Welcome everybody, just some basic info, questions will be in Q and A format respond with A and the question number and be sure to include #espechat in all your replies.
Part1-Sometimes when you have a half a gym due to Holiday Concert, you have to keep it simple! Ss had a blast with this and once they got the hang of it there was very limited standing time! Step in if you see Ss standing for more than 30secs! #physed#warmup#espechat Prt 2 OTW
A1) Matt from Southern California checking into #ESPEchat this evening! I've become quite fond on hiking/walking and would love to get my own kayak at some point!
Q1: Introduce yourself, where are you from, and what is your favorite lifelong activity? #espechat
I'm Jamie West from Linden, North Carolina. My favorite lifelong activity is hiking in our beautiful state parks. And any activity that involves water!
Hey Seth! Matt from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. My favourite lifelong activity is a split between hockey (still play "old-timers" Saturday mornings) & baseball (slo-pitch in the summers) #espechat
Kalie McKinley Jeffersonville, Indiana. I teach HS PE in Louisville, KY. I love stand up paddle boarding the most! I am starting a paddle club for high schooler to train for SUP races #espechat
Q2: Define briefly what lifelong activities and individual pursuits are in a #physed setting. Why are these vital to include in your classes? #espechat
A1) Derrick Biehl from Chicagoland Illinois checking in, and I LOVE to play some basketball. I've also gotten big into obstacle races such as #spartan races! #ESPEchat
A2) My hope is that my students learn 2 things from my class. 1. Movement and play is essential for a lifetime of health and happiness. 2. Humor is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. #espechat

A2: Personal workouts/exercising, specific love of sports/games/skills - some Ss would be good at sports while others would be good at individual pursuits like juggling #espechat
A2:Individual Pursuits are activities in which participants work individually w/ town equipment and monitor their own behaviour. Lifelong physical activities are Lifelong physical activity involves participating in a range of physical activities (e.g. competitive/non #espechat
A2 surfing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, swimming, fitness camping, and survival wilderness. Why are those all important because they are all activities that bridge the gap between HS PE and outdoor recreation! #espechat
#espechat
A2: @smartintahoe Lifelong activities should be activites you can pursue at all points in life. It is vital to include these because s's will most likely not be playing competitive sports after age 25. Show students things they can do outside of competitive sports.
A2 I also love biking and won a Specialized Foundation grant for bikes at my school. It has been awesome introducing kids to bikes who have never ridden before. #espechat
A2) something that kids will ACTUALLY do outside of school. Once you're in your mid 20s most of us are done playing team sports. Giving kids simple skills that apply to moderate exercise they find enjoyable is key. #ESPEchat
A1 Hi @smartintahoe 👋🏼!! I’m Stephanie Sandino from Southern California 🙂 and my favorite lifelong activity is probably running, but I just like to move in general so I’m game for a lot of things! #ESPEchat
A2: Lifelong persuits should also include activities they are interested in. Getting students to explore different lifelong activities gives them a library of games/exercises they can apply at all points of life. #espechat
A2) feel as though several racquet activities/sports have been on the decline for a long time; miss tennis, paddle tennis and racquetball...never played squash; however, feel striking activities is a dying skill in PE #espechat
Physical activity has become a business. One of my largest frustrations as a supervisor was teachers who would not run an intramural unless they got paid. Intramurals at no cost, esp before school are vital. #espechat
We definitely need to be advocates for access for our students. Believe it or not most businesses will partner and help get kids in their facilities and doing their sports. #espechat
A3: Hiking field trips, geocaching, HR monitoring, "backyard games", low/no equipment games. Exploring our area with kids. I usually teach and we explore with our tech facilitator. #espechat
A3) Some of our faves at Perkett: Golf, yoga, run club and dance. I want to start a skating unit since I have a rink about 20 feet from our school. Biking would be another I want to start too. Looking for a grant for bikes...any suggestions/ideas? #espechat
A2 Lifelong activities and individual pursuits are the activities that are a part of the red rubber ball journey, the ones that bring you joy, the ones you can get after whether you’re a ms ss or 80 years old 1/2 #ESPEchat
A3: Curling - Rocks & Rings came in, Golfing - do an annual Gr. 8 trip, Downhill Skiing - do an annual Grade 5-8 trip at a local ski hill, Run Club during nice weather/indoors during winter; would love to include racquet games such as squash #espechat
A3: my s's Disc gol, slackline, cross country ski, snowshoe, get at least 3 days of ski or snowboard instruction, professionally provided swim instruction, and access to the skate arena. We are a title 1 school but take advantage of our awesome communities generosity. #espechat
A3) Pickleball has to be my favorite lifelong activity to teach!. I show my Ss the world championship highlights each year to kick off the unit and the age brackets/national champions always surprise them! Sparks great discussion of LIFELONG activity! #espechat#physed
A3: I’ve done spikeball, badminton, yoga, Zumba, weight training and golf. I’m hoping to do an outdoor hiking unit as a “field trip” as well. #ESPEChat
#espechat A3 Last year I tried to implement frisbee activities like ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf, and can jam. I really want to get Ss to go to a frisbee golf course near our school to test it out!
I teach them all myself. I take courses in the summer, participate in SUP races, and ask experts during that time. I turn their information into PE terms. I take my students on field trips to participate in our community. #espechat
A3) Dance, Adventure Challenge, Backyard games, Gymnastics, last year I taught an entire traverse wall unit. I feel like you can point out certain aspects of most units that can translate to how it will help with a life skill or how to work it into a lifelong activity. #espechat
A3: ...and in a #skillsbasedhealthed lens; teaching kids to dance in a crowded area without touching others is a great skill to have in a club and a great introduction to #consent#espechat
Disc Golf also! Love bringing in my Frolf discs for them to check out and toss around. If I was secondary I would loveee to take a field trip to a local course! Anyone do that? #espechat
A2 They are vital because we def have to adapt to the curve balls life throws at us & move in ways that will benefit our person. If you’ve played ⚽️ all your life & have a bum knee, you’ll have to adjust & morph your 🔴into a different activity that makes you 🙂 2/2 #ESPEchat
A3: We did a freshmen team building day where we did a 3 mile hike at a local Mtn biking area and team building games. Fun introducing the kids to a new experience. Kids enjoyed it more than I thought they would. #espechat
A3: I've started to include Circus Arts (juggling, etc.), Ultimate, Dance, Gymnastics, Yoga to make it broader & see Ss who react positively to certain ones that don't react positively to others #espechat
A4: I want to add climbing and cycling. I need equipment and space. I can't ask for bikes since I have no place to store them. Right now working on adding storage space so I can pursue that. #espechat
A4) Definitely would love to add scooters, skates, or bikes. I honestly just wouldn't know where to start. Also really want to do Golf (put put.) #espechat
A4) I'm always looking for unique things that my Ss don't have access to. I'd love to do something water related but not sure if I would get permission and/or funds for it. I'd like to get bowling equipment and make it a bigger part of our curriculum. #espechat
I tried asking for that but was shot down by district for liablity reasons. I even got to the point of talking to the lawyers and insurance people. #espechat
A4) I would love to do a comprehensive backpacking unit with a culminating weekend backpacking trip. The obstacles include but are not limited to...funding, equipment, liability, stress, etc.. #espechat
I want to introduce FISHING as a life long physical activity to my Ss. We live on a lake and yet many of them have never been introduced. Equipment, rods, reels etc are the obstacle. Looking into grants. Put down the Fortnite and GET OUTSIDE! #espechat
A4: Biking or honestly ANY outdoor activity (hiking, geocaching, fishing, etc). My kids have such limited exposure to the outdoors and that’s such an important part of physical activity as we grow up. #ESPEchat
A4: What an important question about barriers. I would love to see all new and remodeled playgrounds be fully inclusive like this one at the John Archer school in Churchville, MD https://t.co/VhoMJWbf8B#espechat
A4 I think it would be pretty cool to have a 🚲 unit at the ms level! I wouldn’t even mind having stationary cycle bikes like a spin class. Definitely would need to find space & 💵 , I think during one #ESPEchat you mentioned @iamspecialized had a grant program @smartintahoe?
@smartintahoe#espechat
I would love to add kayacking or canoeing. We live close to a river and s's go in the summer. The cost of it is a little steep for my s's. I have been trying to figure out how to encourage s's to try it.
A4) I also REALLY want to do a Ninja Warrior Course Unit! My Ss do that stuff on the weekends and are so interested in it. I just dont know where to start. #espechat
#espechat A4 I would like to teaching bowling, I even have the equipment for it! I just need to plan it out and implement it, since I have not had too much experience in teaching it.
That is what I am doing. They were trying to say because there was no way to keep people off of it when school wasn't in session. Last month I sent them lots of options for doing that. 😀#espechat
Q5: Share time, please give any resources to help others bring in new activities. Grants, lesson plans, anything you think could help your fellow #physed folks bring in lifelong activities.
#espechat
A5 - The #Physed and #espechat community is the absolute best for sharing ideas! YouTube and PE Central on facebook are other great places to visit to be inspired
A5: don’t be afraid to be obnoxious! Ask admin, PTA, donors choose, PTAs, local businesses, anyone who might have $$$ or resources. It never hurts to ask! #ESPEChat
I have full lesson plans on how to simulate kayaking, surfing, stand up paddle baording in the PE setting without a water source. Email me at kalie.mckinley@ahsrockets.org for my dropbox links. I will email out tomorrow. I also have fitness camping! #espechat

If you are going to Tampa in April, I will be presenting Simulated SUP at the HS TOY session! I can show you many ways to simulated without water and expensive equipment! #espechat
A5) I know @snaggolf has some really cool golf resources. And @EverlastClimb has some great Traverse Wall activities. I'm definitely lacking in resources myself #espechat
A5. Yoga and mindfulness: @yomindmatters@yogafoster Shameless plug: I pre-record several guided “reflections” I share out on SoundCloud. I have an old phone loaded with them..my Ss do one in the calm corner if needed. #ESPEchat
A5 Something I’ve also been interested in is having like a mini @orangetheory class in #physed- or fitness that ss can use when they no longer have a PE teacher in their lives. @Physed_Pomeroy has an amazing fitness unit using the sported model: https://t.co/i6F9Ge4gTp#ESPEchat
A6: We have agreements with parks and rec for access to the pool and ice arena. Heavenly resort covers almost the entire cost of lift tickets, rentals, and lessons for our s's. A local grant gave me money for slacklines and Disc golf supplies.
#espechat
A6: I reached out to a local bowling alley. They agreed to give instructions for 6 weeks to my G5/6th. Then threw us a pizza party on week 7! #espechat
One thing that I think helps, aside from squeaky wheeling it, is promoting your program! I find that tagging my school/sharing on twitter is a way for constituents to feel more comfy w investing in my program. If we show high quality, they’ll want to add even more value #ESPEChat
A6: I just show up at local environmental-outdoor recreation meetings and races. I ask a lot of questions. I pretty much just talk to everyone I meet and they provide me with their connections and knowledge #espechat
I'm so glad I showed up for a bit. This is reaaaaaalllly stretching me! So many ideas you all have to add wonderful experiences to your programs! #espechat
Keep me posted on how that goes, cliff! I’d love to do something similar. Some of my kids (even up to grade 5) have never bowled before. I’m hoping to change that for all my Ss! #ESPEChat
That is why I am the one program in my district getting stuff. I keep asking and have parents on my side supporting me because they can speak to the quality their Ss are getting. #espechat
A6) I wrote one grant last year to get some connecting scooters, but got turned down. Luckily our PTA is amazing and hooked me up as a Field Day Gift! Definitely need to get back on the grant writing grind though. #espechat
I'm wondering if I could get some students to help set up a disc golf day after school one day. We have disc drivers and could use hula hoops to give it a try. #espechat
You bet! We've borrowed the lanes before. and the free curic is nice. Plug and play since we already have done rolling basics. I'd prob start G3 and up, though.
#espechat
A6 You know I haven’t really done this as much in my new area but totally could as I drive past a frisbee golf course every morning and a 🏹 group sign on the way home 🤔. Our hs has reached out to our local @orangetheory & the women’s varsity 🏀 team now takes a class #ESPEchat
Such a great point while they can be intimidating write grants or find nice parents who can. I have saved my x-country ski program with grants from local groups. #espechat
A6) I wrote one grant last year to get some connecting scooters, but got turned down. Luckily our PTA is amazing and hooked me up as a Field Day Gift! Definitely need to get back on the grant writing grind though. #espechat
I’ve done a 9 hole course in the gym with regular foam frisbees. Not NEARLY as one, but the level is precision required kept it fun. I prob had more fun than the kids playing 6 periods worth in a day...#espechat

To keep promoting outdoor rec at the HS level & to make equipment available to PE teachers who want to teach outdoor recreation in their classes. I am in the process of starting a non profit org that let's Ss SUP for free at the community boat house in Louisville. #espechat
Before you go connect with others on this chat keep the discussion going and share resources. We are a #physed family we can accomplish anything together. Thanks for joining the chat tonight! #espechat
A7 This chat has made me curious about what’s out in my community. My next step being surfing the web & making contact on how they can help me get started w let’s say something like archery just to open up a line of communication. Oh yea I srsly want to start pickleball #ESPEchat
