A1: growing up playing we had “quick side” and “strong side”, coaching we had “strong tackle” and “weak tackle”, TE would go with the ST. If it works, it works #hogfbchat
A1: Tried to but it became too complicated for us so we abanded it after spring. We are so TE oriented to the left so it didn't make much sense to stick with it... #hogfbchat
A1: ideally, no. But back when I was in high school we had a Quick Guard/Tackle and a Strong Guard/Tackle. It worked for us, but I prefer not to #hogfbchat
A1: this year we are going old school and will have a quick side and a strong side. Can’t wait to try it anybody else? Would like to pick your brain about it! #hogfbchat
A1: No. have don’t it in the past when working with young linemen who had a hard time learning plays. As much as can try to not have tendencies with them, it happens. #hogfbchat
A1) Never have been a part of an offense that does this, nor do I anticipate it. However, I do look forward to seeing some of the responses from those that do! 📝 #hogfbchat
A1) Personally believe the DLs we play against in the #WCAC are too talented to give any hints on potential plays. But again, I’m not the OC, @CoachDShack gets paid the big bucks for these kind of decisions. #Hogfbchat
A1: Have year to year depending on our line and if it helps us. Have used some flipping to get more athletic on some of our GT counter plays or to help us get the edge on certain outside runs #hogfbchat
A1) We have not flipped linemen. However, we're a running offense with a TE and will flip/load to get numbers/talent advantage, depending on situation. #hogfbchat
A1) I have not flipped my OL in the past but have thought about it based on a year to year basis. Would love to hear other thoughts on it though! #hogfbchat
A1: Have been back & forth on this in my career. If you are a 10 personnel team, I don’t think it really matters. I do think if you are going to have a TE a large majority of the time, it is extremely beneficial. #hogfbchat
A1. Offensively currently no. In the past invasion heavy Wing T program we did. We had a strong and a quick side. Defensively were currently flip sides(always s 3 Tech and a 1 tech). Exploring non flipping possibilities. #hogfbchat
A1: I’ve flipped them before, don’t really like too, but have had to. I think you can accomplish the same thing most times by getting in tackle over sets. #hogfbchat
Q1. Absolutely! Cuts learning in half when strong side/quick side. I.e., String side only knows Power from strong side, never goes away from them. Also, can flip to field/boundary and not get stuck on a right/left hash behind your main hog! #hogfbchat
We flipped this year. We’re double wing and run a lot of downs, traps and Buck sweep to the TE. We liked having the bigger, stronger guys on the downs and kick outs. Ran a lot of rocket sweeps away from TE and benefitted from having quick guys on that side #hogfbchat
A1) we don’t. Feel like it can create too much of a tendency and just adds to more thinking upfront bc that’s one more thing they have to learn #hogfbchat
A1- No we don’t. We stay on same side. But I know which side does what better... usually like to pull a side more than other while other is better Down block side. Usually as Year and reps happen it sorts out which I call more. #hogfbchat
Yes, it can give us better looks and match ups because we have some guys that are smaller, some that are bigger. All of our guys know that they are a lineman not a specific position. They are expected to generally know the other positions. #Hogfbchat
A1 No we will move guys around due to injury or based off of game plan to give us an advantage, but we will not move guys around during a game intentionally. #hogfbchat
A1. We do not. All the OL learn Ps/Bs rules for the plays and we work all our blocks both ways, pull right pull left etc. Being wing t and mirroring a lot our plays to either side it has worked out well for us or flopping. #hogfbchat
A1: Used to! We had a tight & split side. Power to the tight side and zone to the split (typically). We’d flip the holes as well. Went away from it when our tackles and guards were almost identical kids. Both T’s could move, both G’s could pull. Didn’t see the need. #hogfbchat
A1: No, but we did when I was at Ayden (wing-t). Quick tackle and Quick guard always went opposite the TE. It cut the play book in half since you never had to teach a “BS responsibility.” Allowed more time to rep fewer blocks and only had to teach a play 1 direction.
#hogfbchat
A1) I’ve been on teams that have flipped. However, my preference is to not flip as I want my guys to do less thinking and just play fast and play physical! #hogfbchat
I do understand the whole strong side, quick side concept, but I have never done it. I would be interested to see plays ran to one group of guys versus another and see if their is any level of predictability with film breakdown. #hogfbchat
A1: we are unbalanced in our wing. We have the ability to be in strong left or right depending on what we are trying to do. Almost all single wing teams have it #HogFbChat
A1: If I were a skill position coach Maybe - but my dudes are BIG. I can't flip em! But seriously folks.... Not unless I HAVE to. Our O and line calls are to complex. Theory is great - but reatlity is, they make fewest mistakes where the get the most reps ⚒️🐗⚒️#hogfbchat
A1: no. Battled with an OC at my previous school about this and sold my head coach on it. Had a D1 kid that would be a 3 year starter at LT, didn’t think flipping him to RT for random run plays was valid. Also don’t like tipping or tendency
#hogfbchat
That's precisely why we do flip. I dont want my tight tackle to be pulling across the formation on tackle trap. But I also get where you're coming from in a different O. #hogfbchat
A1: Not us, but played on a team that did. Fun when you’re good enough to basically tell the D where you’re running and dare them to stop you. #hogfbchat
A1: Not at the college level but coached in a right/left wing-T variation at the HS level several years ago. Advantages = reps reps reps! More time for HS kids playing both ways to focus on specific skills. Better in-game knowledge and adjustments. #hogfbchat
A1) I never have as play caller but have been on a staff who did and it worked for us. I’d probably consider it if we were Wing T, but I don’t think it’s necessary for what we do #hogfbchat
Chances are you’ll have more tendencies behind your best. Flipping gave me less tendencies than left/right. I was surprised but love flipping. #hogfbchat
Have flipped in the past. I see a lot of benefit in doing so.
1. Cuts learning in half.
2. Allows players to become specialists on particular skills.
Can be a challenge developing depth.
#hogfbchat
A1: personally I hate too. I love the familiarity of learning our rules and getting as many reps as possible while young. As they get older we can start playing around with lineups in early August, but rules are a must. Everyone has to know each other’s job.
#hogfbchat
A1 cont: it worked for us in the wing-t and I’d like it in the I as well. Assignments are easier to learn because you’re always doing the same thing regardless of which side the play goes to. Playside for buck sweep is playside. Backside always does the same thing #hogfbchat
A1: Never. Ever. My application of K.I.S.S. has focused on rt/lft not str/qk. "Back when I played OL" (always live saying that), we flipped str/qk. But overall off philosophy was diff & what I've learned has lead me to where I am now as a playcaller/play installer. #hogfbchat
A1) cont…I like some of the responses referring to tackle over/heavy sets. Haven’t done that in a few years for several reasons, mainly we haven’t needed to but that’s definitely something I would opt into before flipping the line. #hogfbchat
Q1 (cont) Also since most of my opposing defenses flip with my strength, my guys can see the DLine tendencies because they see same guy/looks all night #hogfbchat
A1: being primarily a 10 personnel team while it may seem like less thinking I believe it makes for harder footwork to be ambidextrous in pass pro, pulls etc. #hogfbchat
A2: cont. For Scheme - nope, wouldn't do it as we don't like keys. D coordinators are to good these days - I wouldn't want to give that key away. rather be 'balanced' and not give them that indicator. ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
Q1: coached in a system with split side and split side. Tight side only blocked gap schemes, while split blocked base. Seemed like a little too much specializing when lineman are at premium in some programs. #hogfbchat
A1: Hell no. Linemen need to be versatile and understand the entire concept of the play. In order to do that, they must know both sides of the play. No point in “cutting learning time”. Just teach the entire concept and WHY they are doing what they’re doing. #hogfbchat
Continued... yes we had tendencies BUT we had built in answers and plays that worked off one another. It allowed us to adjust immediately and led to big plays. #hogfbchat
A1: coached in a system with split side and split side. Tight side only blocked gap schemes, while split blocked base. Seemed like a little too much specializing when lineman are at premium in some programs. #hogfbchat
A1: Never done it before. It’s an interesting idea. I think I’d rather do what Malzahn does and only run certain plays one way, depending on OL. #hogfbchat
A1: we have not flipped sides but a big program we play does. Always has intrigued me though. I think your kids gotta have great footwork to switch sides especially for pass pro! #hogfbchat
A2. Maulers in the middle. With long and athletic big men at the tackles... Or my most athletic guys. All have to have good feet and be able to move efficiently. #HogFbChat
A2: I like having BEEF up the middle and athletes at tackles. Need to be able to move the DTs with double teams and the guards are HUGE in that #hogfbchat
Flipping OL definitely feels like a Wing-T/single wing/ gap scheme sort of thing. I’m that scenario you don’t have to worry about tendencies because you have so many tendency breakers. I don’t know how well it would work otherwise. #hogfbchat
A2) 1. @OLPerformance Method to Developing Offensive Line Athletes. 2. Teach the WHY behind all that we do to build trust and accountability within culture. 3. Dual train as many players as possible - teach snapping to anyone who is not a swing tackle. #hogfbchat
A2: #hogfbchat see when a Mommy and Daddy love each other very much, and the wine is a flowin...
Lol jk. You build them in the weight room and at the local buffet.
A2- Taking a shot in the dark. My center has to be the smartest/least likely to get rattled. Most athletic have to be the tackles. I find a strong guard and a quick guard. Strong RG Quick LG and then my number 6 has to know all 5, especially how to snap. #hogfbchat
A2: I've never personally looked at how to build the line (Shoutout to @JerodBrown_ for doing that one) but I know that I mainly would want our center to be a bright kid and incredibly strong with his commitment and leadership skills #hogfbchat
A1: speaking as a DC (freshman) flipping lineman can give away plays. I played Army twice in college and both games I was calling their plays as they lined up. But I also had the benefit of a solid background in the offense. #hogfbchat
Q2) C - best snapper
ST-Most physical big man
QG-Most athletic because he pulls most in Gun T
SG-Next most athletic guard type some pulling
QT-Next OLineman Up
(Yes, I flip my line in Shotgun Wing T)
#hogfbchat
A2: Best Pass blocker is Blindside tackle. Best puller is the same side G. Preferably two grinder Run blockers on the other side. The real great offensive lines I've seen are brought together with a Center who is all of the above and smart to make calls #hogfbchat
A2: Start up the middle. I have had to move a very good OT to center due to center not getting the job done. Then I pick guards/tackles depending on offense. We run a lot of zone and I used my quicker/better feet guys at OG. Helps with getting to second level #hogfbchat
A2) Build OL starting from the bottom up in the weight room. Have to have great base to start with, then fit players based on abilities, most athletic play OT, more physical OG and always want a smart Center. #hogfbchat
A2: Inside out. We like our quick guys at tackles so they can help us in the screen game as well as pulling up / getting down field on safeties. Triple option mentality.
#hogfbchat
A2. Small school football. Give me the 5 most physical, intelligent, tough, non-essential skill kids that want to start, dominate, be physical, and win. We dont have to many prototypical lineman types walking our hallways. This year, RT was a soccer convert.#hogfbchat
A2. Teach everything possible in a fashion that is not position specific in the spring/two a days. Lack of depth means position flex is at a premium. Like best OL at C, big and smart is a good situation. Best athlete's at OT. Pluggers at G. #hogfbchat
A2. No real rhyme or reason, more on feel now. Know what we need each position to do and then see what we have and go from there. Have had 150lb G and 280lb G just depends on their skill set and how they fit. #hogfbchat
A2: Had an old OL coach tell me one time, it’s just like baseball, be strong up the middle. Like to put my best 3 drive blockers @ G-C-G. OTs are more agile to help with Pass pro, reaching DEs, & scooping the backside. #hogfbchat
A2: Build it with whatever I’ve got lol. I typically play the more athletic kid at tackle and the road graders at Gs though if I can pick I want LB types at Gs #hogfbchat
A2) Ideally I like longer, athletic guys at OT and a technician at OC. OG’s can be smaller but need to be nasty. As far as practice goes, we build from the ground up every single day. Steps, hips, punch, fit, finish, combos, hand fighting and leverage. #hogfbchat
A2: Might seem a little shortsighted, but it all starts w/ how we can run Power. Like to have a strong side so we know where we’re running when we really need it. If possible, like to have a guard that can be a primary puller. But most importantly, we want our best 5 #hogfbchat
A2: I like smart and either quick or strong at C, my Gs should be quick and not mind trapping or kicking out (must be gritty), Ts have to have a little size and power to them #hogfbchat
A2: Our scheme was tailored to fit what we liked. We loved a field gen @ C, 2 big mean G’s, and athletic most times undersized T’s... inside trap and Counter was huge for us. What we lacked in size we made up for in physicality and speed.
#hogfbchat
A2- one brick at a time. Weight room. Getting in a stance. Footwork. Hat/hand placement. Then to block techs of various schemes and blocks used. #hogfbchat
A2)
1. Sell the culture of selflessness.
2. Aim to demoralize opponent at LOS.
3. Must know/believe in each other off field as much as on field to work as unit. (Cookouts, breakfasts, movie nights, etc...)
4. Effort is greatest attribute, fundamentals comes next. #hogfbchat
A2: Find a C who is consistent and Smart to be coach on field. Even if a lesser athlete. LT best pass blocker, some length of possible, guards best pullers. #hogfbchat
A2: on field “building” is done through skill acquisition #OLP I only spent a month with the kids before this season and spent every moment on stance and footwork wether it be pulls or down blocks. #hogfbchat
A2: varies from year to year. Unbalanced single wing. Traditionally the Best goes to outside tackle, big body goes to Inside tackle, pulling guard at RG, brains at center and developmental guy at LG who can move a little. Currently my best is at Center
#HogFbChat
We also use 6/7 OL packages. Keeps guys engaged and gives more players a role. Heavy=6 OL in place of Y. Obese=6 OL in place of Y, 7 OL in place of F #HogFBChat
A2. Want my smartest player and most consistent snapper at C. My two best athletes that can move at the tackle positions (pass pro) and my two that are going to get after you the most while being able to move some on pulls at guard. #hogfbchat
A2 We run a lot (a LOT) of inside zone so we try to have our best three on the inside with our smaller, more athletic guys out at tackle since they are usually better at handling any kind of speed rush off the edge.
#hogfbchat
A2: Typically put our most athletic at guards so we can pull them. Outside of that it’s work with what we have. Adjust our offense to what we have up front. Next year we’ll be able to run more counter GT with the tackles we’ll have. #hogfbchat
A2) starts with our C. Has to be a kid that can get us Into all the checks and handle a NG. Longer athletic guys on the edge and our bigger dudes at guards. We try to build it that way, but we always make changes if something fits our kids a little better #hogfbchat
A2: weight room, tug drill, the sled, trap drill, 2on1s, 1on1s, live team period twice a week. Emphasize effort early in the season, progressively shift focus to technique later in the year. #hogfbchat
A2 wing t team C- has to snap under and gun G- have to be able to run a little T- are bigger guys that can run a little, but mostly down block. TE- more athletic version of a tackle that isn't scared to blast a LB. FB is a glorified guard #hogfbchat
A2: Work with each player to teach them how to move effectively and the why behind technique. Stress the importance of the weight room. Play the best 5. #hogfbchat
A2: depends on the scheme I’m coaching in. Spread OL looks different from flexbone OL double wing OL or SBV OL etc etc But for the sake of saying, in the spread, more length at the tackles, brains in the middle snapping the ball, and quicker and meaner at guards IMO. #hogfbchat
A2) The C is my QB, experienced or not, need to be heady & intelligent. My LT would have similar FB IQ but a little longer & (a lot) more athletic. RT is my big boy if I’ve got ‘em (still needs to reach end man on LOS & work well in space). Guards just gotta be nasty! #hogfbchat
A2: as a position profile, we generally put our maulers a guard & quickest OL athletes at tackle. Now, do I have a strict & clear measuring stick for a mauler or a quick OL. Not really, no. More "you know it when you see it." #hogfbchat
A2: I think that the fit and gel with the kids is huge! As far as the ‘build’ process I usually try and find my most athletic OT and build the LT position as a 2/3 year job. And go from there. I want long athletic tackles! And overall find kids who want to be leaders! #hogfbchat
A2: Ideally would like to have some beef in the middle and then longer more athletic guys at the tackles. In reality though if I can find 5 guys that can go and have at least two that I feel comfortable putting in the fire if I have to I’m pretty happy. #hogfbchat
A2: C must be able to shotgun snap and step, G’s are quick hitters the LB’s of the OL with a nasty spot in their DNA, T’s are longer with good feet like dancers that will kick your butt in a fight
#hogfbchat
Generally speaking. Like to have smarts and good ability to communicate at C. Sturdy and violent guys at Guard, and length/athleticism at Tackle. Toughness and physicality is a must for ALL #hogfbchat
A2: First you need to find and develop a Center. Then you put some big agile maulers at guards. Finally you can put a couple lengthy quick guys at tackles #hogfbchat
A2: A2: I prefer a big center that can stud up blitzing LBs without getting turned. Best Drive blockers/maulers at guards. Tackles have to have the best feet and be most versatile. #hogfbchat
A2?: I guess if we are talking about how we decide who plays where I realistically evaluate movement patterns within practice/scrimmages and decide from there. #hogfbchat
A2: Starts with standards and expectations. How we do what we do
Work until we have a sense of ownership - it is not “my OL” it is “our unit”
Skills before schemes - offseason strength and skill development
Communications - know the people in our room, build the bonds
#hogfbchat
C: SMART and GREAT communicator... has to have great parents, a 3.8 GPA in AP classes, and never missed a day of school in his life
G’s: most physical (would love to be 6’1-6’3 but we coach HS)
T’s: best athletes (would love for them to be 6’3 but we coach HS..)
#hogfbchat
Prefer to have the beef at the guards to help double and the lighter guys at the tackles and center. All need to have a grasp of every position and ideally have 3 guys I trust to snap in a game. #hogfbchat
A2 cont) One thing we do that I’ll try and do the rest of my career is use ALL our lineman. We have personnel groups with 7 OL on field aligned in backfield and TE, and we’ve had OL split out in a nice WR stance as a unbalanced #hogfbchat
A2 Continued: depends on what we have and what scheme best fits our personnel. Primary zone run, I like maulers at guard and more athletic guys at Center and Tackles. #hogfbchat
A2: CTR first - smart, tough, athletic. If I have to 'make' him a ctr, I will in Spring. My Gs can be small-big or inbetween, have great feet. My Ts MUST have good feet and ideally long arms and "be Dudes" My TE is a T w/best hands. All have to have GRIT! ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
Q1) Just want to add that you can play as fast as you want even when flipping. You tel your guys you’re in a formation for the whole drive until you tell them otherwise! I’ve done it! #hogfbchat
A2) Inside-out. C is critical for us, makes all calls. To do it well, must be football-smart and great communicator. Both can be taught. Want maulers at G, guys with some fight in them. Look for length at tackle, good feet. Can sacrifice size there. #hogfbchat
A2) Generally speaking. Like to have smarts and good ability to communicate at C. Sturdy and violent guys at Guard, and length/athleticism at Tackle. Toughness and physicality is a must for ALL #hogfbchat
A2. From the ground, up. Foundation built on development, with an emphasis on fundamental work and dedication in the off-season (S&C). Then we practice the technique and skills required to execute the schemes as a unit. Q2: How do you "build" your offensive line? #hogfbchat
A1: In jr high ball I have but not in sr high though not opposed to it. If you do you have to be cautious with your tendencies. Have played a team in the past that was really predictable based upon where the lineman were. Not necessarily swapping sides but a pulling G.#hogfbchat
A2) coming in late from CA. Usually we start with the guards. Ideally need guards who can run, OT’s who can down block and a C who can fight in a phone booth. #hogfbchat
A2: C- best snapper on team. Eventually will be taught to be the smartest OL. G- Beef. Quick feet. Strongest OL. Earth movers. T- longer. Most Athletic OL. Best pass blockers. #HogFbChat
A2 con’t) In addition, we watch film together and I show them cut ups of guys doing it on Saturdays and Sundays. We spend time in the classroom doing “OL School” where they learn everything from the history of the position to coverages and blitzes to schemes and tricks #Hogfbchat
A2 cont: To be a lineman, you have to be selfless and self-driven. That largely happens at home and in your informal interactions with the kids #hogfbchat
Definitely should be scheme related, I am not as concerned about intellect at C, C needs to be able to gun snap consistently and have grit, guards handle a fight in phone booth, tackles athletic, I feel like identification of fronts and scheme can be taught #hogfbchat
A2: inside to out...C has to be able to consistently ID fronts and be on point snapping, G's have to be able to get movement on inside runs and pull effectively, T's have to be able to win 1v1 matchups in run game and pass game. #hogfbchat
A2: cont. if we are talking type of players at each position... I’m taking the 5 most physical lineman and finding the best position for them after that. #hogfbchat
C - Smart kid, doesn’t have to be the most skilled of best. G’s - can move, strong kids - love the hefty fullback type guard. T - who doesn’t love the 6’5” long armed kid who can pass pro as well as reach a 5 and maul a 3? (With moves like this, ideally) #hogfbchat
I look for the guys who can play with the lowest pad level, who can play that low on the whole instep of the foot. Also the guys who are knee benders who can roll the hips and give great effort. The rest can be instilled through coaching and hard work #hogfbchat
A2 teach the basic fundamental stuff like footwork and hand placement first and rep it everyday. Show them how to use the fundamental stuff in their rules and how it applies to the game. I’m a huge fundamental guy #HOGFBCHAT
A2: huge part of it. We hang out in the offseason. Here we are Saturday watching one of our starters win the heavyweight wrestling district title #HogFbChat
A1: NO for the varsity...For JV, I thought about it, as our team was basically a freshman/newcomer team this year...but we just ran to our strong side 75% of the time minimum with the thought that teams would overload that side and give us opportunities weakside
#hogfbchat
Coach Poltrock, Power T guy. Milwaukee Wisco.... big hitter, the Lama – he hits one long, into a ten-thousand-foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-lagunga.
#hogfbchat
A2: Coach this is a question im going to be stalking everybodys answers. But usually,I put my best combination of blockers on a side. 2 guys that work the best together. Smart kid at C. & if possible I try to put my best pass blocker at RT because we have had Lefty QBs #HogFBChat
A2 our lifting program is a 9 week cycle. 3 weeks each of 8's 5's and 3's three days a week. T-Th is footwork, agility, mental toughness, and competition days. #hogfbchat
A:1 Absolutely, rules are so simple in our blocking scheme that this always any lineman to move from tackle to guard or vise versa. This allows us to move guys week to week based on matchups or the defense we are facing that week, odd vs even. #HogFBChat
In high school I wanted my best players at the guard position because they could help support centers and tackles. A great tackle is awesome but he can be on an island by scheme. Guards can elevate everyone’s play #hogfbchat
A2) cont. Biggest aspect of building quality OLs - buy into weight room. Guys committed to strength program not only improve physically, but mentally. Confidence increases as strength does, as well. #hogfbchat
A2: The weight room is the 1st place we get them to bond together. The more they sweat and work with one another, the more they will trust and care for one another. #hogfbchat
A3) Our best 5 play. The center must be able to turn the key, and our guards must be able to pull. We’ll piece everything else together from there #hogfbchat
A3: I think the main thing is willingness to be physical. Sometimes body type just doesn't do justice. But, in a perfect world, would love to see the interior guys with some beefed up lower-halves and some tackles with longer arms. #hogfbchat
A2: Taking over a young team, it was important to build Varsity & JV guys as a unit, bc there were no established boundaries...we had freshmen/sophomores who became varsity starters and displaced older guys, so egos had to be checked at the door...every day mattered!
#HogFBChat
A3: At Tackle I want some height if I have it, long legs that can cover ground in pass pro (I’m a Vert Set fan) guards can be shorter stocky guys but again mobile enough to pull is ideal. Center he can be the least athletic looking in my opinion. #hogfbchat
I would prefer my tackles being lanky, guards I would prefer being stockier but I actually want them to be the best athletes. And the center can be an extension of the guard position. #HogFbChat
A3: whatever is available at school... I’ll take 270+ across the board any day. But.. want my beefier guys inside and my taller, longer guys at tackle. Our area excels with big, strong DTs. Need to be able to handle them. #hogfbchat
A3- I want the meanest LT, LG, RG and RT I can find. Body type isn’t a big factory to me. I want lineman that E.A.T. Effort-Attitude-Technique. C has to be smart and be able to block/cut an wide A gap player. #hogfbchat
A3: In a perfect world you can have some longer, athletic guys playing OT, you put your gritty athletic guys at guard and you put your grittiest, less athletic guy at center #Hogfbchat
A3. Ideally I want the thicker sturdier guys on th interior. Long and athletic guys on the outside. At a 3A school of 6 in PA sometimes you have to work with what you’ve got. #HogFbChat
A3: tackle - long and athletic. Plays well with hands and feet. Guard - more stout and loves contact. Love it when they are mean. C - oversized fullback that can id fronts and is the toughest bunch of the lot. #hogfbchat
A3) I want the body type of a kid who will give every ounce of his soul to his brothers on the team! If he does that I will find a spot on the line for that player! #hogfbchat
A3: small school, so whatever we can get. Went 11-1 last year with 175 lb. LT and 155 lb. LG... Took advantage of the skills each of our athletes had and put them in situations to succeed #hogfbchat
A4) Lean and the ability to move! We are all objects of inertia in our stance - if we cannot properly drive our weight out of our stance we will lose the battle up from. #FTTG#hogfbchat
A3) Center - don't care about body - want smart, cool under pressure. Guard - physical, tough, great feet to pull, Tackle - Long, athletic, good at down blocks. #hogfbchat
Nothing good happens if you can't count on the Center! Major key to our success this year was @TarantoTanner absolute warrior who made us go! #hogfbchat
A3) I don’t know we never get them 😂! Seriously, being wing t based- most athletic guys at G, bigger/ less mobile guys at T and usually a smart, and/or tough guy at C. #hogfbchat
A3: #hogfbchat The body type that is most effective and efficient at executing their responsibilities. If they can play, they can play! No square pegs in round holes here. It’s not rocket surgery!
A3 basketball players that are constantly in foul trouble on the outside, wrestlers on the inside. Center has to be a DUDE. We're a small school though so we play with what we have and coach em like freakin crazy.
#hogfbchat
A3 I’ve seen great OL w so many differences - think it’s a mistake to have an ideal body type - I’ve seen Thick/Thin Tall/Short get it done. Give me a kid who competes, has above average strengths and has football IQ and lets roll! #hogfbchat
Nick Lebo OL Coach Reagan HS Austin, TX. A1: We switches to a Wing T offense during our bye week and began to flip lineman with a strong/quick side in order to get our kids in the best position to fit their strengths. #hogfbchat
More interested in the heart and attitude of the kid. Seen the biggest dudes get whipped by the smallest. Tackles are usually our big dawgs. Guards are our stalky “quick” guys. Center is somewhere in between with the best hips. #HogFbChat
It all comes down to matchups. I’ve had games where Belly and Counter to weak side were my best plays the whole game. The “less talented” weak side isn’t really less talented when they get to be really good at their side’s plays. #hogfbchat
A3: Center- smart, good ball skills so they can execute shot gun snap. Guards- people movers, violent players, must be able to trap and wrap. Tackles- longer players that can move well. #hogfbchat
A3: we need QUICK linemen. So many down blocks and pulling in the Wing-t. I’ll take big horses, but they’re gonna have to fire off the ball flat down the line on our down blocks. #hogfbchat
A3: in our system I like having quick footed tackles that can down block effectively. Mobile, athletic guards that know how to use leverage. And my center needs to be the smartest one. Those are the minimums but we all work with what we got. #hogfbchat
A3: Not as much of a player profile type guy...if I have 5 road graders, guess my spread behind better RPO...Run Power Often! But want quicker tackles and heavier junkyard dog OGs....and i'll adjust run game based on deficiencies
#HogFBChat
A3: Tackles are dudes who hit that growth spurt and aren't TE/WR anymore! Guards? Give me your 250lb wrestler types. You know the guys who may or may not "take liberties" under the pile. #HogFbChat
A2: I personally want some guys that are not afraid to mix it up and get after it in the weightroom. Have seen a difference in our play since we have developed a great in and off season weight program. Then we really focus on technique and pad level. #hogfbchat
A3. Whatever type displaces/moves the defensive line in the run game and pass protects the best in the pass game. All types, the best 5. Q3: What sort of body type do you want playing each position? #HogFbChat
A3: body type doesn’t matter to me. Again, it’s all about movement patterns. If a kid is athletic he can play tackle. IDEALLY I’d like kids with length at tackle. But if I have a 6’3” 270 pound kid that doesn’t move well in space I’m putting him at guard. #hogfbchat 1/2
A3: T’s taller with longer arms and flexibility, G’s shorter and thicker and flexibility, C’s a heartbeat and a desire to deliver a perfect snap every time
#hogfbchat
A3) OT- Long and athletic. We have faced 3 DEs the last 2 years that are now playing Power 5. OG- Can be smaller but strength and nasty are a must. OC- Technician and intelligent. He makes most of the audible calls and IDs certain things per scouting report. #hogfbchat
I have not done #hogfbchat in a while, but glad to see @Coach_Goudeau on here! Really good offensive coach we have squared off against the past few years, y'all should follow him!
A3: ideally our smartest at center. He has to be quick enough to block back on a 3.
Our best feet and operators in space at tackle.
Our dawgs at guard. They have to love running their face through something over and over and over again. #hogfbchat
A3: I have never been tied to a particular body type...although back in my Full-T days our Center was the biggest body who could snap consistently and not give ground. Lot of this depends on scheme...#hogfbchat
A2: and last year when we volunteered at the spca to clear out a dog walking path through the woods. Or when we collected supplies for flood victims. Anything we can do to hang together #HogFbChat
A3: Body type isn’t as important as athleticism. Be able to do multiple things well. Bend, shift, adjust on the fly, run with a bent knee. Have watched both 5’11 270 and 6’4 270 do it well. Not sure if that’s an answer. But. #hogfbchat
A3: Would love to have all my guys be 6 foot 4 and 300 LBS, but we will only get one of them every couple years. Get your top 5 blockers on the field and put them in a position to be be successful. #hogfbchat
A3) Lean and the ability to move! We are all objects of inertia in our stance - if we cannot effectively drive our own weight, how can we move someone-else’s? #FTTG#hogfbchat
A3 cont: We’re 1A and were spoiled with a 260 lb avg line for a few years. We took a 165lb guard (future Marine) and 180lb tackle on our quick side and rode them all the way to semi state. #hogfbchat
A3: Ideally, a big physical mauler at T, athletic with quick feet at G can be shorter, and at C don't care about size, just want a smart physical kid. #hogfbchat
A3: conversely, if I have a 5’11” kid that utilizes the proper angles and can stop an edge rush he’ll play tackle. For me it all depends on movement. All of my guys will have the same “mauler” mentality and operate within the confines of our technique and scheme. #hogfbchat
A3.
QT— TE that can’t catch.
QG— our best middle linebacker.
C— big nasty
SG— big, but a little less nasty
ST— the biggest and the nastiest.
#HogFbChat
A2: spending time together in the weight room, film room, and the sled. Honestly the more time they spend together the better. I'm just there to facilitate. #hogfbchat
A3: Body type is just icing on the cake. Work Ethic, Selflessness and Drive are way more important than how we “look”. Underestimate them at your own peril.😉
Big guys are ideal but with enough ambition it’s our job to make it work imo
#HogFbChat
A3: I just want my tackles to have the footwork necessary to kick back in pass pro. Other than that, I don't care too much. Length on the edge is nice to have but often difficult to find. I want my guards to be able to get up to the second level. #HogFBChat
A3 C- can be bigger has to be able to get the snap.
G- are more athletic can run. T- are bigger good feet. Maulers that finish blocks. TE- more athletic version of a T that can run a flag or drag. In the wing t, they all need a little nasty. The more the better #hogfbchat
A3: Want???? 6'3+ 290+ erry-where is what I want. Not really something we get to choose in high school. My tackles have to be able to protect the edge. Inside has to get great vertical movement on all runs regardless of size. #hogfbchat
A3 I have my plan and then we get the kids. We don’t get to choose who we coach and I’ve coached some pretty good lines and none of them fit into the template I’d prefer #hogfbchat
A3: mean and can move at RG, Big & strong at inside tackle, athletic and big at outside tackle, shorter and athletic at center, developing for one of those other 4 spots at LG #HogFbChat
A3) Would love kids between 170 and 300 that are willing to sell out to make their buddies successful. With that: C-Big, strong kid can handle nose alone, smart-he's in charge. G's-Quick, athletic, hard nosed kids who think they should be fullbacks. T's-big, strong. #hogfbchat
A3: I mean I could dream up a great looking OL, but in reality I look for the 5 best guys regardless of body type. Gotta have some fight in them and be mentally strong. Body type isn’t everything. Need more dawgs! #hogfbchat
A2: A lot of crosstraining. Get guys to learn all five spots, and learn the jobs for each because we teach the whole scheme, not just what each person does. That way they know what each other does on every play. #HogFBChat
A3: Love having the little bulldogs on the inside. Guys that made it toughest on me we’re under 6 foot, sub-260, but would absolutely maul because they were quick, could bench a TON, and just believed they belonged #hogfbchat
Great question. I will tell you our season took a turn when we faced an All American SEC DE. I put my “too short too slow” Senior guard at RT. I knew he would play hard & his effort would give us a shot. I am lucky enough to recruit to the ideal but will take grit 1st #hogfbchat
A3) 5'10", 215 lbs. C was one of best offensive lineman I've ever coached. Great effort, finisher, mean as hell. Those traits more important than size at this level, IMO. Learned hard way that focus solely on physical attributes will get ya beat. #hogfbchat
Ideally my C and G’s are the point men/lifter on combos, T/C is the closer who most of the time climbs, obviously all positions the more athletic the better, this is HS OL for me (usually last picked man), mental toughness, ability to be compatible are more important #hogfbchat
A3 best 5 replaces body types but the C needs quick hands and torso and legs are proportional. G’s need quick feet and a low center of gravity. T’s need to be best athletes with long arms and great lateral quickness. #hogfbchat
A3: We're a small school - outside of Ts, who I need as big as possible, w/out sacrificing athleticism, I take and build what I get! As long as they have Grit and Desire, I can build of those to traits. ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
A3 I mean if we could have some 6’8 300lbs dudes that’d be nice. Realistically we get everyone who isn’t a skill player and make it work. Preferably I’d like to have my smartest kid at center #HOGFBCHAT
I honestly don't care much about body type. Obviously, it is a great bonus if they have both girth and athleticism. My biggest want is that they have "A great desire to move another person from point A to point B against their will" - Russ Grimm.#hogfbchat
A1: Typically not, best case I have the same five starting in the same five spots every game. Doesn't always work out that way, and I often have to shuffle multiple guys around if just one injury happens. However, I will teach guys multiple spots for versatility. #HogFBChat
A3: Guys who are willing to get after the guy across from them. At a small school most years I don’t have the ideal body type for all 5 positions. So I look for 5 guys that can explode off the ball. If they win the initial push we can avoid negative run plays. #hogfbchat
A3: coaching HS football you gotta take what you can find the in hallways. I have no size or measurement requirements. I tell my kids all the time, I want tough kids and some dogs! We show this clip to start every season and multiple times in it https://t.co/LcIvlnat74#HogFbChat
I am currently not in a position to be picky. I don't have anyone with "prototypical" size. I guess I am blessed because I have a group of guys who are giving me a ton of effort in the weightroom. "If you can't be large in stature, be large in the weightroom!" #hogfbchat
Johnathan Harrison OLINE & Strength Coach Hanford High School, Richland. WA. Texas transplant in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. As usual, I'm late to the party. #hogfbchat
A4: depends on his “fit.” Sometimes my best lineman was a nasty center. Other times he was a tackle. Another time it was guard. Depends on the offense and his “strengths.” #hogfbchat
A4- Where he is comfortable. In a perfect world I would say LT, but C is the most important. C usually isn’t my best lineman, but he’s the most important. #hogfbchat
A4: traditionally Left Tackle especially in the spread, have to keep a Right handed quarterback from getting drilled from the blindside as much as possible #hogfbchat
A4) really depends on where he fits. Ideally you have a DUDE at LT and C. But if he’s best at G, and the personnel fits around him well, then play him there. #HOGFBCHAT
A4: Really depends on his skillset. If there is one guy who is clear-cut better than everyone else, he is probably playing tackle for me, because there is more help inside at the guard spots and especially at center. But if the best guy has slow feet, he's playing G. #HogFBChat
I get what you're saying. Some guys talent level go against body type. Mostly just a starting point. Like long lean tackles. Two years ago we were 5'7 250 at T. #hogfbchat
A4: Moving to a power scheme in a couple years so it's most likely going to be one of our guards. But right now they typically are at tackle in the offense our school runs. To echo other coaches though, best 5 is what we're limited to with numbers in the program #hogfbchat
A4) Best pure OL is probably the C. Has to be smart, be able to move every direction, be on an island, and he touches the ball every play. Depends a bit on the kid's style, though. I've had the best kid at C, G, T, and TE. It's not a given, just a rough mold. #hogfbchat
A4: my best OL is placed where I need them based on their movement patterns. There’s a recurring theme, here. I’m not going to willingly take a kid that moves like a guard and throw them to the wolves at tackle. It doesn’t make sense to categorize linemen 1/2 #hogfbchat
Since we are talking flipping lines tonight... Patrick Ewing - Split Tackle. Muggsy - Split guard. Charles Barkley - Center. Larry Johnson - Tight guard. Shawn Bradley - Tight Tackle. #hogfbchat
A4) In a perfect world our guards are our best two guys- glorified fullbacks. However if we need a guy it’s at RT because we are running power UC and in the Gun. Luckily we will have a 3 year starter there. #hogfbchat
A4.
ST and SG (if I had to pick, it’d be tackle).
If I can count on you to block down on that 3, get great push, and not allow penetration, pretty much everything else will work out just fine in our system.
All I want is a pancake every play. Not too much to ask! #HogFbChat
A4: best athlete - has to play tackle vs 7A GA competition. Best run blocker has to play guard or center - really depends on the front we play too. #hogfbchat
A4- best at what? Gappers-tackles. Win fight in a phone booth-center. Fearless pullers-guard. Best overall goes to center if he can snap. LT if he can’t. #hogfbchat
We build our offensive line in the weight room during the off-season and challenge them to be the most powerful line in our district. We put the most reliable player at center and then find two guards who can trap and pull. #hogfbchat
A4: If he can move, we’re probably putting him at G. We’re pulling on a majority of plays so I like a butt kicker at the strong side G position. If the best OL is better at straight up moving bodies, he’s our strong side T #hogfbchat
Seems like C, LT and Pulling G are consistent positions where the best have ended up. Best TEAMS had best guy at C. When the middle is great everything else can fall in place. #HogFbChat
A4: Center!!! Have to protect those A gaps first, and when you play center you have to block for a second with your hand between your legs. Centers are usually the smartest and most athletic in my opinion. FYI I played center #hogfbchat
A4: traditionally always at outside tackle. Weird year for me in that my Center is returning as a 1st team all conference 1st team all region 2nd team all state player and I am not planning on moving him. My Center snaps to 3 different backs on any given play #HOGFBCHAT
A4) LT but not opposed to RT. OTs get more 1-on-1 blocks and we have faced some dudes at DE the last 2 years. Tried putting them at G and it didn’t turn out like I would have liked. OC is also a possibility if he meets my 2 criteria because of our offense. #hogfbchat
A4: RG, Being right hand biased, he has to get vertical push on a 3T and still be responsible for his gap, also has to be able to down block, and pull inside and out, and pass set on 3T usually without help. #hogfbchat
Since we are flipping the line... Patrick Ewing - Split Tackle. Muggsy - Split guard. Charles Barkley - Center. Larry Johnson - Tight guard. Shawn Bradley - Tight Tackle. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Given the talk about building an OL, I thought I would share the best OL in the State of GA this season, all 5 OL and both TE’s played all 13 games. Testament to @CarterGrizzlyFB and their work in the Wt. Room and our Trainer. 💪🏼
A4. Tough one, used to be you faced mostly even fronts so your guards were the animals (covered vs. uncovered), but now you see the odd fronts in vogue. Again, it goes back to best 5 on the field. Q4: Where do you play your best offensive lineman? #hogfbchat
A4: Wherever he is best. Best players in their best position hopefully gives the guys their best team and allows us to put them in the best positions to have success! #hogfbchat
A3: This is a tough one. The answer off the top of my head is LG. You have to be able to run the rock to be successful. I want my best guys closest to the point of attack as possible. #hogfbchat
A4: where ever their strengths best suit the best 5, ideally at T, but they may be the best inline blocker and puller which I would place at G, most of my guys can play multiple pos., this way the 6th man can play most anywhere #hogfbchat
A4: Where ever he plays his best...My job is to design plays that take advantage of where he is great...hopefully, its LT, but have had a DOG that played LG and we ran Iso till the cows came home...
#hogfbchat
A4: based on size. Athleticism and general movement patterns are the most important thing on the line. If they can’t move through the 8 angles with ease they need to be evaluated and figure out WHY. It’s tough to find a guy that will fit the mold at all 5 positions. #hogfbchat
A4: depends on what is going to be our teams best schemes year to year. We usually live & die on Power & Inside Zone, so our RG is usually a dude for us. We also look for a tackle that can be versatile, being able to down block & set an edge on outside runs #hogfbchat
A4) So many different answers to this. It’s usually determined by scheme. Smartest plays center. Longest/biggest/athletic play at the tackle spots. But usually my best all around linemen/football players play guard. #hogfbchat
A4) cont…we ask them to do the most: relay calls, combo/double with centers AND tackles (switch games in pass pro too), pull, and are vital piece to our screens. #hogfbchat
A4) I think it depends on the other 4. Best OL this fall played LT, kid with multiple offers. Probably better fit on interior, but meshed with next best 4 by playing on edge. #hogfbchat
A4: depends what makes him my best. I’ve spent years sub-varsity so I usually try to put them in the position they will be in on Friday Nights. Might be best for JV to have him at G, but may be a T long term for example #hogfbchat
A4) I love to play my best lineman at the Guards but that’s bc I pull with them a lot! However, if my best lineman was also my best & most consistent snapper I wouldn’t hesitate to put them at Center! #StartsWithTheSnap#hogfbchat
A4 that’s a tough one. I’d like to have my smartest guy at center, but it’s helpful to have your best guy at the blindside tackle. Honestly I’d love to hear people’s opinions on this #HOGFBCHAT
A4 cont.
That being said... where I come from, having a Center that I know for a 100% fact will get the ball to the Q every time is like gold. If I find that guy, I want him to marry my daughter. #HogFbChat
A4: Wherever he fits. Been with teams that the best lineman was our Split guard, been on teams where it was our LT. Been on teams where it was our center. Some kids can be great guards and not great tackles... can still be great lineman. Just depends on skill sets! #hogfbchat
A4: it’s been my experience to put them where it makes your team the best. Just because they are the best in one position doesn’t mean they are versatile enough to play another. My first year it was C, 2nd was LT, 3rd was C, 4th LG, 5th LG/LT (toss up)
#HogFbChat
A4: We play our best OLineman at Strong Guard because we are a gap team that runs a lot of Pwr, Ctr, and Buck. We need someone who can trap, log, pull, and move someone on a double team. Thanks for introducing me to the #hogfbchat@nickzaji
A3 and A4 together: Ballplayers come in all shapes and sizes. We put them in positions to best express their athletic abilities and skills. Must be efficient in movement and technically sound. I look for movement/ability. Then we get them in shape and teach the game. #hogfbchat

A3) it depend on the kids and the schemes for the season.
Dart? Athletic tackles who can also work up to backers on trap.
Power? Athletic guards.
Center? Quick enough to block back.
Pass pro? Just get in the way!!! The Q will throw quick! Lol.
#HOGFBCHAT
And that's a wrap Coaches! Thank you all again for participating in the Monday night #hogfbchat! We appreciate you all for being here and for contributing tonight in the fastest hour on Twitter! #AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo#OLPride
I would play my best offensive lineman where his attributes would help him to be the most successful. I have to be confident that I can coach my other boys to fill the various holes needed #hogfbchat
A4: Power/Ctr as base run I like playing my best at guard who can consistently skip pull and wrap tight to get to the second level quickly and stack on track to Lb. disciplined to kick out on counter even when end is a positive pin player. #hogfbchat
If anybody has any questions or topics they would like discussed on a future #Hogfbchat PLEASE DM myself or @CoachDingus and we will get to them as best as possible! #hogfbchat
I hate to use"best". My C has to be dependable because he calls our protection. My guards are vital because we be pullin pullin. My tackles are important because they have to make hard down blocks and pass pro the other teams studs. So in short, they all must be best. #hogfbchat
I don’t participate but I follow sometimes and I gotta say #HogFbChat coming with some fire questions tonight. Bravo dudes... hard hitting and very insightful. #SIKE#BeBetter
#hogfbchat coaches if any of you are local to SoCal, Chaparral will be hosting a lineman competition "Under the Lights" this summer in Temecula! Check the flyer below and hope to see some of you there!
A3: gotta be able to move. I've had every body type at every position. Good hips, good feet, and good eyes. 5 of those make a good line. Ideally, thick center able to go 1v1. Quick, stumpy guards, and tall tackles with a good wing span #hogfbchat

For sure, but if he can’t work with the other guy, his steps are not repeatable, or just doesn’t feel comfortable we’re hopefully not going to allow him to struggle. I have a real fear of square pegs in round holes. I want to coach strengths and confident kids ideally
#HogFbChat
Wherever he is needed most. My best lineman this past year had always played LG but our biggest need was tackle and we had alittle more depth inside so we bumped him over. #hogfbchat
A1 not in a true sense but I expect them to be able to play both sides without any drop off...doesn’t work for every guy but hopefully have two who can cover for the rest in an injury pinch #hogfbchat
A4: luckily we had some smart guys on the line this year. Despite all being 1st yr guys, they all took to our scheme quick #runthepower. I won't say best, but my most consistent guy played guard, then center. Never quit #hogfbchat
We like “bigs” that can pull off a 1/2 shirt under their shoulder pads. Size and body type means nothing. I want a kid that is sure of himself, confident, has some grit, and understands what we are trying to accomplish up front. #HogFbChat
A3 6’4 260 studs across the line would be nice, but I can make due with tackles that are either strong or big (because they won’t be both), smaller quicker guards, and an annoyingly talkative center of any body type #hogfbchat
A1: I dont, but was tempted to once. I'm sure there are people who are good at repping it, but I've always believed in Raymond Berry's one man, one position, max reps from one look philosophy. #hogfbchat
If anyone has some good resources on Run Schemes that fit both the Spread & WingT I’d love to get my hands on them. Practice time is limited bc our kids are 2way players I’m thinking that Gap schemes: Buck, Power, CTR, & Trap would be the building blocks of the offense #hogfbchat
A2 Ideally take the top five available and fit them where it works. To make that work I encourage kids to know multiple spots at all levels. Try to have at least three guys who can function - physically and mentally -at center if called upon #hogfbchat
A2 cont - if given a mix of bodies then long/strong at T’s, quicker with some pop at G’s, but I think I’m HD it’s more about knowledge/experience levels than bodies. ie put a raw underclassman between two seniors so they can talk/help him through struggles/challenges #hogfbchat
A4: Always my center. I rely on them to do so much physically and mentally. They're told that if they make a mistake it's their fault and if the line makes a mental mistake, it is also their fault. The center is the guy I'd want with me in a foxhole. #hogfbchat
A3: A body type that will take ownership in what he does and give all he’s got every down. Sure big bodies will come and survive but I can’t coach a player to be 6’6 315 lbs and won’t tell him to go back and change his genetics #HogFbChat
