School leaders, how do you support your LGBT staff?
On online survey of LGBT people found that only 51% were open about their sexuality to everyone at work.

#BETT2018#UKEdChat A1: I am currently a student studying education, so I haven't been able to implement technology into my classroom. I hope to be an average user of technology. I want to incorporate it, but I don't want it to rule the classroom.
#Bett2018#UKEdChat A1: Iād say Iām average. I use a smartbord daily but I definitely do not use it to itās full potential... I would like to do more on it. All lessons are online, lots of interactive educational games, most lessons are tech based.
A1 I think I am naturally above average in my use of technology due to the fact that I lead Computing. I have pushed to have lots of physical computing in my classroom this year #inspireanengineer#BETT2018#UKEdChat
#BETT2018#UKEdChat Q1
Do you think you are above, below, or an average user for the amount of technology you use in your teaching?

#ukedchat A1: def above average but now Iāve moved schools itās taken me a while to get to grips with new equip (unused) and I miss old tech I had like iPads, webcams outside, radio etc
#Bett2018#ukedchat I think it def has an impact on learning, it gets the childrenās attention and they can relate in many ways; however, I strongly believe that a great lesson can be on point without tech, just a motivated teacher and chd willing to learn.
A2. Iāve been thinking about this recently during a period of investment in new hardware. What measures really demonstrate learning progresses at a rate which justifies the expenditure? Iām not suggesting they donāt exist, Iām just not sure I can point to it. #BETT2018#UKEdChat
#BETT2018#UKEdChat A2: I think that it definitely has an impact on learning. We live in a world that is full of technology, and students need to have the skills to navigate technology.
A2 I suppose it depends what tech you use. Hardware is often expensive, software ranges from free to expensive. Have to make sensible choices, i.e. based on impact on learning... #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A2: it can be but often schools buy things without proper knowledge or forethought and they sit in a cupboard unused. This happened at my current school with their unusual choice of tablet. Often happens with hand held stuff too
A2 I think it is value for money if staff are appropriately trained in how to use it (and if they can see the value in using it). If they do not value tech or cannot be bothered then it isn't value for money #BETT2018#UKEdChat
A2: It can have an impact but needs to be embraced by all and relies more on the teacher's attitude to the technology more than anything. #BETT2018#UKEdChat
#ukedchat A2: there are some pieces of cheap tech that are incredibly powerful. My long term favourite was the easiscope. Brings nature to life! Also the bird box cam we had for many years was very powerful all ages and less than Ā£100
A1. Average user, but am heavily investigating using more tech within my lessons and department. Am looking at America for inspiration. #BETT2018#UKEdchat
#Bett2018#ukedchat A3 The kids in my class absolutely love playing interactive educational games on the smartboard as introduction or a plenary. They also enjoy homework which is assigned via an ed electronic platform- they actually ask for it!
A3 if we talk about a specific example then we are talking about a specific piece of tech and not tech itself. When the tech fades into the background and learning happens, that successful use. #ukedchat
#ukedchat A3: Skype is amazing - especially when you use it with role play. Iāve been dressed up as a fictional explorer with a fake backdrop and fan (wind!) in another room discussing my latest adventures with ks1
#BETT2018#UKEdChat A3: I haven't taught in a classroom yet, but when I was a senior in high school we were issued laptops which helped with getting homework done and applying to colleges.
#ukedchat A3: the collaborative Santa mystery blog (linking multiple schools in uk and abroad) is my relatively simple in tech terms but I love it every year, this years https://t.co/Weylp5Z4em
A1 suspect I am average... Have rejected some things in favour of things I have found to work... Don't go for the latest gimmicks, my subject is awesome, it doesn't need trickery to jazz it up #UKEdChat@ukedchat
Sometimes it can all feel like a gamble, but resources have to be allocated to teachers on using #edtech for their benefit and the improvement of teaching and learning #ukedchat#BETT2018
Unfortunatelythere is still the view that this tech or that is good or not. Use of tech is for supporting learning - so we need to be more creative in designing learning experiences that are based in good practice and the tech enhances. #ukedchat
A3 Google quizzes have been great for engaging parents in supporting their kids at home, email link to kids and parents, lots of parents doing them alongside/in competition with their kids #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A4: had a lot of trouble with radio initially, mainly opening ports but worked with months of perseverance. Learn pads at my current school put in b4 are causing me no end of grief #willgetthere
A3. Recent observation with Yr11 class. Students had to complete an information organiser. They were shared a @ThingLink with links to differentiated websites and a @padlet wall set up for questions to identify misconceptions. #BETT2018#ukedchat
From a leadership & management perspective Iāve had some success with a bespoke app that supports lesson observation. Instead of only written notes, it allows time stamped photo, video, audio evidence to be attached to a specific focus. #BETT2018#UKEdChat
A4 anything where kids upload homework... Too many opportunities for them to claim tech failure and I find it easier to work with physical pages #UKEdChat#Bett2018

A1 physical tech where I work is limited and so my use of it is limited but I'm trying and trialling apps, Twitter, Google Classroom etc to great effect #ukedchat#BETT2018
#ukedchat thank you šIāve done this a few times but they never seem to realise its me! I enjoy it as much as them! Think they buy into the whole imagination thing!
Do you think about the observation process from the teachers perspective? Recalling the times you were observed? #ukedchat Genuine question #reflection#bett2018
A4 Work have invested in smart tv 'boards'. They haven't trained staff and so whatever clever elements they have, we don't know about/how to use. Half the time, turning the buggers on is our tech achievement #ukedchat#Bett2018
We think lesson observation is something positive done with you, not done to you. Weāve taken inspiration from @OTeaching who weāve based a lot of our work on. And the belief in the power of video & using it for self-reflection. Tech enabled it to happen. #Bett2018#UKEdChat
We had this problem in my schools as well. It seemed like so much time was spent on training teachers how to use it that teachers didn't have time to actually learn how it would assist learning. #ukedchat
#ukedchat A2: there are some pieces of cheap tech that are incredibly powerful. My long term favourite was the easiscope. Brings nature to life! Also the bird box cam we had for many years was very powerful all ages and less than Ā£100
A5. Don't necessarily search for something to match what I want. Twitter helps but also came and across and purchased this :https://t.co/aad0y7VC21. Am slowly working through looking for ideas and some inspiration. #bett2018#ukedchat
They do fairly regular learning walks and obs. They also ask students so whilst not directly they do know about my trials. I also teach on the PGCE so I share with trainees my endeavours. #bett2018#ukedchat
A5 I research on social media, by reading @HelloWorld_Edu, by attending TeachMeets and by buying it and testing it myself (mainly resources for Primary Computing) #BETT2018#UKEdChat
#BETT2018#UKEdChat A5 So far, EdTech has been presented to me in classroom settings. I think social media is usually where I go to search for an item/service.
@OTeaching Teaching Backwards, levelling up and FACE has transformed one of my schools. From planning to teaching to learning to lesson observation. #UKEdChat

#bett2018#ukedchat A6: again follow all tech people on Twitter. I also try to to local ict shows and conferences and find out from other teacher friends what their investing in...
A3 Anyone noticed how much more photographs are being taken for work related things.Instead of copying or photocopying, etc. People just take pics. Thatās an example of how tech is embedded, in the background, useful & not something we are made to do as āgood practise! #ukedchat
#BETT2018#UKEdChat A6: Again, I mainly use social media as a platform for keeping up to date. I feel like it is the best way to learn about fresh ideas and developments. Does anyone have a journal or paper that they read?
#ukedchat#bett2018 A3: keep answering this one! I actually found VLE really powerful as taught so much e-safety thru it through use of role play and historical character accounts, using Email, messaging, livechat etc
I went on digital training and saw apps being used for specific subjects. I taught myself the app stuff but again the training in how to use a dartboard would have doubled the impact. I don't have my own classroom so no time to trial that bit!
Money doesnāt need to be spent. Invest in your own research and time in exploring what really could work in your setting and your classroom #UKEdChat#BETT2018

Some really interesting & insightful @ukedchat regarding #edtech tonight. Love how willing teachers are to embrace new technologies alongside traditional learning methods. #ukedchat#Bett2018
@ukedchat excited to launch the #bookbabbleuk hashtag today! Helping teachers, parents & children source quality texts via Twitter recommendations. Letās get the book talk flowing! #UKedchat
Fundamentally, itās because they love their jobs, and believe in the opportunities and abilities of their pupils #UKEdChat Teachers want their pupils to achieve, for their futures #BETT2018
My answer to this is the same as my answer to Q5...

Apologies if question came across as flippant. Some say āweā etc., when actually not everyone is invested in the concept. #ukedchat is about reflecting on practice as well #BETT2018
#BETT2018#UKEdChat A7: I love BrainPop! Works as a great intro to the subject to get students engaged, and there are other supplemental materials that can assess learning.
I know first hand that that's true. I experience the dedication, determination & passion of teachers every day within the schools I engage with. #Bett2018#ukedchat

#bett2018#ukedchat A7:recently Iām loving seesaw. Itās so easy for kids to upload stuff. I also like j2e, code for life and myliveschool radio project and the birdbox project but been involved in that for years
A6 Rely alot on Twitter and online reviews/chatrooms. Working in Guernsey, not easy to get to Teachmeets (sometimes getting off and on island is difficult and v.expensive + education dept not paying for off island CPD) #bett2018#ukedchat
#BETT2018#UKEdChat A8: I think it could be cool to see a 'social media' strictly for learning purposes. Almost Canvas-esque but more relatable for the students to communicate and work socially.
Wondering how far along preparing for GDPR other schools are.
The question of who should be Dpo is causing me a headache.
What are others planning.
Particularly like to hear from small schools, with small staff conflicts of interest seem problematic.
A8 More of a hope than think, but improved virtual tours - limited access to historic places on Guernsey, so "taking" students on visits "virtually" impossible as too expenisve. #bett2018#ukedchat
#Bett2018#ukedchat A8: will have to answer this again as other great things have been easiscope, easispeak, puppet pals app, morfo app and Skype. Thereās so much great stuff out there...and my green screen
A8. I think it will be around ābring your own deviceā becoming the norm in schools. And schools shifting to accommodate that and teach responsible use, the power at your fingertips for research, but also for āfake newsā etc. Less about specific apps. #BETT2018#UKEdChat

Nothing yet, but are looking at changing HR provider so might get it with a new package, also looking with 2 other local schools to employ someone, or adding hours to existing person to do it across the schools. LA are offering v expensive SLA.
Spot on. Still many hurdles and beliefs to challenge and accept #UKEdChat Heard about it at #BETT2018 with the @SMART_Tech presentation in the main arena, with some schools using BYOD regularly. We need to accept kids have the tech. Up to us to support responsible use.

#bett2018#ukedchat A8: next big thing def virtual reality. I want holographic dinosaurs projected onto the playground (I know you can sort of do this is FX guru)
