The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
A1: When it comes to screen time, I try to limit the exposure my kids have to less than an hour a day at home. Weekends they get more; I don't feel it's harmful, but I do think too much of anything is bad. #michED
A1: kids forget how to interact with people. we need to cut down screen time and exposure. Make kids talk with eachother. Inside and outside of the home #miched
A1: I manage it with my own children much better than at school. When I'm using it in class, I expect everyone to be on the same site/screen. When we aren't using something together, I try and have "iPads down". #miched
A2: Great question, many class use blended or flipped model and the computer has replaced textbooks and handouts so it is difficult: and some jobs employees stare at screen all day #michED
A2: I struggled with managing screen time at first in the classroom, but became more comfort telling kids to "put the devices away" as I learned the focus is on the pedagogy, not the tools. #michED
A2: Being 1:1 with iPads, I try and make sure we're not using it all hour. When doing activities/lessons/explorations, most are less than 15 minutes on the iPad. #miched
A2: I ensure that all tests and quizzes are paper and pencil, projects always have non-tech options and my AP classes are encouraged to take written notes over digital. #miched
Honestly, I haven't thought about "screen time" as much as a Tch as I have as a mom. With iPads 1:1, I'm always wanting to incorporate tech when maybe I need to think about not adding to screen time too much! #miched "Everything in moderation."
Reminder:
When children need instruction in a given area, they are not "struggling"...they are learning.
The absence or imperfect execution of a literate behavior should not immediately equate to "struggling".

When I was a student in High School our school was brand new and loaded with technology, zero of my college classes required it outside of word processing. #miched
For example, I gave 4 options for review today. 2 on screen, 2 off. @Socrative quiz, online jeopardy ppt, paper stations & paper "around the room". Try and have tech and non-tech. #miched
Believe in yourself, you chose this career because you’re passionate about it. So when the bad days come, and they will, survive and advance. We have ALL been there. #miched
Q3: According to the first findings of a nearly 10-year study, children with close to two-hours of screen time got lower scores on language and thinking assessments. https://t.co/0oNsPmgUvT#michED
Q3: According to the first findings of a nearly 10-year study, children with close to two-hours of screen time got lower scores on language and thinking assessments. What are your intial thoughts about this? #michEDhttps://t.co/DP4EJMtQqb
A3: My first thought is, it doesn't surprise me. If a kid is staring at a screen, are they thinking, just taking in information, being entertained? They probably aren't using any language. Not having conversation with others, reading faces, social cues. #miched
A3: My initial reaction to screen time reports about lower test-scores; are these kids scoring less because the amount of time they're on screens, or because the amount of time parents and others aren't engaging them? #michED
A2: Tt monitoring is crucial. I think varying assignments is just a necessity. If you are 1:1 you still need to offer and require many alternatives throughout each day. #miched
So true - is it because they aren't engaging in other play, reading, conversations, etc. Great point Ben.
Maybe it's a little more on the adults that aren't as engaged and not just because the kid is on a screen (As I sit and type and ignore my child. ;)) #miched
Q3: Not surprising, I wonder if the language testing was updated to include any “new” skills that previously haven’t been tested. I think communication has suffered in all walks, not just this one. Hopefully, more research will follow and habits. And be broken. #miched

Q4: If you were forced to implement more screen time with students (either thanks to curriculum or 1:1 initiative) how do you make it "worthwhile?" #michED
A4: Activities that foster Ss communication or interaction online like @Desmos or @Classkick I also use tech to link ans keys & practice so trying to be more "green" (more efficient for Ss & Tch) #miched
A4: I lead the Technology support efforts for a 1:1 school district, so I feel the pressure to make sure devices are used, so striking a balance between screen-time and down-time is important for me. #michED
A4: By establishing routines for use/ subjects or lessons is important. Then add something new/switch up the norm. I also think if you limit wasted time that we normally don’t talk about. In non-tech talk- “if you’re down with your assignment you can have free time” #miched
A6: When my kids were in elem., we enforced about 20-30 minutes a day w/ personal device. Set timers and stuck to it. As they've entered JH, that has expanded. Can't say I set a timer anymore. It's more a "put it away" or "5 more minutes". #miched
