#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
Great topic tonight. Someone had mentioned about the march on Sat and should Ts go? I stated that no Ts is representing school and that they should be able to go without fear of retaliation and me and this other Ts were like, if they do suffer if, call ACLU #UrbanEdChat
A1. Teaching is a fluid situation and there are literally millions of lesson plans out there. I teach without fear when I have Goals and know my instruction is Relevant! #UrbanEdChat
A1 teaching without fear means thinking outside the box. Going beyond wha the district provides you as a scope and sequence. I seen Ts remove furniture out their room and dress up for just one lesson, but the ss are engaged and learn the content #urbanedchat
A1: @ShakeUpLearning (in her new book) puts it perfectly: You must get comfortable with being uncomfortable.." You can't be afraid to be the "crazy Ts who does weird stuff" #UrbanEdChat
#UrbanEdChat Tweeting on behalf of my Leadership and Literacy Graduate program! Teaching and fear comes up frequently for the teachers in this Masters program. #TED9190
Especially regardless of what your co-workers may think or say. There is no fear that you may fall on your face..you just go for it and let the chip fall where they may :) #UrbanEdChat
A1. Able to take a calculated risk for the benefit of Ss without fearing retribution from supervisors. Example: deviating from the scope & sequence to make sure all students understood the unit. #UrbanEdChat
A1:. What comes to mind for me is the ability to not be stuck to one way of planning, delivering and assessing a lesson. Being flexible at a moment's notice for the advancement of academic achievment shows no fear. #UrbanEdChat
A2: Vulnerability builds trust (not vice versa) so Ts need space to be vulnerable or edu will never change/adapt to today’s students’ needs #UrbanEdChat
If you fall, you dust yourself off and try again. A supportive culture supports and encourages failure because failure means you’re trying new ideas #UrbanEdChat
#UrbanEdChat A1 Hey Josh! Reminds me so much of both our Multicultural Literacy and Young Adult Literacy Classes. I am #OPSproud when it comes to the types of texts we allow in student hands. #Nobannedbooks
A2 you want to be able to have Ts to grow in their craft and be life long learners. You cant do that if you put them in a box and give outlandish limitations. Some of the best Ts out their are the ones that teach w/o fear #urbanedchat
#UrbanEdChat We've discussed often the role of program policing and if it is inhibiting our ability to be reflective, reactive, and meta-cognitive teachers. We've asked: can I follow both a program and have my professional approaches respected?
#UrbanEdChat A2 Fear rattles any person's confidence but when a teacher is fearless in approach to teaching I feel as though buy-in from students will grow

A2. Fear stifles creativity & causes teachers to feel more comfortable teaching from a highly scripted curriculum. It negatively affects student’s educational experiences. #UrbanEdchat
#UrbanEdChat A3: Social Justice and Critical Literacy can be powerful tools used together. With many of the Walk Out movements, passion within students can be tied back to curriculum utilizing critical literacy practices. Should definitely be taught!
A3: If we don’t do it, who will? Is important to not force our viewpoints, but we need to show students how to advocate for social justice and be change agents #UrbanEdChat
A3: The ability to discern whether institutional and societal constructs are fair. Mathematics lends itself as as great vehicle for discussing and learning for social justice. That said, I welcome it. #UrbanEdChat
A2: Because if Ts feel fear, Ss don't get all of the info they need in order to make informed decisions. Ss lose out and Ts feels restrained #UrbanEdChat
A3: To truly attack and end generational poverty we must actually have conversations about topics that matter. The reality for our students is sometimes lost on teachers who have never experienced it. This is an entry for students to see all of their #possibleselves. #UrbanEdChat
A3: Big Time! Social Justice is a crucial and definitely has a place in the classroom.Look at what a mess we are today. Equity and Equality and things best taught while they are young so that they can be practiced for a lifetime #UrbanEdChat
A2: I think when Ts are fearful to address the hard topics, ss are missing out on seeing the world through a multitude of perspectives. When hard topics come up, we try to make it safe place to ask questions and look for answers together. #UrbanEdChat
When I did Student Ts, I was placed in a Catholic School. First thing I said was, "I'm not going to be censored am I, because if that's the case, I would rather be somewhere else (and I went to Catholic School)." They assured me I wouldn't. #UrbanEdChat
A4. When I started teaching in 2000 teachers in Title 1 schools were only allowed to teach by reading from a script! The idea was remove the teacher and Ss would learn. Next up:Restrictive standards and massive curriculums. #UrbanEdChat
A4: Remember that most curriculum is developed by non-educators, so adapt as needed! Social justice can be embedded in a lot of curriculum. Be intentional. Seek out connections. #UrbanEdChat
A4: They can show the bystander Ts how important it is to take chances and how their Ss can benefit from their fearlessness. Also, Ss appreciate when their Ts go out on a limb for them by changing things up. It show Ts actually care. #UrbanEdChat
That is still happening. When I was a first year teacher in 2010 we were still told to do this. I teach Deaf students. . . guess how helpful phonics instruction was? Couldn't deviate.
A4: Creating a safe space for teachers to discuss societal issues is the first step. Mutual respect and the ability to not only be aware but acknowledge the unfair practices is next. At the end, it is for the betterment of all our students. #UrbanEdChat
How can we start breaking down the walls so students can aspire to jobs they don’t know exist? We must be intentional when we discuss vocational aspirations or students will imprint the jobs they can’t do. We can’t let them foreclose on their options. #UrbanEdChat
I was in a Program Improvement school...follow the pacing guide. But I still deviated. And my students outperformed the others. Relevance and relationships matter #UrbanEdChat
A4: I'm lucky to be part of a school with a Community Vision approach to learning. We use literature, field trip shared experiences, and project based learning to explore topics that directly affect the Omaha community. #UrbanEdChat
A4: I think Ts only believe that because curriculumn has been given to them from someone else. We forget its a guide and a pace. WE need channel back to when we were learning how to teach and we were researching our own lesson. Is this a dying art now? #urbanedchat
A2. It is concern about the rights of others & wellbeing of others. It should be included so that our students not just think about themselves but others as well. It is a way to try & improve the world. #UrbanEdChat
Have you seen this research on career choice and how young students view options? https://t.co/bcQq1hDA8l It helps with the wall breakdown need #UrbanEdChat
A5: Lead and be real. Teaching Ss to recognize and discuss social justice issues because they are there. This is so hard for HS Ts because we love our content. Kids don’t care about Molar Mass when their minds are focused on issues beyond school. #UrbanEdChat
I love the way you phrased this! If our ss are the future leaders of our world, we need to create a space for them to examine inequities and seek out ways to improve upon our world. #UrbanEdChat
A5 Sorry, I’m late. Ts should provide a foundation for all Ss to learn about Social Justice in order to promote equitable treatment for all they encounter irregardless of someone’s gender, race, ethnicity or place of origin #UrbanEdChat
How can we start breaking down the walls so students can aspire to jobs they don’t know exist? We must be intentional when we discuss vocational aspirations or students will imprint the jobs they can’t do. We can’t let them foreclose on their options. #UrbanEdChat
A6: Do what you feel is right. Don't worry about what others say cause it's not for them..it's for Ss and that's what we are here for, that simple #UrbanEdChat
A5. They should be a facilitator of all or as many sides of a social issue as possible. Not biased. Ss should have as much exposure to these issues as possible. Ss then choose what action to take. #UrbanEdChat
A6: Seek out and know your supports first! When you are able to know your administration and district policies support your use of social justice, the main obstacle left is to prepare yourself with research when facing backlash. #UrbanEdChat
I had to learn, to let go. Textbook didn’t cut it - bringing in the Zoot Suit Riots and Tupac poetry built bridges. Music was what bonded us. That doesn’t show up in curriculum guides #UrbanEdChat
When I did my pre-clinical with @Casey_A22 at @miltonhershey first thing she said was, "remember, it's about the Ss, not you!" I never forgot that and never will! #UrbanEdChat

@FerialP taught us to learn our rights as teachers, be prepared with the research, and remember to always be coming from a place of "mutual respect for one another benefits everyone." #UrbanEdChat
A6 you're going to get people who question you. The only people you need to answer to are the parents and ss. If you are making connections and they are growing and learning, thats what matters. They only question becayse they don't want to take the risk. #urbanedchat
A7: I went to Beyond Diversity training by @courageousdove Learned the need for social justice was more important than my fear. I connected w/other passionate Ts for support #UrbanEdChat
A6. I suggest we follow the example of the Ss from Parkland Students. Teachers staged walkouts around the USA demanding education become relevant! #UrbanEdChat
A5 Even though it sounds simple, teachers simply need to bring awareness to the inequalities in life, we're not going to fix the world alone but we can introduce problems to many who may have never thought to think about them #UrbanEdChat
A6: Do you believe it is right? Do you believe it will create better critical thinking? Will it give student voice a place in your class? Are you fearful@of fellow Ts? Are you fearful of your admin? Answer these first for yourself then DO IT! #UrbanEdChat
"Remove the teacher and the ss would learn." This phrase is really resonating for my Masters program classmates & myself. We sometimes feel as though our professional judgement is revoked in order to follow prescribed approaches. #UrbanEdChat

Yes indeed! I had a great mentor in @Casey_A22 . Now there's Ts who knows how shake things up! Talk about teaching without fear! Wish you could meet her! #UrbanEdChat

A6. I would tell them to run it by their supervisor. Make sure it is related to the curriculum. Talk to your PLC members & other peers for feedback. They may have already taught it. Pick a relevant topic. #UrbanEdChat
Mr. Mooring. I wish it was that simple! Rad Abraham Lincolns Annual Message to Congress --
Concluding Remarks December 1, 1862. https://t.co/zeXdLvLGJZ#UrbanEdChat
Lemarr, remember when we WERE the Ss from Parkland? That's what we have to remember! We stood in their shoes for one reason or another. We have to go back there for them. #UrbanEdChat
Agreed, Josh! Any student of any age can learn to appreciate the differences in another. Introduce the topics to young learners now rather then tank pass on addressing our learned biases. #UrbanEdChat
A8: Could start with issues like access for people w/disabilities, access to clean water, even digital divide if looking for non-politically charged topics #UrbanEdChat
A8) Look at your trade book library- are they diverse? Teach them advocacy skills, the topic of social justice- how to be open and explore information #UrbanEdChat
Lemarr, remember when we WERE the Ss from Parkland? That's what we have to remember! We stood in their shoes for one reason or another. We have to go back there for them. #UrbanEdChat
A8: For my kindergartners, we explore topics like ways in which people, families, and homes differ. We've expanded this to include learning about our refugee, immigrant, migrant peers and also the topic of homelessness. #UrbanEdChat
You said it! There's a HUGE issue with Ss with disabilities. If I hear one more Ts say, 'well that Ss is getting an unfair advantage because I have to (insert accommodation) I'm gonna scream! #UrbanEdChat
As a part of a larger study on the history of US immigration, second grade students @CDM_Dragons demonstrated their Design solutions for how they would welcome newcomers to the school during a community exhibition. @CDMdreamers#Empathy#DMUSD
A2 - Fear hinders genuine conversations, curiousity, and connections between Ts & Ss. Fear keeps Ts from being open & available to Ss - esp Ss who need a safe place to voice their Qs #UrbanEdChat
Amazed by S presentations of their final designs to help people without homes charge a cell phone. Many began with presenting the need, what they designed, shared feedback received and how they adjusted designs, & why product would help. #msbullis4th#sycridge#DMUSD#dtk12chat
The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.Abraham Lincoln - 1862. #UrbanEdChat
