#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome to #worldgeochat tonight! We are talking about one of the most fascinating countries -- China. Take a minute to introduce yourself, tell us where you are from and what you teach.
Hi everyone! Ed, 7th grade geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. Excited to hear how other teachers are addressing China in their classrooms. #worldgeochat
Gday #worldgeochat
Carl from Avonsleigh Australia... sort of south of China and to the right a bit.
I'm a Year 8 Learning leader so even though I don't teach Geography, I'm often visiting Geography classes

I saw photos of @jmgarner2003 students prepping for the AP exam. I can't imagine what a challenge that must be for both teachers and students! #worldgeochat

We will get started in just a couple of minutes, but a couple of reminders -- Use the A1, A2, format, use the #worldgeochat hashtag and be professional at all times.
A1 I think it’s important for students to see the differences between the urbanized east and rural west. Then compare the ethnic groups, the map says a lot about which ethnic groups are developing faster. https://t.co/ZSZ5w9QwWC#worldgeochat
A1) I think start with getting them to understand the physical size of China, and thus different environments, cultures, needs etc.
Kids can relate to size pretty well #worldgeochat

As a (primarily medieval) word history teacher, we spend a lot of time looking at cultural diffusion along the Silk Road, how the Mongols impacted the areas they conquered, and the impact of exploration (example: Zheng He). #worldgeochat
A1: I feel like we have to learn about + teach "One Belt, One Road," the 21st-Century's silk road (and the largest infrastructure endeavor IN HUMAN HISTORY) #worldgeochathttps://t.co/beJVvT4eow
And then there is the whole, coast, mountains, deserts bit, combined with how old some of these cultures are. Of course they will evolve differently #worldgeochat
I often discuss with students the idea that China was seen by Europe as a place you sailed to not walked to. That's hard to fathom today when you can just drive or take a train. #worldgeochat
Our zoomable viewer isn’t working right now (grumble), but we have a nice, if dated, map to take a peek. It’s worth discussing why it’s dated (media literacy!) as well as the content displayed. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/piMTPK56ry
A1: with my APHG Ss my students do a world cultures project. They research the culture from all aspects & present the info to the class. We also discuss th importance of economics in China with the SEZs and their escapades into the S China sea with CNN student news #worldgeochat
As an Australian, it's been interesting how we have prospered from Chinese industrial development but now the Chinese have learnt what to do and no longer need us. Economically very interesting #worldgeochat
Would love to see the images you use @geographylady I remember seeing a city side-by-side once that was amazing, but don't remember it's context or source #worldgeochat

A2 Ss need to understand the OCP in the context of a reaction to poor fertility policies of Mao. BUT now that it is over, there needs to be an emphasis on the long terms effects. https://t.co/8nCbCNAxZ4#worldgeochat
A2 You could have them read and discuss the recent targeted tariffs they've imposed on the US, and the reactions of those here who will be hurt by them. #worldgeochat
A2: by teaching the “New Child Policy” as I like to call it. Talk reasons behind One Child Policy, gender imbalances, and social issues resulting from OCP. Look at migration streams of #chinese families to the U.S. #worldgeochat
A2: my students do an APPARTS writing assignment using a current news article (this year and last I used an article about the end of the one child policy). #worldgeochat
My students are fascinated by the OCP and it is difficult to distract them, sooooo we focus on the changes to the policy and the change in pop pyr shapes, which leads to a conversation on consequences. #worldgeochat
A2: I think China has started to play such a large role in the U.S. that Ss already see them as more than the One Child Policy. My Ss may be aided by the fact we have Chinese boarders. #worldgeochat
A2- I love showing the Ss how progressive some of the cities are. We also look at how different Disney is there and how much more amazing some rides are, but we’re in Orlando, so Disney connection makes sense #worldgeochat
A2 Integrating contemporary Chinese economics, culture (Cantopop!) and, of course, geography. The way China is literally creating islands in the middle of the ocean sparks a dozen conversations. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/64AqIA1H9x
This is something we addressed too. We coupled materials from the @DBQProject on the One Child Policy with @Newsela articles about the changes made to the policy. Great conversations for our population growth unit. #worldgeochat

South China Sea is a great case study! #worldgeochat Especially if you're teaching "Monroe Doctrine" in early US foreign policy...

A3 Check this out! Watch DOZENS of Chinese cities grow on Google Earth Engine Timelapse! Without globalization, urbanization to this magnitude isn’t possible. https://t.co/1cjRwPZWLM#worldgeochat
A3: When discussing geopolitical theories, we reference China’s One Belt One Road Initiative — and how it may reshape global trade. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/ggsXpPRrpA
A3) China needs resources to develop this new cities and industries. Trade wars obviously affect resource cost but Chinese economy prioritises these developments ahead of other programs #worldgeochat
A3: my Econ Ss looked at this when we talked about economic growth, especially in how it concerns our agriculture industry. Globalization helps to bring them economic growth & foreign dollars, while the trade wars will cause inc. prices & dec. ex/imports #worldgeochat
This is the Globalization Grille Choice Menu Hyperdoc my students are currently using. I have really enjoyed the use of @SutoriApp for the first time! It is a great tool for students to demonstrate their learning! https://t.co/HO0XFnRYzD#worldgeochat
A4 China can provide a pivotal partner to the entire region in helping the North Koreans disarm themselves, while providing N Korea with the security they seek from the west. https://t.co/1cjRwPZWLM#worldgeochat
Ken from Western Oregon Univ & Center for Geography Education in Oregon. Just arriving after having to drive my child here, there, & yonder #worldgeochat
A4: Money talks — and this is certainly the case in China-North Korea relations — but a regime collapse could send refugees spilling over their 870-mile shared border. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/IJAeqXpBbY
A4: not only is it important in discussion about political geography and the influence of communism, but also important in the topics of migration and people escaping North Korea through China. #worldgeochat
A3 I think it’s never amiss to remind students how many people live in China, and that impacts trade. Baidu is bigger than Google. Weibo is bigger than Facebook. And Alibaba is bigger than Amazon and eBay combined. (!) #worldgeochathttps://t.co/I0itA6AEBo
A4: Money talks — and this is certainly the case in China-North Korea relations — but a regime collapse could send refugees spilling over their 870-mile shared border. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/IJAeqXpBbY
A5 I want students to understand that China is a main player in the geopolitics of the world and that their influence is very difficult to deny or stop in some cases. https://t.co/sM4hCic8d5#worldgeochat
A5: the one thing that I definitely want my Ss to understand is that China is no longer the China of Mao. They are changing the face of global economics and language. #worldgeochat
A5 one thing is really hard but I think the economic interdependence and trade relationship importance. Get kids to think about how much their nike's and iPhones would cost if they weren't made in China. #worldgeochat
A4 Teach about the geopolitics about China's desire to have North Korea there as a geography buffer for China. This article explains https://t.co/MOg16VcRnL#worldgeochat
A5 I agree Rachel. Being aware of the diversity within China as well as the fact that it is a major player on the world stage that the U.S. is linked with in so many ways. #worldgeochat
A5: If you have the #1 pick in https://t.co/E5T99QneU2 you take China.
It's consistently in the news and is the greatest geopolitical challenge and opportunity for US in the 21st Century #worldgeochat
A5 I can't choose just one! If there were time, China deserves it's own class to teach its diversity of geographic riches, physically, culturally, economically, and politically #worldgeochat
A5: As they would say: “Don’t sleep on China.” They are making moves to be the next #superpower. At the same time, their people are just like anywhere else. Their Ss love #Social#media just as much anywhere. #worldgeochat
A5: If students are into the NBA, have them research Klay Thompson's shoe deal + google image the statue of Stephon Marbury in China. The @NBA is the most global of the big pro sports leagues #worldgeochat@JohnHonish
A5- China is full of cultures and diversity. It is very forward in a lot of ways technologically. It’s history is rich and interesting. It is very significant in the world today. We must understand it better. #worldgeochat
A5: I also want students to see local and global connections — especially considering the way Iowa farmers might be impacted by a trade war with China. #worldgeochat
A5: the last thing I tell my Ss to close the #China Unit. There are 400 Million Young people, more English speakers than the US has people; there are more honors students than the US has students in total #worldgeochat
A6: The short videos are my favorite hooks before diving deeper into a link or two. #worldgeochat Having students dive into research from a few of these good sources just ignites curiosity! https://t.co/AGgiucYYk5
Also love Eastern Philosophy as pregame https://t.co/5KylvPuqPK
