Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.
Q1: Last week we talked mostly about racial diversity. This week, we'll focus on gender. With regards to music lit selection, why do you think females are underrepresented? #musedchat
A1. I think instrumental music has historically been an “old boys club”. Things are changing but it is going to take some time before we notice a big shift #musedchat
A1 i always try and be aware of exposing Ss to voices of every kind. I am not sure it is as easy in the band/choir world. Once Ss see people like the@, their minds open #musedchat
A1: it's less convenient to find and less well known... I can name five pieces by men to use as listening examples for dynamics but would need to research to find one by a woman #musedchat
A1b: I don't think it's a total lack of music in any of these areas... but a lack of awareness/familiarity. We all need to do better to promote and use music by PoC/women/others who aren't dead white guys #musedchat
Jumping in A2. Tough one that I haven’t solved. I’m in a small district where “men are men.” Most guys that start on flute or clarinet end up quitting or switching. #musedchat
They're getting better...Julie Giroux is very prominent, and I saw a few pieces by Yukiko Nishimura pop up when I was purchasing music this year. #musedchat
