Rolling out the red carpet this morning to welcome Dave Burgess @burgessdave - our special guest author - and all of you amazing educators to this special #BookCampPD - thank you for being here!
Good Morning Everyone, Melissa, 7th Grade Science from Upstate NY ready to come aboard and set sail on this awesome #bookcamppd adventure with @burgessdave
Some of my friends boil their water, but I don't know.I've never been able to do it.I know it would be alright, but something about just knowing it came from the tap gets 2 me.Usually we are stocked up on garrafones of water, but somehow we let the stockpile diminish.#bookcamppd
Friendly Reminder: please help us retweet questions and if you are unable to see them, let us know!
We will do our best to resolve the issue!
@mjjohnson1216#bookcamppd
Good morning! Sarah 3rd grade LA teacher from Ohio here. So excited that @burgessdave is in attendance today.. on my 3rd book published by DBC, Inc. now #bookcamppd
A1. When "Teach Like a Pirate" was published in 2012, Dave Burgess had already spent many years sharing with educators about the PIRATE philosophy. He certainly impacted teachers from our school and students they taught. #BookCampPD
A1: I'm not sure the impact the #tlap book itself has had on the community, but when we can hear @burgessdave speak about everything in the book, the fire is lit for months and we go back to class re-energized! #bookcamppd
A1 @CTechEd (district PD) has created webinars teaching the philosophy ... Personally, PIRATE validated and enhanced my teaching ... I understood it and your book helped me put my thinking into practice #BookCampPD
A1 I believe it started a pirate revolution. I started with Lead Like a Pirate, and have read Learn Like a Pirate. I think it's a new way of thinking for education. #bookcamppd
A1. Educators are so excited about sharing with others details of what they read - I believe there are 38 books Burgess Publishing currently has out - that there are MANY chat groups from the books. #BookCampPD
A1 #tlap in my view is about how you view your role as a classroom T. As a “pirate” you have permission to go rogue and be outlandish and innovative in the name of reaching ALL your Ss. It is a mindset that you live #bookcamppd
A1: Many teachers feel isolated in how passionate they are about their work. For me, #TLAP validated how strongly I feel about the work I do. #bookcamppd
A1. ENGAGEMENT and student interest is now a hot topic in education! Personally I’ve adopted poor @burgessdave as a mentor. He’s an inspiration! #bookcamppd
A1. Please check out these recent books published by Burgess Publishing. Yes, this many amazing authors make an amazing impact in the field of education. To read more about them in detail or purchase them - please click on this link: https://t.co/AMoRLUgTSX#BookCampPD
My favorite part of the chats about the DBC books - educators share how they've taken ideas, tweaked them, and made them work in their own spaces! #bookcamppd#ShiftThis

A1) ppl have the mentality that's how it's always been done. This book shakes up that notion and promotes innovation. Due to this book I create moments of impact for students to shine. It shows every moment can be special in learning and we have a duty to make it so #BookCampPD

A1 I was inspired to read the book after having the opportunity to see @burgessdave at Revolutionizing Learning in Royse City, TX! Reminded me of how inspiring and motivating we can be for our Ss. #BookcampPD#tlap
A1. I actually read this one late - after #ShiftThis and #LearnLap. This one, like those, made me realize I am not alone in wanting to make changes. It's certainly created a community here for all of us who might not have one. #bookcamppd
A1: Ignited a renewed spirit of teaching & learning that fosters risk-taking, a growth mindset, engagement, & reflection on current practices -- to focus on how best to serve Ss, Ts, & admin. to extend their learning! #BookCampPD#TLAP
A1: #TLAP has re-energized teachers all over the country. The movement & expansion w/ other books from DBC have really caught on. For myself they have challenged me to bring my all everyday & step out of my comfort zone. I have incorporated so much fr TLAP & LeadLAP! #bookcamppd
@burgessdave Gave me the “permission” I needed to integrate my passions of comics and hip hop in the classroom. Made me fall in love with teaching all over again! Forever indebted. My A-type never would have broken the rules without this push. #bookcamppd
A1) I’ve never read #tlap 😬😬 but I’ve heard @burgessdave speak about it on @acr0ssthehall podcast and it changed the way I brought energy and connected learning to the world #bookcampPD
A1: It's one of my first suggestions to everyone I work with that has a classroom! It gives T's & Admin. a framework for fun in the classroom! It's inspiring to say the least. #bookcamppd
A1: I've seen Ts on Twitter pushing the boundaries, sharing information and strategies. For me, it's about taking a risk, letting go, and giving students voice and choice! #bookcamppd
@burgessdave Gave me the “permission” I needed to integrate my passions of comics and hip hop in the classroom. Made me fall in love with teaching all over again! Forever indebted. My A-type never would have broken the rules without this push. #bookcamppd
A1: The #TLAP community supports each other and is the epitome of collaboration to support our KIDS. For me personally, taking each day with the mindset of “would students buy tickets for this class/lesson?” significantly changed the look and feel of our classroom #bookcamppd

A1. Our dreams came true when we became educators; time and life sometimes try to minimize and distract our purpose. #tlap revives and fires the passion that made you an educator and equips you to be the best you can be #bookcamppd
A1 Tremendous impact, read #tlap 3 years ago, pushed me to make changes, stop doing what I always did, inspired me and I know it pushes others to step out of comfort zones and make a diff for Ss and themselves #bookcamppd

A1) I've not read it yet, but it's on my list. I have heard a few podcasts w/Dave on it, and I admire his passion. I am excited to read it & see what new ideas I can implement. #bookcamppd
A1: The quote on pg 145 says it all for me " Do you want to be safe and good, or do you want to take a chance and be great" -Jimmy Johnson
This book helps me remember that I need to grow and stay on the cutting edge in my field even if I fail at first. #bookcamppd

A1 it has really shed a light on moving away from the sage on the stage. This really defined ways that you can change that old school philosophy. For me, it's helped me come out of my shell as the dry teacher and become more engaged with my kids as people. #bookcamppd
A1- personally- flipping my mindset to do whatever it takes to teach my kids and be my best for them. When a whole community bands together to teach like pirates, miraculous things happen in education #BookCampPD
A1: DBC books inspired so much passion and fun in the teaching community. I feel like it empowered me and so many other teachers to put ourselves out there, be silly, and innovative. #bookcamppd!
Nili Bartley from MA trying to jump on while at gymnastics:) A1 #tlap has created a community of passionate Ts all over the world-it opened my eyes to the educator I could be (and it still does!) & this community is one where I know I'm accepted #bookcamppd
A1: It was #tlap that ignited & validated my teaching with engagement and passion - the entire @burgessdave publishing set should be what is given to grad. students! #bookcamppd
A1 it has also brought teachers from around the world together through the #tlap and helps us to build #PLN , not enough characters to say it all :) #bookcamppd
That's great, Emily. We all need inspiration so that we can be our best selves for the people we serve, especially our students. #BookCampPD#servantleadership#TLAP

A2. My "inner pirate" went soaring into a time and place of creative thoughts that helped moved instruction/assessment/technology/data management forward for students when brainstorming with another pirate when we fueled each other's imaginations. #BookCampPD
Mine is Reader Man. He kicks off our reading unit with a letter revealing to the kids that they have reading powers (this comes from workshop). We have reading/math night in another week and my students are coming in capes to celebrate their reading powers. #bookcamppd

A1 (part 2): I like to think of the movie Matilda. The sign "If you are having fun, you are not learning" is used, #tlap is the opposite and should be our ROUGE teacher way of being until we aren't alone! #4ocf#bookcamppd
Agreed, and another of my favorite things is all of the other chats and Voxer groups that have formed to discuss the books, but more importantly, to become connected #bookcamppd#tlap#4OCF
A2) always try new things. Things that you don’t know will work but will bring a different energy to the classroom! Students see your energy they will buy in #bookcampPD
A2 This year, I risked “standards-based teaching and grading” in my classroom ... required me to think outside the box and take some kick-back — working not for completion but for learning has been a struggle - battling the “game of school” ... I’m loving it! #BookCampPD
A1: #TLAP has re-energized teachers all over the country. The movement & expansion w/ other books from DBC have really caught on. For myself they have challenged me to bring my all everyday & step out of my comfort zone. I have incorporated so much fr TLAP & LeadLAP! #bookcamppd
A2 I do my best to challenge the way I teach everyday now. I do things I wouldn't have done 2 years ago and try new stuff out. It's a wild ride but I don't want to get outdated. #bookcamppd
a2| To truly be risk takers, it's essential to step out on faith and believe you'll make a change in the life of our Ss. #BookCampPD | As a Parent , my thoughts.
A2 I have really tried this year making sure my classroom is a place that Ss WANT to be. At the end of class when they saw “awww it’s done already” I think I have done my job that day. #bookcamppd
Reading the responses I think it's "safe" to say that #tlap has reminded us to step out of that "safety zone" and be courageous risk-takers! #bookcamppd@burgessdave
A1b: It also validated the intention involved in my work as a classroom teacher. I'm not a NATURAL teacher, I work hard to constantly improve and am never satisfied. It's not natural, it's intentional. #bookcamppd
A1: It encourages every T to be more creative, authentic & purposeful with their teaching. It united Ts with the common goal of creating life long learners. After 19 years it has re energized my teaching & reminded me of the importance of the impact Ts have everyday. #bookcamppd
A2 I remind myself that I am here because of my Ss. They are my Why! They deserve all that I can give them. Why not give them my best? #kidsdeserveit#bookcamppd
Sorry to inject one piece of negativity into #bookcamppd. But if you buy DBC books on @amazon be VERY careful not from third party sellers as some have knock offs of our books.
A2 This year, I risked “standards-based teaching and grading” in my classroom ... required me to think outside the box and take some kick-back — working not for completion but for learning has been a struggle - battling the “game of school” ... I’m loving it! #BookCampPD
A2 taking risks can be scary. I have kids counting on me to support their learning, so sometimes it’s a deep breath and a leap into the unknown. My amazing PLC helps a lot too! We are unstoppable when together. #BookCampPD
A2: The books have inspired me to try things NOW in my classroom instead of waiting for that never date where everything will somehow align perfectly. I've also tried blogging, Twitter chats, and quit being scared to fail in front of students. It's very liberating. #bookcamppd!
A2. My inner pirate is unleashed with my inner 6th grader and we make magic. Always asking HMW improve this experience for Ss? HMW extend the curiosity & learning outside our class? HMW make this more meaningful, engaging, relevant, and student centered? #bookcamppd
#bookcamppd A2 Being a risk taker is huge, because colleagues who matter appreciate your willingness to take those risks/ #Students appreciate it just as much.
A2. Holy smokes! I’ve written and published my own book and Dave was the inspiration to take this scary risk!!!!! #bookcamppd so glad I reached out of my comfort zone! https://t.co/MBtTSrFmKO
A2 every day, one day at a time. Try something new, look at something differently, read something new, spend time with somebody new. Also to allow more space in my classroom for those same kind of behaviors for my students. #bookcamppd
Sorry to inject one piece of negativity into #bookcamppd. But if you buy DBC books on @amazon be VERY careful not from third party sellers as some have knock offs of our books.
A2: I am not afraid to fail the first or fifth time. I teach my students that failure is just the start of learning and luckily I get to model that often haha #TLAP#bookcamppd

A2: Finding a #PLN on twitter and blogging to reflect on my practice have helped build my confidence in my own strengths and have identified the areas where I need to grow. #bookcamppd

A2: Roll with those crazy ideas that pop into your head, if it goes south, admit it and move along. Being transparent makes it okay and S's will be open to trying new things with you as an example. #tlap#bookcamppd
A2. Creating far-reaching, new initiatives in education sometimes requires pirates from various backgrounds who understand different pieces of the puzzle and together can move mountains. #BookCampPD
I have taken the "hooks" that I am comfortable w/ & purposefully place them in my PD & then added one or two more that I think are a challenge for me. Also, surrounding myself with supportive, idea driven educators has helped me "Pirate-up" my leadership at school #bookcamppd
A2 Love this question!! I access my inner PIRATE by asking myself what's going to get me and those around me fired up with enthusiasm. Then I nurture it, tap into my courage, & with an amazing crew of colleagues make it a mission. #bookcamppd
A2: not afraid to try something new. unfortunately that comes with failed lessons but am learning to listen to Ss feedback to tweak activities.. forever a learner #cantstopwontstop#bookcamppd
A2. My inner pirate is there screaming ideas and ways to help others; while others are screaming "the safe way to make others happy". When I listen to that inner pirate, (it's not always successful) but is worth the try! #bookcamppd
A2) My inner pirate is best accessed when I channel my students' energy & the things that they love, and bring that into our learning. I'm currently dabbling in gamification, & they r loving it.#bookcamppd
I have found that #twitter and my PLN have encouraged me to try new things. I see great ideas and think how can I bring that into my classroom. #BookCampPD
#tlap has encouraged us all to take risks and try new things! Be the pirate who will implement a hook or a different way of lesson planning, all keeping students at the forefront! @burgessdave#bookcamppd
A2 I am intentional about stepping out of my comfort zone. I know that when it’s uncomfortable that’s when I’ll grow the most. It’s difficult at times, but I do it BRAVELY knowing it’s what’s best. #BookCampPD
A2: Reflecting every day -- How can I be better for students? Asking ?s, push thinking, and trying new strategies -- taking a risk for Ss & Ts
#BookCampPD@burgessdave#tlap
Good morning #bookcamppd A1: After years of being disillusioned by data collection, APPR, standardized testing, etc, this book brought back the importance of teaching children through engaging lessons. It has certainly changed how I’m approaching everything in my classroom.
That's a great lesson, I model this all the time. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don't. It's all about the learning and growing. The process! #bookcamppd
A2: I am not afraid to fail the first or fifth time. I teach my students that failure is just the start of learning and luckily I get to model that often haha #TLAP#bookcamppd
A2 I am intentional about stepping out of my comfort zone. I know that when it’s uncomfortable that’s when I’ll grow the most. It’s difficult at times, but I do it BRAVELY knowing it’s what’s best. #BookCampPD
A3: Young people have so much going on. School isn't always their first priority. ;) We need to "preheat the grill" in order to explain WHY and get students to want to learn, then help the learning STICK. #bookcamppd
A2 Love this question!! I access my inner PIRATE by asking myself what's going to get me and those around me fired up with enthusiasm. Then I nurture it, tap into my courage, & with an amazing crew of colleagues make it a mission. #bookcamppd
A3: All about building that curiosity. Like any good cliffhanger. Gets you wanting to turn the page and read on. I want my school day to be more of a page turner. #tlap#bookcamppd
A2: Sometimes being the only one doing something can make you question your choices=> embrace challenging the status quo, leverage the support of a #pln, and enjoy taking risks! #bookcamppd
A2: I access my inner pirate by taking lead from my students interests and building lessons around their interests. My PLN on Twitter & prof. reading has pushed me to be more of a risk taker. True learning happens for Ss and Ts when they dive into new water together! #bookcamppd
Not sure how T's preheat - perhaps running new lessons by your PLN during team meeting | Asking Ss | communicating with your Administrator? #BookCampPD
A3. Best example I can think of about "pre-heating" the lesson is need for background knowledge - i.e. student in Florida would need lots of info about ice fishing in Minnesota! #BookCampPD
A2: I am joining various Twitter communities so I can learn/try new teaching strategies; I am trying new edtech tools with my students that educators have raved about; & I'm attending various PD outside my content area. #bookcamppd

A3 An open mind is essential to help SS internalize the info. By preheatin the grill you are setting them up for success. I talk about priming the pump in my class. Gotta be ready to receive the knowledge or we are wasting our time. #bookcamppd
A3 Careful planning ... many think that the best ideas come in the shower the morning of or on the drive to work (I used to) ... now I know that best learning lessons come when I strategically plan them (then maintain flexibility in the lesson for teachable moments) #BookCampPD
I think #tlap has allowed so many of us to find our "inner Pirate". We knew it was there, we saw glimpses of it, but @burgessdave helped that pirate COME OUT!!!!! #bookcamppd
I’m jumping in late but #TLAP changed the game for me after reading in my first year! Fun fact: it’s even better after you’ve seen @burgessdave in person, then you really sense the passion in the words!! #bookcamppd
A3 If you don't preheat the grill you're gonna ruin a good steak, likewise if you don't preheat a lesson you won't have engaged kids and ruin the lesson. #bookcamppd
A2: I like to create interesting experiences for my students that connect to higher level thinking. I always offer it out for others to try, but if other classes aren't interested I sail away anyway! #tlap#bookcamppd#bethewildcard#makeyourownpath

A3 it's the aroma, the sizzle, the site. All of those hooks that kind of make your mouth water for what's coming next. Our kids should be running into the classroom to find out those things, the what next. #bookcamppd
A2 I am intentional about stepping out of my comfort zone. I know that when it’s uncomfortable that’s when I’ll grow the most. It’s difficult at times, but I do it BRAVELY knowing it’s what’s best. #BookCampPD
A3: I ask "Are you ready?" Like a silly amount of times... and then I ask "are you ready?" Then become distracted. And then ask again. Got to make teaching as much fun for me as I did for the kids! #bookcamppd#tlap#lovequestions
A3- preheating my lessons keeps my kids engaged for several weeks. And they remember all the crazy, silly things we do that connect to our lessons. This is how we get the buy in for #lifelonglearners#BookCampPD
A3: "Sparks" engage Ss & gets their attention & gets them excited about learning. Setting the stage is key to developing the love for learning #BookCampPD@burgessdave#tlap
A3: Giving them a preview of what's coming next. Even if you're completely secretive, they want to know more!! I "accidentally" left my @flipgrid screen open and they saw, and started asking questions... #bookcamppd
A3: My “preheat” method is knowingly students to be able to provide exactly what they need. THIS is the only way to be intentional with providing what benefits them! #bookCampPD
If we don’t preheat, the end product won’t turn out the same- it might take longer to get there, it might not come out the way we intended #BookCampPD#tlap
A2 “Be courageous enough to take risks; we grow from leaving a place of comfort to a place of growth. It’s were we thrive!” ~Gist & Woodard ☠️ #bookcamppd
A2: It certainly hasn’t been easy accessing my inner pirate....at times it’s been intimidating. However, I keep pushing myself to try new things! It’s clearly been worth it. #bookcamppd
This is absolutely 100% what stands out to me the most about #tlap and I share it often! We also have to preheat the grill for staff!:) #bookcamppd#leadlap

A3: I feel like lots of kids are lacking a natural curiosity these days. We need to "preheat the grill" to give them that missing spark! #tlap#BookCampPD
A2:I have found that #Twitter and my PLN have encouraged me to grow as an educator. I see great ideas and think how can I bring that into my classroom? Why can’t my kids do this too? #bookcamppd
A3. Framing what we do for Ss helps so they know the WHY and how it relates to other steps. I like to collect questions, brainstorm & address fears before jumping into things w/them. Lots of reflection too. #bookcamppd
A3: Also - One good word written on the board which connects to the lesson can do wonders. One I remember for my 1st graders - it was the word diligent. They were not only amazed at the length of that word but what it could mean. We adopted it as "our word" #bookcamppd#tlap
Yes! Moving from their individual Point A to Point B -- growth in their learning by getting out of their comfort zone -
not being afraid to fail.... #BookCampPD#tlap
A2: Rebecca, Elementary Principal from DE, jumping in late! #tlap has inspired many of my PD sessions for staff! I also enjoy using costume hooks which get Ss excited about reading! 📚☠️⚓️#bookcamppd@burgessdave
A3: Building anticipation makes kids eager and excited to come to school. I used to “keep things secret” to not create a distractions but now I promote and build excitement every chance I get! #TLAP#bookcamppd
A3: Preheat the grill be motivating student interest in what you'll be learning and doing. Build the excitement and the anticipation so that students are ready to jump in. #bookcamppd

A3: Pre-heating the grill helps breed natural curiosity and engagement - when Ss feel there are real reasons to learn what they are learning they invest! Intentional instructional moves tell Ss "we aren't doing this for no reason" #bookcamppd
A3: I just got an idea from this question. Showing up at school dressed like a coach for our next PD session on coaching will probably get Ss and Ts asking some questions before we get to the end of the day! #bookcamppd
I have to ditch out a little early today.Great chat this morning #bookcamppd thank you @burgessdave for being here today at for all you've done for the education community! Have a great week everybody.

Loving all the responses, insights, examples and pictures. You guys are amazing! Besure to follow and gain new PLN members this morning! #bookcamppd@burgessdave@mjjohnson1216
A2: I trust children's ideas. We pose thoughts & questions abt new inquiries & how they believe we can best lrn. We collaborate & make lists of what we'll need to move forward. They are totally invested - because it's their lrng (and mine, too!) #bookcamppd
I think many of the big publishers will have to evolve and adapt or they will become increasingly irrelevant and you'll see more of the non-traditional models pop up. #bookcamppd They have been slow to shift.
A3: You got to get the kids interested. Lets me honest how interesting is WED to 4th graders, but show they pictures of amazing landscapes that WED has caused and they are in aww....BAM hooked! #bookcamppd
A3: Preheating is important because we need to get Ss excited, curious and motivated. When Ss are invested in learning our lessons have endless possibilities! Ss become intrinsically motivated and student achievement increases! #bookcamppd

A3 I've had the honor of seeing @burgessdave in person explain the importance of preheating the grill- best two min of PD ever - Ss, Ts, and Admin deserve the best learning experiences possible #bookcamppd

I think the movement towards #geniushour style learning opportunities and teaching innovation and entrepreneurship in schools like class of @DonWettrick#bookcamppd More choice and voice for kids.
A3. Preheat the grill by getting to know your students on a personal level. Let them know you care in order to build trust. I have found their desire to learn has increased tremendously. #BookCampPD
