Q1: Who should set the tone/climate/culture of the school?
-
-
A1: Compare and contrast who "should" with who "does." We all contribute, purposefully or inadvertently.
-
Q1: RT Q1: Who should set the tone/climate/culture of the school?
-
A1 The site leaders should set the tone/culture/climate of the school for staff/fac, parents, and students.
-
Good evening all from PA. I think something is wrong with this Twitter feed but will give it a whirl...
-
-
Prof Susan in IL able to join this week. Greetings to all.
-
Hi , I am kicking around. Interesting topic. Leslie in Mty, MX.
-
Hi Debra! Oh no! Hope it works tonight!
-
Uh oh...is Twitter acting "funny" again??
-
A1: Teachers, parents, administrators, community members should work together to set the culture of the school.
-
I'm livin' the dream, Sara! :)
-
A1:everyone plays a part but strong leadership trickles down.
-
I wonder if b/c I put out the invites I am being limited on my tweets. Thoughts about this?
-
A1: I believe anyone from can. But, the trickle down from admin is the best to set school-wide tone
-
Just getting in the door tonight. I'm cathing up! Rob from Northern CA! AKA
-
-
-
Hi . Hope you are well. Tweets again not coming through but am hanging in to see...
-
Good to have my co-pilot on board!
-
Haha. I am sure that you are not. I have seen both sides of school culture, that was my meaning! :D
-
-
-
Everybody funny. Hi Spiri!
-
A1 Yes, top leadership sets the direction of the whole school & provides PD to help all get on board.
-
Hmmm...I wonder if b/c I put out a lot of invites I am being limited on my tweets. Thoughts about this?
-
Good to have you join in!!!
-
. Do they decide to set the culture or do their actions in other matters set it for them?
-
A1: School administrators
-
-
Your catch up list consists of precisely one item. You should be fine!
-
A1: While not exactly the same, looking forward to District Mission/Vision workshop next week. Proud parents filled up first!
-
: A1. Culture is everyone's responsibility within the school ecosystem. It works only when all speak and walk the same.π
-
Last few days, knocked off Twitter w it crashing.Never had that problem bef. Happen to anyone else? https://t.co/1cVQPFx2Bs
-
-
Uh oh...is Twitter acting "funny" again??
-
Here's an interesting question...
-
***Q2: When you walk into the main office of a school, what do you want to see or feel?
-
Q2: RT: When you walk into the main office of a school, what do you want to see or feel?
-
-
A1. All educators hold a responsibility to build a positive, encouraging school culture!
-
It has frozen my screen a few times for a very long time each time, but no crashing as yet.
-
A2 Should be friendly, warm, and I should see happy helpful staff! Stud work displayed, accolades, goals.
-
Hang in there!!! resilience, resilience, resilience ;)
-
A1: Even though teachers & students have voices that need to be heard in a school, it's the principal who sets the tone.
-
-
Ditto. And few things coming through.
-
A2: I want to see smiling people who say, "Hi there, how are you?" I want to feel like I am not a total PITA for being there
-
Hmmm...hopefully it will get better....
-
A2:student work, inspiration, and an overall feeling if https://t.co/uPEWBkz6Oo would be great too, like coming into a home.
-
A2: A warm welcome and a smile. And if there isn't one there, I bring it in. π
-
Yes, that's why I didn't just shut it down, I engaged my resilience and waited! heh
-
A1. I think the culture should be set by all of the adults, but starting with staff buy in is a good first step.
-
A2: See positive people, feel welcomed, friendly greeting, smiling faces, helpful people, welcoming environment
-
Yes...and hopefully it will rub off on to others...
-
-
A2: The main office of a school should feel bright, alive & busy with staff, teachers, parent volunteers & administrators.
-
A2 You can tell within the first 30 seconds what the school climate is. I want to see smiles, hear laughter and conversation
-
I love the part of volunteers!
-
A1: Firm believer it starts at the top & trickles down to Ts, Ss & Ps. Ldrs can't maintain it alone. https://t.co/yAVJSxsygs
-
-
Q1: Who should set the tone/climate/culture of the school?
-
A2. A sense of purpose. Visibility of student work. A positive greeting. A lack of clutter. A sense of the organization.
-
A2a: I need to b greeted by someone who's inviting, friendly and honestly helpful (usually para)..
-
:A2 See the children, feel their laughter & get absorbed in their world. The office & Admn must be the last I wish to see ππ¬π«
-
Yes, I equate it to the first seconds of an interview.

Getting more specific with question 3...
-
Q2: RT: When you walk into the main office of a school, what do you want to see or feel?
-
***Q3: What would you identify as the most important role/job of the principal?
-
Yes, I like that options too, but it seems very hard to authentically implement. Success where you are?
-
A2b: the first person I see also needs to look professional. They ARE my first impression of the school
-
Tom from NJ popping in. A1: Climate comes from every aspect of the building, but is embodied by the leadership
-
Perhaps Tweetdeck can offer respite?
-
A 2. Happy sounds n vibes. You can feel the energy as soon as you enter a school
-
Q3. What would you identify as the most important role/job of the principal?
-
Yup. I agree about the first impression--whether we realize or not it does have an influence on us.
-
A2: Warm welcome - hello, smile, offer of assistance. And artwork or similar by the kids.
-
A2: Can't redo 1st impressions. Critical main office feels warm & inviting. Staff/Ss interactions + https://t.co/3xmoqojmWu
-
-
***Q2: When you walk into the main office of a school, what do you want to see or feel?

That's a tall order, professor! Sounds great though! https://t.co/Ulbhx0FJDp

Q2: RT: When you walk into the main office of a school, what do you want to see or feel?
-
Good to have you here, Naghma!
-
A2. I also want to see kids being treated respectfully. You know how sometimes things are said with observers present?
-
-
A3: Set a positive leadership tone. Encourage collaboration & communication. Be a "safety" for the kids.
-
A3:Encourage and model positive collaboration and communication.
-
LOVE that you mentioned feng shui!! The decor can be a huge distraction/turn off.
-
Thought it was my phone that was the problem
-
For sure! Kids also see how office personnel interact with each other!
-
A3: ensure everyone is learning!
-
Okay, so we sound like we are at the same place then. Change is hard, especially for adults!
-
A 3. to inspire without barging in your space. It starts from the top.
-
Q3. Modeling and reinforcing the tone. Setting high expectations for office staff. Having crucial conversations when needed.
-
A3 Only one?! Instr. ldrshp; which includes a host of responsibilities...capacity bldg, accountability, team bldg, etc
-
A2: The most important thing to feel is welcomed, then a sense of respect everyone has for each other's work
-
No, something happens with this particular chat. Cannot understand why.
-
-
Yes, crucial conversations that often aren't that fun or easy but necessary.
-
A3: Role model for teachers. Set the bar high. Be professional, and love those kids! π
-
Touche! Welcome, Dr. Tom!
-
A3: Holding the line on reliability, integrity, and support of agreed-upon mission and vision. Believing in it transparently
-
A3: Principals should be role-models, and create environments where everyone (Ts&Ss) want to learn
-
Really!! I am trying not to take it personally!! ;)
-
-
Hee hee. He didn't say just one. I always take liberties! I can list lots of "mosts."
-
There you have it, , might be the Bermuda Triangle of chats!
-
Don't Sara. It has to be some tech issue but it happens regularly.
-
-
-
Popped in late. Faige in LA & saw this. YES welcomed & respect. Then we go from there https://t.co/6HsP9FGmuX

-
I am lovin' the support!!!
-
-
Good. Far better than stressing out about it. We're here for you. :-)
-
A3:Lead Ts to reevaluate thinking, promote collaboration, support new/creative ideas for teaching Ss & learning!
-
Always a treat to have you here in , Faige!
-
Good! It's not every day I get to make a TED speaker chuckle. I relish this!
-
So true! They are the moral compass of the school!
-
-
Speaking of principals...
-
Yes, and I am learning this by observing. A fly on the wall knows a lot!
-
Q4: Is there a way to restructure the role of principal so that he/she can focus more on inst. ldshp rather than operations?
-
I LOVE being the fly on the wall!
-
Hi Tom! This is spot on! Everyone is contributed to culture but the Ldrs set the tone!
-
A3: Modeling restorative justice methods when dealing with challenging students and disrupting institutionalized racism!
-
A4: Open eyes on this. It seems like calendars are booked solid with the latter leaving no time for the former. :(
-
YES! YES! YES! I am all for restorative justice!
-
Q4: Is there a way to restructure the role of principal so that he/she can focus more on inst. ldshp rather than operations?
-
So much can be learned by watching & listening!
-
The most imp role of the principal SHOULD be the principal T/lead learner. S/he should also model service to the ed comm
-
My skills as a scientist are very helpful in this regard. Good old transferrable skills!

Q3. What would you identify as the most important role/job of the principal?
-
Yes, yet so many principals get overwhelmed with the ops side of things. Can this be restructured?
-
A4 Site leaders could delegate certain resp. to other staff experts, so they can focus on Instr leadership.
-
A4. You have to focus every day on finding the time to be instructional leader, setting expectations, accountability. That's
-
-
Do you see this happening a lot? The delegating???
-
Yes, please? https://t.co/eYkcTXjoZO

Q3. What would you identify as the most important role/job of the principal?
-
A4. Making sure office staff knows classroom time is a priority. Avoid interruptions.
-
A4: Hard question, have to manage time well, put off tasks for after school that take away your time from classrooms
-
A4:Empower others by giving them opportunity to lead! Admin can't do everything nor should they try. https://t.co/4dLlkQS51v
-
-
Q4: Is there a way to restructure the role of principal so that he/she can focus more on inst. ldshp rather than operations?
-
Principals need to delegate non-leadership tasks and dedicate time to build community. Leadership vs mgmt.
-
Interruptions definitely need to be minimized. Great point!
-
A4: She who delegates best...well, everyone wins. Delegating might be more difficult than listening.
-
:A4:Restructure their responsibility to take ownership for teachers producing average results in the subjects they teach.π
-
I totally agree and am quite interested in seeing models that have been implemented in schools.
-
A4 Share role Leaders know that it takes a village. Surround yourself w/ppl who help carry the load. https://t.co/OX4pGXX7oY
-
-
Q4: Is there a way to restructure the role of principal so that he/she can focus more on inst. ldshp rather than operations?
-
-
-
A4: maybe district admin can take this role? I often wonder about this Q, with pity-Prncpls are so busy!
-
A4. If the collective of educators value instruction, coaching, improvement, then all can work to increase these priorities
-
A4: Well, in order for principals to free up some of their time, they'd have to find ways to delegate & demonstrate trust.
-
I know principal friends who have achieved this. It took work & isn't perfect. Something to strive for.
-
I think that trust is a big issue
-
Delegating means letting go (of control). Not easy in classroom or boardroom
-
. Delegating teacher growth or teacher evaluation or both? , what do you think about this?
-
A3 Ensure all are learning, incl all Ts, Ss, admins & staff. Culture of learning that embraces all. https://t.co/BRPXHvC7mC
-
-
A3: ensure everyone is learning!
-
A4:Work longer! J/K. Not enough hrs in day, but w/social media, Ps could post blog about instr ldrship for Ts, lead chats
-
I'd love to know more. I am actually working with a school to implement a new model.
-
I know, I saw some amazing schools in the Bay area recently during ! Mind blown!
-
I have been involved in successful "peer evaluation" models.
-
Yes, but sometimes if you build it, they still don't come. for Ts is tricky.
-
I'm in the Bay Area!!! You were here????
-
Next question coming your way....
-
Evaluative? Linked to T pay? Development/growth promoted via same system or different one?
-
Ouch on that JK!!!!! https://t.co/10hhXBv8kt
-
-

Q5: What suggestions can you offer re: structure/organization of schools so they can do more w/ the resources they have?
-
I've never heard of this- I need to read up, and present to my P. https://t.co/jhXTTkCX0H
-
-
I know, I saw some amazing schools in the Bay area recently during ! Mind blown!
-
Was integrated into the full eval. that was more traditional.
-
We need that Control Freak Monkey off our backs. Admin, principals, leaders need to reflect also
-
YES! Reflection is key. Getting rid of the monkey is a must! ;)
-
Q5: What suggestions can you offer re: structure/organization of schools so they can do more w/ the resources they have?
-
A4 - Not to state the obvious, but isn't that why you have Assistant Principals? To free up the Principal?
-
Why do I see no posts from Sara? Am I only seeing certain posts?
-
A5: collaborate w/focus on logistics. Bring in ideas and create action plans
-
-
If one uses the Ass't Principal effectively. Not all Ass't Principals do the same things.
-
A5 Leverage strengths of others--fac/parents/studs/comm. Build trust. Collaborate. Create a team of innovators. Inspire.
-
-
Finally seated at rally. Waving to folks
-
love this & saw implemented at my school. Built on trust is major 4this 2work
-
Waving right back at 'cha Debbie!!!
-
A4 - I also think it is about priorities ... observing and working with teachers ... or no ...
-
W/18 elementary schools we have five with AP's. And we also want them to be instructional leaders. https://t.co/bIYvHTG5Ed
-
-
A4 - Not to state the obvious, but isn't that why you have Assistant Principals? To free up the Principal?
-
A5: 1st, and foremost KNOW what resources there are-I'm always finding new ones https://t.co/jrKmg3ljQ1
-
-
Q5: What suggestions can you offer re: structure/organization of schools so they can do more w/ the resources they have?
-
A5: Programming, comm/family engagement, less testing, PTA over here!
-
A5. What resources are needed? Why? The principal justified well, I'd find the funds.
-
oh my goodness- only 5 have APs?!?!?
-
AP should be focused on different part of Admin ... Discipline/Curric/Facilities ... Principal lead
-
Me too! I met up with , but he was the only one of my Twitter I could muster at !
-
Saying goodnight all since I don't seem to be getting tweets. No worries . Will try again.
-
Couldn't have said it better!
-
A5:Parent volunteers & student leaders can help w/some things which can free up extra time for Ts/staff
-
Next time!!! Sorry about tonight's Twitterfeed.
-
-
A5: Any suggestions I could make I will make F2F and not here. I prefer not to get school-specific here.
-
yes, but as a team they do free up each other ... the AP are delegates of the Principal
-
A5 Need strong efficient open lines of communication thru out school vertical horizontal circular https://t.co/ggJ1JRhA5S
-
-
Q5: What suggestions can you offer re: structure/organization of schools so they can do more w/ the resources they have?
-
.Q6: What's the most innovative thing you have seen implemented at a school? This could be ANYTHING-sched,org,testing,etc.
-
at my school we have Principal and 2 APs ... we are PreK-8 ... about 800 kids
-
Glad I could stay awhile. Have a great week.
-
please do read about using restorative justice in schools. It can make an amazing difference. https://t.co/K3wEZ1xgN9
-
-
YES! YES! YES! I am all for restorative justice!
-
A5: Go digital, use technology and apply flip class model. Have a day of class with parents too πin the class too.
-
Off to bathe twins. Night!
-
A6: Mindful Minutes (medication in Health Class), 30 minutes Yoga before core classes, DRAP Drop Everything and Read
-
I totally agree. I worked at a Continuation School in Oakland that had a res. just. counselor on site all day.
-
A5 - Actually use the resources you have ... too often there are resources shoved in closets not being used.
-
-
RTQ6: What's the most innovative thing you have seen impl. at a school? ANYTHING-sched,org,testing,etc.
-
Love having the parents in the classroom! I would do that for the first 15 mins of each day.
-
at the beginning of the year all the tech should be laid out and teachers should walk through and see what is available.
-
-
-
I also would invite parents in for story time. I think they enjoyed hearing the storybooks as much as the kids!
-
A6 AG! One of our K-8 schools has an Agri theme--chickens, gardens, sun dial, etc. = relevant instr for learners!
-
oh yes. Smart boards are barely used by Ts who have them in many schools- bc Ts r untrained
-
Late for A6 Teacher led PD- grade level choice of class and schedule
-
-
I'm not either- I go to her main page to see them..
-
Hey Mark! Good to see you!
-
-
Okay, friends...last question as usual... let's put tonight into action...
-
Q7: What will you do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
-
How many Ss in elem schools with AP? https://t.co/65IvVz7kxM
-
-

-
One thing I'm going to do is try to find out why my tweets don't always show up for some! ;)
-
A6: ACTIVE ENJOYABLE team building during professional dev days (bowling, ropes course, etc)
-
A6 with tech- full ready for next year and elearning days and flex days. Creation and curation of content!
-
we should recognize that regardless of the sales pitch...smartboards don't work in every learning environment
-
-
A7 I will be scheduling another day to visit a diff School site and shadow a P and check out innovations and Instr ldrshp.
-
Okay, tweeps, I used the word innovating when I meant innovative. Time for a Twitter recess. https://t.co/BMAdb45O6L
-
As always, love my Mondays with such a great PLN on Thanks all, for your participation. Spread the word!
-
I took mine of the wall and replaced it with an 8ft screen ... that was more effective for my class
-
Q7: What will you do tomorrow as a result of tonight?
-
A6b: Our district also implemented 1 half day each month for school PD- whatever the principal's choose
-
A7: Let principal know how much I admire specific their leadership qualities.
-
Thanks to moderators & all for a great chat. So sorry a few of us had tech problems. Will look into it. Best to all.
-
I want chickens at our school!
