Hi Robert. Glad you're here.
I'm about the same. Ts go back on the 17th.
I taught 1st last year and back to Kinder this year. Great insight teaching both grades.
A1: I have discussions about no matter where we are we want to move forward. Then we pinpoint where we are, and where we're going.
A1: With my Kinders we talk about goals being things we want to do & relate back to fun things like- no training wheels
A1 I prefer incremental, progressive goals that combine S personal & class goals. Constantly moving forward day by day.
It is amazing how much they learn is such a short time.
A1 We talk about goals for so many things we do both academically and for life skills.
I really like the idea of having goals for life skills. Sometimes those are more difficult.
Great illustration. I also love to mark our steps...and think of it as a timeline. We never arrive though. https://t.co/Frot20ZONC
A1: With my Kinders we talk about goals being things we want to do & relate back to fun things like- no training wheels
A1: last yr. we worked on writing goals & talked about how everyone is working on a different goal. had 1:1 to talk about goal.
I really think it's important to stress that everyone has their own goals.
A1 I start off whole group and I model. Then this year I'm conferring at the end of each day we will do a goal a wk
A1 We try to set goals that are transferable. For ex, If it's a writing goal you can work on this goal with any writing you do.
A1: last year we first talked about it during writers workshop.
yes, I noticed b/c Ss where trying to overhear others goals.
Last year I did student led parent conferences. Goal setting was great for that and listening to them tell their Ps was precious.
Yes, Lori! Social, emotional, soulful & academic learning are equally important & inextricably intertwined. https://t.co/UnN6LWgp5a
I really like the idea of having goals for life skills. Sometimes those are more difficult.
Writers workshop is a good place to talk about goals . There are so many there!
Q2: On page 116 there are 4 steps for goal setting.Do you use these steps in your classroom? https://t.co/labyQzpNCO
Yes. It's really hard to collaborate with no social skills.
A1: Like to start with my own goals & let Ss build theirs throughout the year-celebrate when we reach goals
Oooo. That's a good idea. I may have to use that.
Yes- your goal has to be a good fit for you. It might not be the same as your friend's goal.
A2: Need to work on the story part. I also celebrate, but not daily.
The celebration part is important. I like to make a big deal about it.
Yes. The story part is going to be my focus this year.
I did have 2nd graders. I had a folder with things in it. We practiced in class, modeled. I 1st could do it https://t.co/tHKrehyKeV
Terry how did you prepare this for a first grader. I always have kids fo but never had them lead! Love it https://t.co/gpkMUfDvLC
A2 I need to work on the "daily" celebration and reflection part. Probably the area to work on most.
A2: honestly, I've had a difficult time revisiting Ss goals. I'm printing out the steps &putting in plan book & teaching areas
A2: I was thinking about having them celebrate by using to say what their goal was and how they met it.
A2 Need to make more of individual goal celebrations public. Often, my students would celebrate success of peers w/out prompting.
That's a good idea. I definitely need reminders.
A2 I want to work on the story part and the daily celebration and reflection. Need to build in more time for that.
A2: I love the story idea going to try and implement it. I also think it is important for them to keep thier goals close.
I posted our writing goals as a visual tool that everyone could see. Students would often look at goals of peers.
I was trying to figure out the best way. Possibly have them draw out their goal and tape it to their work area?
Did you post on a bulletin board?
Yes, I created a chart that stayed up all year as goals changed.
I was thinking that or leaving a couple pages at the front/back to be goals pages then they can put a sticker when accom
A3: It has to become an intentional part of our instruction. It is up to us to model it and build time for it.
Did they check off when they completed one? I was thinking of something like that.
I also had a chart but revisiting was my downfall :/
BAM!!! That's it. Permission to steal?
I posted reading goals last year, but wasn't good at keeping up.with them when they changed.
Goals were written on post-its. When met it came off and was replaced by another.

A3: I believe that classroom culture plays a big role in becoming a reflective classroom. Have to feel safe to reflect.
A3 I like to end each day with a meeting. A song and then we say 3 thungs we liked about the day. Then we do a dance. A happy time
A3: My goal is for my Ss and myself to blog this year. I created last weekend :)
I want to be in your class. What a great way to send Ss off. I'm sure it makes them eager to come back.
A3: By allowing those discussion to happen, make time to reflect both modeled and let Ss lead as the year goes on
A3 We build the reflection piece into the learning community and it becomes a part of the conversations we have.
I think that's the key for this age especially. It's such a new concept.
Yay! I love Let me know if you need any help. https://t.co/q3jkvuIYkb

. A3. Just finished Purposeful Play a few weeks ago, great teaching points about reflection and using change ?s. For reflection.
Tell me more about change questions.
A3 For me, a lot of reflection has 2 do with slowing down & not feeling pressured to get things done. Being "present" & deliberate.
It would be awesome for K. Super easy and they can video post.
BINGO! This is so true. https://t.co/QQbDWbAqmh
A3 For me, a lot of reflection has 2 do with slowing down & not feeling pressured to get things done. Being "present" & deliberate.
I will look into that. Thanks.
A3 I think this why building in time to share and reflect (and actually using it) is so important.
Kendra, Would love to hear more about "change questions". https://t.co/cETFlyIods

Yes. Yes. Yes. That took me a while to figure out. But so true. https://t.co/CoOs5w7G1b

anchor charts are used to help give Ss language to reflect. I.e. "What did work?" "What could I do instead?"
Ladies I am anxious for tomorrows first day. Stepping out early and going to run. Have a beautiful night!
A4: I reflect a lot w/co-workers, quiet time on the way home, shower
https://t.co/mObOLiqVAV
A4: I think asking Qs of oneself. Why? What went well? What would you change? What did you learn? How could you do it next time? 31stchat
Q4: draw pictues at the end of the day. What went well today? what challenged me? Can also use stances https://t.co/mAM6ZfgpPC
Q4 A lot of our reflections were problem solving. Academic and social problem solving. We worked hard on self-regulation last year.
A4: I reflect a lot w/ co-workers but my best time is mornings when everything is quiet.
on change outcomes. Just examples of possible ?s.
Drawing tells me so much. The Ss usually tell me more with a drawing.
A4: I think envisioning is part of reflection too. Very much here as we go back.
A4 Allowing stopping points to happen at any time of the day to reflect and problem solve, even during lessons/teaching time.
A4 I love what the book says about not just looking forward but how important it is to look back.
There are times I do that. Especially for a S that has been struggling. I like for them to share how they reach a goal
Also remembering that they will get so much out of the reflection, maybe more than just curriculum https://t.co/iTj4XptxE9
A4 Allowing stopping points to happen at any time of the day to reflect and problem solve, even during lessons/teaching time.
A4 We reflect during writer's workshop. What am I doing well? What can I work on?
thanks! The anchor chart I was thinking about is in this post! (Book is great btw).
A5: Give them prompts. Model it. Do it orally. Celebrate when they do, help them to see how it helps them.
May have to add it to my reading pile. :)
A5 We show them how to become self-reflective by being self-reflective and modeling what that looks like "for real".
A5: One thing I do orally is we sit and share What strategy did you use, how did it help you? Can do this in any subj.
A5: My struggle in Kinder is to help them understand why they are setting goals.
I think going back and connecting to how reflecting before helped us in a new problem/situation. https://t.co/rn5IdBLzEe
Have a first grader come in and do a task as a model...challenge them, do you want to be able to do that? https://t.co/ddRLx0GfXc
A5: My struggle in Kinder is to help them understand why they are setting goals.
A5 Show them how we look back. "Remember yesterday when we…" Can't go too far back with 1st graders, lol.
A5: Record them often, then look back at where we were, then talk about the steps that moved them forward.
Yes, positive self-talk. Many have the negative down. We need to help with the positive.
Yes, Also think of building block towers and talking about what we did when it fell? Same thing or different? Why?
a5. Yes! I think we have to remember we are laying a foundation for a school journey.
A5 Charts with questions to ask or sentence stems are great scaffolds. Also lots of modeling what it looks like to reflect.
Boy that's for sure. It's the best when all of a sudden you notice the change.
A5: I also need to remember that we are introducing a lot of this. Continue to model & they will pick it up.
Love the charts as tools & scaffolds. https://t.co/cLkC8Gkua4
A5 Charts with questions to ask or sentence stems are great scaffolds. Also lots of modeling what it looks like to reflect.
A5 We already do a lot of this but didn't always have a name for the work we were doing! Now we have the stances to build on! Yay!
The stances will help me focus. Keep me on task.
Yes, me too! This is just what I've been looking for. https://t.co/oAYsQ9hIgC
The stances will help me focus. Keep me on task.
A6: The stances. This will certainly be a part of my room. The first chapters were my favorite. It goes so well with
A6: I really like chapter 10. Talking about conferences.
I love the conversations in the book. Especially how students take turns speaking. "One voice!"
page 117 has a Lean Vs Meaty Goals chart. I have that tabbed.
I have that highlighted. I will be using the "one voice" phrase.
https://t.co/WtK8dI3oZq
I love the conversations in the book. Especially how students take turns speaking. "One voice!"
A6 Taking turns speaking w/out raising hands and "Open-mind listening" will be on the agenda this year.
I also thought the use of the "cuffs" was interesting.
A6 Ch. 11 speaks about valuing the journey and much as the destination. I'm going to post that somewhere as a reminder.
Ladies, have a great week. All those starting back, be blessed! I have some things to do for my day one.
Thanks so much Terry. I always learn great things from you. Have a great week.
Probably this best thing about the book is these are all things I can implement immediately in my classroom.
Thanks and everyone for another amazing book chat! Enjoy the rest of your summer or what's left of it!
