The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to the fastest hour of the week! I’m the eLearning coach for MSD of MV #MVeLearn and tonight we welcome my co-moderator, Tim Wilhelmus #INeLearn
Hi, #INeLearn! I'm an Innovation, Curriculum, and Technology Specialist for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. But you can just call me "Tim?"
Next week is Indiana’s Digital Citizenship Week and we are getting ready tonight with our topic: Building a Digital Citizenship Team.
We will be using the Q1: R1 for our questions and responses. Here’s why https://t.co/GjPMpjt08p#INeLearn
John here from EVV, in class and trying to chat on here. My definition of a good digital citizen is a person that leaves the digital world in a better way than they found it #INeLearn
A good digital citizen is one who chooses the best path even when all paths are available. Choose the right tools (terms of service), show respect for intellectual property, show respect for fellow humans, show respect for yourself! #INeLearn
Hello! I’m Shalane Niemeier and I am a Kindergarten teacher from @MSDNorthPoseyCo. I think good digital citizenship is teaching students how to utilize technology in their education/life as well as instilling awareness of their digital footprint & good decision making #INeLearn
R1: Having an open conversation is critical. Everyone's voice matters! Also, look for places that are already hosting these conversations, like #ICEIndiana :) We have lots of #DigCit sessions to explore: https://t.co/9BCfSRhd6N#INeLearn
R1: I think sharing the definition of a good digital citizen can be ensured by educating each other on how to use digital resources in the best, most useful way #INeLearn
Hi #INeLearn! JoyAnn, a teacher librarian here. A digital citizen balances privacy with collaboration, knows how to locate reliable resources, is intentional about their digital image/self, and is a leader for how to use their online lives to better themselves and others. #digcit
R1: I think there needs to be an open and honest dialogue with students, parents and families of what our expectations are for ourself and our students regarding digital citizenship. Open floor panel/forums/roundtables could be good #INeLearn
Part of getting people on the same page about #digcit is agreeing on shared definitions and common cultural norms. We’ve all been growing up digital together, and we’ve all made mistakes. #inelearn
Involve Ss and Ts when building digcit curriculum and curating resources for that. Invite the parents for a night during which Ss teach parents. Provide resources so parents can continue the conversations at home. #INeLearn

R2: As soon as possible. Unplugging is a conversation I have with my 3yo and 5yo daily. They love YouTube. They want to create. These conversations have to happen early. #INeLearn
R2: it’s never too early! We’ve been talking a lot of right/wrong use of our chromebooks in kindergarten. Creating good habits are easier to keep than breaking bad habits. It will scale on topics & expectations with age/grade but the dialogue needs to start early! #INeLearn
R2 Some characteristics of good digital citizenship can be learned as soon as students get their hands on their first device. Parents can model when screen time is and is not appropriate, for example. #inelearn

A2: The really is no right age to start. Kids are all different and are digital natives. It's a great injustice if we don't introduce it as early as possible. Even cleaning and maintaining device can be taught in Kindergarten. #inelearn
Q2: internet safety and good digital citizenship should be part of everyday learning, conversations, and modeling when children are very young. #INeLearn
R2: another thing to consider is that when we introduce these lessons, we still want to be on the same page with our parents and community. The bridge between home and school can often be a forgotten tool. #inelearn
R3: I like the upstander conversation from an early age for sure. I think all of these topics can apply to all grades and get deeper as Ss become more advanced. #INeLearn
R3 Things like copyright seem to be easier to teach to younger students. They understand how upset they would be if someone tried to "steal" their artwork. It was always much more of a struggle to teach this concept to high school students.
#INeLearn
R3: 9-12 is a very important time to learn about Digital Footprints and Reputation when they are beginning applications to colleges and jobs. Employers look at their online footprint! #INeLearn
A3: Jumping in late here, folks. I hate to say any one of these should be more important at any age over the next. But I think we can all say the conversation should start with Relationships and Communication, no matter what age. #INeLearn
R3: They all are equally important in high school. I believe that the footprint may take precedence since this will be looked at by colleges/universities and potential employers. We MUST stress digital citizenship in all subjects. #INeLearn
A3: K-2 Relationships and Communication, 3-5 Safety, Privacy and Security 6-8 Footprints Reputation, Self Image and Identity 9-12 Literacy and Creative Credit there is overlap in all of them #INelearn
R3: I think reputation is big too. My mom always told me, don’t post or say anything you wouldn’t want published on the front page of the newspaper #INeLearn

I used to think so too, but hs Ss almost act as if it's normal and expected to violate copyright. I sometimes wonder if it goes hand-in-hand with the idea of cheating on homework. This is something very taboo for younger kids but much more accepted with older students. #inelearn
All these topics are vital. I'd like to see more on how to make the embedding more natural. Sometimes folks see digital citizenship as extra, when it really needs to be a part of every lesson. #inelearn
R4: ALL stakeholders should be involved. Teachers and parents have a responsibility. I think Ss should hold one another accountable. Mentors from the community should also be another active voice for our Ss. #INeLearn
I think high school kids can be challenged to develop their digital leadership! Rather than a low bar for #Digcit they should be striving to set a high standard for themselves and others. #inelearn

R4: I think both parents and teachers should teach digital citizenship skills. Both should be role models for how Ss are using the internet and technology #INeLearn
R4. I think it’s dangerous to give the primary responsibility to any one person/group, because then others might think they don’t have to do it. It needs to be an all in, everyone has a part type of scenario. #INeLearn
R4: Once again, such a tough choice with this Q4. I think Ps have a responsibility to help their children make sound decisions online and when it comes to how they treat others online. Ts have the responsibility to educate during the day and Ps can reiterate at night. #INeLearn
R4: Everyone! But I can't help but think about how technology use in the home impacts this. Phones at dinner, parent social media interactions. I'm not saying this is all bad; I'm saying it is worth considering. #INeLearn
A4- I think it’s an equal responsibility but often it becomes the school’s role and that’s not a bad thing. #digcit needs to be part of character education. #INeLearn
A4: In a perfect world, everyone would be involved in teaching digital citizenship. I'd like to see students model what this looks like to peers as well. #inelearn
I'll agree with this. It is such a hard concept to cover with students. I think you are right on that it goes hand in hand with cheating. Copying and pasting, "but I changed a few words" and this conversation can be just as difficult with parents. #INeLearn
R4: taking from @dianargill, we assume that Ps and Ts are ethically using tech. Sometimes we shouldn’t be role models. We might not be the best source of digital citizenship... #INeLearn
R5: I love the idea of doing a #digcit pledge night. Parents, Ss, and Ts all make a personal pledge on something they vow to do related to digcit! Parents and Ss can have a shared goal, too. #INeLearn
R5: giving kids the opportunity To influence their world and lead others toward solutions is an underutilized approach. We don’t need to figure out how they can help. They can do that if we give them the chance. #inelearn
A4-b I wrote a blog post on how children of digital natives are probably getting their learning from parents now and moving into the future https://t.co/6lPTHQc7zJ#INelearn
Using technology in a lesson also needs to be focused. Hard to have issues when there is purpose driven use. Research a particular topic. Respond to a specific task, etc. #inelearn
R5 Let's face it. We're not cool. There are some things that students simply won't accept hearing from us. Students need to hear these lessons from other students. We are just nerds talking about copyright and phishing.
#INeLearn
R5: I really like the idea of having a Parent night which parents would actually attend. Most will attend if their kid is involved in some manner. #INeLearn
R5: I think Ss know the nuances of tech as well, if not better, than us. We need to show them right and wrong, model it, and let them help police one another. #INeLearn
#Inelearn I think this is a great question to pose. As we establish any culture in a school, this would be no different. Create a culture that supports Ss, Parents, and Ts as digital citizens.
R6: School digital citizenship teams need to be part of the IDOE HSDL (Hoosier Student Digital Leaders) State event coming Nov. 14th in Concord! #INeLearn
I believe if people could see a successful team of students, parents, teachers it would help create more interest in developing similar at other schools. #INeLearn
My former student and colleague @grizgoat has helped create @PIT_Crew_ at @PikeHighSchool. This group works with Ts in fixing issues with tech and showing Ts new technology. These Ss could work with Ts demonstrating #DigCit and supporting the training in classrooms. #INeLearn
R6: Starting a group in the school with students who are willing to learn more could help spread the word out to others! Incorporating their Ps and Ts would bring everyone together #INeLearn
Being part of Be Internet Awesome in Indiana encourages taking a pledge and designing a purpose for your class. Check out the website of resources here! https://t.co/Sypu0QQKiy#INeLearn
I am sure you have. Schools could use this model to promote interaction with Ss leading Ts and for them to present to Ps at meetings, PD, open house, etc. #INeLearn
R7 A team approach implies consistency. And that consistency is necessary for encouraging positive behaviors and discouraging negative behaviors. All stakeholders must have similar high expectations for digital citizenship.
#INeLearn
R7: If we work together to tie #digcit skills naturally into topics and content areas that make the most sense, we have a more holistic approach. Show that this has value by integrating it into all we learn. #INeLearn
R7: it is the same thing as setting goals for ISTEP, or creating a #PBIS, having expectations and everyone on the same page sends a clear message to all stakeholders about the importance of #DigCit. #INeLearn
R7: It’s about building a shared culture. When we are all working toward the same goal, share the same language, and care about one another, making change becomes more affirming and less controversial. #inelearn

#INeLearn
R7: approaching learning with a group is always helpful because everyone is working toward the same thing. Everyone can share their progress and ideas #INeLearn
R8 Like many have said tonight, #digcit must be embedded in daily conversations and lessons as much as possible. It's definitely not something we can teach once, then move on.
#INeLearn
R8: ANYTIME we use tech for any activity, rules and modeling of #DigCit should be reviewed. It’s not something that goes away and it is something that will continue to evolve as tech evolves. Stay current #INeLearn
R8: opportunities present themselves every day in all grades. Take advantage of those opportunities. Take time to use real live-event learning #INeLearn
A8 We can extend through our lessons. Reminding Ss of how to do the things they need to do to remain safe, protect their footprints, be respectful, etc
Also, either Google or Common Sense has lessons. I'll look for it #INelearn
So important to stay current! New tech raises new questions and new concerns ( along with the new opportunities). I like that tech forces us to deal with our citizenship. Look at the conversations we are having as a country right now. #inelearn
Don't forget, if you are looking for a great way to continue the #DigCit Conversation with a team, #ICEIndiana has lots of great sessions, AND a buy 4, get 1 FREE discount: https://t.co/lXdgLDQdsa#INelearn
WU: Maybe we can create some videos on @WeVideo or @Flipgrid that demonstrate aspects of #DigCit. We can then send to @YouTube and share within our district or with our #PLNs. #INeLearn
