Hello! Lesa Haney, Austin, TX. The leader who made the most impact on my career was my first principal. She was always present in classrooms, focused on building relationship with staff/students/families, was willing to pitch in, and was a great listener. #3rdchat
Angela 3rd -CA...I have to agree with @lesahaney : My first principal was amazing...She was very much in tune with the staff and their different roles. #3rdchat

Hello #3rdchat! I'm Sara Kiffe from Missoula, MT. There are so many fantastic educators that I look up to. I wanted to become a teacher because of my 7th grade English teacher Ms. Pagel.

A1: Leaders have many characteristics, but let's talk about strong leaders. They are in tune, inspirational, encouraging, supporting, clear, great communicators. #3rdchat
One of the biggest lessons I learned as a literacy coach was to ask more questions than I answered. It’s driving my student teacher nuts (in a good way). #3rdchat
A1: Leadership is a balance between directing the program and making the cast the stars of the show! Leaders need compassion to understand others and confidence to make decisions that move the program forward! #3rdchat
A2 Leaders model behaviors and set expectations. We create the culture of our schools by the way we interact with each other and the actions we take each day. Building a culture is about you - what are you doing to promote a positive culture. #3rdchat

#3rdchat A2: In my 24 years in public schools, I’ve worked for many different leaders. Each one impacted the culture. The best were positive leaders, looking to lift the staff up by celebrating successes and efforts to improve rather than find every fault.
A1: Direction: They are the compass but let others draw the map. Empathy: Because it is a people business. Encouraging: They promote others and allow them to shine. #3rdchat
Q1: Teachers have various levels of school leadership qualities. Some are learned and some are part of their personality. What are the characteristics of a leader? #3rdchat
A2: Anyone under leadership has felt these effects. If they are a tyrant, demanding...people lose drive, feel defeated. If they have what we said in A1, we will thrive, share, encourage each other, feel safe to step from comfort. #3rdchat
A2: School leaders improve teaching and learning most powerfully through their influence on staff motivation, commitment, and working conditions. When leaders model the vision and celebrate small wins, it helps inspire and #3rdchat
With serving in church and other leadership areas I've noticed if you aren't willing to serve those you lead you likely aren't ready to lead them either. #3rdchat
Jumping in late. A1 Leaders are like shepherds (big thing in my board) Shepherds guide without pushing and support without being overbearing. Being able to inspire improvement & recognize current skill set/ contributions is also a desirable trait of a leader. #3rdchat
I also need those boundaries and clear expectations. They can't be everyone's friend. I also want them to lead me. WillyNilly can get scary. You lose organization and focus. #3rdchat
With serving in church and other leadership areas I've noticed if you aren't willing to serve those you lead you likely aren't ready to lead them either. #3rdchat
A2: Leaders need to model how they want students, teachers, parents, and community members to feel when they enter our school. If a leader is innovative and interactive, the staff will follow. #3rdchat
It makes you think what are you doing everyday to be a leader. What steps are you taking big or small towards the goal. It can be as small as smiling and saying hi to everyone in the morning! Everything counts! #3rdchat
Q3: An excellent leader understands the “why” behind their teaching and leadership roles. What is your “why”? How do others see it in your leadership? #3rdchat
A2: Lack of leadership can derail even the best of intentions while having those willing to take the lead can mean innovation and success for all parties #3rdchat

A2: Leadership can make our break the morale of a school. Leadership should lead with passion, excitement and be aware and thoughtful how to get others on board with the plan. #3rdchat
A3: My why is I love being a pioneer. I want to step out, try and find what works. I love to share what I learn, coach/support if others want to join the journey. #3rdchat
#3rdchat A3: My why? Because I love being in the company of children - curious, crazy, wonderful, exasperating children. I never cease to be amazed by how lucky I am to be able to help them grow as people. I’m super nerdy about literacy, and everyone knows it.
A2 adult Leadership has a huge impact on school culture. Any attitude is contagious. As teachers it’s advantageous to the whole school to pass around attitudes and messages worth spreading. #3rdchat
A3: My "why" is to make the world a better place by preparing my Ss for the world they are in and will be in. Others see it in my leadership by taking extra time for Ss, communicating w/ Ps, learning from my Master's program and from you all on Twitter! #3rdchat#cuiedtech
Love it. I noticed you were my inspired by one of my literacy heroes. @EllinKeene Mosaic of Thought was the best thing for me as a teacher EVER #3rdchat

#3rdchat As a teacher leader in my district (former coach, current host of classroom labs, participant on many committees), I think others see my passion for literacy and that I am truly committed to honoring kids’ choices and voices. They know I walk the walk.
A3: Why - I want teachers to be good at what they do and have successful classrooms. Everyone needs a cheerleader to get them through the new curriculum and changes of education. #3rdchat

Q3: An excellent leader understands the “why” behind their teaching and leadership roles. What is your “why”? How do others see it in your leadership? #3rdchat
A4: Me being in this #3rdchat is challenging myself! I joined Twitter this year, thanks to my master's program. I am loving being a more dedicated learner again. #cuiedtech
#3rdchat A4: I seek out opportunities to grow as an educator. I also try to find new voices so that I’m not immersed in an echo chamber. I read journals like EdLeadership and keep up with the research in my field. I participate in chats such as this.
Q4: Leaders must strive for excellence and challenge themselves to grow in leadership qualities. How do you challenge yourself to grow as a leader? #3rdchat
A4: I challenge myself by learning more. I joined twitter and this PLN chat to learn from others. Participating in conversations are challenging because it causes me to reflect. #3rdchat
Good for you! #3rdchat helps me reignite my spark all the time. Thrilled for you as you work on your master's! That will feel so good to have that finished!
A4: Twitter has been a game changer for me. Learning and growing from my #PLN I am so inspired by teachers at my school #BHsailors and others around the world. #3rdchat
#3rdchat A4: Mentoring new teachers and hosting pre-service teachers also helps me to grow because I have to constantly reflect on my own practice and be transparent in my thinking.
A4 I try to take the lead in things that make me uncomfortable - push my boundaries. I try to take risks and always be willing to learn new things. I remind myself daily to take the time to really listen. I can get frustrated with road blocks. #3rdchat
Q5: Great teachers are great leaders. They embrace change with positivity and inspire others. How do you adapt to change and inspire others in your building/district? #3rdchat
Or to feel like you have to be doing everything new and exciting... have to remind myself to pick what works and go with that... can add other things later #3rdchat
A4: I've challenged myself as an educator in many ways this year. I joined Twitter and ed chats, I started a blog, and I've been pushing myself to say yes to more opportunities. #3rdchat
A3 My why is not only a ❤️ of working with children, but a love for lifelong learning 2. I am also hooked on taking a project where the children inspire US to take it. This has been a learned skill for me but has made my lessons meaningful for everyone. #3rdchat
A4: I want to try to take more initiative in planning fun (read: not textbook) activities. Also, Twitter chats have helped give me more ideas to implement #3rdchat
I mentor 2 Ts for our district's Teacher Induction program and I have to remind them sometimes the same thing. Instead of comparing yourself ask "What can I learn from this person?" #3rdchat
A5: To adapt to change and inspire that mindset I try to be honest, see the good in the change, and try things out before I jump to conclusions. #3rdchat
Yes... I don't usually get to the #ShiftThis chat and the book is on my waiting list... haven't gotten to reading as much with the year being what it has... #3rdchat
A5: Being flexible is key. And then not showing frustration, confusion, annoyance when things change but embracing it and going with it. And if we as Ts can do this, it will benefit the Ss #3rdchat
Q5: Great teachers are great leaders. They embrace change with positivity and inspire others. How do you adapt to change and inspire others in your building/district? #3rdchat
A4 I have worked extensively on being flexible w/ my plans & allowing student input 2 shape them. For example: Sharing what Christmas means 2 us w/ our buddy class in India. This turned into making music videos w/ groups recording Christian carols on @Seesaw#3rdchat
Q6: In our classrooms, we look for potential student leaders and equip them to develop leadership skills. How do you partner with students to assist them in putting their leadership skills into practice? #3rdchat
A5: Usually change is exciting. If it is going to be better for kids, I embrace it with positive attitude. I truly love to learn. Sometimes change isn't what we want though...and it isn't best for kids. As a leader, how do you handle that? #3rdchat
Yes, we must be willing to follow the students lead. I can get frustrated with others wanting to know weeks in advance what we will be doing in my class. I don't know! It depends on what direction we decide to take and which path. #3rdchat
A6: First I make sure that each student gets a chance to try each "classroom job" or leadership/assistant role. These jobs are very S centered and it allows that inner leader to come out. #3rdchat
A6: I encourage S leadership by having class jobs that Ss choose what appeals to them. As they discover new needs for leadership I let them jump in! One less thing for me to worry about when a S can do it and probably better because they "created" it! #3rdchat
A6: Modeling those behaviors. I think having conversations and talking through things is important. Using 21st century skills but discussing what it means and how to do it. #3rdchat
A6: Having different students come up and share their answers (our math curriculum has this as a daily thing). I try to have a combo of high/low correct/incorrect answers to show that it's OK to share and also make mistakes #3rdchat
Thanks! To be honest I don’t think I would’ve connected all of those things on my own. The musical touch certainly came from the students ideas! I’m quite pleased with the way that the project went and the reaction from our buddy class. #3rdchat
A6: Help them see their qualities. Help them to use them correctly, give them opportunities to exercise it and reflect on it. Allow voice/choice. #3rdchat
A6: I encourage students to share their work, ideas, and strategies with others in the class. All my students have jobs each week that they are in charge of like putting away and charging our chromebooks, or taking care of our classroom pets. #3rdchat
A6: Growing student leaders is so important! @matscrapper, my counselor, has our 5th graders work as ambassadors—mentoring younger students and working for teachers! I’m thankful everyday for their help! #3rdchat
I have students create class jobs with what we need in the room. Right now we are updating them based on the needs of our class, we realized some jobs are not needed, then students apply. #3rdchat

A7: I love the idea of being a servant leader. This chat always reminds me of how important it is in education to help others and model leadership. #3rdchat
A7: Find ways to make an intentional impact. Many priorities driving us many different directions. Need to be more purposeful with time and energy. #3rdchat
We reevaluated our class jobs after winter break. Got rid of ones we don't use and they can choose which job they want (or not to have one) for the week. Might do an application process another year! #3rdchat
A7: I think one takeaway is definitely reflection. I’m new to third this year so it’s important to take the time to see where I’m at, where I’m going, and keep a positive attitude! #3rdchat
Students’ *** Now that I have corrected this error I can reference this chat tomorrow with my class. We have been checking our work for plurals versus possessive in our daily 5 mini lessons! How convenient. #3rdchat#reallifelearning
This has been so fun! I need to get better at managing where to see the questions, respond, and see responses, but I already feel faster! Thanks for being my first #3rdchat
