A1 Independent learning is knowing what information you need to find out to complete your task, how to find it in a range of appropriate sources, how to evaluate those sources, and how to use the information ethically #UKEdChat
To me, independent learning is a self-motivating and important aspect of life. Finding the drive and passion to explore a concept you wish to learn more about, and knowing how to do it #ukedchat
A2 #ukedchat It can, and it did. But I suspect there is too much straight jacket teaching and learning all about passing exams and getting results for school. A lot of spoon feeding required š A shock when arrive at uni!
A2 As a librarian I think the best place for independent learning is within the library because students have access to a wide range of resources. This could occur in a classroom but not if they've been directed to one book or website #UKEdChat
A2 Definitely feel that more should be done regarding the transition from sixth form to uni! Definitely a shock with respect to how much independent learning is needed #UKEdChat
Q1. Independent learners should have the confidence to think critically and apply the knowledge and skills they have gained. It does not mean that they can't ask for support; however they should not be spoon-fed. #ukedchat
A3 Project-based work is good. Questions that require searching more than one source. Open-ended questions that require a conclusion or opinion. Don't accept cut and paste work. Insist on a bibliography #UKEdChat
A3 Students need to be shown how to work independently ... they're too used to being spoonfed and being taught to the test. Need more time in the curriculum for exploring their own ideas #UKEdChat
A2 Micro teaching involves students teaching each other ideas & content during a lesson. There is lots of evidence that shows that students make the greatest amount of progress when they have to explain ideas & concepts to each other.
#ukedchat
A3 #ukedchat Give responsibility for project-based learning, or flexibility to learn about a subject/topic in more depth - but appreciate the problems of exam focused straight jackets š¬
A3 Needs to happen before students embark on exam curriculum. Skills learnt in KS3 can then be applied and reinforced in KS4/5. HPQ is good for this! #UKEdChat
A4 No they don't have independent learning skills because they're not taught them! Occasionally get piecemeal approach via some lessons but it needs a whole-school approach for impact. #UKEdChat
A3. Students develop 'Independent Learning' by being given the opportunity to inquire and ask WHY about information and also to critically evaluate knowledge. In this way they become independent critical thinkers #ukedchat
Indeed. From recollection, attention needs to be given to social interactions, but giving responsibility and focus to pupils is great, and gives them a sense of purpose in their learning #UKEdChat
A4 Independent learning skills should be taught at point of need. Doing a few ad hoc lessons in the library or classroom doesn't really have much impact, every subject should be embracing this #UKEdChat
Tried this idea to recap with some disengaged boys in revision and they liked the competitive element! They paid attention to each other answers to ensure they didnāt cheat and beat them #TMSouthHistorians#ukedchat#historyteacher

But if the skills were taught before the exam years then you'd gain much more with students who could learn independently. They would be more focused and productive. #UKEdChat
A2. Yes absolutely, when we stop the 'mug v jug' approach in teaching and create a classroom environment that supports and values students individual contributions they develop confidence to become independent learners #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A6. Schools could encourage staff to follow professional interests that they would like to learn more about, and become experts in that subject, ready to share with colleagues within the local area.
Some interesting advice and resources around evidence-informed practice in this blog. Worth a read if you want to know how and where to get started...https://t.co/PtyIzmJauH#UKedchat
A7 The skills, knowledge and expertise of a professional librarian! We use independent learning tools all the time in our own work so teaching them to students is second nature! #UKEdChat
A5. It can help a great deal as the teacher uses the training and development to create new and exciting approaches to teaching and learning. Rather then feeling restricted by the school to teach only by the book #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A8. The problem here is group-thinking, where individuals are swayed to go with the flow of the group, rather than own specific interest. However, group-thinking can inform and spark independent thinking š
A8 - Of course - collaboration is a key to independent learning imo - discussion is independent, although can be scaffolded and talk for writing is imperative. #ukedchat think, pair, share - silent debate - thought splurges - all ind & collaborative as examples
Group thinking can also encourage debate, which leads to elaboration & further thinking as a group & then as individuals - we all need our thinking to be challenged #ukedchat A8
A3. We can encourage 'Independent Learning' in student by giving them opportunities to inquire and ask WHY about information and also to critically evaluate knowledge. In this way they become independent critical learners and thinkers #ukedchat
Board, pen & students #UkEdChat and well thought out questions to spark thinking - scaffolding for success - teacher knowledge is key here I think to ensuring ind learning is productive A7
