A1 Visuals can be a great hook. There is a lot of truth in the saying "A picture is worth 1,000 words"
It also puts most learners on an equal footing to interpret and discuss.
A1: Marzano's research shows that vocabulary can be learned at a deeper level when paired with "non-liguistic representations" aka visuals. :-) #IDedchat

Yes, visuals aren't always a picture. Sometimes it's something the students can see live.
Annually having one of the founding fathers sub for my class is a visual that invites questions. #IDedchat
A2: I try and give a visual representation to the notes daily. It breaks up the flow of class, and allows students to make instant connections. #idedchat
#IDedchat well in mathematics students might notice something and and want to explore if the relationship always holds. And in inquiry I like leading with a visual...related art from the time or something that invites further questions.
A2: Right now my students are planning a vacation on a budget. Visual representation/association of budgeting that we have talked about this semester. #idedchat
R2: labs, demonstrations, alternative assessment projects I do with my students, videos on @YouTube, video creation, @Flipgrid activities, etc #IDedchat
A2 I use visuals as a beginning to discussion. My math students often have @estimation180 entry tasks and we use many visual writing prompts from @mywriteabout#IDedchat

A2: Graphic organizers are a basic visual tool to organize thoughts, etc. We had a great PD on Thinking Maps in our district today - adds deeper cognition to a graphic organizer. #IDedchat
a2. Visuals add another layer of connection with content. Give students a piece of content and allow them to find or generate their own visuals. #idedchat
Estimation 180 is a website created by @mr_stadel
It has well over 180 different images to inspire students to estimate. My 4th graders are currently estimating about paper towels and TP
5th graders are working on flight distances #IDedchat

R2: I think Ss learn things even better when they create their own visuals. My Ss made foldables with the steps of Mitosis. They wrote the words and descriptions and drew pictures of the stages. Another project, Ss made models of a cell. #IDedchat
3 act tasks @gfletchy have also been an excellent visual in math. We are now looking for equations as we are walking in the hallway or at recess. To me, visuals aren’t just a picture I️ pull up. #IDedchat
A2: I like @IDcoachingnet ‘s document based inquiry.... leading with a visual is very powerful in any subject. Math models throughout is also very important. I provide and ask students to create depending on the task. #IDedchat
I love 3 Acts, and @gfletchy is one of my favorite sources for them. Have you ever invited your students to create them? I did once to disappointing results. I really need to try again.

https://t.co/keRNAOimI9 is a digital writing platform. It's similar to a class blog, but it has a huge library of teacher created writing prompts with pictures. #IDedchat

We are using the @DiscoveryEd Math Techbook - each unit begins with a video of that engages students in a math concept before any math is even presented. #IDedchat

That would be really cool. If you come up with one, send it our way, too. My 3rd graders can try it. Maybe I'll be brave enough to have them create one this year. My last attempt was with 5th graders #IDedchat
We tried as well. Everything works so well in my Utopian world that’s inside my mind....wasn’t too successful. Our goal is to create one for our other third grade class to solve. 🙏🏻
R3: I’m testing out @WeVideo and @explainevrythng this semester in my class for my school district. I have a lot of different things that my Ss could do; however, I want them to come up with the ideas. #IDedchat
Our @EPMS_Eagles are apart of @BartlettSchools 1:1 initiative and often create videos among other media to communicate their learning. Commonly see students sprawled out in the hallway creating! #idedchat
A3 There is a lot of visual problem solving in my math classes and I heartily encourage sketching when we are trying to learn our Greek & Latin roots and affixes. #IDedchat
A3: we are also doing 40 Book Challenge @donalynbooks. Ss can create a visual on a card of their favorite chapter or moment. This is esp helpful for my EL Ss and Sped Ss #IDedchat
R3: I have a performance assessment activity where students have 4-6 tasks. Each one has something they must create. Creation and curation leads to significant buy-in from the Ss into their learning. #IDedchat
Yes! We are reading as a class the Wild Robot. I read a chapter and all the Ss created a picture of what they saw. Awesome to see the different perspectives.
Yes!! We have them hanging on a ring in the hallway by the library. Ss will take them home at the end of the year to use as a resource..hopefully. #IDedchat
A3: In math I asked for at least three representations of a problem. These typically included a graph or other model. In a colleagues ELA class she often had the students cast the main characters in a txt. Using photos from People and other entertainment mags. #IDedchat
a4. We have been working towards flipped classrooms. Content delivery via video and direct instruction in the classroom working on practice and skills. #idedchat
A4: Video is huge in my math classes. When we have a video 3 Act Task we watch at least twice. Once for "What do you notice?" then for "What do you wonder?" #IDedchat
A4: The video must supplement learning by reinforcing what has been said but in a different way so that Ss either make their learning more concrete or it will eventually “click” for the others #IDedchat
A4: I pause it and do a lot of “turn and talk” before a definition or idea is confirmed to get them thinking prior to the answer being given to them #idedchat
R4: @brainpop is a good tool to introduce information. I use @Flipgrid after introducing a concept and want to see what Ss remember. Those videos can be shared and commented on. I was talking about Mt St Helens the othe day and used the video to into volcano types #IDedchat
I would love to see some excellent examples of this at the secondary level. Speaking of visuals it is hard for some secondary teachers to embrace rotation models. #IDedchat
A5: I saw a great post today about having elem students great a digital story using Google Slides for illustration and text and then Screencastify to record the story. #IDedchat
I think your students would do well with @flipgrid....or have them take a picture of their drawing...then put it in a Google Slide...use Screencastify to have them record their thinking with the drawing. #IDedchat :-)
A5 https://t.co/lkzK9V0VxN Has a lot of tools for creating math visuals. I have my students screenshot from there to share their discoveries. #IDedchat
So @tinkercad is a 3D program where Ss can create an image of anything they want. It saves the file as a .STL file that can then be used in 3D printing. I had Ss during 1st semester create models of cells in the various stages of mitosis. #IDedchat

A5: One of my favorite tools lately is Screencastify - it is a Google Chrome extension that allows you to record either a tab in Chrome or your entire desktop. #IDedchat
Having students use online images ethically is a big challenge for me. I teach about @creativecommons licensing, public domain, permission, & citing images. #IDedchat
This is a great reminder Jim! One nice thing about inserting images in Google Slides...when you search for an image, it only uses @creativecommons images. #IDedchat

A6: My students can fill out a slip and I'll tweet their work on our @alpBryan account.
I want to get my students to share visuals on their @mywriteabout posts, too. #IDedchat
