Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
Helloooooo! I’m Dakota from Indiana. This might sound weird, but I really like snacking on plain flour tortilla shells 🤤 [gif of tortilla shell rotating on a record player] #UDLchat
I'm a #udl author, consultant, speaker who is totally in love with the framework!! My comfort food is dark, dark, dark chocolate. #udlchat [GIF: stirring melted dark chocolate]
A1: If I'm observing, I have to hear how the T designed the environment and/or lesson. Otherwise, I run the risk of identifying stand-alone practices that aren't backed by a deep understanding of variability, goals, flexibility, choice, and rigor. #UDLchat#KnowTheFramework
Jennifer Pusateri- Universal Design Consultant- University of Kentucky. Hm... Favorite comfort food- popcorn popped in a pot-none of this microwave nonsense. #udlchat
A1: Ss are asking Qs and making suggestions on how the learning environment and/or lesson could be changed to better suit their needs. Everybody is working towards the same goal, but not everybody is doing the same thing! #UDLchat
#udlchat A1 You glance up from teaching and see dotted lines between your curriculum design and the ways that learners have agency and purpose. #udl@CAST_UDL
I know #UDL is happening after I speak to the teacher/instructor and the learners. If the teacher can describe their instructional decision-making with UDL language and the learners can describe the learning goal and why they’re learning something, those are good signs. #UDLchat
I think it comes down to having teachers who are acutely aware of what they’re doing and why. While it is neuroscience, it’s not “rocket science,” so any teacher can implement it if they are trained to be intentional with backwards planning #UDL#UDLchat
A2: options, flexibility, meta-cognition, and a strong belief that every student has something to contribute to the classroom no matter their background or ability #UDLchat
A1: I think a first sign is sustained engagement. Over time it looks like Ss starting to take ownership over choices. As a teacher I also start to know when I see a shift in how I plan. I become more intentional and engaged when planning #UDLchat
A1: I know #UDL is happening when students can explain their learning goals, and they can access the tools they need to achieve them independently #UDLchat
1.) TRAINING! It simply can’t be done if folks don’t know what it is.
2.) Easy to access resources. It’s one thing to know the framework, but where do you get the tools to put it into place?
3.) Collaboration with all classroom adults
#UDL#UDLchat
A2: participation dynamism exercise iterative processes variability the error as a learning process multiple choices evaluation implemented together with learning #UDLchat
A3: First, I need to have designed it into the experience. What happens, happens. And while that's happening, I need to formatively assess my learners so I can see if what I intended is actually occurring!! #UDLchat#udl
A2: In order for #UDL to happen, educators must intentionally design a classroom culture that respects differences, and values risk taking and collaboration #UDLchat
A3: Ss can articulate clearly where they’re at in relation to the goal, and also know what the next steps are on whatever skill we’re learning (even if they achieved the goal of the lesson) #UDLchat
A3: when you can see that all students are understanding and achieving the learning goals set forth. I would also like think that Ss would be enjoying learning. #UDLchat
A3) It does happen if all of the "things" are in place. The Ss are using the tools provided and the T is w/ providing the accomidations for S learning. #udlchat
Well said, Luis. This space MUST include relationship building #UDLchat There is so so much trauma in our schools...and it's not always the "loud" behaviors but the "silent" ones we must attend to always.
I know #UDL has happened when ALL learners have made observable gains, which is determined through observation, formative assessment, and summative assessment #UDLchat
A4: As the learner I wouldn't actually know it's happening since everything is happening so seamlessly. The end result is happening because I'm excited to make it happen. #eme6408#UDLchat
A3: I know #UDL has happened when ALL learners have made observable gains, which is determined through observation, formative assessment, and summative assessment #UDLchat
A4: The learning feels phenomenal b/c I'm challenged but feel safe in taking risks. I look around and see different ways to learn the skill or topic and then I have choice in how I how my new skill/knowledge. My brain is bit tired, but man do I feel good!! #UDLchat
A4: I knew the goal and I have some way to measure my success. Someonehas given me options for how to get there. It is also obvious when I’m in a UDL free environment because I feel a little restricted. #UDLchat

A4: I have options in how I access & practice the skill being learned, and options in how I demonstrate my knowledge. I also feel things are more UDL when I have a say in how things are structured—a vote and representation in my workplace 😉 #UDLchat#RedForEd
A:4 I know what we are doing in class, I’m actually learning and able to communicate what I am learning. No barriers, flexibility and options.
I actually have a positive relationship with the teacher. #UDLchat

A3: when I see students sustaining their effort and persistence towards the goal. They keep going even when it’s challenging. #highexpectations#growthmindset#UDLchat
A3 #udlchat ... continued: When learners are advocating for what they need, know where to go & autonomously accessing what they need to be and feel empowered
A4: When u know u are walking into USABLE space...this being appropriate accommodations, independent access 4 ur diverse needs in learning, accessible protocols of daily routines & changes #UDLchat
A4: I feel confident in myself going to class and comfortable sharing and engaging with others, knowing my thoughts matter and are heard #udlchat#eme6408
A4: Joining in late. I love the responses to this because it inspires me to make sure my learners can say the same thing about my learning environment. Also, it's easy to know when I'm NOT in a UDL environment because my energy is being used to cope and stay engaged. #UDLchat
Q4: #udlchat When I have the opportunity to dive deeply and fully engage in new content or discussion- could look different at different times. #Blessed to do this with amazing colleagues, friends, & learners often
Loved the questions @digitallearnudl for the #UDLchat tonight. Thanks so much for being such a great UDL facilitator tonight. Going to create the Wakelet.
All these great ideas for #UDL beverages have us thirsty! Super thanks to #UDLrockstar@digitallearnudl for another fantastic #UDLchat. Join @DegnerJoni on Mar 6 for the next live chat, and keep using the hashtag for all things UDL. [GIF: "Thank You" in fancy shiny text]
A5: long Island learning tea...a little bit of everything mixed together for everyone. Smooth and tasty as it goes down leaving your brain feeling happy. #UDLchat
"Thus, in #udlchat we recognize that environments can be disabling, rather than immediately seeking to label the child as being "dis" abled."

Forgot to introduct myself for #UDLchat. My name is Jeremy from Brooklyn and my comfort food is goat cheese pizza, of which I ate an entire one for lunch and then felt sick.
