#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Happy Tuesday everyone! Ed, 7th grade global studies teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. Excited to learn about new ideas for assessment tonight! #worldgeochat
Wahoo! Welcome welcome to #worldgeochat! Sam here from MA, 7th grade world geo teacher. I desperately need new ideas about assessments, so I am PUMPED!
A1-Choice boards! We instituted these mid-last year based on some admin feedback on student choice. I have four columns: speak, write, illustrate, and create. Students pick the assignments within those parameters. Their buy-in on assignments is much larger now! #worldgeochat
A1: Thumbs up, side or down is my favorite formative assessment. I usually have them close their eyes so they don't worry about looking different #worldgeochat
A1) Summative- I use PBL in the classroom. So we have projects as our summative assessments. One of my faves is a Colonial Shark Tank that I use with US HIstory. #worldgeochat
A1: For formative, I LOVE google forms and entrance/exit tickets. They keep things nice and quick, and you can send them out after class if you forget! For summative, my fave was a world's fair project I did in place of a final last year #worldgeochat
Q1 play doh to show contour/topo maps and key terms and landforms, balloons and sharpies to draw lines and continents on globe, Using old AP test questions sorted by subject #worldgeochat
Institute of play is really cool. I'd love to find a way to incorporate some more of their stuff in a cyber environment. Also LOVE me some quizizz! #worldgeochat

@M_Shomaker, @instituteofplay, @quizizz
A1: my favorite summatives are basically âcreate something based on these several standardsâ like a micronation starting a new society in a location of your choosing, or a new football franchise in a selected location #worldgeochat
A1: I like Kahoot or Quizizz for formative assessments to see what S's know but I love a good project to demonstrate knowledge at the end of a unit. #worldgeochat
A1: I like choice boards but also Google forms as exit tickets. If the students are being brave, they can be a guest speaker to highlight the main ideas of a lesson. #worldgeochat
A1 One of my colleagues shared this twist on a Socratic seminar today. The SPUNKI Socratic Seminar https://t.co/Q6QywZecUn I can't wait to try it! #worldgeochat
Totally! We use Worldbook at school, so my kids chose a country of their own interest and we practiced research skills. Showed them off on a @padlet for all to explore on the last day! #worldgeochat
A1 I like @edpuzzle and @Flipgrid for formatives and the kids still go nuts for @GetKahoot although they can get burned out when everyone does it day before winter break #worldgeochat
A1 my summative last few years was a #greenscreen project! Ss love it and they show off so many geography skills (and dare I say had a little fun doing it đŹ). #worldgeochat
A2) I also use @Screencastify for both kinds of assessments. Students can tell me what they know especially the ones who have writing troubles. #worldgeochat
Good idea. I give students who are different an extra special high five as well as verbal praise for going against the grain - whether they're right or wrong. #worldgeochat
A2: well I kinda gave the formative platforms I like on A1 but @edpuzzle@Flipgrid and @GetKahoot are go-toâs. For summative we are changing from google classroom to @Schoology and weâre experimenting with all their test/quiz options. #worldgeochat
A2-Old fashioned google drive tools! (Slides, Docs, etc) I create a template and tell them go! Also â€ïžâ€ïž @quizizz and am trying to up my @nearpod game. #worldgeochat
A2: Formative Assessments: Google Forms, Quizizz, Quizlet Live, Kahoot, Socrative. Summative Assessments; Choice or tic/tac/toe boards, a variety of projects including make your own test- which S's realize is not as easy as it sounds. #worldgeochat
A3: Oh gosh, please help me with this! I feel every time I try to include more student choice, students become overwhelmed which then makes me overwhelmed... #worldgeochat
I love @Screencastify and Loom. @le_reitz was showing us her students Google Tour Builder stories that they narrated using Screencastify today. They were awesome! #worldgeochat

A2: For me, I like to try to think outside of the box on this one. I like choice boards, and the travel guide writing assessments I've been using this year on googles slides (trick the Ss into writing a paragraph by making them do it on a slide! Muaha!) #worldgeochat
A3. Letting students determine how they show their understanding of the material: essay, graphic novel/comic, artwork, video, song, mind map, etc. Would love to do more of this. #worldgeochat
A3 I like asking if they want to test with a partner or alone. Especially right after a break when theyâve forgotten everything. The dialogue is so good. They think theyâre cheating but theyâre learning and leave so happy. #worldgeochat
A2 I like Schoology discussions for exit tickets. Easier to scan a digital list than a stack of papers. And I know right away who responded and who didn't. #worldgeochat
A3) I love giving student choice. I usually give a few options to students but I always give them an option of "doing whatever you can to show me you know" #worldgeochat
I have a lot of students who hate writing anything. So I give them a choice with @Screencastify. That is at least a choice. You can start small with something like that. #worldgeochat
Yeah, depending on the year, some students just want to know the way I want it done. Sometimes teaching them to take charge of their learning becomes a big part of the curriculum. #worldgeochat
And in middle school, where they don't have a lot of practice with student choice, they end up focusing more on what they'll do rather than showing me what they know #worldgeochat
A3: Oh man, I am needing to do more with choice and wanting to so bad! Choice boards are a great starter! I'm doing "Begin the journey" forms with each unit that tell me what the kisd what to learn about the world as we study it. Hoping to integrate that! #worldgeochat
A3: Choice boards or giving them the standards and allowing them to share what they learned in any manner they like to demonstrate the standard. The only issue with that is sometimes it is too wide open for some students. #worldgeochat
How do you determine who knows what when testing with a partner? I've heard other teachers mention that strategy, but never understood how it works. #worldgeochat
We do group quizzes as review -- take the 5-6 most missed questions on quizzes and have groups discuss questions, can only submit 1 answer/group #worldgeochat
That is always a hard thing to do with some kids. Some are just like "tell me what to do and I can do it." I had several the last couple of years. When I give them options they panicked. They ended up getting the hang of it eventually. It was a productive struggle #worldgeochat
A3: I teach at an online school. When completing exit tickets, I sometimes will allow the students to either participate in the discussion via text or complete a form or reflection asynchronously. #worldgeochat
A3: I usually have 3 to 4 projects to choose from in a summative assessment. I will even include a "other option" if they have a better idea. Then students write up a proposal and get it approved. #worldgeochat
I started doing this a couple years ago too James. Students still have to plan their response. I still require writing pieces some of the time to assess writing skills, yet when you aren't assessing the writing itself, this is a great choice for students. #worldgeochat

A3: Iâve done a lot of summatives where the product is the same, but students have choice in topic, especially in world geography, where we are looking at regions. #worldgeochat
One thing about formative assessment...it happens all the time. When creating these questions for the chat tonight, the WGC moderators peer reviewed questions. They helped me create better questions for you guys. #worldgeochat
A3: just did a âmenuâ for Russia with options to display understanding in different ways... OR have it be the same format/outline but different ways to do it, i.e. made up sports franchise reflecting local culture but you pick the city, uniforms, stadium, etc #worldgeochat
For me, I've just had a massive spreadsheet that chronicles the student's grades in the items. They're normally tasks they are familiar with completing, such as @nearpod items or forms #worldgeochat
I have been using @screencastify for assessments. Sometimes with projects an essay is done. For those students who don't like writing or do it slowly, talking is better. #worldgeochat
A4: I'm always really curious on how to best integrate some items into the world of online teaching. What's your best lesson idea with formative/summative, and what digital items do you use? #worldgeochat
A4 where my standards based grading people at? ESPECIALLY those doing it in a total points system for their districtâs grading. I have too many questions to put in a tweet but would love to talk about it with ya! #worldgeochat
With the choice board Sam they are assessing content standards. You create a rubric or proficiency scale for the standard. How they show that could be wide open. #worldgeochat
A4: We are focusing on differentiated assessments at school as we experiment we end up all doing the same thing: menus, choice board, activity cube. What are some different projects that demonstrate learning? #worldgeochat I need to think outside of the box more. Please help!
You can get creative with it. Kids can make their own action figures, trading cards, Funko pops, or a whole host of other things. You can DM me for other ideas. #worldgeochat
I like a gallery showing where students walk around to see exhibits and students/partners explain and then after about 15 minutes switch. That way S's can go at their own pace to see their classmates work. #worldgeochat
Last year, students did poster sessions across two days (class was divided in two). Worked really well and they seemed to enjoy sharing research and learning from others in a one-on-one or small group structure, rather than looong in-class presentations. #worldgeochat
We have both standards and points, which I know flies in the face of true SBR. We create proficiency scales for every assessment. That scale is then converted to a 10 point scale when you enter the standard into our grading system which is Infinite Campus. #worldgeochat
Thank you @teachcaudill. Needed this topic. I get overwhelmed sometimes with all there is to do every day that I drift away from some of the important things. Reminders are good. #worldgeochat
Yes!!! I still have kids map it out for me to get an idea. Nowadays I don't have to assess for writing as much as I used to so @Screencastify is perfect for a lot of things. #worldgeochat
