trust by giving feedback, not grades, during the learning process
How do you ensure the Ss who are not teaching are learning the info?
A3: This month, hosting our 1st STEAM Family Night w/ a bunch of hands-on activities to get Ss and Ps excited about creating!
A3: I talk to my kids about my learning and how I sometimes struggled in school as a kid. They see it's okay to FAIL
It was very powerful - there are so many opportunities!
That is the goal of a COL - to get our Ss to feel so valued that they embrace thinking and learn deeply. https://t.co/BCZfUXQgSJ
A3:Ss understand that every thought is valued, especially divergent thinking and we're a team in search of the deepest understanding
Q4 Does your classroom, building, & district have a shared vision? How do you create a shared vision for your learners?
A3: Building innovative relationships means taking risks and empowering ppl to try, try and try...no penalty for trying
Absolutely!!! https://t.co/yU46GCuLVO
A3 It's important to me to support Ts who are trying something new w Ss by listening, observing, giving feedback, providing resources
Think, who "owns" the classroom/building? You or the students?
Yes, yes a thousand times yes. https://t.co/C3B99CZsXp
A3 Build trust by giving feedback, not grades, during the learning process
A3 Once having learned interest areas, inquiry what they don’t know and want to know, then provide new info & "what ifs”
So important for Ts to show Ss that we were not all "perfect" students
Ss need to know that their Ts are human and make mistakes too!
A4 - Our classroom is a safe haven to inquire, defend, collaborate and be challenged! based on https://t.co/gv8gU6NVdQ
Q4 Does your classroom, building, & district have a shared vision? How do you create a shared vision for your learners?
RT Q4 Does your classroom, building, & district have a shared vision? How do you create a shared vision for your learners?
create a strong classroom family, S want learn what their peers are passionate about. T lead by listening to S.
A3: reread the q and want to add that I trust my students to do amazing things from open ended questions. That is the magic sauce
A4 is in the process of making the mission statement a part of the fabric during which the vision is realized
A4: Do not assume everyone is on the same page. Work together to get there and live the vision each day
A4: You need to include student voice and input in your shared vision...especially in elementary school!
A4 & I worked on shared vision and that is what lead to a COL.
Need help with our shared vision. Too many initiatives and pulling Ts in too many directions. Need help with this.
Shared vision requires accepting all kinds of perspectives, right? Do it by embracing diversity. You see? https://t.co/rEqrYBGcYX
A4 Making the vision visible in writing; refer to it often; provide concrete connections to the “why” of the “what” we’er doing
A4: Simple shared vision to help each other grow. Challenge each other. Growth mindset always. Disagreement can offer growth.
write a classroom vision statement with Ss that echoes your district vision.
I have been thinking about that as well. What website/mechanism are you going to use?
We spend the first 2 weeks of school building the Culture of Learning in our classroom. https://t.co/ggzOPnEFme
Need help with our shared vision. Too many initiatives and pulling Ts in too many directions. Need help with this.
Agreed Compliance kills curiosity Imagine if Apple ran on compliance! Encourage Ss to question and think differently
Great idea - the classroom vision statement!
A3: getting them invested in what they create by giving them freedom to choose what they create!
Taking a small work break. Love all the questions and answers on and . Thanks for the motivation!
A4: As long as students are always priority then the mission is the same. However too many mandates get in the way of creativity
A4 We all like to think so, the reality is that in order to do so it must be at the forefront of every action/interaction
A3: written notes & slowing down to build rlshps. Innovation helped w fear removed. Todays challenges need fresh ideas. Open
A4: Absolutely! However, sometimes we don't communicate this vision w/ Ss. Just assume they understand it.
A4 We hold meetings during which we clarify & create common knowledge; support one another when things get messy, frustrating, etc.
Three big take aways from : Blog, building#, engage teachers about teaching and learning through technology!
A4: If our vision is the success of everyone how can there be disagreement? Now find ways to move towards that vision.
A4: Sometimes innovators have to break the mold, or the rules, to make change.
A4 - For our Learners, the Vision must be VISIBLE. Use Mind Maps to show relationships in Learning.
A4: The vision more likely to be embraced if all stakeholders were represented when created. We need T & S voice in vision.
Yes, it must permeate up and down the system until the system becomes flat and the culture / vision becomes norm.
A4: Get a grp 2gether...what do u want 2 appear & disappear in ur culture...use info 2 establish who u r as a Schl community
Trying to create a COL in our HS library. It's been a tough shift for Ss who are used to compliance or step by step directions
Q5 Innovators engage and empower their learners. What does that look like in your classroom / building?
I agree. Less is more! https://t.co/yC7cKkAvJj
Need help with our shared vision. Too many initiatives and pulling Ts in too many directions. Need help with this.
Like I keep saying too many silos and not all working together making if harder for some of my favorite Ts
A4 Share inspiring stories; promote competitive collaboration as promoted by
A4: Is this where Ts need to lead? Are visions best started in classrooms with and by kids?
A4: Shared vision requires accepting dift perspectives, right? Do it by embracing diversity. You see? https://t.co/7bwFIeN00s
Yes, mission statement must live. I have been in too many districts where it doesn’t.
RT Q5 Innovators engage and empower their learners. What does that look like in your classroom / building?
We must require less, but encourage more. Let's the creativity flourish with . https://t.co/uMmAzS1PXm
Trying to create a COL in our HS library. It's been a tough shift for Ss who are used to compliance or step by step directions
A5: Giving them permission to take risks & try new things. Giving them ownership & support
A5: surveyed student body about changed to library; started a student advisory council; shared vision with PTA & admin
I was thinking, I'd share some of my own goals/vision first.
Break the mold!
https://t.co/imMv9nPLtS
A4: Sometimes innovators have to break the mold, or the rules, to make change.

A4: my classroom yes.. School& district no.. We are 3 TIMs in the district and provide tech workshops every week..l
Q5: S run everything, from morning meeting to book groups. They are in complete control and only 4th graders!
Always tough to step away from the gravitational pull of the status quo! https://t.co/AtKXkwyIuA
Trying to create a COL in our HS library. It's been a tough shift for Ss who are used to compliance or step by step directions
A5 Start conversations, encourage Ts to take risks and try something they have been wanting to do. Support!
A5: In the middle of conducting student focus groups about what they like/don't like about our school program. Great results so far

Make your mission statement come alive...revisit every year or sooner!
https://t.co/vzmUedAoOy
Yes, mission statement must live. I have been in too many districts where it doesn’t.
Rabbits = pests & are certainly nutritious rather than cuddly where i grew up. Canadian students couldn’t see this.
Difficult to align vision when individual teaching philosophy can be so different. Need to talk why school and build common phil.
A5: We also meet weekly in teams about our Ss & track interventions to better reach & understand what works for at risk Ss
A5: When your students create better activities than you have in your lesson plans, you know your doing something right.
True. But should it also build upon what innovative Ts are doing?
A4 Our Supt challenged us to start with Wonder, move to Discover, and then Learn & Grow. It's been foundation to all discussions
A5: I have 2 architect Ss leading the library redesign. They've developed awesome renderings to share with stakeholders
