ShiftinEdu is a summit for forward thinkers on November 9 and 10, 2017 in Miami. We gather thought leaders and educators from all over the world and empower them to be influencers in their own communities. The focus of the summit is to drive innovation in education through leveraging new methodologies and technologies in learning.
We are honored to welcome @karistubbs tonight as our moderator for #DigCit chat with #ShiftinEdu Looking forward to an inspired discussion with you all. Please use #digcit and #ShiftinEdu in all your answers!
To set the conversation -2017 @speakupEd data #DigCithttps://t.co/Wn6VwT5f5T#shiftinedu Results show 1) everyone is focused on safety (not ethical/technical skills); 2) disconnect b/w what parents & admins think should be taught, what teachers are teaching & kids are learning.
“I know how to be safe online.” 56% of high school students and 60% of middle school students said this is true. Cause for concern? @speakupEd#shiftinedu#digcit
A1: cyberbullying, understand copyright, promoting and modeling the best strategies to access safe, healthy and legal uses of digital information #shifinedu#digcit#shiftinedu
We asked parents “When is the right age for children to start learning Internet safety and good digital citizenship behaviors?” More than half said lower elementary grades (1-3). @speakupEd#shiftinedu#digcit
As a parent and teacher, i agree that children are exposed and much earlier years outside of the classroom and need guidance as they navigate. #shiftinedu
And - @ISTE ‘s #digcit standard for educators -”Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.” Feedback? #shiftinedu
To quote @ISTE ’s #digcit standard for students - “Students recognize the rights, responsibilities, opportunities of living, learning & working in an interconnected digital world, & they act/model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.” Feedback on this definition? #shiftinedu
A1: Opportunities to learn from people using #techforgood; moving away from a fear-based #digcit model; and understanding how to sift through loads of information and understanding bias #ShiftinEdu
A2 I refer to the @iste standards and in my class we used @digcitizen book to learn about the 9 elements, Ss created infographics for each and we display them in the hall #shiftinedu
A1: My biggest wish is that teachers would stop scaring kids about being online. In the two years of me doing #LivBits, I've only had 3 mean things happen. I Iearned from those hard experiences. Don't prevent me from learning by limiting my access. DIGITAL is my world #ShiftinEdu
Agreed with @thelivbits about the importance of steering away from the fear-based model. It's also a community effort- it's not just the teachers limiting experiences, but all of us coming together a community to support positive online learning. #shiftinedu
I’m a big fan of Mike Ribble @digcitizen ,a fellow Kansan! He’s done great work with @ISTE, as well as what we’ve been up to at @BrainPOP. Here’s a link to his book Digital Citizenship in Schools: 9 elements all students should know https://t.co/gwk2SOHzVW#shiftinedu#digcit
Be sure to follow @OPSMrsKorf from @OmahaPubSchool - she’s an absolute rock star and visionary with regard to #DigCit#shiftinedu Follow their community focused work with their mobile learning unit, too!
Liv, you are so right we can always learn from all things that happen; the good and the bad. If we never allow students to experience the bad they will miss out on important life lessons. #shiftinedu

Q4: What are your “go to” resources on Digital Citizenship for you as an educator? And what resources do you turn to for your students? #shiftinedu#digcit
A4: Not so much a resource but an attitude -- immersion. Important to expose Ss to the multitude of perspectives in the digital world and provide them scaffolds for shifting through them and finding their truth. #shiftinedu

A3: My #digcit journey has been so incredible and at different parts of my journey different people have helped. I think that's important for kids to know. You need a #digitaltribe and your tribe will ebb and flow depending on your needs. #ShiftinEdu
