#NHCSchat is a monthly twitter chat for, about and by educators in New Hanover County, North Carolina. #NHCSchat is an opportunity for teachers, administrators and other educators in southeastern NC to grow and develop their personal learning network (PLN) by connecting to other educators in our district and around the world. This monthly chat will create a forum for NHCS educators to gather virtually around the common interest of providing the best possible learning experience for students in our district. Chat topics will vary but will focus on best practices for teaching and learning in the digital age and will be moderated primarily by NHCS educators.
#nhcschat@BlissCyndy@jeannietimken and I are tuning in from the road on our way to Pinehurst for the #NCPAPA Instructional Symposium
Looking forward to a great chat!
A1b: We are seeing more instances of acts of aggression towards - and by - youth. If we invest our time in helping to heal what triggered those acts and teaching accountability, we create a brighter future for ALL of us. #NHCSchat
A1a: For so long, all we heard was “zero tolerance” - punish w/o truly addressing the underlying reason the rules were broken...which means it might happen again. Restorative justice focuses on healing the underlying reason the rule was broken so it DOESN’T happen again.#NHCSchat
A1 Restorative Justice helps to reduce and repair the school to prison pipeline. We want to build stronger students and communities. #NHCSchat#traskmiddle
A2a: You can’t restore justice to a community when you haven’t created a community to begin with. Start with the teachers & principals - they have to trust each other. building staff cohesiveness leads to a trusting school community that extends beyond its walls. #NHCSChat
A2. Transparency and open communication. Shared vision; we all want to see Ss reach their potential, regardless of the obstacles they have to overcome. #nhcschat
A2b: Students have to feel safe and that their voices are heard. When our kids feel safe, their parents do, too. Inviting parents in, having family events - not just around special topics, but around shared values can help build that trust and sense of community. #NHCSchat
I believe we create trust by having an open communication line , as well as consistent and relevant information about school readily available #nhcschat
A2: It's important for schools to build trust between parents, students, and staff. The way my school builds this trust is through constant communication. It's important that parents know what is going on with their child(ren) at all times. #NHCSchat
A3: I think a key here is to teach empathy. The compliments project can help them see the power in positive. https://t.co/oX2URWYcPa Then talk about what the opposite would have felt like. Which is preferred? How can we carry this into other aspects of our lives. #NHCSchat
Q3: social skills groups, morning meetings, teachable moments, leading by example. Every disciplinary situation should be an opportunity to teach new behaviors and coping skills. #nhcschat#teachvspunish
A3. Model responsibility in your classroom. "If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready." No standing in line at 8:00am for the coping machines. #confessyourmess@AbbeyFutrell#nhcschat
Ss begin to learn responsibility when we make them accountable. As educator's it's also are responsibility to model and teach Ss what responsibility is and how to show it. #NHCSchat
A4: It's important for Ss to have adults in the building they can go to for support. Ts who will help them advocate for themselves and who they believe genuinely care about them #NHCSChat
A4: I think part of the "disciplinary component" for students is to create a safe space to talk about what happened before, during and after the incident. Not simply push out the door for another day. #NHCSchat
A5. I think deliberately teaching effective communication skills is important. Ss will see they are not that different from each other. Everyone wants to feel valued, respected, and heard. #nhcschat
Ss begin to learn responsibility when we make them accountable. As educators it's also are responsibility to model and teach Ss what responsibility is and how to show it. #NHCSchat
Morning Meeting, “1 Book - 1 School” (specific focus on books such as Wonder, Touching Spirit Bear), Kindness Club, team building opportunities for staff and students, PBIS initiatives for staff and students, intentional and public recognition of accomplishments #nhcschat
A6: Build and nurture positive relationships with students by being friendly - say hi in the hallways, check up on them, take an interest in their lives - ask how their favorite sports team did or even better - know how they did and mention it! #NHCSchat
A3: Ss begin to learn responsibility when we make them accountable. As educators it's also are responsibility to model and teach Ss what responsibility is and how to show it. #NHCSchat
A6: “Our students come to school with many issues on their minds and in their hearts. As educators, we can help them process their thoughts and feelings so they can better handle their situations and be more present in class.” https://t.co/E0CkxpCkqg#NHCSchat
A6: Build and nurture relationships by smiling, complimenting, laughing, being silly, being consistent, gentle and fair with criticism. Listening, pausing for student needs at the right time. #NHCSchat
Books are gateway to establishing relationships with my Ss! I learn so much from my Ss by paying attention to what they read. (And what they don't read.) #nhcschat
A6 :Personally, I love doing book clubs with the older kids (4th and 5th grade). So much real discussion happens and its a great way for students to connect and communicate #NHCSchat
I love that @traskbears teachers are given the time to greet Ss at their door for each class period. Alot of information can be communicated in that 15 second interaction! #nhcschat
A7: Stories connect us #NHCSchat - “Show a people as one thing, only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become.” Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - The Danger of a Single Story https://t.co/DG6vpaLAD7
A4: Our school has several alternatives to suspension. We minimize student exclusion by putting students in small group counseling, assign interventions, and have student restore relationships. #NHCSchat
A5: To build and enhance school community, we offer parent/teacher nights, STEAM nights, and we invite all stakeholders to celebrate different activities throughout the year. We love sharing all the positive things FHGE is doing in the lives of our staff and students. #NHCSchat
A6: I believe you build positive and nurturing relationships with students when you take an interest in them. Talk to your students. Say good morning, give a hug, say hello, and LISTEN to them. Treat them with respect! #NHCSchat
A10: Begin by opening a dialogue about Restorative Justice within your classroom and school - all should begin by understanding what Restorative Justice is and work together to implement RJ strategies. #NHCSchat
So glad you could join us tonight. Be sure to join us 12/12 for APP-y Hour at the #NHCSchat Café - There’s sure to be something for you on the menu! https://t.co/wBB7Etr1vF
