#flipclass Roy, from Bama. Flipped 4+ years. Now at district level. Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Savior to all who believe. April Fool's Day celebrates the resurrection of immature behavior. Easter wins by a mile.

Q1 #flipclass gives Ts a greater opportunity to personally participate in the learning process during class time. How does has this changed your classroom? #flipclasschat

Hello #flipclass Christi flipping Chemistry in SC for a few years
  • KtBkr4 Apr 2 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 I like being able to more of a mentor/guide, facilitating as the groups work. I help as needed but it is need to see the Ss run with what I've orchestrated for them. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1 HS and college experience have been similar. Better conversations when Ss are doing the talking, not just me. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:15 PM EDT
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
Q2 for the small but mighty group - Do you have a way to show students that the learning process (mistakes & successes) are at least as important as the grade? #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • cjcrawcooper Apr 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A1: I learn exactly where roadblocks are and can adjust (math issue vs. Chem vs. reading) #flipclass
  • CrittersMs Apr 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A1: Through interactive individual or group activities, students can better grasp concepts and ask questions when they don’t understand and as a teacher I am able to clarify points of confusion head on. #flipclass
  • bamaguy1218 Apr 2 @ 8:16 PM EDT
#flipclasschat A1: #flipclass completely changed my class. It allowed me to better know which Ss understand, to develop relationships, to do more fun things in class. The list just keeps going.
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:17 PM EDT
    Why #flipclass? Start with this...

  • HallmanCBSD Apr 2 @ 8:19 PM EDT
#flipclasschat A1 My Ss are developing Excel skills to become Excel Ninjas! Using T created videos to teach Excel and Ss use skills learned on an activity spreadsheet. This has given me time to work 1 on 1 with Ss when Qs arise during class #edim516 #flipclass #cbintegratedtech
  • SubiMajeed Apr 2 @ 8:21 PM EDT
#FlipClass Hi! This is Subi from the secMAC program, University of Michigan (wolverine4life)!! 💙〽️💛currently a teaching intern (Chemistry) at an amazing school!
  • bamaguy1218 Apr 2 @ 8:22 PM EDT
#flipclass #flipclasschat A2: No gimmicks, just make sure what you emphasize. Don't overemphasize formative grades when they are a means to overall understanding. Praise the right things. Set them up for success with what you say and emphasize.
  • cjcrawcooper Apr 2 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2: quiz retakes, and lab restarts (when possible ) maybe one I be SBD #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Welcome! We have some wonderful #flipclass chem folks to connect with.
    In reply to @SubiMajeed
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Would love SBD. I really think if you keep that idea in mind, your grading moves towards evaluating what do the students know and what do they still need to learn. #flipclass

#flipclasschat A2 Gives Ss an opportunity to synthesize information on their own and try to apply the skills. This will instill the work ethic and the intrinsic motivation within the Ss. #flipclass #edim516
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A2 I broke HS now college. Ss don't know what to think when I tell them to do the work (even after it's due) because it has value for learning, not just the grade hoop. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q3 How do you build trust with your students so they know when you offer choice or open-ended activities they can meet your expectations? #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • CrittersMs Apr 2 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A2: Most importantly allowing for quiz retakes and the ability to fix their mistakes for a better grade! #motivatethemtobecomebetter #flipclass @ErinEdgington
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A2 A parent asked about extra credit and my automatic response was to talk about opportunities to improve. (p.s. if you don't do the 'real stuff' what exactly is 'extra credit'?) #flipclass
  • SubiMajeed Apr 2 @ 8:31 PM EDT
#FlipClass A2. I am a firm believer in students learning from their mistakes. To me, Science is all about exploration & I tell my students to rethink, reroute and conclude from their findings, whether right or wrong (1/2)
    In reply to @lanier_katiesue
  • HallmanCBSD Apr 2 @ 8:32 PM EDT
#flipclasschat A3 Respect, show interest in Ss interests, set the bar high, let Ss know what you expect, have them set their own goals too. Ss should take control of their own learning. #flipclass #edim516
  • SubiMajeed Apr 2 @ 8:32 PM EDT
#FlipClass (2/2) A lot of students carry the stress of ‘oh no I did this wrong’, as their mentor you need to tell them it’s ok to be wrong as long as they learn from it.

  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Inquiry labs are my favorite. (Physics is easier and safer than chem for this one.) Watching Ss struggle than conquer is amazing. #flipclass #flipclasschat

  • bamaguy1218 Apr 2 @ 8:34 PM EDT
#flipclass #flipclasschat A3: Trust and high expectations are interesting qualities. A T can do all the right actions, but still not have the trust or the clarity of expectations. Trust is built with love and expectations are built with persistence. Easier said. Harder done.
  • CrittersMs Apr 2 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3: Building relationships with your students is the most important thing I have learned throughout my pre-student teaching experiences. Give expectations from the start to eliminate confusion, be open to new ideas, and allow questions. #flipclass @ErinEdgington
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3 Clear expectations and the flexibility to let student rework when they miss the mark has been important in building trust needed to get Ss to try. #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Q4 - getting into the home stretch - Learning is about stretching, how do you encourage students to stretch themselves and take risks with “fuzzy” challenges (outside their comfort-zone)? #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • bamaguy1218 Apr 2 @ 8:42 PM EDT
#flipclasschat A4: Model risk-taking. Praise risk-taking. Having been in many T's classrooms, some of the best are risk-takers. Just doing #flipclass is a risk. We are the best T-group to foster risk-taking Ss.
  • bamaguy1218 Apr 2 @ 8:45 PM EDT
#flipclass #flipclasschat By the way, Villanova may win tonight by 20.
  • HallmanCBSD Apr 2 @ 8:45 PM EDT
#flipclasschat A4 Ss can create their own tutorial videos on a topic. Gives Ss a chance to be creative and learn by teaching. What's better than Ss teaching Ss? #flipclass #edim516
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:49 PM EDT
Do Ts need to be comfortable with making mistakes to help Ss do the same? #flipclass
    In reply to @bamaguy1218
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Have you had good results with content being correct? I like the idea, but hesitate if others will be using them. #flipclass
    In reply to @HallmanCBSD
  • KtBkr4 Apr 2 @ 8:50 PM EDT
I like to do quick projects likeIron Chef Flash theater: students use ingredients to quickly write, stage, film a condensed version of a scene from our reading #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:52 PM EDT
What is this? I would do this right now! #flipclass
    In reply to @KtBkr4
  • bamaguy1218 Apr 2 @ 8:53 PM EDT
#flipclass #flipclasschat Hard to imagine non-risk-taking Ts successfully encouraging their Ss to be something they are not.

Q5 - we made it! Bravo! Teaching is also stretching, describe a good alternative form of assessment that is outside your comfort zone? #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:56 PM EDT
  • lanier_katiesue Apr 2 @ 8:57 PM EDT
Q5 (once again w/ graphics) Teaching is also stretching, describe a good alternative form of assessment that is outside your comfort zone? #flipclasschat #flipclass
  • bamaguy1218 Apr 2 @ 8:59 PM EDT
#flipclass #flipclasschat A5: I have had a hard time giving group assessments. That's out of my comfort zone. Though I dislike some group members carrying the group for others, it is possible for groups to advance better than individuals.
