Monday May 30, 2016 9:00 PM EDT
Come out, come out wherever you are! Say hi, where you are from, and share your fave child dev fun fact.
Hi everyone. Meg from Chicago enjoying a very lazy Monday!
Hi, Jennifer from Atlanta. New here :-)
AMy here, moderating from The Canada. My fave child dev phenomenon is crossing the midline. One day no, next day no prob.
THANK GOD YOU ARE HERE. I am totally winging it tonight!
Welcome! Follow the hashtag and jump in wherever you can!
Hey! Leslie from Savannah, ha
I had the day off so I'm actually here on time.
Not really a fun fact per say, but I love watching the development of scribbles.
Ashlea, SF Bay Area: developmentally,Ks aren't fully ready to learn & apply lowercase letter formation. That "clicks" mid-1sr gr
So glad you girls enjoy my gong show. I aim to please!
Hi Everyone, my name is Dawn and I teach k-5 science in Indy. What's the topic for tonight???
Quiz: In 140 chars, what is diff btwn developmental milestone & learned skill?
Eh, that's what happens anytime it's my turn to lead the chat. I make it up every time.
Welcome. We are talking child dev & reflecting on our own knowledge in that area tonight.
Hello! Kelsey from Tampa, FL!
Hello! Sarah from VA, mostly lurking. Fun fact, backward writing shows a high comfort level bc kids feel they can play w/words
Unless there is a cog/phys/soc reason, development happens to all in time, can't teach it. https://t.co/tAJnBGnsO4
Quiz: In 140 chars, what is diff btwn developmental milestone & learned skill?
Hi still awake in UK and thought would drop in as Europe time chat on hols this week 😊
Developmental - crossing the midline. Skill - drawing lines
Q1: On a scale of 1=NON EXISTENT to 10=SOLID foundation, how would you rate the child dev. inst in your tchr training prog?
Hi Nicola! We are on holiday in US today as well. How are you?
developmental milestones happen regardless of teaching, crawling, walking, eating with a spoon, leanring a skill requires Ting.
development happens with no instruction
My fave child Dev fun fact- I need you to do this for me- it's lunch time? I got this! Speedy skill acquisition 😂
Another fun fact: if infants are never exposed to vertical lines, they never learn to see them.
I didn't study :( point kids reach as they age vs a specifically taught skill?
Yes! Dev processes occur in all typically dev kids in predictable order at predictable timeframes.
How did they fugue that out??
Am good and you? Not chatted with you all in SO long 😊might not stay awake for all
A1:I think I had one class on child development at Purdue. I definitely could have used more.
8-9 I have a masters in early c Ed - heavy in development
They did studies on kittens.... and then aligned structure/function of feline eye w/human.
A1 I can't recall any 😦
Shockingly common - teacher prep programs w/NO child dev courses. https://t.co/0VrsxZBIkF
A1 I can't recall any 😦
despite heavy background in development - it is very hard to merge what I know is right with current expectations
A1: Undergrad teacher training was content heavy- development light which is why I went back to school & got masters in chi dev
Are you on holiday all week or just for the day?
Jumping in for a few! Christie, K teacher from Boston.
RIGHT?! I feel bad for kittens, but is my fave fun fact. Such good illustration of "sensitive" periods in dev.
IMO, traditional teacher prep doesn't do enough with development, particularly birth to 5 development.
Only got that by reading books as a parent of 3 kids
I took SO. MANY classes on how to teach math/reading/writing. Next to nothing on how to teach CHILDREN.
A1: Grad school a while ago, but don't remember much child dev. More in undergrad.
The brain is amazing and grows and grows in the first 5 years, teachers need to know this!
Prob around a 4 and I qualified in 1998. My child Dev qualification pre- teacher training has been invaluable
funny - I only took 1 class on teaching reading
I am piecing together a degree, took a class devoted to it and all syllabus talk of linking, we'll see if they do
Or HOW children learn. in undergrad learned all about contents, but no connection to cognition. https://t.co/EpRUHPGfOp
I took SO. MANY classes on how to teach math/reading/writing. Next to nothing on how to teach CHILDREN.
My undergrad was all about development!
or discipline or expectations of learning modes.
My grad prog was all human dev - ece to adult dev to aging...
Because if more people knew about cognition and the way the brain develops, more people would understand play.
All week but it is a Bank Holiday today so an official day off 😊 What about you?
my program really focused on how they learn - I didn't get a lot of practical advice - trial by fire
omg Nic are you still UP???!!
So excited to be a part of tonight!! K teacher from Chicago :)
Nice. Enjoy! Only today for Memorial Day.
Just had a phone debacle but am back on track now!
Q2: In the time since you finished teacher training, what have been the best tools to improve your understanding of child dev?
A2: Brain development classes helped make so much sense for where kids are and how they learn.
And this, my friend, is why we get along. We are development nerds.
Taking classes while teaching helped things make sense to me for sure!
A2: I read voraciously after undergrad, then went to grad school to study CHILDREN (not education).
Hello. I'm from Chicago too. I'm a director of a preschool. Welcome!
A1: We took 1 class in our grad class, but I learned so much more being in the classroom & still learning from incredible OTs
RT : Because if more people knew about cognition and the way the brain develops, more people would understand play. …
Yep thought would drop in 😊bit sleepy though
A2 Putting it into practice! Testing out the theories on my own kids mostly
You are a serious trooper!! Go to sleeep!!! :) xoxox Is it a week long hols?
Yeah I mellowed out a lot when i had my own kids.
Q2: Studying the practices and respect for children/families from Reggio educators & roaring convos on play w other ECE types.
Yes!! It was really really wonderful!! I hope you didn't work today Meg?!! :)
A2: being around children and constantly researching and utilizing the strength of our amazing staff
A2: Also reading Bev Boss and Vivian Paley and being so so so fortunate to have amazing mentors from helps.
OTs have so much to offer!! Should be more with this!
I did not. Not really. Only answered a few emails.
Yes! I have often ask that my school bring in an OT for PD.
Yes! My best local ECE child dev geek friend is an OT. She knows SO. MUCH. STUFF. https://t.co/cfkpV5juJJ
OTs have so much to offer!! Should be more with this!
I am in awe of our OT - she is so informative, helpful, amazing
Yes!! Way underused resource I think!
A2.5: Also, if you need some tools/support, may I suggest listening to/reading . Lisa makes dev easy to digest.
haaaaa! That's beautiful!! A beautiful night!! :)
can we have a kinderchat with an OT? I don't have one at my school.
YES! is a hero. She knows ALL THE THINGS. https://t.co/NCqIqGU1yF
A2.5: Also, if you need some tools/support, may I suggest listening to/reading . Lisa makes dev easy to digest.
Request noted. First we need to find an OT on the twitterz...
I think that is one reason I love the Handwriting Without Tears program- developed by OT
They are incredible resources, I think I might be addicted :)
Q3a: On scale of 1=abysmal to 10=I rock at this, how would you the way you support kids' social-emot dev in your class?
A3-1 I need to work on this area with all my Ss. I have so little time with them, Ss come to my class with so much baggage
had a child who got OT services 2 times a week - mom didn't want him pulled but 1 so OT came did motor madness with whole grp
baggage from other classes, stuff that happened to them at recess or lunch, I just don't feel I have time or resources to handle
A3 8, always room for improvement, but I love our Second Step program & conflict resolution is a passion of mine :)
I may know some. , any OTs who would be interested in joining Twitter chat with ECE teachers?
Q3 6-7 students have so much drama - I don't know what to say or how to help- lack of time to talk to them
I'll tell you 10 min of "Puppet Problems" goes a looooooooooong way! Puppets act out scenarios, kids call out to solve
A3: I spend a lot of time at the beginning of the year setting the stage for the rest of the year, very important
Q3b: On scale of 1=abysmal to 10=I rock at this, how would you the way you support kids' PHYSICAL dev in your class?
I often feel like I don't have time to talk 1:1 very often, feel rushed! Wonder if their parents do?
one of my favs is to get a pic of the President & any tattle tellers have to "go tell to the President"
Some Ss work to create drama. How do you know which situations are in need of your attention vs which are created for attention?
I've focused more on it this year. We do brain breaks and get outside each day, or do gonoodle too
Great idea- we might steal this for Europe time chat too 😊
A3b Lucky we have 2-3 recesses but would like to offer a variety of seating/standing options in class
do you have time for classroom meetings? Might good to discuss and solve as a group.
Yes! My Fred the Frog is a big hit in our class https://t.co/VCJoXVWoM8
I'll tell you 10 min of "Puppet Problems" goes a looooooooooong way! Puppets act out scenarios, kids call out to solve
No idea what physical, social or emotional developmental things I should be working on or looking for???!!!
We just found a SpEd UK Early Years- trying to remember handle
A3 I pride myself by the fact that I am insisting that the preschool is one that is run with child development in the foreground
Getting a new teaching partner next year who does Responsive Classroom; hope to learn!
My kids love scoop rockers in my room
Now, obviously we have work to do, but when I took over I was (I am) determined to create enviro that respects how kids learn.
Q3c: On scale of 1=abysmal to 10=awesome, how would you rate fit btwn your curric & normal cognitive dev for your students? ?
Supporting physical dev means providing time to intetionally build strength/balance/coordination...Not just recess/brain breaks.
Just googled it - they look awesome!
I'm gonna say it folks, if kids are playing & engaged in respectful & caring relationships w teachers, you will hit all dev.
A4; really not sure.Where do I go to get more info about social, emotional, physical development and what is appropriate for Ss?
Start w/a good basic child dev text book. I like Laura Berk's work.
6 maybe 7 state expectations are not realistic but administration is supportive of several appropriate activities
RT gonna say it, if kids are playing & engaged in respectful & caring relationships w teachers, you will hit all dev
read The Importance of being Little for the big picture and Play: The Foundation of Children's Learning for the how to.
A3c: 5-7 depends on the unit, but we do our best to accommodate lessons to mirror student needs
Lucky to have awesome PE teachers who know about this
share some of your intentional examples, would love to hear ideas
We do Reggio at my school. No idea how it fits into my required Science standards.
Each has personalities- "Beavie" is always kind of plodding. Chester= worried and clueless "Doggie" is bad :)
Just got home and popping in for the end of . Liane from Abby, BC here.
A3c Much of the kindergarten expectations in public schools are not appropriate, which is why I fight harder for PreK to be play
PE, for its own sake - yoga for strength & flexibility, dance for coord. Not just as "breaks" from "real" learning.
play dough, monkey bars, balance beams, sensory play, coloring (with crayons), beading, scissors...
don't you love when you whip out those guys and Ss are immediately hooked?
Just walked in and saw this ?. Will have to check out what I missed. It was a big walking day 4me https://t.co/WQZ7ofWZvM
Quiz: In 140 chars, what is diff btwn developmental milestone & learned skill?
Reggio inspired learning is all about investigating, looking closely, and documenting. All of which make up science!
RT Reggio is all about investigating, looking closely and documenting. All of which make up science!
Q5: What is one small thing you can do (and get away with) next yr to improve one area of child dev in your prog next yr?
Outdoor play is great too. Having them roll down hills, climb trees, and dig. Builds those muscles.
those scoop rocker seats look like a great idea!
We do lots of this. I thought Reggio was about whatever the Ss want to learn about? No structure-very free for all.
Yes! It all comes back to OT and fine and gross motor strength!
A5 Would love to squeeze in some yoga
Oh I hear you-essential. Lots of ours include yoga, breathing, strength, postures, balance, mov't,
I actually did it this year -- I added a recess - just kind of worked it in and got away with it
Monkey bars - serious strength there, have you tried these lately? Wow! How do they do that?!
These schemas are the best thing I've read in awhile!!! Standard in UK
A5: I'm rearranging my space next year to allow for more open areas to move. Also, going outdoors more. I have been lax this term.
A5: dedicated 1:1 time to talk to Ss about anything they want
Hi Liane- just managing to keep eyes open in Uk 😴 how are you?
It's the opposite. Child led is not a free for all. It is intentionally creating env & facilitating w/in relationships.
Right? My kids last year LOVED to tree and climb the tree. Our school ground needs more climbable trees IMO.
Time to wrap up, friends. Share your fave blog or site to learn about child dev!
A5: I'm also going to start our reflection talks earlier in the year, I think. Try to get in touch with how we are learning.
It's about documenting children's learning & dev, it's knowing children deeply and knowing how to scaffold their play
thinking of moving free choice centers to the morning - takes pressure off me starts s day off positive -may improve tardy prob
Child led is about respect for children and understanding of development. It's co-creating knowledge wit the kids.
Good! How is it going? I am not ready for the year to be over here!
got to run - thanks for a great chat
That's why "child led" gets a bad rap- too many think it DOES MEAN a free for all! (teachers included!)
RT Child led is about respect for children & understanding development. Its co-creating knowledge with kids
Child Led teaching is play. And facilitating this type of work is harder than desk work teaching.
We an hour of exploration in the morning. Not free choice, but provocations. It works WONDERFULLY!!
love this idea! Such a fun way to start the day, throughout the year!
