Hey #espechat! Representing #EPEW2018 tonight from CA! Can't wait to hear what everyone has to say on tonight's topic. Yes a few of us committee members were able to attend and support @PhysEdApps becoming National TOY!
#espechat#BreakoutEDU Another great #Calicrew member and friend, Good evening Matt. Congratulations again Matt on being named @SHAPE_America Nat'l Elem PE TOY award. Well deserved.
A2: breakout has a puzzle or final challenge to accomplish that requires the use of the pieces that you have collected to far. That is not necessarily the case in just team building activities. #espechat
Q2: I feel that #breakoutedu is generally more difficult mentally than most team building activities. Depending on the game it can really challenge both mentally and physically. #espechat
A2 seems to me there is much deeper thinking going on during a Breakout than just a team building game. It has a lot more components of learning #espechat
A1 I would say it’s a series of challenges in varying difficulty that involves all domains (psychomotor, cognitive and affective) to get a clue to the next challenge until you finally reach the end goal #espechat
#espechat#BreakoutEDU A2 the ability to connect technology and activity into a team building type of event in the PE setting if using a digital breakout
A2: re: the cross-curricular aspect. I think that's great at times, but don't forget that #healthed and #physed has plenty of cognitive learning that needs to be addressed and it's perfectly appropriate and important to focus there. #espechat#breakoutedu
Joe, you have come to the right place. I bet that @foes4sports and @CoachFoe can show you some resources on their webpage. @MrWillPE has some on his too! #ESPEchat

A2 I think the cognitive piece may be a step up, there’s also that built up suspense with each and every challenge alongside other teams trying to reach the same goal! Almost like that competitive atmosphere #espechat
Q2: It can be used to let different students strengths shine to combine to accomplish a greater goal. It is also great for students to split up tasks and take on roles within their group #espechat
#espechat#BreakoutEDU I use chromebooks for puzzle solving combined with pedometers for activity for clues. I have used box and locks but had better S success w/ digital breakouts. Go to https://t.co/vPVm8H1tCL for HPE breakouts.
A3: For me I think the main component is the layered puzzle. I don't think it has to necessarily follow the escape room model, but I do think the puzzles have to be layered and connected. #espechat#breakoutedu
https://t.co/nEKi8HKJdR Here is the Wikipedia definition. If you have never done one, you should. Most cities have a place that you can go to. They are a blast #espechat#breakoutedu
A3 I don’t think it has to follow in the footsteps of the escape room model. It can look however you want it to look like. You can maybe take away the boxes and locks if you wanted to even and use coordinates or a compass! #espechat
Sometimes those who stand back and just think end up being the most valuable to a team. I enjoy that aspect of watching what happens during a game. Sometimes I give teams a little nudge to include everyone or "maybe "Johnny" has something to share." #espechat#breakoutedu
A4: Ss accessing content in a new and exciting way. Ss engaging w one another on a level that is not always the case. Ss finding success in small steps to build their confidence. plus it is just plain old fun. #espechat
There are 2 types of games: digital and "box and locks". You will see both on our Breakout page. Digital is great if you have devices and is perfect in pairs. If you have the boxes and locks, then you can do larger group breakouts. #espechat#breakoutedu
One of my goals for next year is to use the Breakout idea as a PBL for my little ones. Seems daunting but those young ones already leaning how to use the locks from our Media Specialist. She has about 7-8 of the Breakout Kits!#espechat
#espechat#BreakoutEDU We did not present on breakout, that is a whole session we do, but we do have resources/games on r site https://t.co/vPVm8H1tCL under breakout tab specifically for HPE and at all levels. Digital and box/locks. Any time you have ?s pls contact us, can do GHO
A4: #ESPEChat Utilize Leadership and being a good follower, Feels like a video game(kids love video games), Bring some kids into the fold that may not like sport competition, its challenging
A4: Creative problem solving, Collaboration, Communication, and most importantly Critical Thinking. I tell my students right up front that this will be HARD. Adn you can't believe how many kids suddenly engage when they hear that. #breakoutedu#espechat
A5: If you do physical locks and boxes, the cost in minimal for start up material. Gyms often times have old locks they are willing to give. I have never done a digital one. #espechat
A4 A new way to present new concepts, a way to review past concepts, small groups to promote social skills, the use of skills to not only promote the mature technique but also to practice that biomechanical eye for maybe a coach, immerse ss in MVPA in relation to HR #espechat
#espechat#BreakoutEDU A5 the cost of box and locks. Another reason I like digital breakouts. My Ss have their devices. My focus can be on creating a game.
So I feel a little naive, but how would a breakout look in a 30 minute PE class? Is it something that should span over multiple classes? Is it an instant activity? I love the idea, I'm just wondering how people incorporate? #espechat
Hey, @RM_SHES_PE there is a great #espechat going on right now on the topic of #breakoutedu in #physed I know you are interested in that topic, do be sure to go back and read through the Twitter chat!
A4: Follows flipped/Blended learning model and allows teacher to be more free to give feedback. You can DI and make it as easy or hard as you want. Maybe the best is it develops character by developing perseverance. #GrowthMindset#espechat
I use it as an activity for the day. I keep it short because it is hard for them. Mine isn't nearly as involved or as many steps as other Ts can use. #espechat
A5 You absolutely aren’t obliged to by the #BreakoutEDU kit, if you’ve got the boxes and locks great, if not you can always use maybe cones to cover things you would like covered or pin somewhat “hidden” places that ss need to find #espechat
It needs to be done in one class period, so you would just make sure they can do it in that timeframe. In 30 minutes I would write a game that probably only has 3 locks. #espechat#breakoutedu I'm happy to work on one with you if you're interested!
A6 no as i don't have a class of my own my i would like to try now during my internship and next semester during my student teaching. what do you think??? #espechat#breakoutEDU
#espechat#BreakoutEDU very similar Bob but can be done indoors, in a classroom even hallway, small space if need be. Whereas I think of geocaching an outdoors event.
I think you can lengthen or shorten to suit your needs. Usually my #breakoutEDU sessions last about 30 minutes from start to finish. But I also really like to layer the puzzles. #espechat
Yes. It's all how you do it. With the little ones, sometimes you do it whole class. Or, each group just has to open one lock instead of opening multiple locks. See Jeff Jonaitis' Breakout on https://t.co/3lID6hwGst#espechat#breakoutedu
A6: really want to create a Ready Player One #breakoutedu but think it might be wrong age group for that book/movie would be awesome at MS or HS #espechat
You can buy the boxes on the Breakoutedu website. They are $150 now each, I think. I bought all the stuff I needed from stores and Amazon and spent about $60 each. #breakoutedu#espechat

I was thinking the same thing. I was hoping to spend some time this summer figuring it out! #espechat Maybe a brainstorming session at #EPEW2018 is needed.
Q7: If you said Yes to #6: What challenges have you faced in your Breakout ED classes. If You said No to #6: What has prevented you from trying it? #espechat#BreakoutEDU
A7: challenge was keeping it simple enough for them to complete in 30 min. I got very excited and a little carried away with my planning the first time. Had to trim in down quite a bit. #espechat
A7 All my students want me to give them time to complete the challenge...One of the best activities ever...Ss are so focused they only talk when they need to... #espechat#breakoutedu
#espechat#BreakoutEDU A7 My first was a box and locks and my Ss were not ready for a large group activity. We are still working on team bldg starting in small groups and bldg from there.Again that is why I like digital for my situation, small groups.
I find it depends on how much you are willing to put into it. If you create it from scratch, it will take longer. It depends what you are looking for and if you can find something to meet your needs.#espechat
Q7: If you said Yes to #6: What challenges have you faced in your Breakout ED classes. If You said No to #6: What has prevented you from trying it? #espechat#BreakoutEDU
Q7 I’ve been wanting to try out an adventure run as a stepping stone to #breakoutEDU — I think my thinking, processing and planning would segway nicely into an escape room type of activity #espechat
Q8: If you have experience with Breakout ED, What advice do you have for teachers with large class sizes, ESL populations, or students with learning or physical limitations. #espechat#BreakoutEDU
Do one with your family and/or friends. Here's how geeky our family is. I set up a box and locks game for Christmas Eve for the family to do! #espechat#breakoutedu
#espechat#BreakoutEDU Would be tough to set back up for the next group coming in. Box/locks take me a long time to set up. I do one in a day rest of classes another activity and rotate it over time.
A8: This works great for large class sizes. With low readers, I make sure to have visuals with all of the directions, and I am also very careful about how I group so that I know that it will be set up for success. #espechat
A8 do a digital #breakoutedu and create one that allow Ss to be guided to different paths...1st questions do you want to read the challenges or challenges be read to you??? #espechat
Q9: What do you say to those who think Breakout ED is too stationary and doesn’t give students enough MVPA? Do you alter your Breakout lessons to include MVPA? #espechat#BreakoutEDU
Redesign field day around #breakoutEDU. Students start in the classroom, escape there first and then have to navigate to other buildings, rooms around campus. #espechat
#espechat#BreakoutEDU A8 No matter what don't be like me and cave to S pressure when they ask for clues and I just gave them (my 1st time). The whole point is allow the Ss to struggle and overcome. They will feel a greater sense of accomplishment, no matter the level or skill
If you have devices, digital is the way to go to engage all students. Some digital games include activity via pedometer use or team physical activities that need to be completed. ESL, Learning or physical limitations can be addressed by how you make teams. #espechat#breakoutedu
#espechat#BreakoutEDU A8 Prep Ss that breakouts are hard, they are going to be challenged. As a T be mindful that they can be "messy", not what you as a HPE T are used to organizing and doing as an activity.
This makes it hard for those thinking #Breakoutedu for field day - Parents and other teachers always get in the way of the struggle. They think they are helping am i right #ESPEChat
A9 Breakout EDUs lend themselves to cross-curricular activities. If using something like a number lock for a box, have the Ss perform a fitness task for the lock numbers. Push-up, squats, etc. #BreakoutEDU#espechat
Q10: Does your Breakout ED require access to wifi? If Yes, what do you suggest for those who want to add Breakout ED to their program but who have limited or no access to technology. #espechat#BreakoutEDU
I haven't, but there is "Nutrition Leprechaun" by Jeff Jonaitis on our page is good for I'd say 2nd graders. I'd be up for writing one with you! #espechat#breakoutedu
In reply to
@Coachadamspe, @EdTechAri, @smartintahoe, @MrWillPE, @TechCoachSusan
A9 I think you can step out of the box in #breakoutEDU — including movement as part of the challenges. Do a series of exercises and come up with which type of component of fitness it is? #espechat
A10 WiFi is only required for those choosing to do a digital version. Otherwise boxes and locks as well as skill/game equipment is all one would need. #BreakoutEDU#espechat
A9: I'd say they haven't really looked at the games. Most challenges on our website include a lot of activity. Our kids were dripping when we did Sports Executive Challenge. Only a few would be for when you get kicked out of the gym and are in a classroom. #espechat#breakoutedu
