Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Hey @LindseyOwn were your ears burning this afternoon… I was talking about you during a planning call w/ @NWAISconnect Tech conference team & @donbuckley this afternoon… I’ll be in your area on the 25-26 in case you are around :) #dtk12chat#NWAIS
Hey #DTK12chat, long time no play! I'm Ashley in SC, teacher leader of DT magnet @WHS_StudioD and a myriad of other admin duties... 2018 was memorable because I finally took a whitewater kayaking class I've been dreaming about for years!
Dan Ryder, education director of the Success & Innovation Center at Mt Blue Campus (#SICMBC) -- oh .. . most memorable moment of 2018? Reconnecting w exceptional people at #SXSWEDU#dtk12chat#lookingforwardto@sxswedu 2019!
Hi friends! Makerspace coordinator in Seattle. Ooh 2018 was full of great moments! Biking in Guilin region in China with my kids might be tops... #dtk12chat
A0: I'm a professional learning facilitator from western New York. I support student writers and the teachers who love them. My most memorable moment was my Reggio Emilia study tour. Heading back in a few weeks. #dtk12chat
Tonight I hope we can spend the time focusing on building EMPATHY for our #DTK12chat community. So my questions will not focus on #designthinking in education, we will focus on empathy building between us… #DTK12chat
Aw!!! I love it here, as you all know. And I'm awake! And not working! And no longer a hockey mom! And there is snow preventing any travel. Haha!#dtk12chat
Trevor Aleo, English teacher in the DC sprawl. Highlight of 2018 was having the opportunity to meet a whole cadre of innovation junkies at my first (but certainly not last) @TheBIF conference. It's crazy to think how many people I've met and doors have opened since! #DTK12chat
I also got a Moleskine Smart System for Christmas and plan to share my notes in my networks as I write them this time. I hope. If I can figure it all out by then. #dtk12chat
A0: Rachel here! Coordinating a local Chapter of IDEO’s Teachers Guild in NE Ohio. 2018 highlight: first trip without children (with grownup friends and family) in 9 years! #dtk12chat
ah I do love answering half a question. A 2018 highlight was getting this job! I almost ended up in the chemicals industry and I think this turned out better #dtk12chat
#DTK12chat A1 This question is harder than it should be - which is a good thing! I'm looking forward to some mostly selfish things - more yoga, more reading, more kayaking, paying off some debt (fingers crossed!) - I'm looking forward to warm weather again!
A1) argh I don’t know... obvious one would be watching a rocket liftoff carrying my husband’s microscope to the space station (July!), but realistically more excited about the dang thing being FINISHED! 😆 #dtk12chat
A1: Looking forward to family trip to Cali this summer: Yosemite, SF, Disneyland & San Diego; on teacher side looking forward to fresh possibilities in a possible job shift #dtk12chat
A1: We are new empty nesters, and I am savoring every moment of free time. New hobbies, more travel, and time with my husband and friends. Also: time for professional learning and planning. I am looking forward to all of this. #dtk12chat
A1 I'm looking forward to the first year of @JanetMillsforME as Gov in Maine; it may not seem like a big deal to others, but for educators in Maine this is epic to have someone who values educators in the Blaine House #dtk12chat#beentoolong
A1) argh I don’t know... obvious one would be watching a rocket liftoff carrying my husband’s microscope to the space station (July!), but realistically more excited about the dang thing being FINISHED! 😆 #dtk12chat
A1. getting into classrooms more. being in a nonprofit I don't teach a "normal" class, and we have some stuff in the works (forensic science based escape room, hopefully!) #dtk12chat
I started kayaking last year! I thought I would be terrified, but I loved it. Of course I was in the Erie Canal and not an ocean, but hey! It's a start. :) #dtk12chat
I was hesitating because I realize I was trying to think of work-related things because I always feel like that's what I should be doing, but all the things I thought of first were just me stuff... looks like I'm not alone though ;-) #dtk12chat
A1: 2018 was the "Year of the Zealous Amateur" for me. I feel like I learned SO. FREAKING. MUCH. about new, innovative ways people were teaching. I want 2019 to be the "Year of the Journeyman" where I better fleshing out and implement ideas I've picked up in 2018. #DTK12chat
that sounds SWEET! I'm in a rural regional public high school; we have loads of opportunities for students but would love to make more like THAT happen #dtk12chat
This is AWESOME, Ashley. I recently heard someone say “you can’t have self-care without being selfish. It’s impossible.” So looking forward to those things is absolutely right for you! #dtk12chat
That's so cool! Open water in my book - I'm mostly on rivers and the occasional lake when I want to practice a certain move and I'm too scared lol - can't wait to get back out there in the spring and see if I remember how to roll! #dtk12chat
I anticipated feeling pretty lonely and sad and old. And uh....that didn't happen. It feels liberating. Exciting. And I'm far less stressed out. My kids are happy. I get to take care of me and date my husband again.I feel a lot like we did when we were a young couple. #dtk12chat
Very long story short, my goal is to A) Use concept based teaching & #learningtransfer to help Ss understand the world and then #designthinking to change it. 2k18 has been about digging in to those two dense topics and figuring out how I can synthesize/implement them #DTK12chat
Which self care practices are most satisfying for you, James? A friend shared what made her happiest in 2018 today--all self care approaches. It was inspiring. She had great ideas. Curious about you, too. #dtk12chat
Probably the closest thing to followable is the twitter feed... @ProjectVoxa. But we don’t post to it a ton... just when big giant things happen! #dtk12chat
She's already choosing a cabinet to give us confidence -- at least those of us that value relationships, compassion and progressive ways of looking at the future #dtk12chat
That is tremendous. I'm happy for you, Dan! For all of you. I think it's time for all of us to prepare for peace. I have hope that it is coming. It has to be. The pendulum swings. #dtk12chat
A1: continuing my pursuit of simplicity, playing more in both my personal and professional lives, practicing creativity, maybe finishing a book or two. (I have 4 small children...) #dtk12chat
@TheRealJamCam is speaking my language tonight! ;-) #dtk12chat A2 I'm looking for a side hustle (maybe waitressing, maybe delivering groceries, maybe freelance writing - any of y'all got connections?! @WickedDecent? Ha) I want to pay off debt but try some new skills!
A2. half personal/half work, I'm going to take my video production to the next level in 2019. Making decent videos for #dualschool, but I want it to be over the top and get Ss doing the same thing #dtk12chat
I love your descriptors, Trevor. Which ideas are you most excited about testing? I'm also wondering where you did your best learning, in your opinion. #dtk12chat
I did think of that but kind of forgot it again... I need to make some moves and see if any of the local groups can use me - you're so smart! #dtk12chat
Memorable moments of 2018? Son was elected president of his class. First time my daughter drove the car. Published essay in the Atlantic. Watch my wife mobilize the community to get a special question on the ballot. Helluva year, #dtk12chat
A2: Currently working on my first ever @ncte proposal, applying to grad school, & planning a surprise engagement party for my soon to be fiance. Each of these will lead to life changing experiences in very different ways, but one things for sure: 2k19 is starting BIG. #DTK12chat
Actually I taught English in China for a month 2 summers ago and LOVED it! Really loved it! But I've heard mixed reviews about the online gig - maybe I ought to just try though, no harm no foul for trying #dtk12chat

A2: I'm trying to document the unexpected in my personal and professional life each day. It's been an adventure. I am learning a great deal that I didn't expect to. It's interesting. Keeps me wanting to notice more. #dtk12chat
Cell phone--photo, video, and the @1SecondEveryday app. Very cool. I hope to have two 365 videos by the end of the year: One personal, one professional. Fingers crossed. #dtk12chat
A3 Got the working draft of the new book submitted to whomever it needs to be submitted; and secured funding to keep the #SICMBC going in perpetuity #dtk12chat
I'm pretty passionate about pedagogical documentation, but so often, we focus on tight learning targets and produce findings others already shared. I want to notice the unexpected...what's happening outside of my direct line of vision...and think about that. #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat A3 Hopefully by NYE 2019 I finally achieved some semblance of peace regarding my career and the direction I'm heading and what I want and I also calmly accepted the fact that everything would change and upheave all over again despite this ;-)
A2: continue to do a daily #creativitychallenge exercise. Intentionally spending a few minutes every day “practicing” creativity, either alone, with my family, or colleagues. This small practice has made a world of difference in my life already. #DTK12chat
I just watched episode 3 of Season 2 today and LOVED all the cloying & all the fantasia; I read somewhere it all feels choreographed and IT IS! And I think that's part of its charm & genius -- the messiness under the choreographed technicolor of its time #dtk12chat
You should do this Dan. It's felt like gratitude practice in some ways. It's truly making me notice and fueling curiosity and interest and waking me up. #dtk12chat
Emily N. says the premise of MMS is "so far up my alley it was practically chopping onions in my kitchen." This is extremely wonderful. Put THAT on a plate! #dtk12chat

#dtk12chat Paula in San Diego jumping in on A3) 12/31/19: Students & colleagues I've worked with have realized their unique value to our community & beyond, parents trust the educational process to provide the opportunity for their child to realize his/her potential.
I love that- i was thinking of acts of gratitude beyond listing things you’re grateful for, n the surprises sound like a great way to push beyond obvious n find delight! #dtk12chat
A3: This year, I was able to think, plan, and act slowly and with intention. I did not multi-task too often, and I'm feeling richly rewarded by 2019 as a result. #dtk12chat
I am a talker! Ha - I think I would rock as an Uber driver, but I'm scared to take the plunge - sitting in my car alone and waiting might make me crazier lol #dtk12chat

I should. I'm starting with trying to read before bed every night -- a few comic books, a chapter or two of a novel, something to change up the mental rhythms #dtk12chat
Q4 Back to Jan 9, What are you currently reading or plan to read? Provide a quick summary and/or why you are reading it or plan to read it? Would you recommend this reading? #DTK12chat

A2 Reading fiction. #dtk12chat Strange that a lifetime English major like me had been off fiction for a long time. Started with Hardy. Moved onto Chekhov. I think George Eliot is next.
A2: I avoided answering this because I feel like I have no personal projects, or my prof life is too tied to personal life; maybe goal should be to come up with personal goal #dtk12chat
Currently reading Why We Sleep - interesting, and we all should get offline and go to bed, btw ... Planning to read plenty of others, including just about anything @mosspike reads #dtk12chat

A4. I am planning to take my time to better digest the reading for my book club. I tend to wait until a week before and try to power through #dtk12chat
A4: I just told @WickedDecent I read @ANNELAMOTT 's Notes on Hope. Highly recommended. Poignant perspectives, and I was hungry for more of her thoughts on writing (also a fan of Bird by Bird). She provided. Gorgeous. #dtk12chat
A3: would have survived teaching elem sci methods as adjunct spring semester; successfully transitioned back to middle school w/o loosing my mind or regretting decision & getting gr 6-8 to embrace #DT and remember their creative roots #dtk12chat
Yesssssss. That chapter of my life where I am running around trying to do fifty things at once and take care of everyone at once has closed, and I am adapting faster than I thought I would. #dtk12chat
A4) man oh man oh man... Both Americanah by @NgoziChimamanda and Trail of Lightning by @RoanhorseBex over break. I read more this year than in a long time... The Fifth Season, The Power, Homegoing, The Underground Railroad (Colson Whitehead), Poet X. 2019 list is long!

If you're not bothered by it, don't be embarrassed at all! I went hard for a few years and loved it and had great job success - but I got tired and bored and not having personal stuff started making me bitter - that's when I knew I had to swing back the other way a bit #dtk12chat
A4: Reading “Dare to Lead,” Brene Brown. Helping me recognize the leadership mistakes I’ve made along the way & how I actually CAN learn to be braver in my personal & professional journey. Also wanna read one of my daughter’s fave books - Warriors series. #dtk12chat
#DTK12chat Q5) Podcasts: Pop Culture Happy Hour & How I Made This. Performance on Audible: Patti Smith at Minetta Lane. Documentary: Rumble: Indians Who rocked the World @TeachRock; and of course, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!🤘🏽
a6 I'm definitely #ISTE19#SXSWEDU bound this year w my sights set on my first #NCTE as well; and of course, my other fave experience is @TheBIF#BIFSummit this fall; all help me grow, but more importantly provide opportunities for my students & our campus #dtk12chat
A5: Listening to the Peak Human Podcast. Getting healthier was last year's promise to myself, and I fulfilled it. Still a ways to go, though. That podcast helps. #dtk12chat
I feel like I work crazy hard Sept - June; then crash hard & focus on family, trips and nature. So maybe goal is to really cut off work in summer and really focus on family #dtk12chat
A4 Am reading "The Ethics of Fiction," a difficult and thoughtful book I haven't cracked since grad school. #dtk12chat J. Hillis Miller's text is #boomshakalaka, @WickedDecent.
A6. I'm looking forward to hosting more PD this year (only have 1 planned so far but more hopefully on the way). Always learn a lot when we dig into application and stress testing material #dtk12chat
A6) We’re doing our teacher workshop at @EvergreenBIGLab again this year, and it looks like we WON’T overlap with #iste19 this time! 😁 Facilitating PD is the best PD.
#dtk12chat
A4: After reading some professional development books on #learningtransfer and #CBCI, I'm trying to return to "The Good Life of Teaching: An Ethics of Professional Practice." It's my personal Ulysses-esque challenge. Some great nuggets, but hurts my brain. #DTK12chat
A5 listening to The BackStory Podcast with Colby Colb, it details the back story of a number of hiphop artist; SideHustleSchool, Don't Keep Your Day Job and Oprah's Master Class #DTK12chat
Love your honesty, @GHSTEAMchic! Maybe one huge personal goal doesn’t make sense...maybe it’s something smaller...like getting out in nature for 5 mins. daily. Something attainable in the craziness of your school year! #dtk12chat

I feel like now would be a good time to mention that another 2019 goal is to re-engage with #dtk12chat! I got lazy bc I began thinking of it as more work after I got off work, but y'all have definitely reminded me the best part about it - the people, the connections!! #mytribe
Q7 Do you feel your responses to Q4, Q5, and Q6 will help you get closer to completing Q1, Q2 or Q3? Why or Why Not? Please feel free to go DEEP! #DTK12chat
A4 Currently reading THERE THERE by @thommyorange and completely absorbed; found it on our local library new arrivals shelf -- just wanted something new & have to admit Oakland CA keeps coming up for me (watching @BlindspottingMv as we chat) #dtk12chat
Q4 Back to Jan 9, What are you currently reading or plan to read? Provide a quick summary and/or why you are reading it or plan to read it? Would you recommend this reading? #DTK12chat
ASomething: What better place to ask a design ? I've been struggling with than #DTK12chat!? I want to start recording my experiences via a blog, but every title, website template, and header image I create fails to satisfy and it's preventing me from starting. Advice or help?
