#miched Archive

The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

A1: Grammar police seem to be few and far between and even what we read in blogs and 'news' articles don't follow ALL grammar rules #miched
  • sarahmomof3boys Aug 9 @ 8:07 PM EDT
Q1: Students have a disconnect between formal writing & casual social texting #miched
  • Jeremybballer Aug 9 @ 8:07 PM EDT

A1: Biggest issue with teaching grammar today....does it still matter? LOTS of high profile blogs & writers with poor grammar. #michED
  • Jeremybballer Aug 9 @ 8:08 PM EDT
Yes, it is very important that we help our Ss differentiate between formal and informal writing spaces. I have a tool for that. #miched

  • Jeremybballer Aug 9 @ 8:18 PM EDT

  • AndrewHyland Aug 9 @ 8:19 PM EDT
#michED a2 different grammar lexicons are like code switching. If I only have one mode, I do poorly on tests aimed at the other modes.
  • techsavvyed Aug 9 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: I think students struggle with grammar for the same reasons they always have; it's fighting against natural speech patterns. #michED
  • Jeremybballer Aug 9 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I agree. There are not enough positive or correct models that are out there for Ss to see and use. #miched
    In reply to @blocht574

  • hickstro Aug 9 @ 8:21 PM EDT
There are many poor examples, true. Yet, kids - and adults - know how to codeswitch, moving from formal to "digitalk" #MichED

      In reply to @RMWynkoop

  • RobLunak Aug 9 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A3 not at all. We all speak in a way that isn't perfect. Ss have more opportunity to write than my generation did, and they need to #miched
  • AndrewHyland Aug 9 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A3 lol define proper grammar. How far back do we go? German words with Latin rules? #michED
  • TBerriman Aug 9 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A3: I don't blame Tech. We need to incorporate more grammar education across the curriculum. It's not just an ELA issue. #MichED
  • Jeremybballer Aug 9 @ 8:25 PM EDT
