So great to see many familiar and new faces tonight. Looking forward to an awesome conversation about review - Q1 on the way
Dear 'rs,
You need to listen to + ---->
Insightful perspectives and she knows her stuff!
. . You mean there's a light at the end of this tunnel?
. Here is to hoping they go wire to wire just like in 2005! Go Sox! :)
Congrats. I'm finishing the portfolio tonight and my last class in the next 4 weeks. Not a lot of free time
Lisa from Hershey, PA. Joining for a bit.
What did you get it in? I need to get a 2nd one some time soon!
I think so.... I hope so....
A1 Reviewing gives Ss another exposer to content and skills. A time to reflect on past learning.
Curriculum and Instructional Technology. Most of my artifacts were of ...shocking, I know
Hi Briley! How is the weather down in Bermuda? (Whatever it is, it has to be better than the 40s in Chicago! :(
A1, I review not just at end of the topic but after lesson. Mini plenaries are so important for us to understand knowledge
A1 Review helps organize a student's thoughts for a summative. Also necessary when formative assessment indicates a need.
Hi Lisa! Glad you could make it!
A1 I review for mastery check; because Ss feel comfort; and because it's mandated ;)
A1: One of the reasons I review is that it is expected … and 6th graders don’t have study skills to do on their own yet
A1:
1 To build Ss confidence
2 To find out who needs help
3 Instill fear into Ss hearts/souls
4 To develop Ss learning habits
Will be lurking for tonight!
YES! In the day to day rush to cover material this often gets lost.
need to learn why review is important. https://t.co/7UkDubpFi8
A1: One of the reasons I review is that it is expected … and 6th graders don’t have study skills to do on their own yet
Thank you so much. Humbled.
A1: Whether I like it or not, right now needed review is for EOC testing (that occurs 6 wks b/f end of school)
A1 I review from day to day to keep the story of places going - not so much for big exams.
This yr has been new 4 me. Have given very few quizzes & been more skill focused along w/ projects. More practice than review
Sometimes my reviews are openly more complex then the test. It makes the test a breeze https://t.co/zYaPcr9eOe
A1 I review for mastery check; because Ss feel comfort; and because it's mandated ;)
A1: It helps Ss AND teacher make sure content has been clearly communicated, explored. Rewriting LPs is a lesson I've learned
A1. Pulling together pieces and parts to highlight the big ideas and themes of the unit/course.
A1:To revisit old material before traveling on & making connections. Reflection is important!+school tests that count as 50%..
Have we ever asked why it is mandated?
Definitely need to teach those basic skills in jr high
A1 - at beginning of year to model for students how to do it for themselves. at the end of year to reinforce learning
Ken from Western Oregon Univ. Finally checking in
is there a way to use as a process to review?
A1 can we really feed forward with content if we haven't reviewed Ss understanding?
This goes for me too. Less testing means less reviewing - for good & bad. https://t.co/xshxs2N7oB
This yr has been new 4 me. Have given very few quizzes & been more skill focused along w/ projects. More practice than review
A1: I have a fluffy ball that frequently gets tossed the last few minutes of class with key questions/answers
I rewrite lessons each and every year. even teachers need to review and reflect
My main focus is history, but I say YES. Get Ss to put themselves in someone's shoes to show knowledge
. That is what I have definitely been trying to do more of this yr, Make connections to what we have studied
I know that will have great review ideas when I check in later!
My goal is my AP students come out of the AP Exam and say "that was easy - your tests were MUCH harder" :-)
A1 To determine understanding, background knowledge, help w/ applying concepts
A1 part deux: Review days are fun this yr because of the games we play. Ss actually look forward to it & it boosts confidence.
A1: Reviewing can connect concepts & skills from prior knowledge or earlier in course to new material & concepts.
Lurking on tonight. 1st time teacher and starting to prepare review for the AP Exam.
I use reflection often, but usually it focuses on process of learning/project, not necessarily content.
Ss reflecting IS reviewing and is good teaching. build it into blogging?
Definitely. It can help Ss to make the extra connections and make meaning out of it all.
Yes! But, daughter's spring soccer starts next Tuesday at the same time as . Ugh!
Working on WWII AR hist LP and EQ is based on reflection "How would your fam be impacted?"
Let me rephrase - less big review. There's always reviewing to connect regions & ideas.
. Didn't think of it that way yet definitely think reflection is form of review Been doing more of that since fall
All the time..... it's an easy way to measure results and tick off the box
I'm always looking that students can make connections from unit to unit
Hello , hello - just stopping by to wish you all a great chat
Yeah, but I was thinking about it on a more meta level. What makes review important?
A1: Some learners need time to let the new knowledge to get cold before you heat it up ... a sort of cognitive tempering
always great to see you in the feed, Stephan!
Said it before, loved Ss blogging in LA, need to include it in my geo classes
I'll need to borrow some of those games when I get to the end of the year&have no energy to start a new topic
Combine the two? have a blog count in both classes and overlap them?
I like to have students read articles about local events and connect course concepts to the article.
I like this image that Kevin paints https://t.co/sT65POfSts
A1: Some learners need time to let the new knowledge to get cold before you heat it up ... a sort of cognitive tempering
Like debriefing after activities or summarizing notes / experience / progress on a project?
A2 AP Exam Give Ss a concept framework and terms, but what Ss do with this organizer is up Ss. I suggest, but don’t demand.
Love that idea Pete! Definitely need to be more cross curricular going forward!
Love this idea- it's a great point!I had Ss write 2day 2 review the maps we saw yesterday
A2 apply the review to authentic learning experiences, if possible, & connect to previous units/concepts
A2 Unit…here are our questions and Geo terms we explored. Again suggest, but no demands.
A2 targeted questions, rubics and direct links to the specification of exam.
I build course around "Big Picture" & come back to connecting themes/enduring understandings across time/place.
For it's all about making connections and using the vocabulary
Hello Stephan - Hope all is well in Brazil!
Love,
The Crew
Just feels like LA and geo overlap so much as it is...
A2: Variety of mini-reviews along the way. Mix it up to boost confidence and cover/revisit content
A2: The review questions need to be on their level. If it is too easy or too challenging, they won’t engage
A2. Personalized tracking of concept/skill mastery for each student and an action plan for addressing gaps in understanding.
A2 Giving students a choice on how to review I think will be important. Ss review best in different ways
A1 I don't review enough. Need to model/show strategies in order for Ss to do more on their own.Reflections & connections yes.
A2: Some Ss need vocabulary first, others need to start with potential questions or problems. All Ss should try both
A2 Excellent question. Very tough to get my students to be purposeful. Games help, but sometimes feel games don't cover enough.
Pet Peeve as a student: Content on the test that was NEVER covered in class/text, etc.
A2 Review needs to be more than just trivia. Connect the ideas that you've been building to today's lesson.
Student choice. https://t.co/kv4hjXOyJb
A2 Giving students a choice on how to review I think will be important. Ss review best in different ways
A2 students need to know what is expected of them and the purpose of the review
I would also add student voice. Developing a conversation about the process of review with their ideas embedded
So so true! Put yourself in their shoes before asking the Qs!
A2 Observed a teacher in LA this year give students 3 different formats of review. Loved that & need to try in my course
A2 - for APHG exam Ss work on their lowest scoring unit first, then move on. Reviewing what they NEED
A2:
1 Student Choice
2 Student Voice
3 reconstruction of ideas + information
4 a plan
5 trust that the process works
happens when Ts use prefab textbook chapter tests. They test the book, not key concepts/skills
That's more than a pet peeve - that's just crap teaching unless it somehow extends Ss knowledge.
A2: At beginning of the year I model how to make the best of some review apps. Subtle features make more effective
AP Human concept outline is very Ss review friendly.
you have to be comfortable with chaos in the classroom, bu this works, really, really well.
It's awesome. Sometimes they make connections that I don't even see the first time!
. Looking at my own practice I agree. I loved game days & Ss did 2 yet needs to be a right fit Works great for vocab!
Yes. Big problem around here - Ts not comfortable in SS & teaching straight from text.
sorry i had to take a phone call. let me catch back up.
A2: Ss need buy-in not another worksheet full of questions to answer down the row. I like what I'm seeing about Ss choice
I make my bf take formal assessments. It's he gets too many right/wrong, I know it's too easy/hard :D
Q2 Best skill ever. Have Ss determine strengths, weaknesses, use formative assessments to pinpoint their personalized review.
I’ve added Qs just outside the content on reviews to see learned on own, but never on a test
A2: Review games/apps are the rage, but primarily for DOK level 1 rev. I use critical analysis rev prompts for class openers.
THIS!
https://t.co/Ir9ln7Rtux
Q2 Best skill ever. Have Ss determine strengths, weaknesses, use formative assessments to pinpoint their personalized review.
modeling *how* GOLD STAR https://t.co/q93x5OeTwk
A2: At beginning of the year I model how to make the best of some review apps. Subtle features make more effective
especially the new articulation. It has helped by Ss target their strengths and weaknesses as we begin reviewing.
Well said! https://t.co/sYhWmfUUSq
Q2 Best skill ever. Have Ss determine strengths, weaknesses, use formative assessments to pinpoint their personalized review.
Me too - its natural to push them, not fair to stump them.
I know this is a ? 4 later, yet there are so many gr8 tech tools & sites that could b used to DI for review
Love this! Also, having Ss share their own review styles with each other.
I like worksheets that incorporate youtube vids, primary sources, maps, etc that become part of content base
It would be amazing if some 'r blogged about all the great ways to review & shared it with us... Any takers??? :)
got to find the right balance. That only happens after you build trust and rapport
yes!!! exam coming up on May 13!! https://t.co/moyqYvsKbG
A2 - for APHG exam Ss work on their lowest scoring unit first, then move on. Reviewing what they NEED
. I hear ya Jen! I would love to hear ideas how others are hitting/reviewing those higher level thinking questions!
Worksheets have a bad reputation. It's all about what goes ON the worksheet that makes it valuable.
My thinking is that Ss can have a paper trail to review during unit
I give a formative to see which review game each student plays. 3 different leveled games, so it fits their needs
A2 I get students traffic light against spec. Green I get this, orange I need to work on this, red I need to stop and review
A3 We discuss it but few if any of my 7th graders do it. It comes out in goal planning as a strategy.
Love to see samples of this--or idea-- have Ss teams create review formats and share w/each other.
Pretty similar to my thumbs up, thumbs to the side, or thumbs down plan. Great minds. :)
1/2: Our APHG students reflect on every test, identifying concepts they struggle with. Those reflections are kept by students.
2/2 Then, when it's time to review, students know what they need to focus on.
A3: Looking for my trusty friends on this one. Need to improve.
A3: In class we review a little each day and they know where to find review activities, but I don’t make a plan for them
A3 Been trying to have Ss do more self assessments and peer assessments on targeted skills prior to summative assessments
A3 - for APHG- 6 weeks b/f exam. Have Ss ID strengths and weaknesses, then plan a 6 week at home review-20 min class time
A3: Not in classroom yet, but I assume I'll have to help. A lot of low SES Ss in my area. We had planners in jr high
I like review as practice for mastery. Different variations of review, type of activities as well as class atmosph
A3: I’m in charge of the after school program/tutoring. I do help those students develop study plans and priorities deadlines
class atmosphere is often overlooked but it is so important
I do test reflections for each test too. Ss really appreciate the breakdown
A3 I really dont know how to do this. I remind a lot for all big projects, etc., but not sure how to keep Ss honest about it.
A3 When taught HS, I discussed w them, but usually found if I didn't provide structured review activity they wouldn't do
A3 Give Ss an outline of how fast to move through material. Remind them this is a review for them and not for me
LOL I thought it was just me!!!
A3: Have students make different DOK levels of questions & then use them for review. Use some on summarize.
A3: My APUSH class is working on this now. We spent a few classes organizing materials --> Next, Ss make calendar as a class
Sadly, there are students who are planners, & there are some that just wait and wait and wait and wait and then panic!
As I monitor this chat, I'm building a Google Site for students to use for review on own time for APHG Exam.
Thank you for bringing this up!
Agreed. Many of the game reviews recall/memorization only.
I give them mini syllabus per unit... mini reviews per unit as well helps them plan- see it on paper
Since I switched jobs 3 yrs ago, I’ve been weaning my PLC off textbook tests. Almost there…
YES - some of those Apps are like the trivia games at the bar, fun, but not overly useful!
. No doubt! Jr high Ss often do need help prioritizing work. What has been most effective for you to teach this
You took the words right out of my mouth!
I think & I are lucky - our text is so old its pretty much useless!
A3 Model what reviewing looks like but more importantly, model what thinking about reviewing looks like. Make it visible
I like ones with extended time options. 2 minutes is long enough for deeper questions
BREAKING NEWS...
Ted Cruz wins Wisconsin.
Love this! I've had Students crowd source their study guides using
I like giving Ss ownership in the process. https://t.co/sd4uXlDIJ3
A3: My APUSH class is working on this now. We spent a few classes organizing materials --> Next, Ss make calendar as a class
Although...geographically speaking, old texts and old globes are great inquiry starters.
As a MAT student w/o a class, looking forward to Q4 answers from you pros ;)
A4 required to review class before test, try to do week before. practice test and then data breakdown to find weak areas
A4 Every day is an opportunity for learning and reflecting. I know I value my reflection on learning now more than in HS.
A4 I teach 3 periods per week, plus revision 1 X per lunch. We aim for 10 weeks & lunch revision since Sept.
A4: Four weeks in with sessions on Monday/Thursday/Saturday
I have one from the late 60s that I rescued from our LRC - YES - a great conversation starter!
A4. Missouri doesn't test SS at the middle school level. Don't get me started. Don't like high stakes, but ss gets ignored.
APHG exam and my district has an SLO for World Geography.
At this point all middle school teachers shed a tear because our content isnt important enough to have a high stakes test.
joining in on the chat a bit late ...
A4 Each class has a short mini review @ the end
1 thing we did well today?
1 thing we could improve?
1 big takeaway?
A4 When I dealt w/ HST, found best review was no review. Instead facilitate crit analysis skills in daily student activities
A4: Ss are given a diagnostic to see where they need focus.
You're always welcome to join at any point!
A4 We start PARCC testing tom. We also do Performance Series. Neither test social studies content yet they hit the HST skills
A4: If instruction is at or above the thinking level of the assessment, no need to do anything special.
I do too--as well as some old quality classroom maps out of the dumpster.
A4: no HST for W.Geo, but we do have a benchmark at the end of the yr - I build critical thinking skills from the start (1/2)
I'm Greg btw just got out class and I teach Geo and AP Human Geography
YES YES YES!!!
Push Ss beyond assessment expectations!
https://t.co/3xnXqQAt78
A4: If instruction is at or above the thinking level of the assessment, no need to do anything special.
Our district created a district wide common assessment but in MS, it's just not a national priority sad panda
. The focus on the skills is definitely what & I have been targeting w/ our Ss Ken
A4: Ss are writing pretty much everyday, analysis of texts & images, and discussions are key topics
A4: We reinforce the ELA tests. I used consistent vocab in discussions all year & hope they are ready for TDAs next week ekkk
Q4 1/2 - APHG 6 weeks b/f exam
1. student study plan
2. 1 class/week connecting old content w/ new
3. Sat Practice exam
What does this test look like Ashley?
A4: Started warmup reviews week b/f SB. Tests start 2 days after SB. Stop/drop/review 4 days of short classes w/SS last day.
- they use a former end of course exam that has been released by the state, or our strategist creates one
which I why Love when Ss say my test are harder
A4 What does the AP Human Geo test look like? I only took AP U.S. in H.S.
I'm sure I'll get around to watching it... eventually.
A4 2/2
4. 4 weeks b/f and after school sessions
5. 3 session to practice writing
6. 5 classes b/f exam review each day
BREAKING NEWS
Bernie Sanders has won Wisconsin.
Is it MC, short answer, or essay?
- all multiple choice with focus on dual-coded Qs ... some Ss refer to it as a "geo trivia" test
sooooo. you're saying a lot of review? surprised that you get any content in...
- yep ... how'd you guess ??? lol
A4:Part I of our high stakes test was essay in Feb. Lots of practice&review with ELA.Part II is mult. choice.Seems backwards?
Its the biggest problem with doing on Tuesday nights!
Is it more on locations and places or does it include culture?
most offered outside of class, but w/ 9th graders taking their first APHG it makes them and their parents fee better
I would agree, I wonder why they set it up like that.
Yes. Quite backwards. you'd want the base knowledge first & application 2nd I'd think. You Tennesseeans!
- locations, places, culture (religion, govt., econ.) ... id-ing architecture, important people, texts
seconded. They need the training wheels on until May 13th at 8 AM
Wow! Sounds like a lot of ground to cover to review for successfully! Yikes!
A5 Remind Ss that one score on one day in their life does not measure who they are. Life is so much more than metrics.
A5 Writing&more writing. Write about what we talked about last week. Write about how this connects to... Best review Ive done.
A4 CA used to test MS Social Studies. Not now. Review part content (key terms for each area), & lots of analysis of Q types.
- it is, so I stopped concerning myself w/ dedicating days of review & focus on teaching it well the 1st go around
A5 One game that I've still been able to use is Family Feud as it allows for multiple right answers to ?s
A5: Having students take a preassessment and then reviewing that preassessment throughout the unit is always helpful
A5 The new Quizlet Live. Ss on random teams. They know they need to study on their own to help their team.
Good answer! Good answer!
https://t.co/mUOAUP2lM9
A5 One game that I've still been able to use is Family Feud as it allows for multiple right answers to ?s
A5 When teaching APHG sometimes had Ss apply concepts in prompts thru social media exchange w/ collaborators from other places
A5: Kahoot! (the game that breaks up friendships & makes me bask in the glory of quick assessment)
A5 you can't beat ss creating questions & Mark schemes
A5 Ss just voted on Jeopardy type review game today!!! They love it
Thanks a lot, Chris. Really appreciate that.
I try to design my (hypothetical) classes with bell ringers to carry over the previous day's material
A5: for electronic tutoring
A5: GoogleDocs w/Doctopus (customize the review for different groups), having students write Qs for or
A5: Writing (typing) & peer reviewing. "How could we combine what 1 & 2 said to get a more accurate answer?" Edit together.
The 3 legged stool right Read, write, and discuss! It works!
A5: also, tourneys with round of Family Feud, Jeopardy, GeoGuessr, etc...
That's perfect - do that when it becomes reality!
sometimes simple is better https://t.co/M5vFmpcVf8
A5 Remind Ss that one score on one day in their life does not measure who they are. Life is so much more than metrics.
A5: Songs and videos - way to get them to repetitively listen to key concepts/big picture. Students/Teacher love
A5 pub style quizzes. I produce the questions & they work in teams
Having Ss collaborate is key https://t.co/Izi7UQ7X5Y
A5: Writing (typing) & peer reviewing. "How could we combine what 1 & 2 said to get a more accurate answer?" Edit together.
. Use a beach ball toss frequently at start of class to recap the lessons from the day before
That really drove writing into my head!
Ss are writing their own Kahoot Qs. Have to be so many at different DOK levels.
I’ve wanted to try that, but haven’t yet. Ran out of time last week. Did students like Quizlet Live?
- I've built it into the class culture ... Ss want to finish their work early to get in a quick round b4 we move on
Haven't tried incorporating Doctopus yet. Is it easy to use?
A5 This yr--Using visuals to summarize info.
Ex: from notes, Ss come up with x number visuals representing info. So far, +++
I know that time is limited.
Next week - South Asia with ??? moderating.
4/19 - Earth Day w/
Love this! Thanks so much! My 1st microteach sucked because I reviewed too long so this is a quick fix
Always a pleasure to learn from you tweeps at
4/26 - Letters to my 1st year Geography Teaching Self - sounds like a topic :)
Yes, yes, and yes. Also, have Ss creating their own music, rap, vids w/content.
this is a great way for Ss to make connections from topic to topic
A5: Sometimes it's OK to do DOK1 reviews. Ss love it & get competitive. I want my kids to smile in class sometimes;)
Gotta go. Glad to be back for ! Now, I just have to figure out how to get here for next 2 months during soccer practice
Dear 'rs,
What an amazing (and FAST) hour of learning and collaborating. thank you for leading the way :)
Definitely enjoyed Flocabulary's free trial period. Need to see if can get it in the budget 4 next yr!
thank you for a great (though short for me)
I believe is an Uber driver specializing in taking kids to sports & dance.
