#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Hey #K12ArtChat! First time, long time. Educator out of Charlottesville VA. Educators that use the arts to showcase joy and kindness? @anitanixon@cyndihwells@NNHSart for starters.
Lisa Dawley, professor at UNC Chapel Hill, hope it's ok if I join in...love working with K-12 teachers, one of my top teacher heroes is @fuglefun! #k12artchat
A1 because that is how students develop ownership of an activity. It is how students get closer to what is created by having empathy for who is it is helping #k12artchat
A1: We need to focus on students' emotions and feelings to make sure we connect with them in a meaningful way and earn their trust before jumping into teaching them academics. #k12artchat
A1: Not sure we should focus on them but be aware of them and be ready to help our students when their emotions and feelings may be getting the best of them. #K12ArtChat
A1 Art and poetry have the ability to express what language canāt. Helping students feel safe and welcome means that we need to provide opportunities for non-text forms of expression. #K12ArtChat#edchat#literacy
A1 because that is how students develop ownership of an activity. It is how students get closer to what is created by having empathy for who is it is helping #k12artchat
A1: Without emotion, the only learning is memorization of factual knowledge...joy, fear, excitement, taking risk, having courage and more are all tied to powerful and deep learning experiences #K12ArtChat
A1: Ss have to have a safe place to learn to express their emotions and thoughts - to work through things - it's important for Ss to us model it #K12ArtChat
A1: student voice and opinion is a crucial part of developing a safe learning environment, where students can take risks and educators can help model skills that will be life long learning experiences #k12ArtChat
A1) As my children's first teacher (a parent), I would never leave their feelings out of their learning and growth. Whether learning is at home, school, or anywhere, it requires self-awareness and the ability to navigate emotional response. #K12ArtChat
A1: When teachers show they care for studentsā interests and emotions, it builds trust and a learning environment thatās collaborative and open. They are more open to learning. Sometimes it may be the first time an adult has listened to their needs too. #k12artchat
A1, As an artist, we know the vast span of emotions we personally go through as creative beings. We should be there to help our students feel safe & learn how to manage those emotions positively #k12ArtChat
It is imperative for educators to help create a safe space for learning. The first goal is the safety and well being of those students who are entrusted to our care #K12ArtChat#a1
A1. Trauma informed classrooms are real. Something like one in five Americans deal with mental illness. We use content to teach PEOPLE, not the other way around. Student-centered classrooms are human-centered instruction. Because priorities. And #kidsdeserveit#k12artchat
A1: When we focus on students' emotions and feelings, we show them that we care and it is important to us that they find meaning in what they are learning and in the classroom. #K12ArtChat
A1 If we want our students to be attentive and learn, they must be socially and emotionally stable. It's our job now to help them with this! #K12ArtChat
A1- if you canāt connect with your students you simply cannot reach them. Theyāre people and they go through things, so if your canāt place focus on that then youāre simply in the wrong field, in my opinion! #K12ArtChat
#k12ArtChat The answer is yes because we need to develop the capacity to imagine, think, visualise, feel and create in three dimensions... and beyond...
In today's society we are more aware that our students come to us with high ACES and we need to use Trauma informed care to insure our students can get the help they need so they can focus on learning #K12ArtChat#a1
#k12ArtChat The answer is yes because we need to develop the capacity to imagine, think, visualise, feel and create in three dimensions... and beyond...
A2. @DJOcounseling is a godsend. A high counselor to student ratio helps us understand,
appreciate, and educate the WHOLE student. Waaaay beyond grades. #k12artchat
A1 in the art room emotions tend to get expressed more freely. If we as Ts arenāt paying attention and supporting our students, weāre missing an opportunity to help Ss learn how art can help to process our emotions. #K12ArtChat
A2: Being able to stop, listen and observe our students. We communicate non-verbally through our body language and it is always good to stop and refocus. #K12ArtChat
A1 - Emotions are the fuel of our learning- nay, our entire being. They fuel the elephant that carries us along the path, to borrow from @JonHaidt- so we have to be mindful of them if we have any chance of moving forward. #K12ArtChat
Encouraging my Ss to share about themselves allows me to understand where they are different to we can all come together and connect thru our art. Our spec ed Ts help me get to know our Ss better so I can best serve them emotionally & academically #K12ArtChat
A2- SOCIAL MEDIA!!! Itās what everyone is connected to, we often shy away from using it as a tool but it serves as a great tool of connectivity!!! It also helps foster an open and honest dialogue, create boundaries and youāll be just fine! #K12ArtChat
A2 if you look for them, there are tons of resources around to help support social emotional learning. @NAEA offers some really great webinars and my state @ArtEducatorsNJ and @ArtsEdNJ are also helping to share resources for Ts #K12ArtChat
Q3: What stories (books, videos, plays, songs, oral stories) can be used to #sparkempathy with our students to help build background knowledge prior to the start of a project? #k12artchat

Q3: What stories (books, videos, plays, songs, oral stories) can be used to #sparkempathy with our students to help build background knowledge prior to the start of a project? #k12artchat
As educators we must first SEEK to UNDERSTAND our students, our community and the challenges they face. With knowledge we can better prepare space spaces for learning #K12ArtChat
A2, paying close attention to your Ss body language, attitude or even just a feeling you have & then communicating with their teacher or even the counselor. Sometimes their artwork will be a big sign- I've had that a few times! #k12ArtChat

Always THIER OWN. Finding meaningful ways to share them, extend out from them, talk about them, develop perspective/empathy with them, etc. Our stories are powerful in any media. #k12ArtChat

A3: I reinforced these points all year: My final Motivation Monday. I. Take care yourself II. Find something to believe in bigger than you. III. Do the right thing first and always. IV. Serve Others. Backed up w/ examples from my life #k12ArtChat
A3. We host a month-long bracketology tournament pitting characters from American Lit head-to-head in a battle of who had it the hardest. SUPER empowering way to teach empathy! Single elimination tourney called #MarchSadness w/ arguments & class vote to advance #k12artchat
We could make that happen - I need to build my writing confidence like I've built up my creative confidence #K12ArtChat - @Artguy76 and I have been working on a little something in our free time.
