#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
Hey #5thchat#PLNedchat#ChampforKids#ShiftThis - so sad to be missing out tonight, but I’ve been feeling pretty rough today & I think some additional sleep is just what I need. I hope you all have the happiest of holidays & I’ll see y’all in 2019!
Hello #5thchat.
Melissa, MS Science Teacher from NY glad to be joining you tonight.
My favorite holiday tradition is my husband and I (and our dog) going to Lights on the Lake on Xmas Eve. We bring snacks to eat in the car as we drive through the lights display.
I'm Paul Solarz, a 4th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois. #5thchat
Favorite tradition at this time is getting together with extended family for a delicious Christmas Eve dinner, setting out candles in milk containers on the sidewalk & watching the kids open gifts!

I am grateful for my decision to focus on learning not "grades". I am happier, and so are my students. We spend out time practicing, reflecting, and collaborating. The grades come, but they are not my focus.
A1 - I love how my 4th graders took on all of the responsibilities in the classroom immediately upon empowering them to do so! I thought there would be a learning curve, but they seemed to get it right away! #5thchat
A1: Thankful that I can be myself. Thankful that I read #tlap this summer. Thankful for the group of ss I have this year. It's been a struggle, but they give me so much grace. I truly cannot see myself doing anything else in my life. #5thchat
A1: Got to share my heart with our Drama team this afternoon about their tireless dedication to pursue the vision we cast for them. 140+ passionate middle schoolers...true heroes of mine. #5thchat
A2 #5thchat
I will continue to create learning opportunities in the classroom, and not worry about how many "grades" I have. I also want to focus on giving more purposeful feedback to Ss.
A2 Today I created this graphic as I was reflecting on how soon 2019 will be here. Often our #OneWord2019 is built upon what we are grateful for. #5thChat
A2: Grateful for our 8th Grade Leaders. We have 5 mos left w/some of the most talented, caring, and selfless humans at @Simmonsknights1. We cannot count down the days until graduation; we must make every interaction count. Excited to start from scratch again...Thursday. #5thchat
#5thchat Hi Melissa, to recieve negativity and appreciate the feedback thoughtfully and turn it around in everyone's favor, the most difficult thing to learn.
A3. I learned that life is a journey so we should relish every step of the way.
I have learned far more when working through challenging times than when life seemed easy. #5thChat
A3: I’ve learned that those bumps are not the end of the world but actually growing opportunity! It’s hard in the moment some times but it’s definitely important to allow the bumps to help you grow #5thchat

It has been a rough road as the coteaching team this year. Our SPED T is out on med leave right, and we have different subs filling in. We try to fill in the gaps as best we can, and it has shown us how essential a complete team is to support Ss.
A3: Tried to start too many things new all at one time. Advanced only a few steps forward instead of being much further ahead. Had to reassess vision and move forward accordingly. #5thchat
A3: Sooooo I haven't walked in 13 weeks and this has been the hardest rehab I have done in my life. After 12 shoulder surgeries and a hip surgery, my spirit gets down about 1:00. Thankfully, I live my life like 50 first dates and bounce right back up the next am!!! #5thchat
Yes I have seen what can happen when hiring decisions were made hastily. Hiring the right staff I have heard is essential and difficult to manage all at the same time #5thchat
Yes there are lots of sayings out there about the fact that if it was easy, then you didn't grow or learn anything. An easy life is an unfulfilled life. #5thchat
I have totally been guilty of the same thing! I tried to do too many new edtech tools at once this year. I had a to take a couple steps back and remeber the learning curve #5thchat

As I continue to integrate NGSS practices into my instruction, I feel like I am failing at some practices and succeeding at others. I need to keep doing more to push my own skill set this year to be better for my Ss.
A4: Taking "manageable-sized bites". Great discussion each day in our Lab with Science teachers about how to make learning more engaging for students and teachers alike. Need to continue discussion and then move forward. Talk cannot just be talk. #5thchat
Yest that is our work as a department right now. The time for talking and planning is over for us. We have to start making an actionable plan with or without a district plan in place!

Celebrating International Dot Day was a lot of fun. The Ss really enjoyed making their dots to show off their personalities. I learned a lot about them as people. I can't wait to do it again next year.
A5: The way they all gather around my front desk with me to just talk and play with my ever increasing random objects. I can't tell you what that means to me. To have them CHOOSE to sit near me instead of the back of the room is the greatetst feeling in the whole world. #5thchat
I can't imagine doing anything else. I have a college student observing me the next couple days, and I just want her to know how awesome these kiddos are! Everyone should want to teach MS #5thchat
A6 #5thchat
We only have a week and a couple days off, so I plan to do something fun everyday. I also need to watch the #DitchSummit videos, go see the new Mary Poppins movie and hang out with my family.
A7 #5thchat
I am excited to really get into using BrainPOP in my classroom now that I am a Certified Educator. I learned so many cool things that I want to share with my Ss.
A8 #5thchat
one of my students gave me a beautiful handmade card and a butterfly necklace, which is one of my favorite things. She reminded me of myself at that age, very unsure of herself and not confident.
A5: Anything that tells me they think about me outside of school. Usually something homemade or sparkly pink. Got a few today. I'll post them later when I am on my phone! Something that is picked out just for me...#5thchat
Thanks to everyone who participated in this evening's #5thchat! Thanks especially to @MrsAsztalos for moderating a wonderful chat - I'm truly grateful! :)
#5thchat will be taking Christmas Day & New Year's Day off, so we'll be back on 1/8/19 (Moderator Needed!).
Happy Holidays!
