#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight we plan on developing strategies for student's winter packets whether they are for academics or suggested activities for enrichment
I was informed that some jurisdictions don't give actual homework during the holiday break so this opens the door for suggested enrichment activities that your students can do with their families over the holidays #HipHopEd
weekly #HipHopEd chat starts now (9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific) and runs for the next hour. join the convo by following + tweeting with the hashtag #HipHopEd
As educators, we must strike the crucial balance between relaxing/self-care and reflecting on personal areas of improvement for when we return to the work. #HipHopEd
The winter break is a chance to challenge students to visit various sites in their communities that they may otherwise not visit. (Give extra credit) #hiphoped

The holidays can be about traditions and expressions of family and being together; allow students to present this once they return to school in a way that they choose #HipHopEd
Yessir! Realizing specifically tho that being alive and vibrant requires self-reflection and not just distancing ourselves completely from the work (which is often what happens) #HipHopEd
for many students, holidays are a tough time: no access to the food, shelter, heat, medication, caring adults that they (hopefully) have at school. + no presents...
#HipHopEd
Appreciate the zeal for your work, but you know we try to stay on topic so do you have any suggestions to offer that align with topic for the evening #HipHopEd
Indeed. Also for many a reminder of those they've lost, or who have left, their lives. A known time for mental health issues to resurface #SeasonalEffects#HipHopEd
Interesting. As a parent who freelances and has the flexibility to be at home over school breaks, I hated when my kids had hw over break. That said, if it had actually been meaningful/engaging, it could have been relaxing > taxing. #HipHopEd

Yes so one thing we should do is do some community mapping to make some suggestions or bring resources to the school to help make sure our students are straight for the break #HipHopEd
Getting on a little late tonight! Glad to be with the #HipHopEd fam! Celebrating passing qualifying today, officially a doctoral candidate, so now writing the dissertation!!!
Reach out and identify local efforts that may provide free food and in some instances toys over the holidays and work with the parents to inform them of the opportunities in a way that is dignified #HipHopEd

Yeah, I don’t give hw ever over breaks. Never have. I do think enrichment projects, independent reading or family suggestions could be great though. #HipHopEd
Use your or your family member’s phone to take pictures of nature, family, etc. Write a poem, paragraph, or rap describing what you photographed #HipHopEd

I remember doing some research evaluating the effectiveness of a math curriculum, and finding out that there were huge differences in who took pretest & posttest -- so many there for one but living elsewhere for the other! #HipHopEd

Self-reflection is such a key piece in learning how to better engage students, maybe also challenging students to take the time to reflect & giving the space to share when they come back. #HipHopEd
My family and I are going to visit an arts & crafts store with $25 a piece and pick out items to be used to make a collage piece of art that represents a theme that is important to us and then share out as a family #HipHopEd

My Mother-In-Law did a piece using photos that she took of homeless people in NY (w/their permission) & created a piece that presented them with such dignity. When she showed it my wife & I we decided to make it a family activity to replicate #HipHopEd
One of the most common issue i see in education, regardless of if we're talkin teachers, counselors, or admin, is an unwillingness to accept personal responsibility for student issues. We have to self-reflect and do better #HipHopEd

Many students (& teachers) come from dysfunctional families & this time of year can be especially triggering. Send them off on break with reminders to self-care & set boundaries. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/bAiGjFbSKS

Have students identify an album that represents each year that their older family members were the age that student is now. Listen together and talk about what sounds different and the same. Discuss themes etc #HipHopEd
Yup! Important to consider how to advocate for that from diff positions. For example, as a counselor amidst an administration unwilling to take responsibility. #HipHopEd#StudentAdvocates
Yes she is and it is a blessing living with an Artist who uses their craft to communicate with God and to relay back to us what He is saying to her for our benefit #HipHopEd
You're right and this maybe a chance for students and teachers alike to think of ways to reflect on the year's end and project for the year forward in new inventive ways #HipHopEd
If your school or community has organizations that are holding programming over the break, make sure your students have something to do so that they aren’t alone the whole time #HipHopEd#WorkingParents
Interview the oldest family member you know. Provide students with questions that touch on standards and #HipHopEd ex: Which musician do you think was the most influential during your childhood?
If you live anywhere near where you teach or know where your students live, take a trip and just be in the space, not as a teacher but as a person #hiphoped
We have to be critical of why and how we celebrate these holidays. Ask students to reflect on the systems & histories behind it: separation of church & state, capitalism, norming if religion, etc. #hiphoped

Pay attention to your Students to see if there are any behaviors out of the norm that are being triggered by this time of year. It means different things to different people at different times #HipHopEd
Students might miss their regular support systems, too. Share the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 #hiphopedhttps://t.co/MUVa1k5MUf

I never really liked celebrating holidays with the students...I don’t like that Christian holidays always get the most representation...even though by most I would be referred to as Christian...I think...? I’m not sure...lol...we have a tree 🤦🏾♀️ #HipHopEd
first advisory/class after break: make sure we’re thoughtful about the questions we ask—will all students feel included/able to answer about their ‘favorite gift?'
#HipHopEd
And your students to identify their favorite lesson/unit/activity and their least favorite and explain why. The feedback will help you as a teacher learn how your students want to learn #HipHopEd

When they come back: ask students to share their goals & have them commit to helping someone else achieve theirs. Check in periodically. Celebrate accomplishments & collectively problem solve w/those who are struggling. #hiphopedhttps://t.co/j1YmQzlXU3

Especially for college students, have them invite friends over for winter break. Home insecurity is real during holidays. I have God mothers and fathers because my friends opened their doors. #HipHopEd
For our online workshop I’m presenting on technology (plug) and #flipgrid is one thing I suggest using when teachers get back. It can also be used over the break as a way for students to check in and have healthy discussions with peers. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/CzkDUZ75dl
I am a Christian and what I've done that has been very inclusive is simply celebrate "lights" because most of the holidays/traditions during this time of year have symbolic lights #HipHopEd

Or, skip this question altogether. Instead of centering capitalism/consumerism, ask students about a value they practiced or something that happened that they were proud of. #hiphopedhttps://t.co/OKxptasvnq

Thoughtless questions arise when teachers are unaware of the student communities they serve. This is a good reflection activity for teachers to consider as they recharge. #HipHopEd

Students who are food and home insecure during holidays and weekends may not make their needs known. Even when at a residential school, we were not prepared for this during breaks #Hiphoped

It is important to be knowledgeable of the resources in the community and pass the information along and when necessary sign them up to make sure that they have what they need #HipHopEd
...Or maybe a piece of artwork that helps them process and share their own traditions and cultural rituals during this time of year. Like many have said, this isn't always an easy season and looks different for everyone. We should encourage them to process 'out loud'. #HipHopEd
Be bold, ask your students “What should you do over the break to better understand them” and then you get to inform the students of something they should do to better understand you. Make it creative and fun and then share when you return #HipHopEd
Students who are actively working with their counselor/counseling group on an emotionally-themed mixtape will continue to work on tracks over break - utilizing their playlist of beats and notebooks to process new/emerging emotions #HipHopEd
Oh that's a fabulous idea! Getting people together, a chance to exercise, be somewhere warm, get some love from friends and other trusted adults. I love it! #HipHopEd
Indeed, indeed. Even when spaces are offered for students to "voice concerns" they're often just for show. We must prime students to become activists who operate within systems designed for them to fail. #HipHopEd
I really like the idea of allowing students to reflect on, take ownership of, and inspire their own educations. Giving them an opportunity to give me feedback would be great also #ourjourney#hiphoped
If you get to decorate your classroom, create a space where your students can bring something in that gets put up on the wall that represents them and their family for the new year and semester #HipHopEd
Next week will be asking everyone to contribute as we compile the top 20 Hip-Hop songs of 2017 based on being thought provoking and educational. You know we have to put a twist on it #hiphoped
