Join in the #HISDAdminChat conversation each Sunday night at 6pm CST as we discuss the challenges we face and the successes we celebrate while learning and leading as an HISD Administrator.
Greetings #HISDAdminChat friends. Dan, principal at ConditES. Not sure I can narrow my cinematic inspiration to just one movie, but Seabiscuit was a good one.

A1: folks who I have been lucky enough to work with and learn from have left lessons with me that endure; I find myself passing them along as well. #HISDAdminChat
I have been lucky to have multiple mentors in my life. They have been a sounding board, sense of encouragement, and accountability in my life. They have refined my leadership and made me more confident! #HISDAdminChat
A1: my mentor, Ruby Andrews (for both my AP years and now Principalship) has been a driving force of positivity and straight honesty. I value her opinion, because she makes suggestions with an explanation behind it. #HISDAdminChat#lovemymentor

I will break code and answer my own question... I’ve had several mentors through different stages in my life! Each one has influenced me and helped me through tough decisions! I’ve been incredibly lucky ♥️ #HISDAdminChat
A1: Mentors.. formal and informal definitely play a crucial role in my growth as a leader.. I believe it’s important to also pay that forward.. #HISDAdminChat

A1-My father always told me to make sure that I knew every students’ name. I recall a time he was in my campus and a student came up to me. He made sure we stopped our conversation so I could talk to the student. #HISDAdminChat
My mentors have played a major role in my development. They’ve given me a platform to make mistakes, ask questions, and have provided a source of wisdom/support. #HISDAdminChat

A1: (Sorry I’m late, y’all!) My mentor taught me how to have a plan A, plan B, AND plan C—and how to trust myself and react calmly even if those don’t work out. #HISDAdminChat
This is crucial... placing trust in the people we lead takes courage! Welcome Pablo! And thank YOU for mentoring me through the doctoral process as well! #HISDAdminChat

Good evening! It’s Errica #AP at @MCWSTEM chiming in late. Too many favorite movies to name but one of my all time favorites is Lean on Me. #HISDAdminChat

#HISDAdminChat Hi...late to.the party...Kathy here, PCIM for A180.
Been fortunate enough to have a couple of mentors. My first HISD mentor has been a part of every position I've taken in the district.
A2. I don't think any of those are mutually exclusive they overlap. Sometimes you have to ask them what hat you need them to have on for you. #HISDAdminChat
A2: I don’t think these are always different people. Often in my life, they are different roles that are put on by the same person. They know when to push, to listen, to inspire. #HISDAdminChat

A2-Yes, I feel mentors listen more and question to make you think and reflect. If you think about it some of the greatest coaches are not coaches but mentors. #HISDAdminChat
What an honor to have you tonight Kathy! You’ve been an incredible guide through one of the most important components of our leadership: teacher coaching! Welcome and thank you #HISDAdminChat

A2: interesting q! I do believe there is a distinction and you can be/have one without the other ones. But I think if you find someone who happens to be all three, count yourself lucky! #HISDAdminChat
A1. My mentor has helped me to be a more critical thinker. Instead of just telling me to do something there is always a reason for why we are making decisions and the impact. My mentor is also a sounding board and always leaves me feeling confident and inspired. #HISDAdminChat

A1: Mentors have taught me everything. Learn from their mistakes. Trust their wisdom. When doing equitybwork, we must continue what has been started. #HISDAdminChat
A1: I’ve been fortunate to have several amazing mentors. I’ve benefited greatly from having each of them in my life as a sounding board, a mirror, an encourager and as a coach. I’m a wiser leader as a result. #HISDAdminChat
A1: No, I don’t believe there is a difference just may be operating under a different title but the support and push they provide can be the same #HISDAdminChat

A2: I think that great leaders switch from one role to the other seamlessly in order to grow people efficiently. Sometimes you need a coach to cheer you, others a leader to guide you and many times a mentor to teach you during difficult times

I believe that they are all intertwined. Your mentor guides you and gives you suggestions, advice, ideas, guides and helps you believe in yourself. All these things are done or should be done by a coach and a leader. #HISDAdminChat

I like this idea a lot! Sometimes when I’m supporting my teachers, I try to clarify whether I’m speaking as an admin, a coach, a thought partner, or “just a person”—but I think the “hat” thing is maybe a better way to phrase it! :) #HISDAdminChat
A2: I believes a great mentor possesses characteristics of all three. However, I benefit most from those that coach—possibly because that is my style of mentoring as well. #HISDAdminChat
A3: I think it starts with first building those relationships, so that we can know exactly who each person is, what their goals are and exactly what they need from us to help them get there. Or sometimes encouraging them to see what we see in them! #HISDAdminChat

A3: so this is an interesting ask. I think it's on us to provide opportunities for folks to grow as leaders, which may look different for different people. #HISDAdminChat
A3. A leader should inspire and push others to there full potential. When giving others a platform it is important that they know who helped and inspired you along the way and you are paying it forward. #HISDAdminChat
A3: Great leaders don’t just USE people. They prepare them, coach them, have difficult conversations and they are ok when they get a promotion and become peers! #HISDAdminChat
A2: although these 3 roles are usually 3 different people, I think you need to be a leader in order to effectively do any of these roles correctly; A leader doesnt always mean you have to be an administrator either. There’s a leader in everyone #HISDAdminChat

A3: We have to create a culture where our team feels safe enough to go out on a limb & try new things, and—if it works—to share with their peers. We have to create T leadership opportunities even if it seems like maybe more work short term (it’s not long term). #hisdadminchat
The best leaders give honest feedback, push you, and root for your success. They prepare their staple of young leaders for what’s next and celebrate when it’s time for them to move on — hoping they too will do the same for others. #HISDAdminChat

Thanks for hosting @MaggyTovar1! I was so excited to join and talk about mentorship that I am participating from the ✈️ on the way back to HTX! Have a great Monday, team! #HISDAdminChat
A3: I’m clear that every gift that I’ve been given & every blessing I’ve received has been placed in my hand because God can trust me to share it w/others. I keep my eyes open for people to mentor & support. My live is richer because of this & my cup overfloweth. #HISDAdminChat

I love this question! 🤔 (a reflection moment is happening right now) I am sure there’s many other ways, but one way to send the elevator back down is to continuously make yourself available, even to strangers who seek your help. #hisdadminchat

Correct. Sometimes you have to look at it that way. Best thing you could do it stay positive and keep learning what would be the right thing to do. #HISDAdminChat
