Hey everyone! Welcome! Please start by saying hi and sharing your role in education! Remember to include
-

Jeremy from Lansing Waverly HS in Michigan.
-
Rich from NJ! 2nd grade Self Contained Autism/MD. Don't have too much experience with portfolios but let's give it a try!
-
-
It definitely is a great way!
-

-
Hi, I am from MI, 6th grade Science teacher. My first chat.
-
SR, severe sped T from MA. My first - excited to learn from you all!
-
-
me neither! Other than the traditional sense. From what I've read about, they have tremendous potential
-
Hi, all! Robert here from Los Angeles.
-
Hey Shai, I bet you are exhausted! Get some rest, see you next wk!
-
amplifying , owernship of learning, and even in helping them demonstrate proficiency for future careers!
-
A1. This should be determined through a consensus built by T, S, and Admin. What demonstrates obtaining knowledge
-
-
A1 I like the idea of having two portfolios. One for the specific school year and one that goes from grade to grade
-
-
A1) Does there have to be an end date? With EdTech it could follow the S's to higher ed. I can see this as a digital library
-
Welcome Gail, you picked a great one! Enjoy, this group is full of knowledge!
-
A1 Also shouldn’t just be hard copy portfolios. Digital would make for a great option as well
-
Welcome! Lots of here each week!
-
-
I use for portfolio/P connection w/ Ss w/ severe/multiple disabilities. Ps love it! Here to up my game!
-
So important to have all voices represented, diff perspectives, all valued
-
yes! Having them show responsibility and caring for a portfolio is a great life skill.
-
Not necessarily, but you can. It sometimes makes sense for allowing students to set time-oriented goals
-
-
A1. We don’t tweet and save everyone lesson or activity. Shouldn’t make students save anything they don’t want.
-
Nice! Yes! I am familiar with the former and the latter was used for IEP's!
-
A1: I think it's awesome to just keep them going! The more info that can be added, the better!
-
Definitely, great thing abt so many options, keep materials access, see growth
-
I think that you can have even shorter ones if the goals you and your Ss want to meet have a shorter timeline
-
Seesaw is a great choice, many Ts have shared its benefits
-
Do many T's using Project Based Learning use portfolios?
-
And a great way to be able to self-assess, reflect, see growth
-
Google Drive has portfolio possibilities
-
one thing I've recently be exposed to is the idea of portfolios specific to a learning unit or foundational skills
-
A1 All my Ss' notes & rough drafts are in a composition notebook. Want Ss to share the work that built the finished product.
-
A1. Depends on S/goal. For my Ss, often need perspective of years to really *see* the progress.
-
Seeing growth to me is the coolest part. Ss sometimes need to see it to feel validated
-
great Q! Love to hear perspectives on this!

Do many T's using Project Based Learning use portfolios?
-
-
What a great way to do this, and can go back & think thru process,
-
I've started exploring around with it. Accessibility is key
-
A1 I want my Ss to show their parents that they value process equally as much as product. Formative is honored with summative
-
nice, yeah my Ss had M notebooks! I wish I could have had Ss record personal steps for every skill + pers. ex
-
A1: Do portfolios ever end? Just start new "volume"-I am guilty of looking to my HS/College portfolio and early career often
-
A1 I think Ss have to be involved, need and build support along way
-
-
A2 Model to them previous portfolios from other students and show them the value in identifying the growth they make.
-
A2 At the very least, staple the brainstorms & drafts to the finished product. Heck, put those on top to feature the journey!
-
NEED to get S consent - esp for pics and video. Even if just sharing with family!
-
I think it depends on the Ts level of content knowledge and the classroom management
-
A2. built in portfolio checks where Ts guide Ss through self reflection to determine if it is true measure of their learning
-
Hi - Phiona dropping in. Portfolios are great to encourage continued growth and value for process.
-
I agree! And with this, consistent feedback so that they can reflect on their learning and the process
-
-
A1: Ss need time to master their learning process along the way - it's about Ss making their learning visible
-
-
A1: Create web based portfolios to allow for ease of transfer and modification.
-
A2 Have conversations, ask Ss what they want to show, also share what we think they should, have time to review
-
Of course! It's their work, not ours. What happens to it is ultimately up to them
-
Yes, need accountability & time to talk with Ss , look over work, help them eval
-
I think there can be diff. "volumes" based on the the intended goals! I agree they should never stop reflecting
-
A2: We can teach Ss to value portfolios if we keep them too & if we encourage them to develop their own voices
-
A2. Use a tool that lets you flexibly create and then curate. Danger of obsessing on "perfect evidence"
-
Great options with web portfolios
-
A2: Conferencing can help a lot! Encourage Ss to choose things that show their strengths and that they've met their goals
-
Comes back to being a role model, working with Ss, also gives us their exper/perspective
-
A2 I’ll find myself sometimes looking in dropbox with old lessons and papers I wrote in college. Good to see growth/change
-
Perfectionism will kill the portfolio- it should show growth https://t.co/47gPLvcHRz

-
Hi all, jumping in late today! A2: I totally agree that teaching the tech to teachers is most impt!
-
Yes! Helping Ss discern can lead to great efficiency + deeper reflection/understanding of learning process
-
A2: One aspect of keeping portfolios that my Ss enjoy is writing different text types; they also like free writing
-
A2: portfolios are also a great way to help teach students the value of data, but in a good way!
-
A2: Ss should build a portfolio that is reflective of their learning & individuality Ss own the learning & portfolio Ts guide
-
A2: The best way to build efficiency is to be a "General who is on the battlefiled with his troops not back and the base"
-
Definitely, I look at some things and think WOW why did I do it that way,
-
Yes! So much for Ss to learn from every step of the way! Process portfolios! https://t.co/qboHlb5S9a

-
Totally agree, offers multiple ways to show and Ss can be creative
-
totally! I look back on the college newspaper!
-
A3: I think portfolios should be open to all. It's great reflective data for Ss, great student samples for colleagues!
-
Yes! Must make time for the learning that's made possible by documentation! https://t.co/7ulrVknXPJ

it's always fun to do that. And see how your educational philosophies have changed.
-
Q3 is now up in ! Join the fun!
-
is key helps Ss have a more meaningful exper
-
A3. All invested stakeholders but there has to be a common understanding of evaluating with a goal to improve S learning
-
A3) The more eyes on it and the increased amount of feedback can build upon the S a real collaborative feel.
-
A3 Anyone who shares a vesting interest in the child. Give the student the option of who can see it.
-
-
Agreed In which stages can diff. stakeholders have max impact? peers? Ts, Ps, Admin?
-
A3: Everyone! The more the merrier! I think anyone should be able to look and see a Ss progress. Ss like sharing, too!
-
A3 I prefer the idea of student led conferences over an anonymous review of a student's portfolio. Should be a conversation.
-
Interesting metaphor. Having an audience definitely makes a difference.
-
A3 Ss, Ts, Parents can share with family, leave it up to Ss and parents,
-
We also need to remember they are kids- so safe place to grow- agree?
-
A2: portfolios help to build student autonomy - students can decide how and what they want to share
-
A3: In my exp. , peers have great feedback at any point the timeline of a portfolio
-
Involving Ss in this way also helps build advocacy skills, confidence, and they can explain/share
-
A3 Imagine a first-grade teacher going to look at a 6th-grade former students portfolio? Such a cool opportunity.
-
A3. Not a one-size answer. Some Ss more sensitive to feedback, some want it. Some skills may require background to appreciate
-
But- some kids would show no one- I like kid having some choice
-
Such a cool idea! Benefit for both sides! https://t.co/zRJ06CPmhc

A3: Ss portfolio = 1 to world to share the learning & make their thinking visible - teaches all Ss how to reflect & adjust
