A1: Focus on relationships. Get to know your Ss as a person, not a # or a score. Know them. Really know them https://t.co/XliiE4RfiG
Tegan Sexton, 5th grade, Moore, Mom and teacher
A1 SO MUCH. Telling stories, building relationships w/ my kids, working on a + class and school climate.
A1 Student-driven projects. Give Ss time to explore concepts/topics that interest them & incorporate concepts learned in class.
A1: I wish we could spend more time growing Ss into people w/character & teach life skills that r vital 4 success.
A1 I wish Ts had more time to teach to their passions. 2 weeks after testing just isn't enough to get out-of-the-box.
A1: More community getting to know you time. Building relationships and trust.
Julie Bloss, Principal- Grove ECC ☀️ Hope to see many of you at CCOSA this week.
Hi - I'm ready to learn in tonight's chat!
Joy Hofmeister
State Supt.
A1 I'd love to see more of an emphasis on & with Ss!
A1: I crave more time to build relationships, know what they know. Hard to teach on day 2 if I don't know who I'm teaching on day 1.
A1: More time 1 on 1. Writing/reflecting confs are crucial but time consuming.
you asked for memes/songs you got them.
A1: differentiating instruction
A1: Projects over time. Kids presenting what they have learned. Learning outside the 4 walls of classrooms.
Yes! Would love to see more Ss reflecting on their learning! https://t.co/1M64gh9mAQ
A1: More time 1 on 1. Writing/reflecting confs are crucial but time consuming.
A1: I wish the Ss would allow more interesting, active learning. Maybe it's my shortcoming, but we can't always do things 'good' way
A1 Engaging Ss in meaningful discussion using Socartic Seminars
A1 -- getting to know Ss and their lives through the work...and valuing that TIME.
Adam Rogers OKCPS Technology Resource Coordinator.
YES! How often do we let kids (and ourselves) stop and reflect on what we've been doing? Not often enough! https://t.co/kkbBvGSZ00
A1I wish we could spend more time thinking and reflecting...as their own rewards.
A1) interest inventories & specific activities to those particular topics; more go with the flow
Jack Reed, Assistant Principal, OKCPS
Julie Collins, UCO Associate Professor of Reading, policy nerd, concerned Oklahoman and educator
A1 I want to give more opportunities to discover need for concepts - not just skill and drill https://t.co/d8iH5S5ugs
A1 more time to diagnose and differentiate.
A1) The extra enrichment stuff that adds even more but doesn't happen after the priorities are covered
A1: Bonding - I want to know my Ss better. Also, reflecting on how Ss are getting material.
Good evening! Rob Miller, Asst Supt Sand Springs. It's always time well spent when it's an chat! https://t.co/aofwp1v0rd
A1: In a perfect world we would have more time to spend 1 on 1 with our Ss
. I always wonder about Ts with the whole yr already planned. You don't even know who your kids are yet!!
A1. I wish I had more time teaching to the top students who finish early and sit there bored while I work with struggling students
Angela Little | Edmond Public School Parent | Business Analyst @ American Fidelity | Pub Ed Advocate
A1 More time spent on hands on authentic learning, presenting, creating-things I get to do in 1st but other grade aren't so lucky
A1) Next year I want to show T's how they can use the technology in their rooms better.
Jimmy Hartford math-inator. A1) developing multi-discipline lessons
A1: Not 'wish'-would: Helping students not worry about grades - take creative risks for Effective learning! https://t.co/RLO2qZea3L
A1 I wish Ts had more time to explore hands-on learning opportunities.
A1 I would love to incorporate Genius Hour!!
A1 more hands in projects that foster critical thinking and creativity.
Had a colleague who did that. Unfortunately, the kids didn't matter. The plan DID. :(
Agreed! It's always exciting to see what Ts teach during post-testing season! https://t.co/XuzPq4ZoMy
A1 I wish Ts had more time to teach to their passions. 2 weeks after testing just isn't enough to get out-of-the-box.
A1: Bethany from Arkansas...had to jump in! I wish there was more time for unstructured play. Kids need this.
A1: Time with the rest of my faculty. Team building, cross curricular planning
A1 More time to chase proverbial rabbits my kids want to chase...I can't take the time to address the things that aren't curriculum
A1) I wish for more Ss accountable talk/collaboration and Ts facilitating the learning to keep learning interesting for all.
A1 more time to allow the S's to demonstrate mastery of the instruction they have received.
A1: I wish teachers could spend more time crafting great questions and creating meaningful learning experiences to engage Ss.
A1 also time for Ss to develop rubrics to assess their own learning.
A1) Working on skills actually needed instead of what is "grade level appropriate."
A1 I wish I had more time to figure out exactly what makes each student I have learn, I'm so busy teaching I can miss some of that.
A2 I'd like to spend less time grading and test prepping. I want more authentic instruction, feedback, and reflection.
A2: It would be spectacular to NOT spend time justifying myself to my Ss in class - or competing with certain Ss for attention
working on a plan to do that this year, did it partially with adv and learned a lot hour
Agreed! Also, teaching that just because you can post, doesn't mean you should! https://t.co/NvwNssVU9N
. desperately needs to be taught. When I have HS Ss who don't know keyboard shortcuts... :P
Almost retired Supt SS Senate Democrat candidate knocking doors for better policies and people Vote smart June 28.
A2 Teaching test-taking strategies.
I had my Ss create our rubric from the assignment sheets. Great thining happened.
A2: spend less time doing "busywork" or using test prep like Buckle Down as instruction.
. LOVE student developed rubrics. Make the kids do the work :)
A2: Having students practice the fine art of multiple guessing.
Summer time and we have an awesome crowd tonight. Shows how great educators are
Boom sauce right here!! https://t.co/D3H4fRsGGQ
Jimmy Hartford math-inator. A1) developing multi-discipline lessons
A1: Sitting down with individual Ss to get to know them better and to tailor their instruction throughout the day around their needs
A2 We gained some ground this legislative session on reducing time spent on state testing! Thank you
A2: Reviewing content covered in previous grades. Ss act like they've never before heard that a noun is a person, place, or thing.
A2: I wish we didn't have to spend any time for standardized testing.
A1- less whole group and more differentiated instruction
A2: I'd like to spend less instruction time on remediation based NOT on ability or need by poor student choices.
That's because peeps rock! https://t.co/XFWcUqy2ds
Summer time and we have an awesome crowd tonight. Shows how great educators are
A2: Less time on remediation, more time on passion building off interests.
A2: Less time prepping for "The Test"
A2 less time reteaching topics/skills that my Ss should have already learned. History and life skills!
A2 Meaningless tasks that equate to test prep..and worksheets!
A2) I don't want to see T's worrying about reports and evaluations. I want to see them connect and get involved with the S's.
Working on that for this year! I've got big plans in the works! https://t.co/EFh6lGe9kr
A1 I would love to incorporate Genius Hour!!
A2: I hate feeling like a baby sitter. Class size is the biggest contributor to this feeling https://t.co/q5o9IkCdfe
Kelly Jo Myers ELA/ELL/FL
A2 We need less time getting upset when S's fail and more time supporting & adjusting what we do when they fail.
A2: Don't make/force the electives teachers to teach reading and math strategies. We already do that in our way. FOR THE LOVE!!!
A2: Less time on grading, more time on authentic feedback!
I was always amazed by the amount of time it took to take attendance and collect homework! Just crazy! https://t.co/ZpX0KRyy3c
A2) Spend less time on test preparation, test talk, and all things testing. Good teaching will proficient students.
A2: I know many Ts want state and Admin to 'let them teach'; I wish Ss would let us 'have school' instead of so much resistance
A2 We sacrifice tons of time for remediation, keeps low Ss behind need flexibility to meet Ss where they are https://t.co/01ADISDPzs
A2: I hated having to fill a quota for grades!
A2 Memorized drill and kill & making up test themed songs.
A2 Less rote memorization.
A2 I wish I could spend more time getting students ahead - reaching the top students more.
A2: testing; rushing through a things that have to be covered & less guilt if we don't get to it! https://t.co/KgPsZJuTQH
A2) Worrying about technology. Lets show our student how to use in ways that support learning! https://t.co/6GNzq6wAbk
Q2 Less time lining up, passing out papers, drudgery and waiting... grendelrick
Megan Cannon, STEM teacher!!
Maybe elective Ts need to 'educate' core Ts. In your spare time...you BET a music teacher teaches reading & math!
A2. I wish spent less time dealing with kids trauma, because I wish little kids weren't having to deal with horrible problems
Same here! I don't mind having some requirements, but 2-3 grade per week isn't always a good target. https://t.co/wCMuuDSXBn
A2: I hated having to fill a quota for grades!
A2: I don't mind helping students who try and fail, or miss for reasons, etc. No longer energy to teach each when they feel like it.
A1- I wish there was more time to allow the students to struggle through a problem and find the solution on their own
A2: Less time and focus on doing things merely for a grade. Ss have become programmed to pursue grades instead of learning.
A2 less time talking & worrying about things we can't change.
A2) Dealing with Ss dumped in my classes because "there was no where else to put them."
A2 less time balancing my schedule with testing for other classes or activities that don't get on the school calendar...Grrr!
This. All of this. https://t.co/d5kWBcNKuG
A2: Less time and focus on doing things merely for a grade. Ss have become programmed to pursue grades instead of learning.
I always tell core Ts my door is open and come check out how I reinforce those things in my own way!
A2 Spending more time teaching and less time redirecting behavior
Instead of memorizing it...let's focus on developing true researching skills. Effective Googling is a skill! https://t.co/S9j2YUVwtr
A2 The only real drudgery I feel in class in teaching grammar...I just havnt found a good way to do it!
A2 Less time lining up, passing out papers, drudgery and waiting... grendelrick
A2) Whole group lessons. I can't think of a single lesson that is right for all of my kids taught all at once.
A2 -- Less time on reformers' agenda...MORE time for MY agenda, & my Ss' agenda. Radical, I know.
A3: If they're stuck there, you're stuck there. Start class on time. Have your act together. Don't give HW b/c you waste class time.
Michael Reid Principal joining a little late.
Yes, yes, yes! Tech. shouldn't be added in b/c "we have to," but it should be blended b/c we need to!
A3: Not give them busy work! Homework does not mean I don't value S time, but pointless work (even in class) would!
A3: When Ss stay after class to talk, look them in the eyes instead of chkg email. Quit being so possessive of my time. Give freely!
Just gonna lurk tonight while working on the agenda for tomorrow's videoconference with
A3: letting Ss work @ their own pace & setting ind goals w/them. Also, ensuring class time isn't wasted on housekeeping/discipline.
I want the activities we do to be relevant and thought-provoking,not time-filling until the bell rings. https://t.co/zGPx3P551b
A2: at the college level, I think taking attendance is a complete waste of time
A3: No busy work, Ss time is as valuable as ours
this is good - system problem? Most elementary Ss love going and working for their T?
A3: Allow room in the day for students to pursue their passions
Wish we could all move to standards based grading. Some grades are so, um, arbitrary.
A3 to have a plan on where students will be guided. But give the freedom to learn from mistakes along the way.
A4) Valuing a student's time is removing all of the "stuff" that gets in the way of authentic learning. https://t.co/b0PtCDXofy
Intended to say more time allowing students to create in order to demonstrate mastery!
We should spend time teaching Metacognition!!
Be a candle lighter not a darkness fighter (Scott & Marzano)
A3 -- being a professional. Being prepared, using time (!) for authentic learning. Bell-to-bell engagement.
A3 I know they are buzzwords but lessons that are meaningful, relevant, & engaging!
A3 Respecting the fact that our kids have very full lives after they walk outside our classrooms & maximizing class time
A3) To try and make your teaching valuable to their education and not just busywork. (something I'll be working on this year)
A3 To value a Ss time is to insure that all tasks are meaningful, useful and engaging!
A2:Teaching whole group because students are individuals with different interests and paths to take.
In other words, our lessons should be relevant to their lives now, or in the future, not just for an HST. https://t.co/Haw5L8YUpd
A3: Tedious work loses engagement of Ss, especially gifted. Cover material that grasps Ss interests
https://t.co/wVdaDO9Ych
A3 Students are just as busy as we are. Meaningless work is a waste of their time & yours.
In real world, tech. isn't something that we "visit." It's used as a tool. Should be the same in
A2- Skill and Drill Worksheet-based activities used to fill time 😫
A1/a2-more projects, less direct instruction.More proactively teaching Ss to work in teams, less punishing them for not knowing how
A3: All things need to be meaningful and we should always make time for dance parties!
Lori Wathen, parent (Robin Hill School) and public education advocate
A3) The S's work needs to be relevant to what they are learning.
A3 be overly thoughtful in the activities we do with them and protective of instructional time https://t.co/ydnhQsxaph
A3 Make sure they are learning in a manner that is most effective for them. Concepts they can use in their future endeavors.
A3 2 have enough respect for your students 2 not waste their time with classroom activities that hold no true value. Challenge them.
A3: Don't give kids HW just bc you think it's the way it should be. Make it meaningful, an extension of the lesson, not added work
A3) Teach what they need to know, not what is too hard or too easy. Respect their ideas, abilities and interests.
A3 Don't bother with busy work. Always let them know the purpose of the assignment and how it can impact their learning.
A3: Love
Know what they value as authentic. Personalize the learning to make it meaningful. https://t.co/wapIV5LdtS
A3. Differentiation so every kid gets 1 year of instruction, we usually don't make sure our above grade level kids advance a year
So the Q is: how do we make people want to use it? (Applies in tech. as well as other areas!) https://t.co/oNV2Rza6RT
A3: NO BUSY WORK! Crosswords, word searches, etc with no long term value.
A3: Sometimes valuing their time means letting them suggest alt paths to accomplish goal. Come to me w/ a plan/schedule - we'll talk
A3 Took my daughter to school w/ me 1 day. She was shocked I started class ON TIME, & was prepared. Dear Lord. What did her Ts do??
A3) Their time is not wasted. Its too valuable. Lets step into their rhythm and teach ‘em up. https://t.co/hIjRlfybXV
A3: All classroom activities should be geared to what students need to learn. NO BUSY WORK!
A3 Homework should never be used as a discipline tool. Defeats our entire purpose of developing a love of learning.
A3) It means to be professional, prepare lessons for all Ss, differentiate instruction, be flexible, and teach without bias.
my own kids did standard based the past two years. ❤️ it. Feel like I know more about their strengths & weak
A3 Valuing S's time means eliminating busy work!
A3 Not valuing their time when we ask them to do more problems on a concept they already know.
A3) Show S's that school can be fun. Just like life. It is not always work work work.
I'm all about metacognition!!
A3: Never assign homework that is busy work or for completion grades. If it's not needed, don't assign for the sake of assigning!
A3: At the HS level, Ss do play sports or have after-school jobs, so we should consider the time they have for themselves.
A3. It means no busy work!
I always left the lesson as a way to think beyond, something to google, interesting. Nothing for a grade
Brings another question: what is the purpose of the homework?? Why are you “giving” it?
A3: Before any lesson/assignment ask the question of "what do students get out of this?" No busy work
A3- it's important to tie in what they're learning to real life. So they understand that we value their life and their future
A3- if we value their time, we won't force students who know it to "learn" it again. We will teach them something of value
Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
A3 -- never assign work you're not interested in grading & knowing what Ss think.
Those things important won't need to be rote memorized or googled; it will be learned through use!!!
A3: Treat them like the humans they are, understand they are citizens too... They deserve our best. https://t.co/zAXnKCIZ7O
A3 Kids come to me to be nurtured and to learn. If I'm just keeping them occupied, I've failed. https://t.co/cW1P4JB898
A3: Understanding that every minute can&should be used to further grow the individual
A3 meet them at their level instead of wasting time forcing them to ours or someone else's
A3: Ts: please stop taking roll by reading names aloud. Keep Ss engaged bell-to-bell. Provide variety. Limit time on HW & reviews.
Never tell a parent you can't challenge their kid because they already know the material! https://t.co/oWHtTZxQU3
A3. Differentiation so every kid gets 1 year of instruction, we usually don't make sure our above grade level kids advance a year
A3 Valuing S's time means creating HW designed to meet S's needs and not one size fits most
A3) meaningful, useful and engaging, this must include students rcvg Special Ed services!!!
A3 Active learning opposed to worksheets, meaningful and revel any content.
A4: What is this "seat time" you speak off? My Ss don't sit down but maybe the first 4 minutes of class. We are up in moving!
A3: Know the real reason kids are coming to school. Some don't come to learn; they come to eat, to have shelter, to be loved.
A4: if Ss can show mastery in any area, why would we want them to be required to "re-learn" it for the sake of "seat-time"
A4 If they can demonstrate mastery in half the time, why do we force them to be "in their seats" longer than necessary?
Bueller... Bueller... Bueller... https://t.co/lgx1UNHqbv
A3: Ts: please stop taking roll by reading names aloud. Keep Ss engaged bell-to-bell. Provide variety. Limit time on HW & reviews.
A4: Seat time should be = the time needed to learn the content fluently.
A4: If they know the material, they need to move on. If they are ready for college classes, offer these classes in high school.
A4 If the student knows the material, we should provide enrichment. Don't make Ss sit through what they already know.
Do T's really do that past the first few days?!?
So if we eliminate seat time we are limiting what a students can learn in a class to a minimum https://t.co/03iH6wMNRk
Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
A3: my philosophy was that if I have them work outside my class, I better be available outside my class
A4) Why not let the S's show what they have learned.
A3b: Admin must also do everything we can to free Ts from nonsense & mindless procedures. Look for ways to provide time for collab.
A4: College and career credentials require consistent attendance. We need to enforce these skills https://t.co/Pvf5MZrStp
Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
A4) Seat time is important if Ts make it important; Give Ss the motivation to be there and be lifelong learners.
A4: Seat time (eye roll). I don't even like to sit down why would I expect my Ss too. Get up! I don't care where you work, just work.
A4: Seat-time is important, too. How many jobs let you go home as soon as you finish? OTOH, make it count!
A4 It shouldn't have anything to do with seat time. We want them to learn and create not sit and be quiet.
A4 During seat time, students should be actively engaged in authentic learning that has value beyond school.
A4: This is were differentiation is crucial. If formative assessment shows mastery, Ss deserve an enriching/extending activity.
A4) It depends from Ss to Ss. Using various and creative eval tools and just getting to know your Ss will help regulate that.
A4 I'm most interested in seeing how my students can work together, collaborate, communicate, and share concepts learned.
A4-makes me wonder, if we let them work at their own pace truly, how vast would the gaps be? how do we manage it?
A4 If we are going to assign seat work, it should be worth Ss time and our own. Otherwise, why bother?
Sounds like what and I have talked about! One of the benefits of 's Student PLC https://t.co/lhU4HuP7U3
A4: if Ss can show mastery in any area, why would we want them to be required to "re-learn" it for the sake of "seat-time"
A4: Seat time has some value but is different for every student. Students learn at different rates.
I'm even a liberal in my classroom apparently. LOL!
A4) Not at all. If they can show they know it, why does it matter? That said, it takes a special kind of person to learn without it.
But many colleges let you "clep" out of courses you already know...Shouldn't we let our Ss do the same? https://t.co/bxcRZzRGqr
A4: College and career credentials require consistent attendance. We need to enforce these skills https://t.co/Pvf5MZrStp
Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
A4 -- LIFE happens, and we need flexibility in attendance laws. Common sense means we work with Ss.
Waste of time and just asking for kids to act out! https://t.co/XQBgAGl6Fj
A3: Ts: please stop taking roll by reading names aloud. Keep Ss engaged bell-to-bell. Provide variety. Limit time on HW & reviews.
A4: I accept all the "every student whenever they're ready" stuff - but there's SOME value in 'show up and play your part'
4A: Do you think real learning takes place at "seat time" are we wasting our Ss time?
A4 time in a seat seems arbitrary. However, it challenges me to have a plan for kids who do and don't master in the allotted time.
A3: To develop assignments / activities that will indeed enhance student Effective Learning!!! https://t.co/LJ0MRfd1SG
A4: Not a fan of the term "seat work" or "seat time". It could be very authentic, but needs to be renamed!
A4: Besides, seat time is yet another thing set by state, yes?
A4: Depends on the course. My geography class got messy. No need for seats a lot of times... Oh and very LOUD
I'm teaching students (people) not robots.
A4) Standards are the MINIMUM not the cap of what a student is expected to learn in your class
A4b: At , the guest speaker was from Innovations school in Utah - no wasted seat time there! https://t.co/ABHvG2J6Z3
A4) Here’s the deal - we don’t have to always do something because we have always don it. This can change. https://t.co/z82F2t0jCl
Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
A4- letting students "work at their own pace" through mastery learning often robs Ss of the "seat time" opportunity to collaborate
S's time is valuable and should be filled with engaging work not busy lets just you grade so the boss is happy!
A4: I've been uninvited to meetings b/c I insist if students get however long they need, some should graduate as 10th graders.
Yeeeessss! https://t.co/e3A7zGA0Sd
A4) Standards are the MINIMUM not the cap of what a student is expected to learn in your class
Q5 How much unstructured time (recess, lunch, etc.) should students get during the school day? https://t.co/e5Zg4RJNH3
This was hard to adjust to as a parent, but ultimately it has been more valuable.
I agree, but I believe we have a responsibility to challenge them-not sure I think they should test out. https://t.co/FtwsVJ44AH
A4: Seat time should be = the time needed to learn the content fluently.
oh my word... I tell parents "I appreciate your kid for challenging me to challenge them"
I may be as well! :) I was thinking time for independent working.
I get students need to be in class but do they really learn anything if they've already mastered the content.
I was really impressed by how the Ss owned their own learning. Ss knew exactly how many credits they had https://t.co/YCMJxn0mkZ
A4b: At , the guest speaker was from Innovations school in Utah - no wasted seat time there! https://t.co/ABHvG2J6Z3
Right Here! https://t.co/d7J6NuKzTD
A4: if Ss can show mastery in any area, why would we want them to be required to "re-learn" it for the sake of "seat-time"
A4: Taco Bueno doesn't need you to self-discover your way to the ideal burrito - they need you to show up on time and make burritos
This is tough. Our lunch times is longer than they need. The last 5-10 is when they get crazy. https://t.co/vLTP4feTFq
Q5 How much unstructured time (recess, lunch, etc.) should students get during the school day? https://t.co/e5Zg4RJNH3
Seat time w/ frequent open class discussion about any topic stimulates real learning. Ask my AP Lang class!
A5: sociologist: playtime = learning
Until history proves me wrong I'm good with being on the eventual correct side of history...
A5 Research shows they are not getting enough. More unstructured time can lead to greater learning during structured time.
A4-Ss rarely sit in my class. & to another T it might look chaotic...but it's how I love it!! & the Ss are engaged & learning!
A4: I don't know, but now I want to watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High
A5: The Middle School babies need to go outside!!!!! Let them eat some lunch and just walk around outside and take goofy SnapChats.
A4: We must teach Ss the ability to focus and work independently on tasks. At same time, this cannot be the norm in six classes/day.
Agree but shouldn't we play our part by enriching those that already know the material? https://t.co/N4lBBVLMI9
A4: I accept all the "every student whenever they're ready" stuff - but there's SOME value in 'show up and play your part'
A4 Mastery = move on, use skills in higher endeavors. Don't rehash fundamentals just to check of a box. https://t.co/CwtrQkmYVn
Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
I want the max for students so we are challenging our Ts and Ss to go beyond the standards and not work just 1080 hours
have students check their name off when they come into the room!
A5: MORE than 25 minutes I know that! At least 15 in morning, 25 for lunch, and 15 later. Recess that is. https://t.co/Ozzv5kjiIL
I completely agree that we should allow placement exams. Ss have different abilities. Attendance for new https://t.co/AB59DiTgv7
But many colleges let you "clep" out of courses you already know...Shouldn't we let our Ss do the same? https://t.co/bxcRZzRGqr
A4: College and career credentials require consistent attendance. We need to enforce these skills https://t.co/Pvf5MZrStp
Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
it made me not care about the A with my son... It's did her get it? LeSs stress on Ss
A5 I can't quantify the time at the HS level, but I agree that Ss need more time devoted to reflection & just relaxing their brains.
A5 Each child is different. Some require more unstructured time than others. More frequent breaks could be helpful to all Ss.
A5: not sure there is a magic #, but @ elementary level, lunch/recess r vital bc nutrition & physical activity stimulate learning.
"New, different work if you've already got it" is generally perceived as punishment for learning too quickly. :-)
A4 Guess it's just an early childhood thing...but seat work doesn't always equal mastery. Some kids need another option for mastery.
This comment will surely make the wrap-up blog! Bam! https://t.co/IbWUhNWDaR
A4: if Ss can show mastery in any area, why would we want them to be required to "re-learn" it for the sake of "seat-time"
A5: Different ages need different amounts, but these days we should include nap time at all ages, too!
A5: Younger students need more more time but all students even high school students need unconstructed time!
Possible I could be distracted by tonight…
Q5 More than they get. My kids need brain breaks--maybe 20 minutes btwn 2nd and 3rd hours? Long enough to grab a water and chill.
A5) According to my children they would like 1 hour to 1.5 hours.
Many times they learn to a much deeper level when we allow them to play. different at diff levels! https://t.co/HJUoYQ7F5g
A5: sociologist: playtime = learning
We are topping at 1300 hours face to face teaching hours, while Finland clocks about 700 face to face hours. this is not right!
A5 Not sure on this one. As a kid, my school had lots of unstructured time, but it was a very small school. Very manageable!
A5b: Now the pickles might not need to go outside. Make them earn that time!
A5: Kids need time for unstructured play so they have opportunities to practice social skills.
learning is chaotic and busy and loud.
A5) Unstructured time is necessary for Ss to develop. Countries, like Finland, realize the importance even for HS Ss.
Totally agree!! They need time to unwind and recharge (themselves and their phones) https://t.co/aF8o9KsHLC
A5: The Middle School babies need to go outside!!!!! Let them eat some lunch and just walk around outside and take goofy SnapChats.
A4b: As a principal, I traded spots w/ a student once a year. Sitting in a student desk all day numbs the mind more than the butt.
A5) I think that S's need time to "get the wiggles out"
A5: Good question. I teach HS and they get a 30 minute lunch and that's it. Management is such an issue.
Sure, but I think they then need to take more advanced coursework. . . Not test out and graduate at 15. https://t.co/wN01hSzWTH
I completely agree that we should allow placement exams. Ss have different abilities. Attendance for new https://t.co/AB59DiTgv7

Q4 How important should “seat time” be for how we credit students with what they’ve learned? https://t.co/amVmH0haA1
A5: As much as we can fit in the schedule. more for younger S's but 30 min to an hr a day is almost a must https://t.co/pSnMYZznpv
Q5 How much unstructured time (recess, lunch, etc.) should students get during the school day? https://t.co/e5Zg4RJNH3
What a brave thing to do!! https://t.co/pWs54Xw9ku
A4b: As a principal, I traded spots w/ a student once a year. Sitting in a student desk all day numbs the mind more than the butt.
A5) Probably more than we are giving them. Again it's a S to S situation where our relationship in knowing how they learn is vital.
time should have structure (rules&supervisors) hopefully we add how much innovation and creation time Ss get https://t.co/bUeshbxI39
Q5 How much unstructured time (recess, lunch, etc.) should students get during the school day? https://t.co/e5Zg4RJNH3
A5) as a physical education teacher I see great things in my regular classroom after activity
Q5) S's need this unstructured time, need to stop using it as a punishment
A5: My school, has only had one 20 min recess in the past. We are adding an additional 15 min in the day.
A5: Not sure the number, but def more than what we give them.
A5: I'm not sure about # of unstructured minutes. I know kids need frequent changes and physical motion in their day. Can't plant em.
T's need more time to plan/diagnose for those that already have it and those that didn't get it. https://t.co/ck9vugZPhX
"New, different work if you've already got it" is generally perceived as punishment for learning too quickly. :-)
A5 Differing amounts for differing ages, but the simple is more.
so happy that in my school's new construction they have an outdoor space right off the cafeteria!
Yes! I just need an extra 30 minutes to process all that has happened and make plans to meet S needs.
A5 Would time in a count as structured or unstructured time?
A5 I think it depends on the age. Younger kids need more time to move around than older kids.
You guys are oversimplifying the logistics of 150 individualized darlings on unrelated journies of discovery. *t
A5: Even HS Ss need to have some time to move around; take the class outside and play games, read books, act out a play, or write.
Depends on the S. W/ Chickasha's SPLC, structured/unstructured time becomes individualized! https://t.co/wtUYET7Y1o
Q5 How much unstructured time (recess, lunch, etc.) should students get during the school day? https://t.co/e5Zg4RJNH3
. What are the curricular demands? Demographics? Free ed for all? Lots of variables to draw a direct comp like that.
A5 I visited a HS in Germany several years ago--kids had 15-20 minutes between each class--and the conversations were great!
A5 Can we have structured unstructured time? No structure scares me. ;-)
We all, students & adults, need more DEAR time.
Drop
Everything
And
Reflect
via
Less is more. Less instruction time, MORE recess, activity! it has been proven to work. What are we afraid of?
It is & lets be honest, to really do this deal amazingly great is crazy hard! https://t.co/aRrULAoQfo
learning is chaotic and busy and loud.
my classes were always a dull roar of collaboration and busyness. Other Ts were uncomfortable with the non-structure
A5 Differing amounts for differing ages, but the simple answer is more.
Finns spend 1/2 day doing hands on. would impact our students, to see practical apps of their classes!
Sure! Unstructured time with rules and focus...? https://t.co/O0UmYDdjqy
A5 Can we have structured unstructured time? No structure scares me. ;-)
A5) unstructured time allows for creativeness which help critical thinking skills
A1 and A5 Heck I could use more playtime
A6: @ Elem level: If schoolwork includes reading-a lot, Special projects of S's interest-yes! "Homework"-0 time outside school.
A5 Lunch and Recess are vital to the learning process. Kids need time to think creatively, problem solve, interact, explore...
A6: Tough Q?. I think the quality of the HW is more of an issue than simply time...
Agreed. Also expectations have to be set. At my school, the time was a privilege we earned.
Definitely. We will only have 30 min of recess total this coming year, but it's more than we've had. https://t.co/FHEaCakwFa
A5 Differing amounts for differing ages, but the simple answer is more.
Agree....and more than 150 next year! https://t.co/teSPSNMnSL
You guys are oversimplifying the logistics of 150 individualized darlings on unrelated journies of discovery. *t
A5 Depends but usually significantly more than we currently allow.
A5) just like we differentiate instruction, may need to do same for unstructured time
We need to make sure homework has a purpose and a grade for the book does not pass the smell test https://t.co/nGY6WjhYvC
A6: Also depends on how well they'll use class time. If we could be more tuned in for 55 mins, much less HW involved.
A6) How much time to you spend working on work at home?
A6:Depends upon age, but as little as possible! Life is for LIVING; not hours of homework each night. https://t.co/0tJPKnLDnJ
A5) I'd love to see more unstructured time in places like natural playgrounds and outdoor classrooms.
same thoughts! I think In MS a flex period for enrichment & unstructured remediation (get help U need on what U need)
A5: It depends on the age, but 's work makes it clear that kids need movement and exercise.
I spend quite a few hours on school stuff, actually. Way more on conference prep and evaluation. https://t.co/XuejJmWi8Z
A6) How much time to you spend working on work at home?
A6 Depends on the age of the kid and the level of the class. I try to keep it under 20 minutes/night unless they have several days
A6: Enough to see school isn't a part-time hobby, but not so much they can't have a life... But those who work in class, maybe none
And there it is...NO ONE answer. Kids & grownups are different & have different needs. should be responsive https://t.co/joZjcRYEPv
A5) just like we differentiate instruction, may need to do same for unstructured time
A6) Ss should use time away from schools for family.
A6: I would rather see families focus on reading for enjoyment, playing games, conversing than doing homework.
A6: I tell my kiddos to practice for 20 minutes a day outside of class, only if they want to get better. I don't require it.
I like this idea but definitely needs teacher buy-in to be successful, otherwise turns into wasted time
Beauty of chat is that I just had a moment of tunnel vision (only seeing HS perspective) You provided additional insight!
A6. Why do kids have to do school at home at all?
A5 my class is structured, but flexible, allowing for exploration, wonder...differentiated instruction
GREAT Answer - it depends on the kid, the purpose, and reality. https://t.co/zvLXNbUpom
A6: Enough to see school isn't a part-time hobby, but not so much they can't have a life... But those who work in class, maybe none
A6: Students should not have to finish assignments because the teacher could not get the job done in the allotted class period
A6) As much or as little as they want. If they are engaged, they will take a lesson and run with it.
A5 How cool would it be to teach S's a day or 2 in class & then allow them to research/solve & then present.
A5 I'd like 50/50. Why give a WS about simple machines when you can go out on the playground and experience? https://t.co/MRJhrD3n8u
Q5 How much unstructured time (recess, lunch, etc.) should students get during the school day? https://t.co/e5Zg4RJNH3
A6: depends on discipline. Mine is often research or reading 4 later activities. I don't do worksheets much https://t.co/aebqlSXwdM
A6) Depends on what they need for mastery. Again, this takes creativity and work to figure out how that happens. Get Ss involved
A6: I always thought no more than 10 minutes per grade level (30 min. For 3rd gr)
agreed...more reflection, thinking, hands on time.
A5: Look at adult conferences. Typically have 10-15 minutes between sessions. More student choice would improve school climate.
A6: Quality not quantity. Their time out of class is just as valuable as in class.
Probably not the best profession for a comparison. LOL
A6: My Ss don't get daily HW assignments; they have ones that they plan out & turn it in before the deadline=college-ready.
lol so so much but wish it weren't that way 😭
Purposeful play can be both structured and unstructured in nature. Both allow for collaboration and learning.
If you don't think kids need breaks and movement, follow the schedule of a student for a day, perspective will enlighten you.
A6) with S's involvement in extra curricular, which are essential, how do we as educator expect very much out of class work
A6: The prob is hwk for the sake of hwk. Ss put in hrs for sports/music/etc bc they see the value. https://t.co/OhNeNV5uZY
I'm fine with it if they can then successfully go into college or career. It's a systemic problem.
A6: 1. What they didn't finish at school. 2. Study/prep for tests 3. Their choice for further mastery/going beyond what's required
A6 None at all if the homework isn't valuable.
Love, love, love GoNoodle! So do my kids!
A6 Ss need as much family/extracurricular time as possible. Especially if they’ve been working all day at school with few breaks.
A6 Not sure there is a set time limit for HW. If HW is meaningful, have it. Otherwise, what's the point?
A6: If we took out meaningless hwk, Ss might have time to read, explore, reflect, write-pursue their passions.
A6:This...if time is utilized then very little. Math, instruments, occasional projects, reading 4 pleasure https://t.co/uXjpPO9bUu
A6: Also depends on how well they'll use class time. If we could be more tuned in for 55 mins, much less HW involved.
A6 If attention span is 20 before needing a break, then no more than that per subject. And not every subject each night
A6:if assignments or projects are interesting enough students should want to spend lots of time outside of class .
Awwwww yeah! (she dropped the mic) https://t.co/xpORFS7uL1
A6 If attention span is 20 before needing a break, then no more than that per subject. And not every subject each night
A6 it depends how meaningful and engaging it is? If it's not don't waste their time!!
I learned how to whip and nae nae to
Wtih all due respect, is that what we really think they do w/ their free time? https://t.co/wprbYmkMkk
A6: If we took out meaningless hwk, Ss might have time to read, explore, reflect, write-pursue their passions.
could we Build in a short thinking/reflection time...Like a teacher's planning period?
A6: Rule of thumb: Do as much as possible during the school day, no telling what happens when you send a kid home.
YAAAASSSSS at LEAST that much... What is learned during that forced interaction is a life skill many don't have...
I know 😕 I'd love to see places that have implemented successfully and how they overcame obstacles
Some homework builds the parent teacher partnership
Know an APUSH T who didn't want to teach APUSH who gave mountains of HW...to scare kids off.
And what do we expect of our students? https://t.co/M7DuPw8Ux8
A6) How much time to you spend working on work at home?
I wish my attention span lasted 20 mins...but if it's something that I care about...I'll spend hours on it! https://t.co/V5aVzB0LA7
A6 If attention span is 20 before needing a break, then no more than that per subject. And not every subject each night
and if kids can show mastery of skill no need for hw would be ideal. Hw should be practice
We are setting limits by mandating a linear education system. https://t.co/y71BrIG5Pt
Sure, but I think they then need to take more advanced coursework. . . Not test out and graduate at 15. https://t.co/wN01hSzWTH

Awwwwww yeah! (she dropped the mic) https://t.co/i7a1fDmfRu
A6: If we took out meaningless hwk, Ss might have time to read, explore, reflect, write-pursue their passions.
A6 - If reading in prep for class the next day to make discussions meaningful and digging deeper- different than HW for sake of HW.
To be honest...if my coworkers read my answers from tonight, they'd probably think I'm a hippie 🙄
free range students and time for digging deeper, etc.
A6: Only the amount of time the student, working with the teacher, needs to support Effective Learning! https://t.co/jkEuyNUWDi
A6 Only ask that they read a book of their choosing at home. I ask them to "talk books" with me at school. https://t.co/J1Lt6FvmGY
Q6: IMO: K-6, preferably none, but no more than 15 minutes. MS - 30 min-1 hr. HS - no more than 90 minutes.
The lawmakers in Oklahoma forgot our students need to learn social skills as well.
A7: At least ask me 1st how I'd like to spend my time (planning prd/PD) before assigning it. I know my weaknesses.
A6) here is my parent answer, no more than one hour
A7: It means not wasting time with meetings that could have been emails. It means working hard to protect/create time for teachers.
A7: Don't make me go to a thing on RTI/Literacy/Teach Non-Fiction. I have cool choir things that I want to do!
You know there are still fragments of CONTENT they'll need. Sometimes learning takes up time.
A7) No meetings that could be an email; respect in the classroom; margarita gift certificates https://t.co/zMjKA99pYz
A7 Understand that I love my kids but if a parent emails me at 11:30 PM they can't expect a reply til 8 or 9 AM.
A6: There is very little research to support the effectiveness of homework assignments on kids' learning.
A7: Not give extra duties, allow time for planning/grading, make PD meaningful
A7 Don't have a meeting just to have a meeting!
A7 Many things, but basically don't ask to do homework in class-take advantage of the time you have been given.
this is true - but if they can do it already, should they sit through a lesson?
LOVE!! Anne Frank is my 'most amazing book!' I love your honesty!!
A5 Cont- invite a bit of chaos into your class. It counts as unstructured. Sometimes fails miserably, but kids always get something
A7: My Admin gets it. Meetings start/end promptly on time - shorter if possible. No paperwork just to have more paperwork.
A7: Don't use meetings for things that can be communicated via email, Remind, Voxer, etc.
A7b: Email meetings are great. And if you must have a meeting...there must be donuts.
A7. One thing is no unnecessary meetings - efficient meeting agendas.
A7 No more time consuming/mind numbing paperwork to prove that I’m teaching, that takes up my teaching/planning time.
A7) We need to develop all of our Ts, give them a voice in decisions, and help grow them as leaders.
Agreed!
Students who need it don't have supports in place to be successful anyway. https://t.co/cYumtcSYT4
A6. Why do kids have to do school at home at all?
Just talked about not givings Ss busywork.Don't give me busywork.Don't have a mtg if an email works. https://t.co/KKMro1Xdkr
Happy belated National Donut Day! https://t.co/Kx7pFggIon
A7b: Email meetings are great. And if you must have a meeting...there must be donuts.
Hey colleagues. This is Deborah joining late from Tulsa. Will catch up.
A7 For me...no test prep, standards based report card...First Grade :)
if you can email it to me, we don't need a meeting about it.
A7) T's need to know that admin is supporting them. Admin need to put less important items in email not have a meeting about it.
Need to know how to learn challenging material, don't need to sit through material they have mastered https://t.co/PzUIWqBy4F

A7 understand that I need to have a life outside of school, too...and let me use my planning period to plan and grade.
A7: Is it helpful, meaningful, can the T grow or learn from it? If not don't waste the Ts time
A7 Just like with students, it is to respect Ts enough to not waste their time with meaningless activities, meetings, etc..
Great perspective. Ss drive our instruction styles. I was relating it to the management aspect https://t.co/1oUCPBAbja
A7) Respecting that Ts have a lot on their plate. This comes in what is communicated by As to Ss being ready to learn.
A7 Effective meaningful data meetings, pd...
A5) I say at least 45 minutes by the way I do miss recess.
H.S. is not a set of 10 magic codes. Sometimes it's conversations and reading and thinking and trying.
Even better, email me the agenda, articles, & supporting resources before so I'm prepared for meeting!
Some meeting are just to get everyone together Make sure they are quick and efficient https://t.co/cv5Ti4flCh
A7. One thing is no unnecessary meetings - efficient meeting agendas.
A7: Meetings stay kid focused.
A7 Firm believer that most meetings don't need to be F2F. If you must hear yourself talk record a video.
A7 We shouldn't have meetings on things an email could accomplish. Meetings should be for learning.
A7) I'd love a recess time, please. :D
A7: Stop drowning Ts. Hire good people, train & mentor them, set high expectations, & get out of the way. https://t.co/ZkBJeee31y
That's just passive aggressive, huh? *Sigh* https://t.co/n8iPkyh3nD
sadly I know staff who still do not read their emails 😖
Yes! https://t.co/S9MDj06iA2
A7 Firm believer that most meetings don't need to be F2F. If you must hear yourself talk record a video.
they don't learn those at home?
Q7) Parents must value teachers time as they want their time valued. Equal respect
A7 respect that I spend lots of time planning. Don't throw a bunch of last minute schedule changes (that are avoidable) at me
I think the amount of homework given should depend on the age of the student. Not enough time at school to do it all.
A7 Don't have meetings just to say you had one. They need to be an efficient use of time and information.
Teacher time was my pet peeve with the whole reform movement since all the reforms ended up on her/his desk
A7: I've never been 'in trouble' for missing duty / meetings if a Student needed help or a Parent called unexpectedly.
A7: Understand that even on the weekends and during the summer months, we are still working on educational ideas to help our Ss.
A7 Celebrate what Ts know! Stop spending so much time punishing Ts for what they don't know.
we usually do before school. Tis better
I think the amount of homework given should depend on the grade of the student. Not enough time at school to do it all.
Q8 How can we reconceive professional development to better use the time of adult learners? https://t.co/BKOx7T9zxZ
A7: 1) Don't have meetings that can easily be an email 2) Use tech to create groups to collaborate virtually,
A7: Use social media and tech for personalizing learning without always meeting F2F!
A8: It’s being done already. Take a cue from other districts and states getting it right. Find what's useful, apply it to your site.
A7 T's shouldn't have to sacrifice time w/ their kids/family in order to be successful at school.
A7: always be on time for staff meetings, PLC time, and all other meetings that involve teachers.
Me too! Our brains need recharge time just like theirs.
critical if you don't wanna waste together time.
There is if you teach the essentials. Trying to cover all standards is foolish. Make better use of time at school.
Would love to be acknowledged for my PERSONAL professional development, reading, researching, networking https://t.co/Cl06aqf55H

A7: 1) Don't have meetings that can easily be an email 2) Use tech to create groups to collaborate virtually,
A3 HW should be tailored to the Ss need! Struggling Ss should work on deficits advanced Ss enrichment NO more one size fits all

A7) To not keep throwing administrative paperwork that keeps them away from actually teaching students
A7b Pay me so I don’t have to take second and third jobs to make ends meet, which makes me a less effective T.
This is what I do! My kids love to "talk books" with me as well as with each other.
have a purpose and make it count right! Nothing worse than sitting through something that could be emailed.
A7 have a purposeful agenda for any meetings and stick to it.
A8: Hash chats for State PD. Pair up schools, content areas, Ts by instruction techniques, partnerTs, etc. https://t.co/XQSeK3Bf9D

A8: If you spend time with PD, ensure it follows site goals and there is follow up through the year
A8 biggest thing is to really allow them to decide what they need and help them get it!
A8 In district, ask me what I need. Let me select what I want to do and support me in that.
Love this idea! We have this opportunity at some of our high schools in Tulsa! https://t.co/BGJkfutnDZ

A8 PD has to have follow up.Teach me, give me time to implement, then follow up.
A8) Have more conference style PDs to give choice for the different levels of Ts and utilize technology more (YouTube, etc...)
choice. Edcamp, online, conferences, etc.
The craziness that is right now. holy.cow.
Flipped professional development-yaaaassssss!!! https://t.co/gPwopqSAwJ
A7: Use social media and tech for personalizing learning without always meeting F2F!
A8 What works for Ss works for Ts. Some need F2F, others need more time. Find way to make it work for all.
A8 Ask us what we want to improve in. Surveys on what we want and need in PD are great, but then provide it.
YES! I love my second job but it makes things tough to juggle both and do them both well! https://t.co/ESC9ORkGeE
A7b Pay me so I don’t have to take second and third jobs to make ends meet, which makes me a less effective T.
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
A8 I think Ed camps have made a positive impact on meaningful PD
we spend all spring sweating out bad legislation, and often what does get through is extra crap for all.
A8: Broken recored..don'make me do reading strategies or RTI or blah blah blah. EdCamp, personalized PD. Let me talk to choir peeps.
A8 Don't set up PD like an ineffective sit and get classroom. PD should be a model for Ts to emulate in their classrooms.
A8) Focus on the Ts you have, and provide what they need to be better, not what politicians/reformers think they need.
A8 we also need to help our T's lead their own PD by helping them be self sufficient when possible! Go find it!
A8) Give the T's more options. Something like an edcamp. Let the T's show what works to other T's.
A8 -- I have always wanted to design my own PD to fit my class and my kids.
A8: Tricky, tricky! I'm curious to see what others say... I make the best of every PD session, but many don't...
A8 Twitter Chats! Ed Camp style! Meaningful ideas that can be used in the classroom!
A8 I'm passionate about this! Use tech effectively & personalize PD for each T's needs. Make PD bite-sized & available on demand
Yes! Why do we think those with 50 miles and a briefcase know more than the teacher next door? https://t.co/9izNJymJav
Ts are becoming more open to learning from down the hall Ts doesn't have to be 50 miles away to be expert https://t.co/2oWKJJhNSl
Q8 How can we reconceive professional development to better use the time of adult learners? https://t.co/BKOx7T9zxZ
although - this session there was some good stuff that made it out and was signed. Kudos for that :-)
I've suggested we do High School this way. Sign up for whatever sounds good, credit for what you complete. https://t.co/KtOCf8d5gU
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
Getting a late start! It looks like I missed some awesome convos
A8b Should I stay or should I go now...In most cases I say Go!
A8: Project based PD helping the instructor develop tools for their classroom would help respect their time and center their needs
Hey friends. Sorry I couldn't chat 2nite. I'm Louisville scoring APUSH exams. For those who paid me early, ur kids each earned a 5 😂
A8) Using available technology and strategies that can cover things better than sitting until your butt and brain are numb at once.
A8b. After attending Edcamps, I know feel comfortable leaving.
A8b-depends on if there's another 1 I am dying to attend. If not, maybe I can bring something to the table to turn the sesh around
A8b I usually stay. Don’t want to be rude and leave when speaker is talking.
Q8b Probably stay. My mother, somehow, would know if I left and tell me that she raised me better than that... ;)
Go! style all the way! Why suffer through something of no benefit to me? Time is money! https://t.co/AU6HrHbwl8
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
A8: Teachers at get an hour of PD for participating in our Sunday night chats!
A8: Keep it aligned to common mission, and seriously, seriously,FOLLOW UP and FOLLOW THROUGH. Whatever you do, do it well.
A8b) go immediately find something that is beneficial
A8: great point, don't know how many great PD I have done, put in a file, and forgotten all about 😔 https://t.co/9dgT50DHnA
A8 PD has to have follow up.Teach me, give me time to implement, then follow up.
A8: Allow the "learners" (T's) 2 B Stakeholder in the process. We know what we need... Ask us... https://t.co/mckToyNA52
Q8 How can we reconceive professional development to better use the time of adult learners? https://t.co/BKOx7T9zxZ
GREAT POINT! We have to find ways for our T's to have more time to be the T's they already know how to be https://t.co/He8qr3QkqR
A7b Pay me so I don’t have to take second and third jobs to make ends meet, which makes me a less effective T.
A8: Recognize edchats as professional learning. This encourages connected edus, which is no longer up for debate.
There are Schools/teachers doing amazing, innovative things here in Ok, need way to share best practices
A8) Support that by helping them get the funding for what they find. https://t.co/EIUGdC6zj7
A8 we also need to help our T's lead their own PD by helping them be self sufficient when possible! Go find it!
EdCamp get out of your seat and move your feet if session not working not a bad motto https://t.co/CGrhvQOvT8
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
A8b Get on and see what is doing, or get up and leave to network with other educators.
LOL! My Granny would come back from the grave and tan my hide!
A8B- Usually stay-I don't want to be rude. If it's super early, I might sneak out.
A8b) I go to find another session. I always have a backup.
Yes! I get all excited for new idea, then get busy, then forget. The PD was wasted.
A8b: I always think about that!! Try to make my teaching engaging all the time. I don't want them walk out and leave!
Agree that schooltime should be maxed. Can we stop acting like a little hw is going to steal kids childhoods though
A8: Why couldn't professional development be like a Ted Talk format or what if we had PD with community leaders?
A8b: The problem with EdCamps is that you have to have people who are willing to lead and participate... I enjoy them, but many wont
A8b Respectful walk away. I emphasize respectful because I've seen Ts who make a big scene...which is just awkward for everyone...
Q8c Would your students make the same decision about staying in or leaving your class, if they could? https://t.co/X7WXbRPHln
A8: PD should utilize the same student-centric pedagogies that we want to apply in the classroom. Build from instructors needs
A8b) Get up and go to something else. Yes, it may be uncomfortable, but missing something else could be worse.
A8b leave. life's too short for bad PD.
Always remember the goal of any session should be to add one new idea or activity not a whole new philosophy
Collaboration is still the best PD. I keep telling the SDE Federal Programs office that... https://t.co/Xz5BITshXI
A8) Modernize it-roughly 200 contributors & untold number of lurkers r currently getting some PD right now. https://t.co/Gx0tAEza3h
Q8 How can we reconceive professional development to better use the time of adult learners? https://t.co/BKOx7T9zxZ
A8: Educators learn in many diff. ways, offer PD that way, Ts must have PD to learn & grow
A8b: Do I have a crystal ball? Then no. Even years after a "lousy" PD, I run across a handout or book that is now useful.
A8B: I leave immediately. Time is more valuable than money. I would apply it towards other endeavors https://t.co/M7B91On37U
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
A8: I will get out of a PD session like I have some blind dates. Text my daughter under the table and tell her to fake sick.
A8b We shouldn't make S's sit through material they already know, we shouldn't expect T's to sit through PD they don't want/need
Yes! I wish more Ts would use a back channel. Gives even the shy Ss a voice!
Love the idea of working with community leaders. https://t.co/XkgCIodaGa
A8: Why couldn't professional development be like a Ted Talk format or what if we had PD with community leaders?
I'm excited about our 5 yr plan in moving toward more personalized PD, microcredentials, etc. https://t.co/tCnKlD1yYH
Q8 How can we reconceive professional development to better use the time of adult learners? https://t.co/BKOx7T9zxZ
Am not a big fan of most sit and get, presentation-type PD. Prefer model and hands-on, practical PD
A7 Google forms and Google docs let me get info and collaborate w Ts without calling a meeting
A8c: If you have dance parties...kids never want to leave. Just sayin!!!
A8B--unless it's dreadful, I try to find something I can learn and apply to my setting. Not what's being 'taught', maybe
Of COURSE they would all STAY! ;-) Seriously, many do comment that time flies in my room. https://t.co/loAe47y4Aw
Q8c Would your students make the same decision about staying in or leaving your class, if they could? https://t.co/X7WXbRPHln
I hate Mattos for saying that! I feel the state has done a great job of cutting the fat is behind
Now don't get me wrong, sometimes- most of the time, I forget to ask myself that question. But I try every day! 😂
A8c Good grief I hope not, but I’m sure some do at various times. Signal from them they need a brain break or lesson isn’t engaging.
A8: Grab a few subs and visit other districts for a day. Trade off, watch one another, discussion
A8 We chg strats to meet need twitter, remind,we need same for adult learners. If I need something I seek it https://t.co/Iyej661eWx
Q8 How can we reconceive professional development to better use the time of adult learners? https://t.co/BKOx7T9zxZ
A8b) Most of the time I stay because I feel sorry for the presenter & guilty for leaving. https://t.co/6t7MPHYvfK
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
A8c: This is what asks Ts in "Teach Like a Pirate.' Would Ss get up and leave if they could? Make learning exciting!
A8c) woooo. I'm gonna need to do some self reflecting...😳
It helps when they bring donuts of course! ( ) 😉🍩
A8) also still waiting on PD (parent development), was hoping for a
Be sure and join us at the CCOSA conference Thursday 2:30 "What is ". If you are not there follow the hashtag
I agree. EdCamps work for the motivated...
Q8c My students ADORE me... Yeah, whatever. Some days, they'd leave. When I teach Enlightenment, I'd leave, too!
What's homework do for a kid that doesn't have a parent who cares? Or no parent at all?
kinda like this...some need more structure. Could prolly set that up path too
To be fair, there's SOME assumption not all Ss KNOW what's "best" for them or ready to make ALL THE CHOICES...
I think homework should depend on the learning need. Not enough hours at home to do it all
I don't mind seat time as long as Ss are not staring at something they already know. Don't have systems to avoid it.
A8c: Absolutely not. They know in my room they're cared about and valued. and I always, ALWAYS HAVE FOOD! https://t.co/ZeUM2lNWRs
A8c) I teach middle school there are some not so interesting topics, they would leave if they could!
I've been looking at hybrid models...anything that gives Ts more choice is better IMO https://t.co/czFTYJOrBL
I agree. EdCamps work for the motivated...
This was my 1st year as a non-moonlighting T. i was poor but i was a better T b/c i cld focus on my profession.
A8b I would leave and find a session that would be more beneficial to me.
A8c When we read, I know some students would take off.
A8b: If Ss see no value in what's taught in the class, they would want to leave just like I would want to leave a boring meeting.
A8c: "If you have something better to do right now don't let my preparing you for a rich&abundant life stop you. Please,go"
A8c) That could be an interesting way to run a school. T's need to be on their game every day.
A8: Go. Our kids deserve edus who can maximize their own learning and know what is best for them to support their students.
So your summer goal is how to make Enlightenment more engaging https://t.co/gcG5C3Canp
Q8c My students ADORE me... Yeah, whatever. Some days, they'd leave. When I teach Enlightenment, I'd leave, too!
A8c -- Oh, man. I'd feel awful if I wasted my kids' time. I hope they knew I vauled their learning and respected them.
A8b) I try to stay but if it gets to that point, I politely leave. Me squirming and reading my phone disrespects the presenter
are different-I think some Ts can be intimidated because there is not set schedule to look at. Most enjoy it!
A8c My Ss feel free to ask questions, guide conversations...my plans change according to their needs. PD in not always like that
A8c: Those who want to learn would stay. Many would opt to go to other rooms where they could play on their cell all day.
A8 If it's fluid conf leave they'll understand.If it's fancy-schmancy, stay-societal rules and all that jazz https://t.co/vVRx7ZUOKT
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
That's what we're there for, right? To help them learn how to make those decisions?
A8c- Some days-prob. I try mix it up-short lectures, lots of mvmnt. Always aware of my teen audience! https://t.co/3u58Pzl3ol
Q8c Would your students make the same decision about staying in or leaving your class, if they could? https://t.co/X7WXbRPHln
Q6: I feel 1 1/2 hours a night is reasonable for homework/studying. I try to make any hmwk I give meaningful practice, not busywork.
A8b) If it has become a marketing session I leave. If not, I stay & challenge myself to find something I can use. Unless it's EdCamp!
I agree. But I don't think it's a sure thing. I know a few Ts who would whine just as much no matter what!
A8c) That's what we have to think about as Ts.
A8) I’m going with yes-I taught an elective math class that was not required and my classes were mostly full https://t.co/omNfi2YAbc
Q8c Would your students make the same decision about staying in or leaving your class, if they could? https://t.co/X7WXbRPHln
A8 Edcamps are great, but as a T I loved PD as long as u could show me how it fit into our goals and allowed me to make it my own
A8c) even when my lesson is mediocre, they stay bc they know I love them & they respect me. Relationships change everything.
training Ts to facilitate convos isn't difficult. Teach ways to get everyone to share=key. An edcamp how-to would help!
Ss who aren't used to choice aren't necessarily going to make the right choices at first...
Great minds. :) https://t.co/5djKWYrlMc
A8B--unless it's dreadful, I try to find something I can learn and apply to my setting. Not what's being 'taught', maybe
A8 Sometimes the title is misleading. If I see another at the same time, I probably leave. If I'm seated too close, I just stay.
A8: I compose snarky tweets & delete them before posting. I know those are not PD tweets... https://t.co/AJkY4W60hX
Q8b You pick a breakout session at a conference. It's lousy. Your time is valuable. Stay or go? Why? https://t.co/iAgi8ACGMy
A9: Should? Not much... Have to? Depends on the subject. ELA Ts have lots of writing to grade and comment on!
A9: I hate to see teachers spend so much time outside of school grading when the most authentic feedback happens in the room w kids.
I'll give Ss the option to walk if I can do the same - and under 'no zeros' policy I'll come back and teach when I'm ready
A9 Depends on subjects being planned for, experience of T in subj, and assignments/projects being graded.
If I have created an engaging way to teach the subject, they would stay.
A9 -- IF I'm engaging kids & using class to teach, all grading happens outside class. . Is it right? Dunno.
A9 just like HW, depends on the class. I'm going to have 160 AP students...so 160 essays to score. It has to be done...so I will
A9- As little as possible. Martyrs don't make the best educators. Use your time effectively at school! https://t.co/9sGJ3wiote
Q1: I wish I had more time for guided writing practice, 1 on 1 conferences, and peer collaboration.
I'm with you 100%. I don't go to PD to hear a sales pitch. We're broke, you know. https://t.co/Hh4MCAY2Xu
A8b) If it has become a marketing session I leave. If not, I stay & challenge myself to find something I can use. Unless it's EdCamp!
already know or we refuse to teach like they learn = leave. If they would leave shouldn't we adjust? https://t.co/e8aznG5TNv
A8c: Those who want to learn would stay. Many would opt to go to other rooms where they could play on their cell all day.
A9:As much as that T wants. It's in seasons too. I used to stay @ school for hours. Now I have a sweet baby I rush home to!
EXACTLY! https://t.co/iOfeuYTpaX
A9: I hate to see teachers spend so much time outside of school grading when the most authentic feedback happens in the room w kids.
man - my friend and I used to all kinds of chatting!
A9 The amount of time usually has a direct correlation to the success of the Ss. If T is 8-3 Ss success is minimal
A9) how much time do I want to spend or how much do I spend to be prepared???
Q9: Varies w/ subject and purpose. AP teachers know what they've signed up for, but many find trade off worth it...
I love hearing "I can actually USE this!" :)
A9- I save the stuff I like for home. Reading tech blogs, wrkng on my website-home. Research papers-that's planning period stuff ;)
A9 Ideally?None.Realistically, depends on the T. I often think if I were a bank teller, I'd be carefree instead of swamped.
A8c Most of the time yes. Then there are those days when we do the mandated have-tos. Those days suck https://t.co/oxTY7wJhm2
Q8c Would your students make the same decision about staying in or leaving your class, if they could? https://t.co/X7WXbRPHln
I think it is simply fantastic that you are leading this chat in the role of superintendent. What an example you are!
A9b I'm teaching a new grade next year, so LOTS of time outside of classroom planning & grading for me, I'm sure
A9) Whatever you feel it takes that you feel like you are ready to engage Ss and value their time and yourself
I think I read a blog about that... https://t.co/BSur2ofL4b
I try to be nice when I say uh yeah, have you been reading about , we're seriously broke but nice product... https://t.co/VMXi0f2fUc
If you are asking yourself that question you need to recheck your career choice Teaching is 36 80 weeks https://t.co/WzUBmbrSnt
A9: You said "outside of the contract" if there is a set amount of time I'm prob not meeting it. https://t.co/qT6cEGYvnm
That's a little dramatic. Agree that teachers shouldn't overdo it. But enough of this "homework is evil" business
A9) It's virtually impossible to get it done during contract hours because of all the data meetings we attend.
Q3: To value a student's time means to provide educational opportunities that connect their learning to real world scenarios.
so many conferences can turn into a boat show. Stole that from
A9: As much as you need! But you must take care of yourself and do things for yourself!
A9: this 1 is tough,I hate when TS hide behind contract hours yet does our pay reflect the above & beyond? https://t.co/ErV1j4hBbR
A9: We need to look at our grading practices if we are spending tons of time outside of school on that.
A9 I would lean heavy on the plan and lighter on the grading.
Q9 I didn't know either of those two were out of the contract time. Teaching is not nor can it be an 8-3 job.
A9) The contract defines working conditions, mutually agreed, but I always did what was necessary regardless of a "contract time"
A9 Could someone please answer this for me? I've been told I spend way to much time planning...lol!
watching each other would be best. There are great Ts in - imagine being able to see each other!
A9 I'm a workaholic so yeah...prolly not a good judge
If we are doing it right we know in realtime which S's have mastered & who hasn't. Just need to adjust https://t.co/tG5AE65C0i
A4: Learning is a process. It takes time. use the classroom & its trappings to facilitate such learning https://t.co/c5fR3cXXk3
A9: I don't know how much they should work but IMO a T can't work from 8:00 to 3:00 and be effective
Oh I'm so the opposite. https://t.co/kAiYCRc57w
A9 Could someone please answer this for me? I've been told I spend way to much time planning...lol!
A9: As long as we're all excited about going "above and beyond", we'll keep getting paid "below and worse."
A9: Lovely question to ask teachers conferencing from all around the state during SUMMER!
A9: The best educators devote time sacrificially and don't keep tabs on how much time is spent, they just do it.
heehee...I'm working on that :)
catching up, great questions! If I had more $ I would hire a maid & a yard boy!! Which would equal more time https://t.co/Fu13Uc9n4X
GREAT POINT! We have to find ways for our T's to have more time to be the T's they already know how to be https://t.co/He8qr3QkqR
A7b Pay me so I don’t have to take second and third jobs to make ends meet, which makes me a less effective T.
Sad but true... https://t.co/IMgUMrUHkf
A9: As long as we're all excited about going "above and beyond", we'll keep getting paid "below and worse."
Absolutely. Corners are being cut...either in the classroom or with grading and planing. https://t.co/b7DB7vAykb
A9: I don't know how much they should work but IMO a T can't work from 8:00 to 3:00 and be effective
But would most teachers adjust???
If you do keep tabs on it, good lord you need some fun in your life! Look me up! lol https://t.co/rbkvnK0cuE
A9: The best educators devote time sacrificially and don't keep tabs on how much time is spent, they just do it.
"You suck if you're not a martyr" is why legislators can have sessions like this and figure school will be fine come August.
If you are running over parents on your way out the building, you probably need to re-evaluate your purpose/calling.
A9) None. But its not possible inside of our current system and demands. We change up models though… https://t.co/inZgzUfg7h
A9: 1/2 being a grad student & classroom T I really don't see a distinction between work & non-work me. https://t.co/BTyvCvdcuf
No kidding! Someone owes me a lot of money for all those hours coaching and grading essays late at night.
A9 If we were compensated fairly, as much time as needed. As it stands now, about hour after contract daily https://t.co/Z4j1Ie1VN9
I am no good to my students if I don't take time for me this summer. Good grief, how would I have stories to share w/them?!
A9 I'm always lesson planning. My brain works that way. When I read or see or do something, I think how can I share this?
I'd say the vast majority of the people here are workaholics. It's 8:56 on a Sunday, and we're talking shop. https://t.co/o6JgX6YpF3
A9 I'm a workaholic so yeah...prolly not a good judge
Not that I mean to stir the pot or anything. But if 1/2 are as chipper excited idealistic as you sound here, I'm going to throw up.
A9 -- I did not resent the time I graded at home...my OWN kids probably DID. Learned so much about my Ss.
I can see it now.. Students, let me tell you about that one time this summer I was writing this lesson........
I disagree with that opinion. Although I can understand the point that early grades shouldn't have any/much
Probably not as much as I should, but I love to have a big stack of prof. texts to read, and blog more. https://t.co/ThNixN3TOX
A9 However much time it takes to do the job right. Effective time management and not sending home unnecessary hw helps.
Uh, that's really a good point... Yikes! https://t.co/mmxZfMHZBl
I'd say the vast majority of the people here are workaholics. It's 8:56 on a Sunday, and we're talking shop. https://t.co/o6JgX6YpF3
A9 I'm a workaholic so yeah...prolly not a good judge
Ps tend to think of us a friends. They have to remember while we love their kids, we love our own too.
A9: 2/2 I am always reading, thinking, wondering, plotting, & planning. I don't look at a clock https://t.co/BTyvCvdcuf
Always concerns me how many Ts cars are chained to the back number of the last bus
Hey , my class & I are hosting a chat on The Leadership Challenge. Would love you to join next weekend.
Bonus: Not much. Always planning for next year or going to workshops.
I always tell myself - if I can leave with one thing - it was worth my time.
I take the time I need. But I also love being a part of amazing PD during the summer.
A bonus) I take as much as I can. Summer is for my kids and their activities
Bonus A) This summer very little.
Wow, RIck! You kept us all on task, bell-to-bell! Woohoo!!
A9)Should? None.Reality? All. Preference?Grade during, plan outside. By plan I mean experience life so I bring relevance to lessons.
BQ) I am determined to get a good week of downtime devoted to only family, otherwise a few hours per day.
A10 This year, not much. 2 weeks of student leadership camp, AP grading/week long workshop, plus BIG redesign of both my classes
BQ: Uh, let's see, 11 weeks of summer minus 3.5 weeks of PD... Shhh, don't tell my family!
BonusA: I take June off. I will slowly start working in July. I have books to read, shows to watch, and a puppy to cuddle!
How many discipline problems occur when teachers not fully prepared or sitting on their backside vs prepared engaging on their feet
I'm taking SERIOUS downtime this summer for the first time in 20+ years. Life is short; play hard. https://t.co/7nZThIn2PU
keep the faith & help them see light. Never allow yourself to do less because some choose to. You can do it! https://t.co/8H7KBxbcDh
I'm just a bit down b/c many of my coworkers really just get them min reqs and don't participate more than mandatory
Bonus: Errr. I slept in yesterday...does that count as downtime?
Bonus - About a week. A few other days here and there. The rest is working so I can afford to teach in this state.
not only talking... Enjoying it and thinking about how it will be applied to the classroom in a few months...
BQ) Not much. Even at my summer gig, selling fireworks, my Ss are on my mind and what to do better.
A: Not much this summer but all stuff I am passionate about and chose to do so I can't really complain 😉 https://t.co/zpQecz6FIE
Bonus: I have 3 weeks of PD, plus curriculum mapping, lesson planning/writing, blogging, reading professional and for fun...
BQ This summer I'm determined to spend time w/my kids, read books for fun...take part in 2or 3 twitter Ed chats, and a few workshops
Honestly, I have planned my new seating, or lack there of for this next year. That is what I have done.
My motto is that if I can't find at least 1 thing then I wasn't creative enough. :) https://t.co/XaaiW36E4W
I always tell myself - if I can leave with one thing - it was worth my time.
Bonus: Enough to keep me on top of my game. Not so much that I miss these beautiful summer evenings with my family.
Yup. How many relationships are NOT built b/c papers not returned quickly? PLANNING MATTERS! Grading matters.
A9: "downtime" is not a vocabulary word in public education. Ts always have the next question or task https://t.co/9r0IblX075
GREAT chat !! Y'all stay cool.
