Welcome to the #nt2t chat! Today’s topic is “ISTE Standards for Students.” Questions for today’s chat will be within each tweet and on the photo cards. For your reference as we move through this chat topic, here are details on @ISTE's 7 roles for students: https://t.co/UxGFoBKBWR
Glad to be your moderator this morning. If you'd like to follow me, open @JeremyDBond in a new Twitter window or as a new column if using TweetDeck. Please introduce yourself as you join us: Name, location, what you do! #nt2t
Hello! I'm Laurie from NY and I'm setting up for my session on Code in Every Class at the CSTA conference. I'll be hopping in and out of the chat. #nt2t
I'm a parent, communications manager for a Connecticut education agency, and an #nt2t moderator who saw chat co-founder and compatriot @shyj IN PERSON for the first time last week. I was in St. Louis for #DigCitWeekend.
Hi! I am originally from Sweeny, Texas and am currently a senior at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. I am completing my internship right now in a kindergarten classroom at CFE in Lockhart ISD! #nt2t

Here's an icebreaker if you'd like: What do you know about @ISTE? Your answer may be anywhere from "What's ISTE?" to "I submitted a proposal this week for #ISTE19 just before the deadline in the middle of the night." (We don't know anyone like that.) #nt2t
I'll post Question 1 shortly. We will be using Q1, A1, Q2, A2 (question 1/answer 1) format. Please include the A with the question number in your reply (A1, A2, etc.). You can also have side conversations or just say hello! Make sure all your tweets include the hashtag #nt2t.

A1: We need to teach our students to examine and explore online just like we do book walks in our classrooms. For older kids, we need to model and allow time for them to try in a safe environment. #NT2T
I've presented at ISTE 3 times. My fav part, besides the learning, is meeting all you wonderful tweeps in person! Love putting a voice to a tweet. #NT2t

Here we go with Question 1!
Q1) What can we do to help students become EMPOWERED LEARNERS? What are age appropriate tools, methods, and lessons for different grade levels?
Remember to include A1 and #nT2t in youre response!
Good Morning, my name is Jasmyne I currently live in PA, Im the women's Assistant basketball coach at Moravian college. Working on getting my Master's in Education. #Nt2t
That's not a problem, many know very little about ISTE. When you have a moment, take some time and look at the standards. They are pretty powerful. #NT2t
A1: We can help our students be empowered by giving them a digital literacy toolkit that will help them know how to handle ANY online situation. I am a huge fan of @joinbubble for elementary because it teaches proper online behavior and citizenship #nt2t#Nt2T
He is the best! Henry's product is offering elementary students an opportunity to learn proper behavior in a safe and monitored platform. @joinbubble is a game changer for our students. #NT2T
A1: Just the word "empower" means "give (someone) the authority or power to do something." Start by giving kids permission to be curious and question. No tools needed for that, but things like Padlet are great for getting questions documented. #NT2t
A1: most important thing I do when planning lessons is remind myself that I will always underestimate my Ss ability to own their learning. Then I plan for them to be in charge of more than I think is realistic. #nt2t
A1 First and foremost we give s’s opportunities to learn and explore in subjects/areas where they have interest. Leveraging the internet and community people/knowledge/platforms is key! #nt2t
A1: most important thing I do when planning lessons is remind myself that I will always underestimate my Ss ability to own their learning. Then I plan for them to be in charge of more than I think is realistic. #nt2t
My first year as a teacher I taught 12th grade AP Literature. A decade later, I’m certified to teach all grades and am currently teaching 2nd graders! How did it happen? I ask myself all the time. #nt2t
A1 Getting students to take charge of their learning and set their own learning goals can be challenging for teachers. It requires relinquishing control and giving more autonomy for the Ss. Can be very uncomfortable for teachers! #nt2t
Here we go with Question 1!

And this is tough to do! Realizing that you can trust kids to lead their learning is not an easy thing, congrats for reaching that point...some never do. #NT2t
This is a true challenge! I’ve seen some awesome t’s lately who provide students the needed structures and guidance for this. How much is appropriate will be based on the s’s experience with this. Starting with too much can be OK! #nt2t
A1: i think one thing that we can do to help empower our students is to give them choice, and we can do that by providing them with choices in online tools that will enhance their education. I’ve seen a lot of @Flocabulary and other tools like this used my internship class #nT2t
A1 help students feel empowered as learners by providing them with multiple ways to showcase their learning. Not all students learn the same why would they showcase their learning in the same way? #nt2t
Q2) Being a DIGITAL CITIZEN is an important part of all online communication. What is an effective way to help students understand what that means? #nt2t
A1: Letting students have the freedom to explore the online world. Programs like Google Apps/ Classroom gives students that freedom and independence, but also lets use as educators monitor their behavior. #nt2t
A1: For young learners, I think you need to help them understand "how" to learn first; how to frame questions, how to observe, how to look for connections, and make sure they understand it's okay to be curious and ask questions about everything (like a 2 year old) #NT2t
Starting by giving them too much is the best! My favorite thing to say is “I’m here. You’re not alone, so when you reach the point of needing help, let me know! I just want to see what you can do without me.” #nt2t
A1 help students feel empowered as learners by providing them with multiple ways to showcase their learning. Not all students learn the same why would they showcase their learning in the same way? #nt2t
Which is tricky because that can really mess with your lesson "plans" and curriculum mapping. Key is to see how their curiosities and interests fit into the curric, not the other way around. #NT2t
A2: Students need to learn how to be a good citizen in any situation. These are skills we work on in our classrooms all the time. It should be no different online. We just have to model and show students how. @joinbubble#nt2t
A2 helping students see the value and reach of technology will help them on their pathway of becoming good digital citizens. I don’t feel this is something that is covered in 1 lesson, 1 semester, or even 1 year. This is a life long lesson and commitment #nt2t
A2: Really think you need to show kids that being a "digital" citizen is just like being a "real life" citizen, just in an online format. The basic rules should be the same. #NT2t
A2: I like to do digital citizenship mini-lessons where I let Ss have conversation in a controlled online environment (like google classroom), then have them stand in front of the classroom and read the conversation out loud to each other in front of everyone. #nt2t
A2) Model digital citizenship by being open with tech in the classroom but oversee and guide them along the way. One of the ways NOT to help them understand is to ban and avoid tech. #DigCit#DigCitSummit#nt2t

A1 empowering learners is awesome! The learning impact can be and tremendous sustainability. It has to start first in the staff room as it’s a cultural decision for a whole school. Engaging all staff & parents on the journey can help to create a right supportive framework #nt2t
AMEN!!!! Once I told kids they just need to "show me what you know in any way you can" the whole world of learning opened up for many of my students. They just excelled afterwards. #NT2t

A2 Clear communication of expectations and then the upholding of the expectations. Expect limits to be probed/pushed; keep the line in the sand. Now is the time for students to learn these skills! #NT2t
Q3: Being a KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTOR can seem like a daunting task for students. What are baby step projects we can use to help them begin that long journey? #nt2t
A1: For young learners, I think you need to help them understand "how" to learn first; how to frame questions, how to observe, how to look for connections, and make sure they understand it's okay to be curious and ask questions about everything (like a 2 year old) #NT2t
YES! Don’t force a format unless you specifically need to assess the format itself. (Ex: essay) otherwisethe format doesn’t matter but can intimidate Ss into thinking they can’t...when in fact they CAN when given freedom to show you through their eyes. #nt2t
Started my yr with lessons on what/when/how of some basic tech skills. Want them to see the value in the tool & also know the expectations. Started with this instead of with don’t do this & don’t do that. Show the value of the tool not potential problems with the tool #nt2t
A2: Really think you need to show kids that being a "digital" citizen is just like being a "real life" citizen, just in an online format. The basic rules should be the same. #NT2t
A3 Give them access to quality resources in their school libraries. Give them access to a professional librarian that can help them on their knowledge quest. Stop expecting the to find it all on the internet or through the teacher. Help them to become independent #Nt2T
A3: Start like you do anything new, with small steps and build as they get comfortable. I like the #Hyperdocs format for introducing new material because it can be differentiated and students can work at their own pace. Plus it frees the teacher up to help those in need. #nt2t
I had an unusual experience when I was an undergrad in the 80's. I had one very "rogue" professor for most of my classes who was a staunch constructivist so I learned a ton from her. In other classes I had to practice writing clearly on the chalkboard. #NT2t
I think some think it's different because it can be anonymous or you are not there to see the reaction. They 'hide' behind the screen. We have to show that the impact is still happening. #Nt2t
A2: Really think you need to show kids that being a "digital" citizen is just like being a "real life" citizen, just in an online format. The basic rules should be the same. #NT2t
You can hide behind a screen and say what you like more easily. You need to think about what you say more fully if it is face to face. However it does empower those shy people to have a voice that they would otherwise not find. #Nt2T
The coolest thing ever was when a student who REALLY struggled started showing me what he knew through art. OMG!!! A whole new world of learning opened up for him and others were flocking to him to help them draw! Best thing ever! #NT2t
A2 💯👍🤜🤛 Blocking and banning restricts learning potential. Better to seek out safe and positive opportunities to give Ss the chance to practice and build their digital resilience and citizenship than banning all tech #nt2t
I think some think it's different because it can be anonymous or you are not there to see the reaction. They 'hide' behind the screen. We have to show that the impact is still happening. #Nt2t
A3: Learning journals! I have them@for each subject, where Ss can take notes during class, reflect on things they’ve learned, jot down questions or draw pictures, add info they research on their own. Teach them how to organize their learning so it’s always there. #nt2t
A3 let students be knowledge constructors of what they know or have an interest in first. Get them familiar with the process of it & not having to learn process and content at the same time. Then move to construction of new content and see how successful they are! #nt2t
A3: Before you construct knowledge you have to know how to question, and look at things from many perspectives. This is a skill that needs to be taught, practiced, and honed over time. #NT2t
I love this idea!! Growing up I always wanted to know the why, "why are we doing this?" I was constantly thinking to myself what am I going to get out of learning this. Showing your students the value of any lesson or skill can go along way #nt2t
Started my yr with lessons on what/when/how of some basic tech skills. Want them to see the value in the tool & also know the expectations. Started with this instead of with don’t do this & don’t do that. Show the value of the tool not potential problems with the tool #nt2t
Because it’s all new territory for all of us. We don’t know how to model and what is ok and what is not. We were not taught in a globally connected classroom. #nt2t
The coolest thing ever was when a student who REALLY struggled started showing me what he knew through art. OMG!!! A whole new world of learning opened up for him and others were flocking to him to help them draw! Best thing ever! #NT2t
I always imagine what difference it would have made for me, voted the Quietest (male) in my graduating class. One reason I feel so passionate about this. #DigCit#nt2t
You can hide behind a screen and say what you like more easily. You need to think about what you say more fully if it is face to face. However it does empower those shy people to have a voice that they would otherwise not find. #Nt2T
Q4) The future will require INNOVATIVE DESIGNERS and COMPUTATIONAL THINKERS. How do we prepare students for jobs that don’t even exist yet, and solve problems that haven’t been created? #nt2t
That's why teachers need to reach out for support from experts who do know. School librarians are a great place to start for a conversation about supporting within your classroom. #Nt2T
A3 cont: I have done them online and on paper. If you need an interactive google slides notebook, DM me! Happy to share what has been shared with me and bettered my classroom! #nt2t
Tech IS a tool. We have to stop thinking of it as something different. It's not a babysitter, a distractor, or a gaming device in the classroom. It's the noun that matters...tool. We have to use it for expanding our learning, empowering students to want to learn. #Nt2T
LOVE the idea of having a journal! It gives students the freedom to write what THEY think about something that they have learned in class and how they interpret it. & it’s a great tool for learning how to be an effective organizer #nt2t
A3: Learning journals! I have them@for each subject, where Ss can take notes during class, reflect on things they’ve learned, jot down questions or draw pictures, add info they research on their own. Teach them how to organize their learning so it’s always there. #nt2t
After a while, when kids are familiar with tools, you can turn it around. Identify the "what/why" of our task and ask them to identify which tool is available to help meet our needs. #NT2t
I personally found my voice via blogging and twitter. Without those I would never have presented at conferences or had my articles published. There is good and bad in every walk of life... #Nt2T
A3 Present something in a manner that elicits student curiosity/questioning. As a t I knew I nailed it when I did the can crush. Students began asking all sorts of questions. I then let them explore the scenarios. https://t.co/qhB6BhCRpK#nt2t
A3 I think it starts having a more scaffold approach with the teacher moving in and out during the beginning, but as the students grow and become more comfortable and become better aware of the material we can take a step back and lean towards a more independent approach #nt2t
And let's keep "behave" in quotes, because there are other ways to describe how we are and how we treat people. Common decency over compliance. Acceptance over judgment. #PeopleSkills#nt2t
A4: stop teaching kids to mastery a thing, and encourage them to critically think/consider/analyze instead. This way they have the mind tools to master anything, instead of an outdated memory of one thing. #nt2t
Great question although I’ve seen a few places try to integrate pbl of their t’s needed a foundation in a variety of other methodologies to be successful. #nt2t
Yes you are so right! students need to see other doing it well. Just like improved literacy through reading models we can improve digital use through demonstrating good practice. #Nt2T

A4: Teachers have always been preparing kids for jobs that don't necessarily exist. Helping kids to learn how to ask questions, identify problems, look at probs from different perspectives, brainstorm solutions, etc are great ways to begin. #NT2t
A4: We prepare students by teaching them skills that will be beneficial in any job i.e. responsibility, hard work, communication (online and in person), manners, how to be a learner that is always hungry for more knowledge!! #nt2t
Exactly. Many students are coming to you knowing there is one way to do things correctly. Gotta break that mindset! Encourage kids to take risks, fail, and try again! #NT2t
Yeah...I would love to get beyond mentioning to a full immersion. Don't think that happens very often. Also think many of those teaching undergrads don't understand PBL itself beyond what they have read. #NT2t
A4 in preparing Ss for jobs that don’t exist we need to teach them how to take risks. It can’t be about the regurgitation of information any longer. They MUST create! Move away from a one size fits all assessment to something that meets the needs of our Ss & their future #nt2t
Start the year by making an anchor chart: “How can I share what I’ve learned?” and have Ss come up with answers. Throughout the yr, if someone finds a new way, make a big thing of it, announce it to the class, add it to the chart, give an “INNOVATION IN LEARNING” award! #nt2t
Sorry I’ve got to disappear everyone - have an awesome day. Thanks for the awesome chat and for the love for @joinbubble#nt2t Am needed for Daddy duties #RoccoTime Thanks @JeremyDBond for hosting 👋 chat soon 😊
Q5: Helping students to be CREATIVE COMMUNICATORS is a vital skill, online and offline. How do we use technology to help students accomplish this? Should we always use technology? #nt2t
The trick is that even if we offer suggestions of how Ss can show what they know they often see it as a list they need to choose from. We need to get them out of that mindset & realize there are endless possibilities to showcase their learning & then we create life long learners
Yes! It is so important to teach those life skills, but often hard to find ways to incorporate those into a rigorous academic schedule, especially for the young ones who need to start learning it most and for new teachers trying to find their footing. #Nt2T
I’ve learned that Ss take more ownership of their journal when they learn it’s theirs to use as needed to help them further their learning. Tests? Research projects? Conversations? They have tools to help them, tools they made—great ownership of learning. #nt2t
I have a doc of ways to show what you know that I used when I was planning. Always made sure kids could use lots of ways on my doc. If they couldn't, then my plans were too narrow. #NT2t
A5: I hosted a workshop called Visual Literacy. Those that went said they see the value in teaching it to their students. Next time I'll call it creative communication because it helps us understand the importance. #nt2t
Sometimes it is through making a connection with another school via Hangout. Share a book that you were going to read anyway and instead of having a class discussion you have another class listening in and giving their thoughts too. You are teaching literacy and digital too #Nt2T
A5: First and foremost, don't start with the tool. Look at what needs to be communicated and the best method to do so. THEN...look at your tools and see what fits the need. It might not be a tool at all! #NT2t
A4: Being able to find a student's talents and build off that. looking at each individual student as a whole and using a more student-centered approach. Letting students learn with hands-on experience, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. #nt2t
A5: To foster creative communicators, offer multiple tools for creation: Google Slides, Smore, Canva, Powtoon, etc. but technology should only be used if the outcome is more efficient, robust, and engaging than without it. #nt2t
Q5: Helping students to be CREATIVE COMMUNICATORS is a vital skill, online and offline. How do we use technology to help students accomplish this? Should we always use technology? #nt2t
I personally found my voice via blogging and twitter. Without those I would never have presented at conferences or had my articles published. There is good and bad in every walk of life... #Nt2T
When I taught 6th, students would fold over pages they didn't want me to read. That way they decided what they would and would not share. It helped them learn public vs private basics. #nt2t
A5: remember that pen and paper is as much technology as an iPad. Teach communication across time! “2day we are in the 1700s England. What tools can we use to communicate?” “2day we’re in 3015 US! What tools have been invented for us to use now?” #nt2t

If I never celebrated my failures, just my successes, I wouldn't be celebrating very often! 🤣 We need to teach kids that failure really is "first attempt in learning" and that you need to take what you learned & try again! #NT2t
In reply to
@MrsKGutierrez3, @mrstfrazier, @MsCSLow
A5 It is not about what tech you use as this changes all the time it is always about the learning outcomes. If tech does not add anything then stick with paper and pen. #nt2t
They are totally confidential! Only I or student can see them. It’s important to teach that same rules apply online as off. Confidentiality, plagiarism, etc. it still matters. #nt2t
Absolutely. All you can do is talk about the impact on yourself they really have to do this journey because they are interested and want to know more. Not because they have been told to. #nt2t

Yes! Celebrate failures! I used to give bonus points to students if they found mistakes in my work. It reminded them that we all make mistakes, we are all a work in progress. #nt2t

@shyj, @MrsKGutierrez3, @mrstfrazier, @MsCSLow
A4: Preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist means we have to move away from a “recipe” heavy on “plug-and-chug” problems and move towards lessons with choice, creativity, and new tools. #nt2t#edtech
LOVE the idea of having a journal! It gives students the freedom to write what THEY think about something that they have learned in class and how they interpret it. & it’s a great tool for learning how to be an effective organizer #nt2t

Q6) The world is getting smaller, and most collaborations are becoming global. How do we give students opportunities to be GLOBAL COLLABORATORS while they are still in school? #nt2t
A5 Technology is important to use when it can help provide different paths/options for s’s. However it isn’t the end all be all and I don’t believe it is always the answer. It is one tool. #nt2t
A5: I don't think we should always use technology but it is becoming a big part of society. I believe we have to teach student different methods of technology by teaching the skills that the new tools require for it. #nt2t
A5 technology needs to stop being talked of as a separate entity to learning. They go hand in hand. To be creative communicators Ss need to see the connection of what they are doing to how they will communicate their goal. If thought of as separate there is no carry over #nt2t
YES! Each week I call out Great Mistakes and reward the students that made them. The class cheers and we discuss how they fixed them or learned from them. It’s awesome and shows wwe have a safe space to fumble and fall without negative judgment. #nt2t
Absolutely. All you can do is talk about the impact on yourself they really have to do this journey because they are interested and want to know more. Not because they have been told to. #nt2t
A6: Please do NOT throw kids into any social media tool before you have discussed and practiced what it means to be a dig citizen. Those skills are a must before they start interacting with others in platforms like @joinbubble#NT2t
A6: Global Opportunities for our students can be
#MysterySkype#GlobalKahoot@joinbubble
Have an expert or an author skype into your classroom. Join online global outreach programs. Connect with another classroom on projects. The list goes on and on!
#nt2t
A6 There are so many ways. Google Hangout (mystery hangout, monster hangout, number hangout) or Skype, Padlet and Flipgrid can open the door to wonderful learning. I have watched amazing things happen in a connected classroom. #nt2t
A5: I think helping students to be creative communicators includes both the use of technology but also skills taught in person. Just like anything it is a balance. #nt2t
YES! Each week I call out Great Mistakes and reward the students that made them. The class cheers and we discuss how they fixed them or learned from them. It’s awesome and shows wwe have a safe space to fumble and fall without negative judgment. #nt2t
Great question! I’d say you hit the nail on the head: trial and error. I make notes for next year, or even next period (ex. this brainstorming session should have taken place at their pods, no computers. Or this could have been a paper and pencil activity instead of digital)
A6: your classroom is only as small as you make it. We have too much technology to not invite the world in and share with it. Zoom, Skype, google Hangouts, e-mail, pen pals, PLNs...reminder: if you’re not a global learner, you won’t know how to teach it to them. #nt2t

I know some teachers who have kids share their answers and the task is to find the "best mistake" a student had and figure out their thinking behind their answer. #NT2t

A6 show Ss how to be global collaborators by at 1st making connections 4 them through mystery chats & online field trips. Have them create their own web sites to showcase their work to a larger audience & show them the power of the connections you have made #nt2t
A5: It depends on the tools we us and what goals we are setting for our student. We want to teach those skills but set the propose to what we our student will takeaway from it. Also, just because the technology is there does not mean we have to throw it at our students. #nt2t
Tech IS a tool. We have to stop thinking of it as something different. It's not a babysitter, a distractor, or a gaming device in the classroom. It's the noun that matters...tool. We have to use it for expanding our learning, empowering students to want to learn. #Nt2T
Balance is absolutely key, especially in today's world (geez...I'm sounding like my parents). In a world where people are so connected, but are feeling the most isolated at the same time...we need balance. #NT2t
A6: Please do NOT throw kids into any social media tool before you have discussed and practiced what it means to be a dig citizen. Those skills are a must before they start interacting with others in platforms like @joinbubble#NT2t
Part of the modeling of digital citizenship and digital literacy is the learning itself. In other words, if you're still learning what you're modeling, you're modeling learning! #DigCit#nt2t
Because it’s all new territory for all of us. We don’t know how to model and what is ok and what is not. We were not taught in a globally connected classroom. #nt2t
Yes...often the technology naysayers and the technology enthusiasts are two extremes, when really there is a happy balance between the physical and the virtual. We just need to find it! #Nt2T
This week’s challenge, for now or any time this week!:
Share a pic of your class of ISTE learners preparing for the future. Include #nt2t in your post.
