I agree. Some Ts I have spoken to think it isn't considered real unless it is cross curricular. I was just wondering your point of view. #espechat

    #espechat #BreakoutEDU A1 Escape Room
  • PhysEdApps - Moderator Mar 27 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A2) I would say that team building doesn't always have the cognitive element as is found in Breakout ED. #ESPEchat
    In reply to @MrWillPE
  • pewithmrc Mar 27 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A2) Communication may not always be as crucial in team building games as it is in Breakout ED. #espechat
  • CoachOCabotPE Mar 27 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A2- to me it is team building w levels #BReakoutEDU #espechat
  • EPEWCP Mar 27 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A2: breakout has a puzzle or final challenge to accomplish that requires the use of the pieces that you have collected to far. That is not necessarily the case in just team building activities. #espechat
  • jhohnke20 Mar 27 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A2 It's digital which is nice as opposed to having to have the physical materials. It can be accessible for everyone. #espechat
  • foes4sports Mar 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Q2: I feel that #breakoutedu is generally more difficult mentally than most team building activities. Depending on the game it can really challenge both mentally and physically. #espechat
  • smartintahoe Mar 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: Breakout is a series of challenges/puzzles to help solve a bigger puzzle that emphasizes cooperation and creativite problem solving #espechat
  • EPEWCP Mar 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
What do you mean by digital? #espechat
    In reply to @jhohnke20
  • LovePrimaryPE Mar 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A2 seems to me there is much deeper thinking going on during a Breakout than just a team building game. It has a lot more components of learning #espechat
  • smsandino Mar 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 I would say it’s a series of challenges in varying difficulty that involves all domains (psychomotor, cognitive and affective) to get a clue to the next challenge until you finally reach the end goal #espechat
  • CoachFoe Mar 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
#espechat #BreakoutEDU A2 the ability to connect technology and activity into a team building type of event in the PE setting if using a digital breakout
  • CoachWilliamsPE Mar 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A2 I believe it requires more thinking and you have to break codes to move on #espechat and #breakoutedu

Where is the best place to go to find out more info about #breakoutedu #espechat. Where can we see some examples of the games/puzzles??
  • foes4sports Mar 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2: re: the cross-curricular aspect. I think that's great at times, but don't forget that #healthed and #physed has plenty of cognitive learning that needs to be addressed and it's perfectly appropriate and important to focus there. #espechat #breakoutedu
  • PhysEdApps - Moderator Mar 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Joe, you have come to the right place. I bet that @foes4sports and @CoachFoe can show you some resources on their webpage. @MrWillPE has some on his too! #ESPEchat

  • EPEWCP Mar 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Yes! I love it when we can tie our cognitive learning in with other content, but I always put ours first. #espechat
    In reply to @foes4sports
  • smsandino Mar 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2 I think the cognitive piece may be a step up, there’s also that built up suspense with each and every challenge alongside other teams trying to reach the same goal! Almost like that competitive atmosphere #espechat
  • MrWillPE Mar 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
I think @foes4sports and @CoachFoe are a great resource. Stay tuned I am sure they will share #espechat #BreakoutEdu

A2: I would say there is more engagement, more by in by all students. #espechat
  • MrWillPE Mar 27 @ 8:16 PM EDT
Q3: Do you think Breakout ED must follow the Escape Room Model to be called Breakout ED and not Team building? #espechat #BreakoutEDU
  • RandPhysED Mar 27 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2 i feel it focus more in the cognitive learning which can be more engaging #espechat #breakoutEDU
  • CoachFoe Mar 27 @ 8:16 PM EDT
#espechat #BreakoutEDU I use chromebooks for puzzle solving combined with pedometers for activity for clues. I have used box and locks but had better S success w/ digital breakouts. Go to https://t.co/vPVm8H1tCL for HPE breakouts.
    • EPEWCP Mar 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
What do you mean by digital? #espechat
      In reply to @jhohnke20
  • MrWillPE Mar 27 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A3: For me I think the main component is the layered puzzle. I don't think it has to necessarily follow the escape room model, but I do think the puzzles have to be layered and connected. #espechat #breakoutedu
  • LovePrimaryPE Mar 27 @ 8:17 PM EDT

A3 I am not familiar enough to #BreakoutEDU #espechat to answer. Here to find out more about this.
  • smsandino Mar 27 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A3 I don’t think it has to follow in the footsteps of the escape room model. It can look however you want it to look like. You can maybe take away the boxes and locks if you wanted to even and use coordinates or a compass! #espechat
  • MrWillPE Mar 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Q4: What are the educational benefits of Breakout ED #espechat #BreakoutEDU
  • foes4sports Mar 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Sometimes those who stand back and just think end up being the most valuable to a team. I enjoy that aspect of watching what happens during a game. Sometimes I give teams a little nudge to include everyone or "maybe "Johnny" has something to share." #espechat #breakoutedu

There are 2 types of games: digital and "box and locks". You will see both on our Breakout page. Digital is great if you have devices and is perfect in pairs. If you have the boxes and locks, then you can do larger group breakouts. #espechat #breakoutedu

A5 Depending on the way you approaching it. You can do boxes and locks or digitally. #espechat #BreakoutEDU
  • EPEWCP Mar 27 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A5: If you do physical locks and boxes, the cost in minimal for start up material. Gyms often times have old locks they are willing to give. I have never done a digital one. #espechat

  • CoachFoe Mar 27 @ 8:28 PM EDT
#espechat #BreakoutEDU A5 the cost of box and locks. Another reason I like digital breakouts. My Ss have their devices. My focus can be on creating a game.
  • MrWillPE Mar 27 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Q6: Have you done any Breakout ED activities with your classes? #espechat #BreakoutEDU
  • jhohnke20 Mar 27 @ 8:29 PM EDT
So I feel a little naive, but how would a breakout look in a 30 minute PE class? Is it something that should span over multiple classes? Is it an instant activity? I love the idea, I'm just wondering how people incorporate? #espechat
  • PhysEdApps - Moderator Mar 27 @ 8:29 PM EDT
When completing a digital BreakoutEDU, do you have Ss work in groups or by themselves? Does it matter? #ESPEchat

  • Coachadamspe Mar 27 @ 8:29 PM EDT

  • smsandino Mar 27 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A5 You absolutely aren’t obliged to by the #BreakoutEDU kit, if you’ve got the boxes and locks great, if not you can always use maybe cones to cover things you would like covered or pin somewhat “hidden” places that ss need to find #espechat
  • CoachMuseCES Mar 27 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A6 No. I briefly looked at the webpage mentioned in the previous answer and got some good ideas though. #espechat #BreakoutEDU
  • foes4sports Mar 27 @ 8:30 PM EDT
It needs to be done in one class period, so you would just make sure they can do it in that timeframe. In 30 minutes I would write a game that probably only has 3 locks. #espechat #breakoutedu I'm happy to work on one with you if you're interested!
