Hey everyone! David here! I am the Head of Community Engagement here @goformative ! I am excited to be here tonight and help out with the chat! Join us @vendi55#FormativeChat
A4) This fall I helped launch a student-led leadership podcast: #AwardWinningCulture
Students can interview and discuss concepts like Character, Culture, Community, Leadership, etc. it’s been the coolest project I’ve ever been apart of! #rethink_learning#FormativeChat
A1: how about we let Ss research & locate the vocabulary they think is both key AND confusing to them personally? I bet the list isn't that much different from the Ts #FormativeChat
A1: The core of student voice is choice. When a T allows Ss to explore and take ownership of their own learning, they help them make learning relevant and important to each student. #formativechat
Hello #formativechat My name is Luis. I'm a HS ELL teacher, tech coach, and Director from RI. I would love to see @gsteppen join in. He is an avid @goformative user.
#FormativeChat hi Aprajita Ralli... jumping from #rethink_learning to here....it's early morning in India and I am excited about these sessions...a burst of learning to Kickstart my day
A1: Allow students to choose vocabulary words from the text that they do not know and or find interesting. They can then choose how to show the teacher that they have learned the words. #formativechat
A1: Vocab in HS math can be taught as a secondary language. To empower student voice Ts can encourage Ss to put concepts in their own words and then challenge other Ss to also explain it differently. Often times I ask, “who/how else can we describe that?” #formativechat
A1) As part of our curriculum, the Ss have 20 new words a week to learn. I give them a choice of setting, characters, and conflict and have them create a short story using the words.
#formativechat
A1: @ilovemembean because it gave Ss vocabulary that was relevant to them and their skill level. It gave Ss voice because the program could be done anytime/anywhere. One S said she was told to get off her phone @ dinner, but she exclaimed, “I’m learning!” #formativechat
A1: trying to stay away from teacher led notes. Gave ss each a word and had them put themselves in categories. Next giving ss words and pictures. Having them write a definition based on the picture. Last ss choose which words or which activity to show learning. #formativechat
Q1 - Using @goformative helps promote #studentvoice as it is easy to have all and each students respond to key vocabulary and can do in a variety of ways such as upload and annotating doc, audio responses, and more. #formativechat
A1: I also think of the ELL Ss here as well @loliveira55. I love @Flipgrid for having Ss practice how to pronounce and use words in context. #formativechat
A1 I typically had students complete Science Encyclopedia Pages, but this year I have revamped it and am having them create sketchnotes for the terms instead and will do fewer terms. #formativechat
A1: Tricky! Options would be my best solution for this. Finding their strengths and prerequisite skills to demonstrate current understanding of concepts being taught. Then again, I'm like @mr_middle_2...I am here to learn. #formativechat
A1: Allow students to select words they need/want to learn from list teacher provides and then give variety of strategies for learning the vocab for Ss to choose from... and evaluate the process together at the end to improve the process the next time around. #formativechat
A1 Our vocabulary lists are mostly created by my ELL students. I have them bring in words or phrases that they encounter during their daily activities. We compile the materials the students bring in and learn new vocabulary. #formativechat
A1: Encourage students to create QR codes about specific vocabulary words. They can create a doc, poem, a definition, or even a video to go with the QR code so when other students click on it, they learn from them. #formativechat
A1~ have Ss generate lists together of vocab in pairs, trips, small groups ~ let their interests connect with vocab & have them do the work of finding/making meaning of words & have them share out to earn exit ticket-invested, interested & empowering Ss~trifecta 😊
#formativechat
#FormativeChat A1. One if the criteria of assessment is use if terminology ...so in every class a column on the board has IMPORTANT WORDS....that helps them imbibe the vocabulary and the correct use
A1: Encourage students to create QR codes about specific vocabulary words. They can create a doc, poem, a definition, or even a video to go with the QR code so when other students click on it, they learn from them. #formativechat
As a future math teacher I really like this idea. Having students put concepts in their own words also ensures that students understand what the concepts mean #formativechat
A1: I stole this from someone from here last year but this was the most interesting student lead review we did last year in freshman science. https://t.co/QO2QtQ0lF3#formativechat
Thanks! 11th & 12th. They get a list of setting, characters, and conflicts and they can come up a million different story lines...like I'm on a pirate ship with my chemistry teacher and I lost my cell phone...silly stuff like that.
#formativechat
A1 Focus less on the "by the book" definitions and incorporate more of the ideas from Text2Self. Text2Text amd Text2World. Finding definitions that students can relate to. #formativechat
A1: Let kids create stories, songs, raps, commercials using key vocabulary-it will be relevant because it’s their creations, and easy to remember for the same reason :) #formativechat
This is an interesting question. If you teach something like, say, statistics....Ss don't get to decide what vocabulary the Statistics community uses. They are novices in a world of expert practitioners. Perhaps they have choice in how they are assessed. #formativechat
A1: I love flipgrid. The idea of having students share ideas about different vocabulary words in innovative ways. Why not a short video from each student? #formativechat
A2: we know what concepts & content will be on the test; what if Ss had a say in the format/design of the test? what if they designed the assessment?! #FormativeChat
Letting students use key vocabulary to build their own lessons/activities is a great idea! Great way to allow Ss to place those words in context. #FormativeChat
I've tried working as a full class to develop a vocabulary list on a given topic before. It was really fun. The kids knew ahead of time that I would supplement their suggestions with words I knew they needed to know, but they appreciated seeing their own ideas.
#FormativeChat
#formativechat A1: I use it as criteria in end of unit projects. They create a website/video/song/kahoot/quizlet/animation answering the big ideas of the unit using appropriate vocabulary correctly.....some really unique projects have been created!
A2: Ss should be talking loud and clear in all the test preparation through formative assessments to let the teacher know how to form the test to best suit their needs. #formativechat
A1: Let kids create stories, songs, raps, commercials using key vocabulary-it will be relevant because it’s their creations, and easy to remember for the same reason :) #formativechat
A2 Invite students into the test creation process from the start. Incorporate student definitions and ideas from their thinking into the test preparation. #formativechat
A2 Offer students options for how to prepare, create some stations in class or use tools like choice boards, for Ss to design their review, work with peers #FormativeChat
A2b: students should know the answers to DOK 1 questions before the exam comes anyway so there shouldn't be a "they're cheating" mindset if they design the test before they take it #FormativeChat
A2: Also, Ss can help with developing and framing the review questions (which may be on the summative assessment) so that they have ownership over their learning as well. #shiftthis#formativechat
A2: Ss rotated through sections. Cooperative practice on Chromebooks, indy work middle aisle, T & S round table (open to any ?s), and group practice assessment problems in far corner. All sections Ss decided what topics they wanted to prep on. #formativechat
#formativechat A1: look at previous success/failures every class is different, but really analyze the review (if any) you as a T do. Request feedback before test and then check Ss feedback to test results - active, engaged, S led reviews have worked for HS
A2: we know what concepts & content will be on the test; what if Ss had a say in the format/design of the test? what if they designed the assessment?! #FormativeChat
And I think it's a vital tool, letting students personalize vocab. I mean, the textbook I was gifted as a new teacher still had a floppy disk and cassette tape in it. Even 12 years ago the kids were like... What is this?? 😆
#formativechat
Q4. What are students doing to amplify their voices for learning? to advocate for what they believe? #rethink_learning- if we start to run over time - jump over to #formativechat to continue discussing amplifying voice
Yes! Also, no secrets in the classroom. Let them know the essay question at the BEGINNING of the unit. They can then prepare throughout the unit and know what to expect at the end. #formativechat
A2 I used to do whole class review, but now I instead provide options. Usually i do a class interactive option (quizlet live, Kahoot or quizizz) but also give some individual options like stations or independent practice #formativechat
A2) Give students a completed study guide & then have them create a screencast explaining the terms or concepts. Quickly they figure out what they don't know & ask for hep. When it's done, they end up with a multi-sensory learing tool to help prepare for the test.
#formativechat
A2 - Understand that Ss learn in different ways. Make some flexible ways in which Ss can show understanding of concept. Let Ss design some Qs. Provide opportunities for #formativeassessment of Student Voice #formativechat
A2 Two years ago, students could choose their assessment type. 3 units in a semester, 2 assessments per unit, but students chose the combination from timed essay, traditional test, presentation. Now, I’ve moved to collecting multiple samples for consistent mastery #formativechat
A2~ role playing, skits, incorporating vocab in creating/sharing jokes for reviewing words... charades, using scrabble tiles with part of word & having peers fill in blanks as they review vocab ~ bit loud, but big fan fav ❤️
#formativechat
A1 - as with most other things it’s about empowering your class. Ms y students are used to the typical teacher led instruction. Rarely does that lead to students who really feel connected. #formativechat
A2 So I truly believe that the good instruction you provide for your students is all the test prep they need, so student centered teaching is all you need . #formativechat
#formativechat#StuVoice That's the easiest thing for my subject,we role play . We assess skills through formatives. So, in their fun learning ways they show a lot of responsibility and ownership.
A2: if you are going to give a test, make it short and let Ss come up with the Qs and make sure the Qs are open ended so Ss can give opinions - no one right answer! The heart of #inquiry! #FormativeChat
A2 Give them a different option for sharing their learning. Tests are weak and oppressively narrow. Have them make something beautiful that synthesizes ideas and skills into something that contributes to the dialogue and serves the world. #formativechat
A2: #whatif students co-created the tests and co-designed the assessments? Then the students provided critical feedback on the design and what worked, what didn't work and what they learned. #formativechat#rethink_learning
That’s a great place to start. Also, make sure your conversation also entails what formative assessment looks like and how practice and failure is part of the learning process. #formativechat
A2 - I love allowing students to develop their own questions. Give them certain criteria and it’s amazing how much more they will learn and master the material. #formativechat
A2: I'm still a freshman in college, but my favorite high school teacher used to have us review through fun games that we either chose or created ourselves #formativechat
A2 More and more I am having my students create the study questions themselves. This can be in @GetKahoot or @quizlet live. It becomes a game and learning occurs during the process. #formativechat
A2: Be open to alt. forms of review. Not everything has to be a list of terms to memorize. I hated this as a student. If we downplay the magnitude of the situation, Ss might be more likely to make better mental connections. Turn the process into something fun. #formativechat
I can't stay away from that section at the bookstore. Just. Can'https://t.co/8uQVSEMyJQ.
Totally unnecessary expenditures, but they make me happy. :) #formativechat
A2 I am firm in my belief about test prep as seen in this piece . Although it is focused on science it is true for all disciplines #formativechat. https://t.co/g7rgAxu1jX
A2: I have a problem with teaching to the test. We need to encourage curiosity, creativity, and innovation so they have agency. #Whatif we involve students in redesigning assessment and what is measured? #formativechat
A2: Have students create the test reviews together from thier notes, assignments and formative assessments, with teacher as facilitator! 😊 #formativechat
I love this! It's important for Ss to believe that their words/expressions are lasting and have an impact. Great way to use the physical environment for this purpose. #formativechat
A3: reading "how to personalize learning" by @bbray27 now; this Q aligns w the idea of "how do I best express my learning" covered by the authors...let them use their strengths & resources to get creative, I bet they WOW you with their engagement & production #FormativeChat
A3: Ss can gain voice to show mastery by continually reflecting on their work through reflections and portfolios. If they know strengths/weaknesses, Ss will be more apt to work towards mastery. #formativechat
As with any type of assessment or learning, the ultimate ideas to consider are:
1. Why is this important?
2. How will it help students?
3. Is it memory or true learning that we want?
4. Do students feel connected to the material or is it study and forget it? #formativechat
A3: Ss can gain voice to show mastery by also knowing that formative assessment is their practice ground with no threat, lots of failure, and long-term gains. #formativechat
A3: learning should not be prescribed and should not be about teaching to the test; what do they want to learn? How do they want to learn? #FormativeChat#stuvoice
As with any type of assessment or learning, the ultimate ideas to consider are:
1. Why is this important?
2. How will it help students?
3. Is it memory or true learning that we want?
4. Do students feel connected to the material or is it study and forget it? #formativechat
A3 ss voice should be woven throughout your teaching. Ss should feel connected to what they are learning in order to be engaged and powered. Choice= voice and ss should have many choices in how they are showing mastery. #FormativeChat
Definitely! I loved being able to make a game that fit the way that I best study, and since my fellow classmates would all come up with their own games I got to try different ways of studying until I found what works best for me #formativechat
#formativechat A3: through the great ideas and tools talked about tonight! There have been many ways formatively and summatively that Ss have been able to voice agency in their learning. Being at a HS, it has been great to see how Ss change in 4yrs
Use student strengths to let them choose how they show mastery. Some people like to create presentations, some like to perform, some like straight paper pencil. Let students choose! #formativechat
A4: I feel like I repeat this a lot, but ask the students if they have a fresh idea for how they want to show mastery. Is there an app they want to use that we have never used before? How could they use it to show what I am looking for? #formativechat
A3: Encourage students to collect evidence of learning as they learn, monitor and track progress and choose multiple types of evidence along with reflections in their portfolio. #formativechat
A3: I never gave my opinion even when Ss asked - it's about what they think and why - even in #inquiry Ss think the Ts opinion is the right one - we need to move away from this, so don't offer your thoughts. Let them hammer it out as a group/class. #FormativeChat#stuvoice
A3 #formativechat mastery shows it form in various ways for students! I think it’s all about student choice for them to show us their mastery! They are the ones in charge! We need to provide the options and be open to what ideas they have! They come up with amazing ideas!!
A3 I am really going to be focused on this exact thing this year. I have told my ss that my focus is on learning, not ‘grades’. So our job isn’t done until we know it AND could teach it to someone else. Hoping using blended learning will help me with this #formativechat
A3 Encorporate student voice when deciding what final product will be chosen to show mastery, then iron out the details with students on what your expectations are for it. #formativechat
A3 Having students explain their thinking is a great way to have them show mastery. This can be explaining how they came up with the solution to a math problem, or explaining the procedures they used during a science experiment. Let the students do the talking. #formativechat
A3 Make talking a critical part of assessment. We need to provide multiple opportunities for students to share their voices #formativechat We need to become better listeners. I’m working on it
A3: When Ss realize that their passions + skills count in the demonstration of their understanding they will feel empowered to make deeper connections to what they are learning. Do they draw? Do they code? Do they design websites? Do they build? Use these as tools. #formativechat
Agreed! If students are involved from the beginning of the learning unit, they'll be able to better apply what they learn through out it. #formativechat
A3:1 way 2 show mastery is 2 take another person’s solution & describe it in your own words. I have Ss give solutions 2 word problems and distribute them randomly. New S describes the solution they see in their own words & tries 2 describe what other S was thinking #formativechat
A3-By having students reflect and keep track of their goals and mastery. Having ss track their mastery will help with student voice and ownership/
#formativechat
A3: Provide Opportunities for #Choice as they increase confidence about sharing their #voice. Letting go & empowering students to design, create, & eventually advocate & innovate. #formativechat graphics @sylviaduckworth
It’s approach involving a mix of tech and teaching. Flipped learning is a form of it. There are a lots of great resources out there for it. Caitlin Tucker and #boldschool is great to help learn more #formativechat
Q3 - Use student voice as a focal point of the learning process and that learning is reviewed and mastered through formative assessment. Need to get past that learning is over once 'test' is done and that learning is fixed #formativechat
A3: Provide Opportunities for #Choice as they increase confidence about sharing their #voice. Letting go & empowering students to design, create, & eventually advocate & innovate. #formativechat graphics @sylviaduckworth
A3 Doing a blog exchange so students can write about what matters to them While practicing specific writing skills. They will choose multiple writing samples to prove consistent mastery. #formativechat
My favorite Slides Add-On is @PearDeck by orchards. I love the vocabulary, the critical thinking, and more importantly the way it transforms teaching. @BPSTIS#formativechat
A3: Encourage students to set their own goals and share how they plan to meet them. The teacher can empower them to be self-directed, independent learners with agency. That means they know their voice and own their learning. #formativechat
As we wrap up #formativechat, give it up for @kristi_daws ! She created great questions, did an awesome job hosting, and took us to new heights with #studentvoice !
Thank you for an awesome chat. My head is spinning from all the fast and furious great ideas! I will definitely go back and read. Great PLN and chat as always. Have a wonderful week. #formativechat
A3: In high school I loved when ts allowed us to pick a project from a list of possible options. Ss could create a poster, take a test, make a mini movie, or write an essay. Every student was able to show mastery through a way that best worked for them #formativechat
I believe in and exercise S voice. I also believe that the well trained, professional educators in the classroom are there for a reason. Knowing when & how to best utilize S-voice/choice is the work of the master instructor. The pendulum can easily swing too far. #formativechat
The end goal of teaching and learning is fostering a passion for the content. This seems out of reach, but with quality and positive instruction it is possible. Love of content, job and students. #formativechat
Be sure to join us next week when @msyoung114 guest moderates our weekly #FormativeChat let's talk about being Culturally Responsive and assessments #4OCFPLN
As we wrap up #formativechat, give it up for @kristi_daws ! She created great questions, did an awesome job hosting, and took us to new heights with #studentvoice !
Even my hardest, most serious (and favorite) college professor played "Jeopardy" to review human evolution with us adults! Play some games with your students. Don't fear the noise; embrace it as natural!
#formativechat
Yes, this ---> Let them know the essay question at the BEGINNING of the unit. They can then prepare throughout the unit and know what to expect at the end. #formativechat Thanks @LScumpieru
