#4thchat A1 A digital portfolio is an electronic collection of student learning over time. Can be used to publish, assess, and for S-S and T-S feedback. Parent communication as well.
I like that you added the "goals" etc. to your definition of dig portfolio. While I think we talk about goals & it's what we work towards, I hadn't thought to include it. #4thchat Thanks!
A1: An electronic portfolio (also known as an eportfolio, e-portfolio, digital portfolio, or online portfolio) is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the Web. #4thchat
A1: I define digital portfolio as a online way to show/share work. S's upload their own work that they are proud of to show others and their parents. #4thchat
#4thchat A2 Ss are more engaged by posting work to a digital portfolio and will often do retakes of work that they otherwise would just turn in "as is."
A2: Making portfolios digital give you a chance to share to a larger audience in a short amount of time. Owners can also ask for immediate feedback or suggestions. #4thchat
A2: Posting work to a digital portfolio allows it to be viewed by more people, and in some cases commented on. It stops great work from being crumpled up in the bottom of school bags. #4thchat
#4thchat A1 And not all parent communication is the parent using an app at home. We have sped teachers who share students learning during in person IEP meetings. Sometimes that's the first time a parent hears their S read aloud for example.
a2: i think that the biggest benefit that comes from posting student work digitally is that students take more ownership of the work they produce. 2. their parents get to see the work that they are producing in class and feel like they are apart of the classroom #4thchat
#4thchat A2 Another benefit of digital portfolios is that even the quietest students who hardly ever raise their hand post great online portfolio items.
Our Curriculum Coach had a MegaMath night and all the games were oversized! It was wonderful. Students all took home small versions of the games. #4thchat@plnaugle
A2 Allows for a variety of audiences to see the work. Love using @Seesaw to collect work samples but also keep parents informed as to what is happening in our classroom!! #4thchat
#4thchat A3 I find I have to have a mix of labeled/typed annotated photos and audio. Giving feedback on all audio posts can be overwhelming. Sometimes an annotated photo shares the same learning.
A3: One of the major challenges of a digital portfolio is depending on wifi, as well as taking the time to teach students how to upload documents to it! #4thchat#moravianar
A3: Challenges of Digital Portfolios-students don't have devices/internet at home, need to teach digital organization and #DigitalCitizenship Definitely worth the work! #4thchat
#4thchat A3 It's best to include posting to digital portfolios early in the year because there is definitely a learning curve for Ss. But sending Ss tech savvy to 5th/middle school let's them spend more time on learning in the future and not behind on tech skills.
A3: Having enough devices so that all Ss can post their work, setting criteria for what kinds of artifacts should be posted, knowing how to comment properly, having internet access outside of school so families can view the work that is posted. #4thchat
A3: Making sure the what is being recorded and placed into their journals doesn't have too much chatter in the background. Got some pretty cool retrophonehandles to help with that now :) #4thchat
Students find it easier to "do retakes" which is a big bonus of digital work. No more erasing, ripping papers & rewriting - a little insertion or copy/paste and their work is done in less time. #4thchat
#4thchat A2 Ss are more engaged by posting work to a digital portfolio and will often do retakes of work that they otherwise would just turn in "as is."
A4: its not about everything that the student or the class does. S's can use it just to post pics of their work with no real purpose behind it. #4thchat
Dave from Middletown. Bumming because my first open house in a very long time without a projection screen . Sharpboard needs to be replaced ugh. Hi #4thchat, been too long since I've caught a live chat here.
#4thchat A4 I like the first paragraph here: Cultivating Communication in the Classroom: Future-Ready Skills for ... - Lisa Johnson - Google Books https://t.co/v35clAilQs
Immediate feedback is HUGE! Often times feedback can be given in real time. It used to take me forever to give written assignments back when they were hand written. #4thchat
A4: A digital portfolio should reflect what a student if learning and should show growth over time. A scrapbook is a nice place to store memories. #4thchat
A4 Digital portfolios are more than a scrapbook. Yes there are work samples but students are reflecting on the learning process not just the final product. #4thchat
A5: At the moment only I have posted for this year, but that is about to change now that we have our classroom procedures well in place. Hoping to get Ss to post at least once a week. #4thchat
#4thchat Start slow. Do one post a week from each S in one content area. Test out how the Ss turn it in and how your feedback goes. Ramp up from there. Better to do a pilot in the classroom and do that well. Sometimes you have to fix issues as they come up.
Our coach, @BLongmeier, said, "We got most things on amazon and a few things from oriental trading. We made some of the game boards and giant ten frames on our poster maker." She's amazing! #4thchat
A5: We post 1-3 times a week. Parent connection to see what we are learning using @Seesaw is a #gamechanger Love having them respond to student work and share their thoughts! #4thchat
#4thchat Teachers I think are by natures planners. But we are also innovators and embrace change daily. The balance is what take energy and time. Don't wait for a perfect plan yet--do plan.

A6: @Seesaw it the best app for creating a digital portfolio and is so easy for kids of all ages to use. Parents love receiving notification of new work posted by their child via text messaging. #4thchat
A5 Yes! I use @Seesaw to collect the work samples, progress over time and students then share to their Google Drive to upload to their Google Sites. #4thchat
A6: @Seesaw is definitely my 'go to' place for students to collect work. Pictures, folders, videos and written or voice comments! We are having student led conferences next week, where sts will show and discuss their work! #4thchat
I think the uploading of work can be confusing. Sometimes it's confusing for us as adults! If using Google Suite it's so much easier/almost seamless. #4thchat
A7: I always have sts choose what goes in. I encourage some 'show off' work and some 'next time I will' work for talking points. They set goals and discuss with parents too. #4thchat
A6: We love to #appsmash Had a student use @PicCollage to create this #gmttc24 He added it to @Seesaw now it's my turn to share it on Twitter to see who will connect to share the learning with us. #4thchat#4thchat
A3: I think assessing student work can be a challenge. I think @plnaugle mentioned setting criteria for digital work - this is a must! Doesn't have to be complicated but it will aid in providing relevant feedback. #4thchat
#4thchat A7: T responsible to not accept poor tech quality (fuzzy photos, incomplete work). Ss responsible for posting what they learned. Feedback should be learning focused not tech skill focused.
Great article Mark! Thanks for sharing.I think this become a WIP as @mrsreedsclass14 mentioned. Planning/thinking ahead to the types of items being placed in the portfolio is key! #4thchat Don't want to take away from seeing the growth by bombard/junking up the portfolio #4thchat
Hmmm...I'm not sure if they record it or not, however, I will share the google slide show we create to go with it for anyone that want some of the resources :) #4thchat
I tried sharing a grid to do a #gmttc24 solution share, but it went wonky somewhere along the way. Not ready to give up yet...but sure do need to sit down and work out the kinks :) #4thchat
#4thchat I also have liked how @Seesaw connects their S app with getting Ss interested in coding: Seesaw Coders: Computer Science Education Week Resources https://t.co/xhnSbaPqek
A4: I think a scrapbook is a record of what has been as well as wishes and dreams - not really a planned piece. A portfolio is more than that - it's showing growth over time. #4thchat
Teachers...what are you doing Wednesday night at 7pm CST?
I'll be sharing ways to combine the Superheroes your kids love with #STEM...
Even if you're not a 2nd grade teacher, join the #2ndchat...
Be a hero!
My brother rewired it so it could work with iPad (it worked a bit and then stopped - needs some tweaking!). Great conversation piece nonetheless. #4thchat
#4thchat A8 Time management: did S turn it in?. Did they follow parameters? Did they learn the learning goal? If they didn't what do they need? This part is key. Getting something wrong is different from getting feedback and support.
A8: I have not assessed my students' portfolios. I think they are assessed enough. If they like their work and want to upload it, I say "go for it". #4thchat
I don’t use them. I would like to one day though. I just received 10chromebooks for my classroom. So today I introduced Ss to googleclassroom. #4thchat
A7: I feel that it can be a combination of teacher/student. I think we have our favorite work pieces that show off a multitude of skills-just right for a portfolio if it's a "best work" . #4thchat
#4thchat Even Ts can learn online and share learning at a MOOC like this one:
The PLACE: Professional Learning and Collaboration Environment https://t.co/RsqJpta0ns
#4thchat There are many MOOCs, but I have found this one to be very organized and easy to use. Google "educator mooc" and there are so many now. And many are free.
