Hello, #sschat! Tonight is night one of the Switch-A-Roo between sschat and #worldgeochat! Tonight we are looking at how we can incorporate geography into the history curriculum. Introduce yourself, where you're from, and what you teach :)
I'm Chris, one of the #worldgeochat moderators & fan of #sschat (even if I don't always make it).
7th grade Global Studies in suburban Chicago! Looking forward to this chat!
Hi everyone! Ed, 7th grade world geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I also am a co-moderator of #worldgeochat Exited for this 2 day crossover event! #sschat
I'm Michael one of the #SSChat mods. I teach US & World History in MA and my favorite type map brings me to pirate treasure (bonus points if it is on a ship).
Do you want the list in alphabetical order by the state or capital? Also, would you like my lists color coded to the different regions of the US as well... also, Dela-Where? #sschat

Did you know that if the last Ice Age had played out just a bit differently than it did (the ice had advanced a bit short of where it actually did), the Great Lakes would not have formed, & the Ohio Valley would have been inaccessible from the East coast. (1) #sschat
Rachael, joining from CA. Middle school social studies and I'm glad I can participate tonight because my geo integration could always be a focus area. #sschat

A1 because geography also deals with the movement of people, patterns of migration, and the changes in the surroundings and how these ultimately affect human interaction #sschat
A1: Geography is WAYYY more than maps. It’s the study of humans, movement, and environmental interaction. Anyone who thinks it’s just maps has never had a good geo experience. ITS EVERYWHERE #sschat
A1: I know we are all joking (and it's always fun to poke at), but geography is about identifying how our earth and population actually coincide. It's how people of the past dealt with their land without technology, and it's how the land influences our lifestyles #sschat
A1: Geography can literally explain almost everything. From the reasons why a culture is nomadic to the integration of technology to the spread of ideas throughout time. Geography, if understood can help Ss see why the world is how it is. #sschat
Thanks Bill, I hope it was clear the joking around was sarcastic in nature more than anything else. The first project I do with my students is an exploration of our local area using the 5 Themes of Geography... I get it, just having a bit of fun. #sschat
A1 I think a big part of studying geography is to be able to make informed decisions about the future by studying what is happening in the world #sschat
Geography is how the world works and why it works the way it does. You can't understand history if you don't understand geography & those 2 areas impact every other area of study #sschat
A1. Because Russians are buying up high rise apartments in Miami Beach, hoping to sell them before they are under water - real water. Just a practical little example. #sschat
A1) Geography incorporates factors from the Four Worlds. Politically land = power. Economically geo. can determine trade. Socially geo. impacts migration. Geography often reflects longtsanding cultural traditions/legacy #sschat
I have my students outline & color code US Regions when we learn about the geographic theme of region. I then challenge them to come up with another regionalization scheme and give reasons as to why they grouped states together differently. #sschat
A1: Geography influences lifestyles and migration. If you look at geography and the environment it can lead to a deeper understanding of beliefs/culture, economy, dialect, war, trade etc. I think to understand what is going on its imporant to know the geography #sschat
A1 Geography is about the spatial, places, regions, cultures, human-environment interactions. It is the MOTHER DISCIPLINE. Like the saying goes, "Without Geography We're Nowhere!: #sschat
A1
Geography is what explains WHY people are where they are. Geography helps us understand history, economics, and every other social science. It connects the world! #sschat#worldgeochat

A1: In our course we not only address the physical geography but we also examine global issues & current events, we look at history and culture, there is also civics and history too. So much beyond maps which is a small but important part. #sschat
Geography helps children learn just how connected we are globally. It also allows them to understand the importance of geography in other subjects such as economics, math, science, government, etc. #sschat

A1: Geography is huge... One of the first projects I do with my Ss is using the 5 Themes of Geography (Something new) as a lens to examine where we live (something familiar). It gets them applying new knowledge, to something familiar. #sschathttps://t.co/C89dczrF92#sstlap
I recently read this book that speaks to this. I highly recommend it. Also, many sections could be very educational for students. https://t.co/m7BpOTC8db#sschat
Love this answer. Ss really see the interconnected nature of geography when I question whether or not Europe should be considered its own continent. #sschat
A2: Understanding the impacts of physical features, climate, natural resources on populations; understanding WHY people move to locations; it's all about making connections #sschat
A2: Cultural awareness and empathy! We just did a virtual tour of a house in Japan and one of my Ss said that the home was "weird". This prompted a discussion on weird v. different. We need to get the Ss to see that the world is so diverse. #sschat
A2 Spatial skills, cross-cultural awareness, understanding how humans impact environment & vice versa, understanding physical geo impact on economics, politics, etc. The list could go on & on. Maps are just one small part of geography (the mother discipline) #sschat
A2
If you go back to the old 5 themes of geography, understanding place, movement, human-environment interaction, and region are all more important than location (which sadly gets most geography attention). Seeing how one local connects to another!
#sschat#worldgeochat
A2 I think geography ss have to be able to develop/ask relevant questions. Have to be able to interpret a variety of charts and graphics. Have to be able to communicate info in a variety of ways. #sschat
A2: Understanding cardinal directions, demographics, understanding terrain, types of land-forms and bodies of water, understanding boundaries and the historical aspect of geography. Understanding how languages and dialects are often concentrated geographically.
#sschat
In terms of skills we address sourcing info, cross checking info, close reading, writing to inform as well as for argument, analyzing data, presentations skills, and civic discourse to name a few. #sschat
You really want another gold star, don't you. Yes, Mary-Owen, migration patterns are essential for geography! And there's more than one migration route! #sschat#worldgeochat
Interesting read. Especially the part comparing current photo with historical one. #sschat
In China, Photo of Trade Talks Embodies ‘Young’ Country Passing Aging U.S. https://t.co/fL8ay6op8z
A2 noticing global trends. Studying the world by regions helps see patterns such as increased urbanization and desertification and their impacts on humans. #sschat

A2: To mimic what others have said cultural awareness and empathy. Being able to evaluate the why of something. What factors led to it, even if you disagree with the choice, understanding the WHY something has occurred is an important skill to have. #sschat
Quick drop-in on #sschat to share a human geography activity I made for evaluating energy sources. It’s a variation on “Chopped” - https://t.co/sv9wwFcLxU

A2: Geography also really helps to dig deeper into the why some cultures are the way they are. What's the deal with yurts in semi-nomadic pastoral cultures... Why do Inuits have different clothes & diets than Polynesians... etc #sschat
A2 appreciating the geography of your own country. I get major face palm moments when my students don't know the locations of different provinces. #sschat

I so agree with this! My Ss need to where the states are located and what makes them different before we begin our world travels together. I like to think we're expanding their horizons from local to national to global! #sschat
A3 when teaching World War II in the Philippines, I showed them a map of the Bataan Death March. It gave my students a sense of how difficult the march was. #sschat
A3 Using primary source maps from a period to see how people perceived world, analyze traditional historical primary sources thru a geo lens using these Qs https://t.co/znjOleqvrT#sschat
A3: Examining global movements & interconnectedness, from the origins of humanity in Africa & our spread across the globe, to the global trade networks following the Age of Exploration. #sschat
A3 My Ss often ask why are we looking at history in a modern geography and global issues class. I always advise in order to understand our present you need to look at how we got here. #sschat
A3: for me, maps are so essential to understanding the why behind cultural, technological, and material transfers. They give a visual that allows Ss to see who interacts where and how geography promotes these interactions. #sschat
A3: EVERY. ANCIENT. LESSON! Taught ancient civilizations before & talked about the importance of the land every day. No computer imaging meant they had to work with the land around them. How did they overcome obstacles? How did invasions create cross-cultures? EVERYTHING! #sschat
A3: World History begs to be integrated with Geography. For instance, I have used geographic concepts to aid students in understanding the advantages that England had during the Industrial Revolution or why Partitioning India was such a problem. Just two examples! #sschat
A3 population distribution can explain the spread of trade and disease. Why did the Black Death spread so much quickly in Europe than in Asia? Geography! #sschat
A3: I can't help but think about the ways land played a factor in the major wars. And how the groups took advantage of land for the sake of empire! #sschat
Great stuff on modern wars being fought over resources, too. I plan on reading this over the summer that has everything to do with this. https://t.co/V8ybiBZT0p#sschat
yep -- I don't think you can teach world history w/o geography. So much of world history is dependent the geography of a location. #sschat#worldgeochat

A3 One of our favorite recent resources on world history/geography comes from one of our educators, who used place names to trace the path of the Vikings in the UK. Love it. #sschathttps://t.co/56cfb74daT
A4: Talk about the "global sneaker." The fact that most of our belongings come from different locations around the world. Discuss standard of living, lack or abundance of resources, poverty and how it connects to the land #sschat
A4: examining what goods are produced and for whom, competition for those resources and markets, trade agreements, labor pools and conditions, and how are world is more interconnected than ever before #sschat
A4 Look at transportation routes in countries/regions & how impact economy. For example, physical geography & lack of connecting routes is one econ impact on Asia #sschat
Supply and Demand of natural resources. The impacts on developed and developing countries. Agricultural vs industrial focus. Even possibly the economics to help clean up environmental waste because of industry! #sschat#worldgeochat
Q4 - I believe geo and econ go well together . Geo can shape economics -- landlocked or not, resources or not, etc. Add in GDP, GNP discussions as well. #sschat
A4: I think doing something involving the value of a dollar around the world would be great here. Show the Ss the money's worth can change due to inflation in countries #sschat
We do a 9th grade local geo lesson with actual dirt from their backyards, soil maps from USGS, and farming history in our rural state (census, primary sources). They do love bringing in the dirt. #sschat#worldgeochat
A4) Global awareness lesson where the continents' geography is scaled and taped out on the floor in order to show differences in GDP. Students then physically stand within their scaled space and if you introduce food rations, that creates a crystal clear picture! #sschat
A4: Adam Smith suggested different nations would be better versed or more efficient at particular industries & therefore out compete others. He's not wrong there. Exploring industry/economic hubs would be an easy & great way to integrate Geo into Econ #sschat
A4: Its an abstract principle, but the idea of "path dependence" is essential to both economics and geography. Decisions from the past impact the range of choices future generations will have. This applies to resources, land development, political boundaries and more. #sschat
A4 We’re going to have a terrifically relevant study guide on the geography of economic inclusivity at https://t.co/HNgQuF9B9H tomorrow morning. Trust me on this. #worldgeochat#sschat
A4 Could use Circle of Viewpoints to identify current players (or victims) of trade embargoes. How does an Iowa farmer react? A Chinese technology worker? A Mexican auto worker? #sschat
If anyone will be doing Westward Expansion anytime soon... Summative task is to put together an annotated map of US Expansion from 1790 - 1853. #sschathttps://t.co/RVFJuhh6tM
Making dinner soon, bowing out. If you all could help me out and retweet, my hockey team is raising money from cancer. Thanks! https://t.co/PoHugfYSlu#sschat
Hello, #sschat! Tonight is night one of the Switch-A-Roo between sschat and #worldgeochat! Tonight we are looking at how we can incorporate geography into the history curriculum. Introduce yourself, where you're from, and what you teach :)
A4
This is where the maps come in. Geography explains what products are available in certain countries. Then there is Geography stole in globalization. That is everything! #sschat
Coming in late, but our guiding question in 6th grade is "How do economies affect the rise and fall of empires?" It's geographically driven by trade, migration, and war. #sschat
spoken like a true human geographer -- seriously, if more people realized how connected geo was to all other subjects it would be a required course everywhere. #sschat#worldgeochat
Economics and geography go hand-in-hand. Our approach is human-centered geography. It puts content into context and directly relates to economics. #sschat
A5 we examine not only the format of other countries governments but we also look at human rights and how those governments promote or infringe upon those rights #sschat
A2: Aside from maps, students need to also understand the ins and outs of societies. Why do societies interact with the environment and the cultures around them. #WorldGeoChat#sschat
This is an absolute eyeopener for students. combine with Dollar Street, Material World and Hungry Planet posters for a rock star lesson, especially with 9th and 10th graders as they begin to work and become real consumers #sschat#worldgeochat
Interaction between countries/empires. Good and bad. Understand why various governments formed bc of their geography. (Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome) Why we have districts, counties, regions. #sschat#worldgeochat
A5: Civics is ultimately about empowering students to make better their lives and the lives of others. Geographical studies of wealth distribution, elections, points of view, health and more give our kids the tools they need to be great citizens. #sschat
A5 - this is where human rights and global goals can come in. What is our civic responsibility? What can we do to improve justice at our local and global scales? #sschat
A3: #worldgeochat#sschat geography, climate, river behaviour directly influenced where people settled; lower hierarchy needs met --> societies. Once settled, geo played a part in self actualisation-down to building materials, gods worshipped, relationships built, etc...
A3: I know everyone gets down on geo being just about maps, but without map understanding, students wouldn’t be able to understand why countries go to war, why civilizations start where the do, etc. #WorldGeoChat#sschat
A4: as someone posted already being able to understand geography helps students in economics understand resource distribution which leads to understandings in supply and demand, production possibility, and international trade. #WorldGeoChat#sschat
We just had a community read on this one. #sschat
Some of My Best Friends Are Black: The Strange Story of Integration in Americ... https://t.co/RSmt36D0UL via @amazon
😳Going to use this to create a lesson about the Great Compromise! Have Ss figure our representation! Use as a starter to discussion about representation in both US His and Human Geo! #sschat#worldgeochat
Geography helps with understanding relationships between empires and nations as they rise and fall...especially climate, military strategy, imports/exports, etc. #sschat
A5(2): Students in civics courses need geography to understand concepts like Federalism. Education spending, abortion access, and gun control laws all vary by state. #sschat
Split up class into groups, each group studies one region of the country and how the geography effected native Americans living there. They were not all nomadic people who lived in tepees #sschat
A5: understanding governments is also a part of geo! Understanding why countries choose a specific type of government also ties into boundaries and geo features, & resources...once we understand why they choose we can study aspects. I could go on and on! #WorldGeoChat#sschat
A6 Where do the population groups within the US come from? When did they arrive? How did they arrive? What have they contributed? https://t.co/d9TmYsvv0X#sschat
All Westward expansion, Imperialism, foreign entanglements, embargo’s, America’s Wars, migrations, development of colonial regions. #sschat#worldgeochat
A6: Manifest destiny as someone already posted, but also understanding economics of the country, the civil war, industrialization, American revolution, the Cold War! All aspects of geography!!!! #WorldGeoChat#sschat
#sschat Colonization would be another intersting topic. How/why did European countries use American resources and how did settlement impact social/cultural identities in the US today?
Sorry I'm late, #sschat#worldgeochat! Melissa from Atchiosn, KS. 6-8 Soc Studies. Was just going to watch the last few mins but would like to chime in!
Feeling so happy I was able to jump into tonight’s #WorldGeoChat!!! I’m giddy like a school girl when talking about the intertwining of social studies!!! #WorldGeoChat#sschat
Absolutely! Slavery took off in the south because the geography was conducive to large plantations of labor intensive crops, whereas the rocky soil & shorter growing seasons in the north were not. While it doesn't explain everything, it's an aspect worth exploring w/Ss #sschat
