Hello #kaganchat I’m Eli, Lead Learner/Principal and proud #Kaganite from NM! I’m on time and I remembered this month! (Thanks for holding me accountable @llglass)
A1 My staff just had CL Day 1 w/ @KristineAtKagan so I had been prepping them and now reviewing w/ them w/ some basic structures. We’ve had so much fun w/ a variety of TB/CB topics as we rebuild our school culture #KaganChat
A1 #KaganChat I’ve seen teachers this week while I’m coaching do a 1st round w/ “What did you eat/do over Thanksgiving break?” then follow w/ content. I’ve seen it w/ Jot Thoughts, All Record RoundRobin, and RallyRobin.
Hi #kaganchat I'm Kim Seefried and I am a STEM/MTSS Coordinator at a K-8 school. I'm tweeting from Longmont, CO. I am beginning support the teachers in my building with how they can incorporate Kagan structures into their classrooms.
A1: I love to have them do silly things like listing fortnite dances, holiday songs, or I’ll randomly pull an idea from the class building book. #kaganchat

A1 I think it is important to ask questions about things that the kiddos are interested in the most. Knowing this information really gets kids talking! #kaganchat
This is my first Twitter Chat :)

A2 I buy and own most Kagan books that are appropriatedor my grade level! They are awesome. I also make my own Quiz Quiz Trade based on our curriculum.#KaganChat
A2: Our Tier 1 ELA Curriculum in Louisiana uses Learnzillion Guidebook Units. The content and lessons offer themselves up to structures. My most used lately has been timed pair share when we are reading texts and giving responses with text evidence. #kaganchat

I was wondering if you could clarify "ready made structures for me?" Do you mean using the Kagan book which has structures that are already created but you need to make copies, or is there something that is all ready put together available?

#KaganChat That’s an understatement! Linda has SO many Kagan resources. I’ve been blessed to be able to be in her classroom many times. It’s always a magical learning environment!

Hi Brenda, thanks for joining us! By ready made resources, we mean handouts, curriculum, cards, manipulatives that your already have access to. Take one of those resources and match a structure with that resource to maximize engagement. #kaganchat
A2 I love the products made by Kagan and just really reflecting on DOK levels and making my own. As a principal I often have to do that to make PD and PLC content meaningful. Maybe I need to create a Kagan resource for admin for content for data, culture and leadership #KaganChat
A2. As a school with a large population of 2nd Language Learners, we are working to combine Leveled Language Frames and Accountable Talk Conversations with Kagan Structures such as Round Robin . or Write Round Robin. #kaganchat@SVVSDdts#SVVSDTechbingo
A2 again... I use the “workbooks” from our curriculum a lot with structures.. since we are supposed to use them- structures make them interesting!#KaganChat
#KaganChat For example, I see a lot of teachers use commercially-produced flashcards for Quiz-Quiz-Trade and cut up worksheets from their district-adopted textbook series for RallyCoach, Fan-N-Pick, and Quiz-Quiz-Trade.

We are beginning to incorporate Kagan into our school's PD as well. If we want teachers to use the tools it is critical to model how we can use the tool :) #kaganchat
A3: Today we did a Live Museum on the Early Explorers. I had my students RallyRobin the challenges and motivations of the explorers. Of course we coupled accountable talk into our RallyRobin routine. -Sully #kaganchat#nicandsully
A3: My accelerated Ss used RallyRobin to give evidence to solve crimes to practice supporting claims. Another group used Continuous Round Robin to share answers during a connotation activity. #kaganchat
A##kaganchat Brenda We have not actually used it yet, but we are learning about the state of Missouri. A RallyRobin or RoundRobin idea would be to name all the bordering states of Missouri.
#KaganChat A2) the Kagan Quuz Quiz Trade books for all levels of math are amazing and we use them all of the time. Today I pulled the ones that ask the kids to place the decimal point correctly in multiplication problems
The Berry Bunch is close reading through a lens to determine a character's point of view and looking for text evidence to support their thinking. We used a Continuous RoundRobin to share our thinking. @MrCoachEli@MVESWolfPack@KaganOnline
Hey #kaganchat! Can't stay to chat tonight, but wanted to drop in to say hello to all my amazing @KaganOnline pals! This terrible headache is going to keep me from being much fun during a chat this evening. Off to bed early for this gal!
This is such a great way to support teachers and really shows commitment to professional growth! Ha! I bet it makes PD waaaaaaaaaay more fun! #KaganChat

#KaganChat A2) The Kagan Quiz Quiz Trade books for math are great! I pulled the place the decimal in the correct spot cards for multiplying decimals for our class builder tomorrow
A4: We have been using RallyCoach to practice different grammatical skills on worksheets. Ss are able to practice the skills and help each other at the same time. #kaganchat
A3 #KaganChat I love to use RallyRobin to have all students review steps of a structure right before we use that structure, especially if it’s been a while since we’ve used that structure. For example, “Turn to your shoulder partner & RallyRobin the expectations for JotThoughts.”

A4 In math stations we use worksheets sometimes. My students use RallyCoach to teach and reinforce math skills when they aren't at the teacher table. It takes half the amount of problems this way, too. #kaganchat#nicandsully
A4 #KaganChat My Go-to @KaganOnline structures to engage students in powerful practice with worksheets are RallyCoach, Sage-N-Scribe, and Simultaneous RoundTable. Also like to cut them apart for Fan-N-Pick & Quiz-Quiz-Trade. Solo practice w/ worksheets can be meaningless.
Q5: I think being aware of pairings in situations where you want students to coach can be key. Starting with praises, and working up to feedback has helped me lead my students to being better at coaching each other. ~Nic (Heather)
#KaganChat#nicandsully
A5: Definitely model it, either with another teacher (if possible) or with a student helper, give them examples of praises or cheers to use, show them how to tip, tip, teach, and try again. #kaganchat

A 5-We just talked about that today! Make sure they have some ideas of what is polite to say... I usually make a poster for what would be good sentence stems for them to use #KaganChat
Q5: I overload on modeling how to coach. I usually don't let students start teaching until the 3rd day of new material. The last thing you want is for them to teach the concept the wrong way. #kaganchat#nicandsully
A6: I really think the foundation of coaching lies within Classbuilding and Teambuilding. Students can really coach and support each other and elevate learning when they feel safe with each other. #KaganChat#kaganADED
A5 #kaganchat I like to use students to model what the structure looks like and sounds like. Combining the physical action with seeing can be very powerful and helpful for students
@SVVSDdts#SVVSDTechbingo
#KaganChat A5) Have them use Jot Thoughts to brain storm things to say when their teammate needs coaching - they also like to brainstorm things not to say
A5 Practice, Practice, practice! Sentence stems, gradual release, modeling, prompting, anchor charts and visuals. Lots of TB/CB because culture eats structure for lunch. Make that coaching part of culture and it takes care of itself #KaganChat
When teaching, we talked about the importance of coaching. Our job as a class was for everybody to learn more. So when were coaching… that was an opportunity for all to learn. Teaching is very different then telling! Kids have a way of explaining #kaganchat
So true! And the tips look different depending on the academic function. Coaching tips for Knowledgebuilding are going to be different than coaching tips for Procedure Learning. #KaganChat
#KaganChat I saw a teacher today who created a slide (regularly added to and revised) of coaching sentence stems (“Why don’t you look at the anchor chart and see if that helps?”,etc) and projected it during Quiz-Quiz-Trade. I’ll try to go back to her room tomorrow & get a picture
#KaganChat A6) If u hear the same misconception as u circulate, stop and do the mini lesson right then - no need to drag papers home and wait until the next day to fix
A6 I keep a clipboard handy and take notes as I observe the students completing structures. Especially sage-n-scribe, Rally Coach (that I use a lot during my small group instruction). I also Use it during numbered Heads Together #KaganChat
A6: the more frequently Kagan Structures are used, the more often we have opportunities for formative assessment data. Just saw how powerful this is listening to students listing causes and effects this week. #KaganChat
A6 #kaganchat I like carrying an IPad around with me to jot down notes about what I am observing and hearing when moving around the room. I also like to take pictures as this helps me remember the context of what was taking place in the moment.
A6: Make sure that you make the rounds to hear the different pair/group conversations to ensure Ss are demonstrating understanding of the material. #kaganchat
#KaganChat Awesome.! I think it’s sometimes forgotten that we have to provide direct instruction & model. Coaching structure should happen during guided practice portion of our lesson, not during the initial instruction — that’s when we use processing structures like RallyRobin
Q5: I overload on modeling how to coach. I usually don't let students start teaching until the 3rd day of new material. The last thing you want is for them to teach the concept the wrong way. #kaganchat#nicandsully
A6 The biggest tip is be very mobile and intentional as you move around the room. Especially noting what needs to be retaught and if you’re seeing it a lot stop the structure and reteach right away #kaganchat
Bonus: I am thankful for my grade level team for being so supportive and helpful in times of need. I am also thankful for my family who still love me when I bring my work home. #kaganchat
A6 #KaganChat For Fan-n-Pick, I had students discard a card in pile in middle of table if teammate got it right immediately. Discarded on edge of table if teammate needed coaching, so I could pick up card and see which ones were causing problems so I could re-teach if needed.
Bonus: I am thankful for students that rise to meet any challenge you give them. I'm still in awe over how well my students performed today. It's all about our expectations of them. -Sully #kaganchat#nicandsully
Bonus Answer: Thankful for an awesome team of teachers to work with, and opportunities to branch out in our lessons using strategies and structures that work for our students at any given time. ❤️ #thankful#kaganchat#nicandsully
Bonus ? #kaganchat My husband and I just returned from a short trip to South Africa. I am so thankful that our students have an educational system that thinks about how we can always make learning experiences match their needs!
#KaganChat I’m thankful for my beautiful family, my amazing friends and colleagues, and the wonderful educators who I am blessed to get to work with around the world regularly!
Thanks for a great hour! So blessed to get to spend time with my Kagan chat Family! Have a happy Holiday Season everyone! See you next month! #KaganChat
