#ukedchat A1 Where by students have a standard operating procedure for given tasks without having to be constantly directed. It takes time and patience to develop...Leaving lots of picture clues/prompts around the room helps my SEMH science students.
A1: the pursuit, value & engagement around the learning process by pupils-achieved by both personal drive & skills modelled to them across their education. We build it across the lifespan of their time in school in the hope they hone it across the rest of their lives #UkEdChat
Completing tasks and activities with little further direction or support form adults or peers. Having the available resources to self-select to complete and further own learning. #UKEdChat
Both are important skills - it depends on the activity, task, outcome and purpose of the learning. Sometimes independent learning needs to be encouraged, sometimes learning as a pair, group or class will develop social skills and awareness. #UKEdChat
A1. Students being given time and space to practise the skills they’ve been developing. Where the process is much more important that the outcome #ukedchat
A2: any opportunity to embed independence should be embraced IMO. One of the most common things I see pastorally amongst pupils who are labelled as ‘challenging’ or ‘difficult’ is self perceived inability to achieve that correlates to resilience in multiple contexts. #UKEdChat
A1: it is resilience to identify the developmental areas to improve in what they are studying- the passion, drive and willingness to achieve and learn for value rather than compliance #UKEdChat
A1 #UKEdChat When the child asks for help from their peers rather than the teacher 😊 It's a sign they are initiating things for themselves, and recognising other ways of learning.
1. When a child shows the confidence/determination/resilience of giving things a go first & then asking fellow peers for help before an adult! Shows level of ownership the indiv. chd has on their learning & allows them to see that chdn can be as effective as adults! #ukedchat
3. To me, it's as broad as saying this time last year when they transition & meet you properly for 1st time (totally dependent on you for calmness and rec'nition that alls well) to this time of year - more independent in lessons but need you to help them move up! #ukedchat
A3. Previous KS3 classes have been very dependent asking things like ‘should I stick this sheet here’. I fix this by doing a ‘silent teacher’ lesson which they really enjoy and works well. Happy to speak to people in more detail if they are interested #ukedchat
#ukedchat A3 Going from having to be told step by step to enter the room, go to their desk, get their books out and complete the starter activity on the board to just doing it. There's a certain Pavlovian aspect with training up SEMH students 🤔
A4 #ukedchat I think it equally as important for chn to learn to work as a team, collaboration, cooperation, communications are as important as independence
Thinking through ideas and problems before asking the teacher a question. Using other resources including their own prior knowledge to find answers for themselves. #ukedchat
Q4. Absolutely. Peer and group work are so important. It’s also important to see the whole class as one team/community! Dialogic, collaborative teaching has benefits for all #ukedchat
A4 #ukedchat when they are novices & need guidance. Once they become more experienced then they can strive for independence. ' Don't run before you can walk' springs to mind.
It's important to show students that we can learn together and from others as well as independently so it's important to provide varied opportunities to do so. #ukedchat
3.Think you need to strike fine balance between independence & a social constructivist approach! Whilst you want your chn to be as independent as poss, opportunities for pair/group work to allow discussion/bouncing of ideas also needs to be apparent across ALL subjects #ukedchat
#ukedchat A4 When they hit a barrier/dead end during a task I encourage them to ask a peer/neighbour before asking a TA/teacher...if you're working independently another point of view/approach can still be useful.
Insightful article which really hits home issues around inequality. On so many levels, we have to create structures and pathways that level the playing field. #edchat#ukedchathttps://t.co/5UT2tfwqms
If you are dependent on adults to help you get your points heard or to stop you manopoliaing the group- it isn’t really independent work. Really important to develop independence in order to be effective as a team. #ukedchat
A5 #ukedchat Start by providing a range of learning resources so pupils can choose where to find the right help, this builds confidence in learning independently
A5. Very important to share end goal and what successful learning might look like. That is the target. Then give choice of strategies to get there. Students choose their own - they have the goal, what it looks like to reach it and a choice of strategies... #UKEdChat
5. Explain resources chn can turn to. Esp. at start of yr, clearly model how resources(thesaurus, dictionary etc) can be used indep.! Explain that if chn randomly get up mid-lesson to get a dictionary etc, this is acceptable behaviour. Make it a big thing if any do so #ukedchat
This clearly shows why we have to aspire for all learners to succeed. How often have we ‘settled’ for second best when when in comes to our most disadvantaged learners? Too often in my view... #edchat#ukedchat
@ukedchat#UKEdChat A5: A system that promotes intrinsic rewards. Make your students realise that you want them to do well for THEIR future. Provide them with an insight into life beyond exams. Show them that it is them that need to get themselves there, we are just the support!
5. Also got to make these easily accessible for the children (ie - height) Waste of time modelling how a dictionary works but then when a child wants access to one, they're on the very top shelf and would never be able to safely reach! #ukedchat
A2 Opportunities for learning with others must be planned as well as time for independent learning . The skills required to work with others effectively are very important. Some chn prefer working independently. #UKEdChat
5. If a child shows initiative to get up indep. to use a thesaurus etc, give them a sticker. Can be then put on class sticker chart & can go twards chart that determines the 'whichever boy and girl has most stickers by Friday gets a prize' Soon, ALL will want to do it! #ukedchat
A3 At the start of Year 3 many chn struggled to start a task without help. Now at the end of Year 4 they think for themselves, take the initiative and everyone starts a task promptly (even begging for 5 more mins when I say it's the end of the lesson!) #UKEdChat
#ukedchat A6 If you can get them to the stage where they can autonomously get into groups/working partnerships without spending 20 mins having to do it yourself because Harry wants to work with Kyle, but he's already picked John etc etc then you're doing something right.
5. Make initial tasks simple and accessible to build confidence before moving onto more challenging activities. Praise independent skills above outcomes #ukedchat
A4 I agree with this. Many times when a child is stuck, I find another child can help by explaining it in a different way. One of the best ways of learning something is to teach it to someone else. #UKEdChat
A6. Students are confident to take on roles and responsibilities within a group and don’t rely on some students to carry the rest of the group #ukedchat
Nothing more satisfying than groups (4/6/w'ever) get on, no arguments, smiles, giggles, quality ideas/work, praise and encouragement from others! Group work really can be so, so, so (I could carry on) rewarding and warming as it's YOU to a degree that's created it! #ukedchat
A7 Coming in late tonight...CPD most effective when teacher-drive, I think. The "pull factor". "Push factor" leadership can accomplish something, but perhaps the best thing leadership can do is set up structures, give good people the chance to lead & facilitate... #ukedchat

Q7. Teachers are always going to be more motivated when they set their own targets for development and choose their own cpd courses based on their own individual needs. #ukedchat
A7 Agree - leadership can help by identifying themes and needs - help teachers see where the "itch" is, so to speak, to help them "scratch" more effectively! #ukedchat

A5 A lack of confidence can make some children very dependent on adult support. Teaching chnskills to access learning helps build a positive attitude + confidence. They have to believe they can achieve & if they make a mistake it's okay because they will learn from it. #UKEdChat
A7 It amuses me how often we don't think about teachers learning in the same way as students' learning. Some "homework" always helps (self-study, reading books / articles etc.), as does deliberate practice over time (not just a stand-alone one-off wholes-school session #ukedchat
A8 I've found using SurveyMonkey a good way to get teachers to respond with ideas - they can do so anonymously and safely (lots feel unsure about teaching their peers!). #ukedchat

#ukedchat If you're savvy enough to know you have a gap in your skill set...My go to place is the National Science Learning Centre in York. It is Mecca for science teachers 😁
A7. By the needs of the teacher. If teachers are engaged in the CPD because it is relevant to them then they will develop- it benefits the whole school to have staff who are committed to their CPD. #ukedchat
A7: Cannot there be both. We have 2 days a year focusing on whole school 'needs', however we must also seek our own focused CPD to fulfil both the hours stipulated as well as both ind needs and those identified in annual appraisals #ukedchat
A8 Reading about leadership has led to me making changes in how I lead my team. Researching different types of SEN has helped me to understand the individual needs of some of the chn I teach and to support them better. Signing up to free courses on Future Learn too #UKEdChat
A2. We use the flipped approach and bringing differing ind learning to group and class discussions enhances depth and breadth but also allows tutors to facilitate. This approach seems to also motivate as well #ukedchat
Q8. Impact of all this = I’m more informed, empowered to try new things that will help to support progress, more engaged & motivated kids (& more motivated self!), learn what works and what doesn’t and not afraid to make changes in order to improve! #ukedchat
A8 Yes, like you, reading has been a great part of my learning, too: leadership books, leadership blog posts linked from Twitter, dedicated websites like EEF, things other people are getting excited about like Learning Scientists... #ukedchat

A7 If you have a new whole school initiative then everyone can benefit from that cpd. As we are all individuals and responsible for our professional development, we need to identify our own cpd needs and that can guide cpd for an individual. #UKEdChat
With LM Video each of the 30 videos link to a specific topic from the Leadership Matters book and fits exactly with the structure of the Leadership Matters reflective Journal.

A8 - yes, absolutely - we gain confidence from reading and independent CPD, which makes us more effective practitioners, and more able to share good practice with everyone else. #ukedchat
