Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Welcome to tonight’s #ksedchat Topic: RethinkingEDU Introduce yourself What do you teach? Where are you from?
Add a GIF that shows how you feel about #ReThinkingEDU
A1 from when I was in school, teachers mostly focused on academic content. Now we have shifted our focus to the whole student, socially and academically #ksedchat
Survey them each semester (in each prep) to see which learning style/modality they most relate to. Change it up to meet that section's needs. #A1#ksedchat
A1: This year, I've worked really hard at giving the work back and not being the "Sage on the Stage". My Ss are so much more engaged in their learning. #ksedchat
A1: With the district's initiative about being trauma-informed,I have changed the way I help my Ss who are out of regulation, based on a new model out leadership team has shared with us. #ksedchat
A1: I am no longer the driver of the classroom. I am the GPS, the students determine their destination and route and I am just guiding them back to their chosen path. #studentcentered#ksedchat
A1: when I was in the classroom-Being a mentor for my advisory 21 advisory kids, we stayed together as a family for 4-years, and caring about them as people 1st #ksedchat
A1) I moved this year from a rural school to an urban school. I have evolved in not having to worry about if my kids would get a meal before I saw them again. I have been able to just enjoy teaching them. #ksedchat
A1) My last few years in the classroom I focused more on critical thinking and having conversations with my students centering on difficult subjects. Trying to prep them to be informed and engaged citizens and to THINK FOR THEMSELVES!!! #ksedchat
A1: I feel that the most change occurs in the moment of the lesson. You see something not working or going how you thought it would, and so you change it right then and there. This is something that I find myself constantly doing. #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
A1: how I have reacted to situations has completely changed. I have become more aware that it is not about me and it's more about them. Learning about their brain, and how and when is an appropriate time to respond has been a game changer in my room. #ksedchat
A1: More and more I try to just set challenges for Ts to tackle in PD...aka the learning doesn't only travel through me anymore. Learning doesn't happen in straight line its messy fun and frustrating if we foster opportunities for it to happen. #ksedchat
A1: Less “normal” tests and quizzes. I found that I was giving them just to give them and they didn’t have much purpose. I’ve tried to incorporate more projects or purposeful assignments. #ksedchat
A1: Obviously offering more choice and offering a variety of ways for students to show their learning but in social studies we have been trying to find avenues for students to be more engaged with gov. community and issues they want to speak to. #ksedchat
A1 New to teaching as of Jan. EVERYDAY is different and I see that I need to remain flexible in my expectations and the way I teach. Never stop learning. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A1) I use to do morning work, but saw that my students needed this time to restart their morning. I now do morning stations like Osmo, Makerspace, playdough, or time to share with me. #ksedchat
Sharon Norden from Derby Hills joining in late! A1: being trauma sensitive is something I have had to adapt to being a teacher. However it is one of the best things I have brought into classroom. #traumainformed#ksedchat
A1: I focus so much more on student happiness and doing the things that contribute to my students being happy...choice projects, snacks, one-on-one conversations, walks around the building, hands on learning. #ksedchat
A1 Flexible seating has almost become the norm in our hallway. The classroom is for the kids, not me. S choice and voice are much more important, as it should be. #ksedchat
A1~ I've definitely shifted my thinking to #progressnotperfection in all areas of teaching & learning &also have increased the shared ownership to include all support staff in daily lessons #takesavillagetoeducate#ksedchat
I have gone to several trainings on being trauma informed. Kids today deal with so many traumatic events and we have to do our best to help them be successful despite everything they are dealing with #ksedchat
A1 I find myself working hard to make sure that my lessons are more fun and engaging to capture the kids' attention. I also try to give them more opportunities to explore and come to their own conclusions.
#IHMarchMadness#ksedchat
A1) I’m trying to shift to project based learning. Education needs to emphasize how to scrutinize and synthesize. Information is everywhere now. That’s no longer the point. #ksedchat
A2: When I was in the classroom, I tried to know what was going on with all my students in all their classes. 1 student once told me "you know more about my classes than my mom" #ksedchat
A2: Both! I try to build relationships with all the kids in my building, even if they aren’t in “Mrs. Newkirk’s 6B class”, but I am also fiercely protective and loyal of my 6B Family. #ksedchat
A2) we are working towards being a school teacher. Data digs to look for trends, common language for expectations, celebrating success as a school. I think the difference is being willing to teach with your door open. Share your strength and steal great ideas! #ksedchat
A1: I’ve had to re-think the way I grade this year. It’s something I’m still working on. I ask myself, how do I authentically grade students based on ability? I’ve been doing more points for participating in class discussions over worksheets #ksedchat
Q2: I am a classroom teacher, but aim to make relationships with other students that are in the school, but I have not necessarily have in class. #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
A2 Hmmm...hadn't considered this before! A school teacher I suppose would see their connections beyond the physical dimensions of their individual classroom. More cross curricular, more connections! #ksedchat
A2 - School teacher, for sure. It begins with that shift from "my Ss and your Ss" to all Ss in the school being recognized as "our students". #ksedchat
A2) Both! And a community teacher. My classroom kids drive me every day, and they get a great deal of my focus. But they are still my kids even when they are no longer in my classroom. ❤️ #ksedchat
School librarian and I teach classes to every student in the building! They are all mine and we are moving toward more of us taking on that role in our building. #ksedchat
A2: Through coaching / advising / mentoring and sharing ideas with students as we help other teachers all over the place I think we are all even wider than just school teachers. #ksedchat
A2 I think I am a SCHOOL teacher. By this I mean that I am not only concerned about the Ss in my own classroom but those in our entire school. It truly does take a village. #ksedchat
A2) As a first year administrator one of the biggest changes has been seeing things from a wider angle. As a teacher, even while trying to be focused on the building, I got so wrapped up in my own classroom. Have no choice but to see big picture now. #ksedchat
A2: I want to be a school teacher. I want all kids to be our kids- I want us all to develop the mindset that we can help each other and we don't have to do this alone! #ksedchat
Q2 I feel like I'm more of a classroom teacher right now. My focus is on the students in my classroom this year. I can have the most impact on them. Once I am doing right by them, I will expand my focus to include more of the student body. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A2: I’ve always thought that we are in this together and we are only as strong as our weakest member of the team. We are a community, a team! #ksedchat
A2: I'm a school teacher! I'm happy interacting with the Ss outside my classroom, too! Interacting with the older Ss is something I'm going to miss the most when we go to a PreK attendance center next school year. No more Reading Buddies. #ksedchat
A2: We are doing @leaderinme study and our push is that everyone in the school relates to everyone and makes a difference. Doesn't have to be in your class either. I am a school teacher. #ksedchat
A1 Empowering students to be an active part of their education. Helping them see the importance of learning and celebrating each little milestone. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A2) Definitely try to be both! When I am in my classroom that is where my focus is. When I’m in the hallways saying hello to every S I see is a goal for me. Our Family Rooms allow me to be a better School Teacher! #ksedchat
A2: want to be a school teacher, working to break down walls between classes/classrooms (both physical and metaphorical). It takes a lot of work & patience & even trial & error. #ksedchat
A2: Being in a resource room, I do feel like a classroom teacher. Being a school teacher is a goal to reach for since what my Ss learn in my room is being applied across all settings. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A2) School T. Couldn’t even guess the % of students I work with that aren’t “mine”. And not just content. We discuss if they’re being their best self. And I’m (annoyingly) not afraid to call meetings for faculty. I think teachers should lead teachers, not admins. #ksedchat
Oh wow. I could send a book. ;) The BEST place to start is to read a book called Help for Billy by Heather Forbes. Then, implementing small things in the classroom. Mind if I email you some ideas? #ksedchat (just PM your email😊)
A2: School teacher, all Ss are our Ss. I try to greet and get to know other Ss in the halls during passing periods and in the lunchroom. Great thing about MS is that I could build a relationship with an Ss that is struggling with others. #ksedchat
Laura, IC from KC😁Taught/crafted sci & ss learnings w/ 20 beautiful years’ worth of students, now amazing young adults that I’ll always consider family. Now Ts—believing their voice & leadership will positively change the world💗#rethinkingedu#ksedchat#moedchat#joyfulleaders
That’s a tough position to be in. I remember wanting those kids to call me their teacher since I worked with them so much. Tough. #IHMarchMadness#ksedchat
A2: I’d like to see it go beyond “school” though. I sincerely want every kid to have a great education & a great school experience, whether they are in my district or not. I don’t need to be the best, just to surround myself with them & learn with them! #ksedchat
A2: A classroom teacher, I hope! A school teacher simply focuses on district and school curriculum without building a relationship with their students.
#IHMarchMadness#ksedchat
A2: I want to say I was a “school teacher” while also keeping the needs of the kiddos in front of me most in the forefront- and counting on my colleagues to do the same for their homeroom. #ksedchat
For some aspects, the bigger the school, the tougher this is. Only so many hours in a day and so many minutes of collaboration with so many different teachers. #ksedchat
A2: Both - all in for my classroom students, but also part of a team of teachers that works to meet the needs of each kid in our building. The difference is a collective ownership of student success. #ksedchat
A3) Good Question. It is one I struggle with everyday. I want to provide a chance for students to be innovative, but not sure how to get to that level yet. #ksedchat
A2: Impact kids every chance you get! When I was in the classroom I appeared on the HS weekly newscast. I did a fun bit called “life lessons with Mr. VanVleck” fun to do, kids loved it & learned a little bit. Put yourself out there #ksedchat
A3: I believe that relationships plays a key role in this. If students love you or trust you they will do their best for you every time... not just do it to get it done or because you said so! #ksedchat
A1: a big turning point for me was realizing relevancy is not just about what kids are interested in. It’s about being our world to them, both historical and current events, about helping them see how they fit into the world (how THEIR LIVES are relevant). #ksedchat
A3) I include them in our classroom expectations discussion at the beginning of the year. They set norms and consequences. They are then empowered to do what they said they would do. Can’t be mad at me if you broke your own rule. #ksedchat
A3: Giving the confidence that you believe that they will succeed and that you are going to help them to be successful. Sometimes at HS students are leery to 'try' due to past failures, giving them confidence helps to empowerment. #ksedchat
A3: We make them feel empowered by creating an environment that makes them feel like they can be successful and makes them willing to share their thinking. When students feel like they have a choice and feel respected we open a door for success. #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
A3: It starts with teacher mindset. If all teachers ask for is compliance, that’s all they will get. If we allow for and encourage freedom, choice, teaming, open forum and creativity-that’s what we will get! #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
A3: Working to let students pick and choose as much as possible. I work hard to push students to ask tough questions and not settle for easy answers. We go on tangents when they are curious about something new, whether it's related to the topic or not. #ksedchat
A3: Relationships, relationships, relationships! When Ss know you care, they will be more willing to take risks and do go above and beyond when we go above and beyond for them!#ksedchat
I can’t for the life of me figure out why it’s not letting me PM you 🙈 I would love any pointers you have! You can email me at AielloL@TurnerUSD202.org - Thank you so much! I’ll share them with my building too! #ksedchat
A3~ we have to provide daily opportunities that our Ss value and have shared ownership in...also fostering an environment where risk taking, mistake making are encouraged &supported #ksedchat
A3 Ah, there is the rub. For some S, compliance is safe, well-defined. Not necessarily challenging, but they can get it "right". Shifting that mindset is the key. #ksedchat
A3) Shifts have to occur on multiple levels. Ts need to approach their practice differently & students need to change mindsets as well. A lot of Ss have been in sit and get mode for so long they don't know how to "take the bull by the horns." Up to us to show the way! #ksedchat
A3: Relationships, relationships, relationships! Students know if we are excited to be in our classrooms or not. If we are, they find value in what we are doing. Investment is a mutual action. #ksedchat
A1: I have evolved from being the expert to learning along with my students! When this mindshift occured, my Ss became empowered and I witnessed life long learning occurring! #ksedchat
A3: It starts with me having a can do, growth mindset!! I also have to be present and build on relationships!! That is what it is all about!! #ksedchat
A2 School teacher for sure! All students are "our" students! Would love to break the "my" students or "your students." It takes a village. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A3: Shift in thinking for not only myself, but for my Ss. I want them to own their learning and not just do something because they want the grade. #ksedchat
A3: my goal is to help them see how they are part of something bigger, that they have something to offer the world (see my answer to Q1)... it’s still a work in progress for me, for sure! #ksedchat
A2: I hope to be both! I want to be a part of of the school community who takes care of every single student. I also want to be a classroom teacher which empowers and engages every student!
#ksedchat
A3: Give them choice in their learning! Also, authentic assessments - create content-based assignments they can do with purpose (community betterment, personal improvement, etc.)! If Ss can make personal connections to content they will take more ownership over it! #ksedchat
A1: As budgets have been cut and programs lost I’ve seen how important addressing the social and emotional behavior has taken on a stronger role in the classroom. More PD/strategies needed to educate the whole child #ksedchat#ReThinkingEdu
A3: my goal is to help them see how they are part of something bigger, that they have something to offer the world (see my answer to Q1)... it’s still a work in progress for me, for sure! #ksedchat
A3) Shifts have to occur on multiple levels. Ts need to approach their practice differently & students need to change mindsets as well. A lot of Ss have been in sit and get mode for so long they don't know how to "take the bull by the horns." Up to us to show the way! #ksedchat
A3: goal setting for every student will be a big initiative at RGS next year. Could be an academic goal, behavior goal etc....Empower the students to reach goals they set! Goals are not just for sports anymore #ksedchat
A3: I play the “I don’t know” game. I tell the kids, “you have to show ME how to figure this out.” And then I let it go, so my Ss really DO learn to become self reliant. Watching them make mistakes is SO hard. But it’s how we all learn! #ksedchat
I agree! But I think when we say create we think of products, which is important. But I also want students to create arguments, & defend them, & to propose solutions to problems, & analyze if their ideas would be successful, & to poke holes in each others ideas, &... #ksedchat
A3: We must give students choice in learning as well as opportunities to become the expert. As a educational body, we must allow students the freedom to select passions and pursue them!
#ksedchat
A3 My knee jerk reaction is some days with some kids compliance is enough. But when Ss are empowered compliance isn't an issue. Learning that is relevant, genuine relationships, confidence building...
#ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A4: We need to give a student an assignment that is right for them. We must take into account their stamina and their ability. I also think their assignments must show understanding and justification.
#IHMarchMadness#ksedchat
A4: Trying new things and adapting them when they don't go as planned. Asking Ss for input about what they like. Asking our PLNs for help and new ideas. #ksedchat
A4: more real world, deeper thinking activities. No need for a worksheet to prove they've got it. Give them a situation, a scenario, or better yet have them create one of their own! Learning by doin is So powerful! #ksedchat
A4: I am not sure on the exact answer, I just know that foy me reflecting on what I am doing with the class & what I expect from my students has drastically changed how I teach over the years. #ksedchat
A4 - @joboaler recommends in Mathematical Mindsets to “open the task encouraging multiple, methods, pathways, and representations.” - -Assignments that reach varying levels. #ksedchat
A4: Assignments that can be done in more then one way to meet the needs of different learning styles are awesome! When we ask a student to complete an assignment, it is not how well they do; did they gain the information they needed and showed growth. #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
A4: I think to myself, “After this assignment/activity can I trust they can do this skill without me?” If not, what can I do to make that more realistic? #ksedchat
A4: I meet their needs through constant, informal data gathering. I can spot the gaps in learning, slow down, and reinforce. Matches my beliefs because if we are going to do something, let's do it well, even if it takes more time. #ksedchat
A2: School... it takes everyone on the team to make the dream work! Classroom just impacts those in your four walls but when you reach out as a school teacher you are aware of all students. #ksedchat#rethinkingedu
A4) I need to improve here for sure! I sometimes get stuck in the this is how we’ve always done it. If it bores me, it’s going to bore them! Stealing ideas from y’all! #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A4: I want to focus on progress not perfection and growth vs. proficiency..but I’m still struggling to translate that into our current grading system and grade level essential standard checklist. #ksedchat
A4: I genuinely believe this will be different in every classroom depending on S interest, S cognitive and meta cognitive growth at the time of Assignment/Project #ksedchat
A3: I play the “I don’t know” game. I tell the kids, “you have to show ME how to figure this out.” And then I let it go, so my Ss really DO learn to become self reliant. Watching them make mistakes is SO hard. But it’s how we all learn! #ksedchat
A4: Sometimes I struggle with connecting rigor and relevance. I want to keep things rigorous and prep kids for the next level of edu but I don’t want to lose them in the process. #ksedchat
A4) HW is way, way down on my priority list. I’ll interpret “assignment” as “learner task”. I’m HS math, and for that me that means a lot of my class time is low floor, high ceiling tasks that ask students to use their own sense-making to resolve an open question. #ksedchat
A4) allowing Ss to have a say. They will but more effort into something that they are proud of and can take ownership of. Then they will WOW us! #ksedchat
A4: asking open-ended questions that Ss answer... mixing up assignments... matching assignment to skill I want them to practice... focusing on skills they will need in the future... expecting kids to problem-solve... (not sure if I even answered the ? here 🤷🏼♀️) #ksedchat
A4: We have to let go of “they have to read Shakespeare” and look to what is going to help Ss grow and learn and value the work they are doing or WILL BE a doing in the future! #ksedchat#easiersaidthandone
A4: DIFFERENTIATION! Assignment options, menu grading, PBL. Sometimes what I value most has to take a back seat to what my students need most. #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
A4: I consider Ss I teach in my Title 1 district. Generally, my Ss struggle to turn assignments in yet they are SO engaged in class. I was frustrated Q1 with all the low grades. I changed my assignments to more Socratic Seminars & interactive activities & grades ⬆️ #ksedchat
Always so inspired after learning from educators from chats like #ksedchat. Part of another Twitter chat you think I'd enjoy? Just give me a shout, happy to be there 🙋
A4) We have to be mindful of what we ask students to do. We can't give out low level thinking questions like candy & never hit on higher order thinking. What our Ss need, whether they want it or not, is to be appropriately challenged. We must give them that challenge #ksedchat
A4: We have to let go of “they have to read Shakespeare” and look to what is going to help Ss grow and learn and value the work they are doing or WILL BE a doing in the future! #ksedchat#easiersaidthandone
A4: Assignments must be meaningful!! Not just busy work! It can't be rushed or off of a checklist of to do stuff!! We have to let them question reflect. We have to reflect too. #ksedchat
A4: I try to give my students multiple ways to find answers for any assignment/ assessment and I also let them correct up to 3 times. WE get multiple tries, so they should too. That way in district assessments (when they get one chance) my kids will keep trying #ksedchat
(Hi all, I'm Melissa from Atchison--dropping in *a few* mins late). A4 I try to have assignments that require higher order thinking--analyzing, creating, synthesizing, judging as well as choice. I want my Ss to think critically but also pursue topics they enjoy #ksedchat
A5-When I taught Kinder our grade card showed parents specific things kids had or had not mastered. I would LOVE to have that again. Showing specifically what kids have/haven’t mastered. #ksedchat
A5: To truly evaluate S’s on what standards, competencies, and cognitive development they have mastered at that time. Instead of playing school = A #ksedchat
A5: To show what students actually know, and not so much focus on the effort being put forth. A 0 on an assignment, because they didn't turn it in, is not showing what they learned/know. #ksedchat
I had three different assessments to do...WITH 4 YR.OLDS...for conferences...
Maybe I could build relationships, if I weren't so busy assessing...#ksedchat
A4) Odd question- are there too many standards? I feel like there are so many that they rob me of affording the slow and deep learning opportunities that make a good thinker. I’d rather cultivate a deep thinker than a broad knower with little depth. #ksedchat
A5: Intrinsic motivation. Ss and Ts tend to look at grades as currency. “Do this and I will give you an A” instead of “Do this and feel good that you improved your life or someone else’s life in some way” #ksedchat
A5) We could let kids work at the level they are at. We could measure them by how much they grow. We could eliminate (hopefully) the kids view themselves as a failure. We could guide them to grow in the places they are interested in! You know, small things! #ksedchat
A5: My students would get to know other letters of the alphabet better, plus progress and development of thought could possibly be more emphasized opposed to an end point of a single grade. #ksedchat
A5 I feel that we could show more Individualized growth with something other than the 4-1 scale, again back to individualizing each Ss education. #ksedchat
As I work on Progress Reports for 3rd Quarter I think about how they do not show what we are doing or what we value. So thankful my principal allows me to do Student LED Conferences! So much more powerful and real!#ksedchat
A5 Less stress, no copying and pasting or copying off of classmates' papers. Ss who want to learn bc they care about the topic & want to grow as learners as people! #ksedchat
A5: Students would feel like they have the freedom to try, fail, try again, fail again. They may never get to the "right" answer, but they are using higher level thinking skills when testing their ideas. #ksedchat
Yes!! I teach ELA and personally love many of the classics but I don’t necessarily think that my students need to know them to be prepared for their future. At what point should we re-evaluate our content to match a changing world? #ksedchat
A5) I am interested in alternatives, but I don't know how feasible they are at the secondary level due to how entangled the current system is with college admissions. Change and progress can certainly be made, I am just not the person smart enough to figure out how #ksedchat
A5: A focus on the learning process - embracing mistakes. However, feedback has to be a main component of instruction if this switch is made. Hoping to make self-reflection more of the thinking/ evaluation process in my class next year. #ksedchat
A5:Getting rid of the current grading system is just another mind shift. “That’s how we’ve always done it” doesn’t mean it’s what’s best for our current students. If we want our students to think outside the box and be innovative we need to model that! #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
A5: the focus might be easier to shift to concept attainment and application from a measure of how quickly it takes a Ss to obtain proficiency. #ksedchat
A5) Please tell me you were here for the “assessments” edchat I hosted a few weeks ago. GRADES. HAVE. GOT. TO. GO. If it isn’t feedback, then what is the flipping point? Finish lines are great, but students should be taught how to know when “it” is enough. #ksedchat
Not particularly grading, but late work! Late work is my nightmare. Why are we penalizing the grade (an academic skill) for a behavior that has nothing to do with the academic skill! Let’s penalize for the behavior! @BelODell back me up here! 😉 #ksedchat
I agree. When a parent says “my child will never be on honor role because he’s Sped” breaks my heart. Our scale should show GROWTH, not just “you did well, you didn’t.” It’s a very dejection game system. #ksedchat
A5: I think our current grading system rewards students who are in the college-prep mindset. This is not working for students who will take a different career path and those are the students who I see struggle the most in academics. #ksedchat
A3 Sometimes, Ts need to back up and get out of the way. Create an environment where mistakes are ok. Choice and classroom culture will empower students to take charge of their learning. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A5: I feel that looking at how much a student has grown verses what number or letter grade they got, makes them feel more confident in any progress they make. +1 and a smiley face means you weren't all bad -Rita Person #ksedchat#ReThinkingEDU
As a Gifted T, I think so many from different grade levels go just 1 step farther. If we rearranged them and grouped them differently, there wouldn't seem as many. Also check out #PBL where you combine many standards in one go. #ksedchat
A5~ concentration on developing lifelong problem solving skills, global connectedness & authentic tasks that demonstrates student growth & learning & most importantly, good people #ksedchat
Yes! A child who has a C may have worked SO MUCH harder & learned more than a child who has an A. That grade doesn’t show the child that though. #ksedchat
A5: Many Ss would benefit from this. On a personal level I see that grades are not always an accurate measure of what a Ss knows and has within them. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
I love this but not all S’s want to dive deep. Some do, we should find a way to meet all the different interest our S’s have! Deep divers, broad interest, project minded, and task oriented S’s #ksedchat
Agreed. I see a lot of ELA teachers struggle with it because we get so attached to certain literature but I have to remember it’s not the literature I’m teaching, it’s the skills. It’s still difficult, though! #ksedchat
Check out our first ever documentary "In and Out". These students found out something and explored it. Is there a solution? Maybe not just one but at least they can start the conversation. RT and Share it out! https://t.co/PKbhra5gtp
A6 I’d have to say public shaming of students needs to be left behind, literally does nothing but shut a student down. None of us would want to be public ally shamed, so why do it to our students? #ksedchat
A5 We could focus on each Ss successes and create a better picture of the whole child. It would provide more information related to Ss holes/gaps. #ksedchat#IHMarchMadness
A6: Goodbye to Aimsweb, Dibbles and such test. Why should an arbitrary number define a students ability? We need to do less testing and give more opportunities for improvement.
#ksedchat
A6: This is tough because when thinking of what edu needs to leave behind-that means thinking about edu at ALL levels, including post-secondary. #ksedchat
A6: A regimented bell schedule. Telling students deep in a discussion, project or possibly close to a breakthrough that they need to stop & put stuff up is so brutal. #ksedchat
A6: We cannot deny that kids are NOT reading. We need to encourage independent reading without ALL THE WORK. We inadvertently kill reading with all of the vocabulary lists, plot diagramming, etc. We just need to let kids read. Even HS kids. #ksedchat
A6: anything we are doing just because “we’ve always done it this way” or “this is how we do it here.” (Not to say that everything we are doing is wrong, but the way we’ve done it is never a good enough reason to keep doing it!) #ksedchat
A6) Leveled reading numbers and AR testing. Let students have the freedom to choose books that they want to read. Let's focus on great read alouds and more independent choice-based reading time! #ksedchat
A6: Say good bye to Standardize testing. Stop the push for college only. Give kids some flexibility in their schedules to be successful at both school and home. #ksedchat
I taught ELA 11 years and we cannot control what books they pick up when they leave our class, so I always felt teaching them relevant reading skills that could help them read anything they picked up was more important than the book, classics etc #ksedchat
I grew up in an elementary school where we moved from class to class to class every day starting in 3rd grade. It was great. Different teacher every hour. Not much transition to learn when we got to JH. #ksedchat
A5: Example of why growth model wins over grades... this message was sent to me three weeks after school was out a few years ago. An A or B on the report card would not have meant the same thing. #ksedchat
A6: short lunchtimes. I would rather extend our day by 10 minutes and give a longer lunch to all Ss, than have my kids stuff or starve. I know it’s off topic, but short lunches is what I’d leave behind. #ksedchat
A6: Non-inclusive practices, traditional grading, punitive discipline (ISS/OSS), anything that doesn’t encourage collaboration and teaming between disciplines and grade levels. #ksedchat
A6: We cannot deny that kids are NOT reading. We need to encourage independent reading without ALL THE WORK. We inadvertently kill reading with all of the vocabulary lists, plot diagramming, etc. We just need to let kids read. Even HS kids. #ksedchat
