A1 – The “why” is the reason for everything. It leads everything else. If you don’t have an understanding of the “why”, the “what” and the “how” will not have the same meaning or power. #bookcamppd
A1 spoiler ... I’ve read the first 1/2 of this book by @simonsinek ... vision drives more motivation than what you do or how lucky you do it #BookCampPD

A1. When I saw this graphic, I began reflecting .... how many Twitter users know why, even though I am retired, I adore being the spark in professional learning for others?
Makes me wonder if your students and families know WHY you go to school each day?
#BookCampPD
A1: It means that if we dont know WHY we are doing something...then our HOW and WHAT are not going to be as effective...or meaningful. #goldencircle#bookcamppd
Q2. The author states, "Once you know why you do what you do, the question is, how will you do it?" What processes do you use to accomplish your "why?" #BookCampPD
A1: The adventurous part of me wants to respond with, "why not" - but to me it means having a purpose: whether it's my purpose for doing what I do, or if it is the purpose of a lesson or an activity. And, I love answering kids when they ask, "why are we doing this?"#BookCampPD
The author further states, “Once you know WHY you do what you do, the question is HOW will you do it? It’s the discipline to never veer from your cause, to hold yourself accountable to HOW you do things; that’s the hardest part” (Ch 5, p 66). #BookCampPD
A2 I unpack standards before then with my sts ... we discuss the how so they have input too ... we also reflect on our progress through 1 on 1 conferences #BookCampPD
Q2. The author states, "Once you know why you do what you do, the question is, how will you do it?" What processes do you use to accomplish your "why?" #BookCampPD
A2 – Articulate your “why” and find those that will help and be inspired by it. This will help you develop the “what” and “how” and keep you focused on the "why". #bookcamppd
Q3 The author tells a story of
two stonemasons (Ch 6, P 94-95). The people do exactly the same work, but 1 considers it to be a job while the the other sees it as a calling. Why do the two see their work differently? How do you see your work- job, career or calling? #BookCampPD
A3. One stonemason understands the why for his work. He understands he is building a cathedral in which people will worship. He is part of a larger calling. The other stonemason hasn’t started with why. He understands the what, stonework, but sees it merely as a job. #BookCampPD
A3 I truly believe there is a difference between a passion/calling where you love what you do vs a job where you go through the motions for a paycheck. Having the opportunity to be where your calling is truly is gold. #BookCampPD
A3 my calling is to teach ... my work is impacting sts ... I don’t get distracted by outside garbage ... i focus on my passion & make wise choices - don’t martyr, just focus in the moment #BookCampPD

Q4. Sinek discusses five leadership competencies: leads others, builds trust, leads by example, communicates, and builds a positive environment. Which of these is most important to you as a leader. #BookCampPD
A3– One sees the “what and how”. He is completing his job but doesn't have passion. The other sees the “why” which empowers him to be more fulfilled. Teaching is my calling, but after many years of education and cont. PD it has also shaped into my career. #bookcamppd
A3: A job is what you do to pay the bills; a career is a lifetime commitment to a job or a calling; a calling is doing what you're meant to do. For me, educating students is a calling. I know, because when I'm not doing that, I miss it it - and them. #BookCampPD
I think that is one of my challenges - even though I am "retired" I feel like the work of trying to improve education will never be finished. #BookCampPD
A2: First and foremost, if I am not happy, I cannot reach learners. So taking care of myself is how I can help my learners also be happy and succeed. #BookCampPD
A4 Positive environments allow people to feel comfortable, welcomed, and take risks. This is something I hope to be able to do daily for others. #BookCampPD
A4: Lead by Example. When you do that, you build trust which builds a positive environment which promotes good communication which inspires others to follow. #BookCampPD
A4 IMO communicates - with careful & full communication my leader can build trust, positivity, leadership, & example ... @SparanoBHS is my leader & she is authentic and transparent which builds trust, etc #BookCampPD

When a teacher seemed overwhelmed, I would encourage them to slow down during the day, look around the classroom and see how many student's had smiling faces and were laughing. Joyful Learners! #BookCampPD
A4 – I love his quote “there are leaders and there are those who lead”. I think when you lead you have to have a balance of all of these competencies. I don’t think one can outweigh the others all the time. #bookcamppd
A4. After reading this, I certainly wondered why I never asked one of my supervisors what their WHY was when I began working in a school.
Reflecting back now, it surely would have made a huge impact on my actions. #BookCampPD
A job can have an ending...like the job of editing report cards. A calling incorporates aspects of a job and career, resulting in no finish line. #BookCampPD
